Sean Carroll's Mindscape Big Picture Scholarship
It is more important than ever to understand our universe from multiple vantage points. As a college student, I'm seeking a lifelong broad education. Understanding our universe and our connections to one another will help to solve pressing issues like healthcare and the environment. More understanding can foster a peaceful existence that will ensure the continuation of humankind. I find philosophy, history, political science, psychology, and sociology all rich disciplines. Yet, my focus at university is the microscopic world of chemistry.
I am fascinated by how the scientific world of atoms and invisible forces rules our larger macro environment. The Nobel Peace Prize was recently awarded to a scientist who revolutionized scientific thinking about mRNA. In studying this tiny molecule, she was able to impact the recent global pandemic. Her breakthrough research contributed to the COVID-19 vaccines that mitigated the spread of the disease.
In my basic science research, I am fascinated by the biochemistry of cancer. It is amazing how a system of metabolic pathways and cell signaling dysfunctions at a microscale can give rise to a life-altering diagnosis of cancer. I want to devote my career to studying the microscopic world of cells and cell regulation to bring new insights into cancer treatment as a physician-scientist.
I am also interested in macroscopic human interactions that contribute to positive social change and help people who were previously tied down by unfavorable histories or circumstances to achieve their best lives. From this vantage point, I am also involved in activities that seek to understand the social dimensions of health beyond the basic sciences. From my work as a leader of a student group on social justice in medicine and in student government as a chief of policy, I understand that economics, environment, and other social factors affect people's abilities to deal with illness or follow medical treatment.
For this reason, involvement in leadership positions where I can make recommendations and voice aggregated concerns of individuals confronting similar social challenges will be an important part of my medical career in addition to using my medical knowledge and science training to treat patients. This scholarship would allow me the opportunity to continue my scientific learning and social advocacy. Pursuing higher education with limited access to monetary means has been a challenge. However, as I advocate for myself and problem-solve through this obstacle, I often think of my future patients. My arduous journey will be an asset and increase my empathy for my future- patients seeking medical care.
