Hey there! I'm a rising sophomore at Texas State University, pursuing a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Health Sciences with a minor in Pre-Medical studies. As a proud Kenyan and first-generation college student, I'm thrilled to introduce myself with a passion for representing and empowering Black and African women in medicine.
My ultimate goal is to attend medical school and become a physician, with a specific interest in Family Medicine or Pediatrics. This aspiration is driven by my desire to reform the healthcare system and serve as a pillar of representation for youth who identify similarly as I do.
To expand my knowledge and skills in medicine, I've completed several courses that have earned me certifications as a Phlebotomy & EKG Technician, CCMA, as well as BLS CPR & OSHA training. My drive, organization, attention to detail, and exceptional time management skills have been instrumental in my journey thus far, and I'm confident that they'll continue to shape me into an invaluable asset in the field that I'm passionate about.

Maxwell Tuan Nguyen Memorial Scholarship
As a first-generation college student from Kenya, my journey has been marked by perseverance, resilience, and a deep-rooted commitment to education. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the disparities in educational accessibility that many children in my homeland face. This exposure fueled my determination to pursue higher education as a means to break barriers and advocate for equitable educational opportunities. My upbringing instilled in me a profound appreciation for the transformative power of education, motivating me to not only excel academically but also to use my knowledge and skills to empower underserved communities.
Choosing to pursue a degree in science was a natural progression of my interests and experiences. From a young age, I was fascinated by the intricacies of the natural world and the human body. My passion for science was further ignited during high school when I had the opportunity to intern at a local hospital. This experience solidified my desire to pursue a career in the healthcare field, as I saw the direct impact that compassionate and knowledgeable healthcare professionals can have on individuals and communities.
My ultimate goal is to become a Physician, with a particular interest in Family Medicine or Pediatrics. These specialties resonate with me because they allow for long-term patient relationships and comprehensive care that addresses both physical and emotional well-being. I believe in the importance of preventive medicine and patient education as tools to empower individuals and communities to lead healthier lives proactively.
As a Black woman pursuing a career in the science category of the STEM field, I am acutely aware of the gender and racial disparities that exist within these domains. This underrepresentation limits the scope of perspectives and innovative potential that could otherwise propel these industries forward. Pursuing a STEM career amidst this heavily male-dominated landscape is a courageous choice, distinguished by a steep learning curve and significant financial pressures. This scholarship will alleviate some of these financial burdens, allowing me to focus on my studies and volunteer work, furthering my goal of making a positive impact on my community and beyond.
Post-graduation, I envision myself not only practicing medicine but also engaging in community outreach and health education initiatives. I aim to establish programs that provide healthcare access and education to underserved populations, particularly in immigrant communities. Additionally, I am committed to mentoring and supporting aspiring healthcare professionals, encouraging diversity in the healthcare workforce, and fostering a collaborative environment where everyone's unique contributions are valued.
My journey towards a degree in science is driven by a deep-seated desire to serve others, promote health equity, and make a positive impact in the world. This scholarship represents more than just financial support; it symbolizes a commitment to empowering individuals like me who are dedicated to using their education and skills to effect meaningful change. With this scholarship, I will be one step closer to realizing my goal of becoming a compassionate and skilled Physician who advocates for the well-being of all patients, regardless of background or circumstance.

Women in STEM Scholarship
The STEM field is a crucial arena where various individuals navigate the world in a sense, or at least multiple domains, yet there remains a stark underrepresentation of women. As a Black woman pursuing a career in the science category of the STEM field, this gender disparity limits the scope of perspectives and innovative potential that could otherwise propel and grow these industries forward. Pursuing STEM careers amidst this heavily male-dominated landscape is a courageous choice, distinguished by a steep learning curve and significant financial pressures.
This scholarship aims to alleviate some of these financial burdens for women pursuing STEM disciplines in higher education. It recognizes the importance of supporting female undergraduate students who are determined to excel in fields traditionally dominated by men. By reducing financial barriers, this scholarship seeks to empower women to pursue their academic and professional aspirations without undue financial strain.
Growing up in an African, Christian household laid a foundation where a deep-seated relationship with God was nurtured from an early age. I was immersed in a culture where faith was not merely a practice but a fundamental aspect of life, woven into everyday experiences and community gatherings. Church was a nonnegotiable every Sunday and Wednesday, as well as nightly Bible studies. This upbringing instilled in me a reverence for spirituality and a profound belief in God's omnipresence and guidance. It's expected that "forcing" a religion onto children can turn to have a bad image of religion on the individual, however, as for my experience, it only pushed me further to discover the God my parents trusted to fuel our faith and build a personal relationship for myself.
While my upbringing provided a solid spiritual foundation, my personal faith journey evolved as I earnestly sought to deepen my relationship with Jesus. Through life's trials and challenges, I discovered solace, strength, and clarity through prayer and scripture. These moments of seeking God's wisdom and experiencing His peace affirmed the reality of His existence and His active involvement in my life. There was a pivotal moment during a period of uncertainty when I turned to prayer with heartfelt sincerity, seeking clarity and direction. In response, I was surrounded in a profound sense of peace that transcended any understanding, accompanied by a clear path forward that could only have been orchestrated by God Himself.
Now, to not be confused, my spiritual journey hasn't always been rainbows and unicorns. When I felt despair and insecure in pursuing a STEM career due to not only the lack of representation of women but also minority women, I felt as if handling my fears and anxieties was the way to go. Additionally, I felt as if college steered my relationship with God due to all the distractions. It was hard to be an outcast and choose to live the life God has as His will for my life but I knew deep inside that was my intended purpose. Through a lot of lessons, mistakes, and coming to an understanding, I shifted my life to walk in the purpose He designed for me.
These experiences have shaped my understanding that faith is not merely a cultural heritage but a personal journey of exploration and discovery. It is through my relationship with Jesus that I have found purpose, hope, and assurance, affirming my belief in the divine design evident in all aspects of creation. This scholarship opportunity represents more than just financial support; it symbolizes a commitment to empowering women in STEM who, like me, are driven by faith and a desire to contribute meaningfully to their fields and communities.

EBG Nursing Scholarship
Growing up as a first-generation child to Kenyan immigrants in Arlington, Texas has profoundly shaped my academic journey and aspirations, imbuing me with a deep sense of responsibility and commitment to excellence. My parents' decision to move to the United States in the early 2000s was driven by their dreams for a better life and the abundant opportunities they believed America could offer. Armed with green cards and carrying my seven-year-old sister on their backs as she slept, unaware of the significant change ahead, they embarked on a journey fueled by unwavering faith and determination.
I joined my family in Arlington in 2005, after they had already established their roots here. The path to gaining citizenship was arduous, marked by financial struggles and the challenges of adapting to a new culture and environment. Despite these hardships, education remained a priority in our household from the outset. My parents instilled in me a deep appreciation for learning, viewing it as the key to unlocking doors of opportunity in our new homeland.
This early emphasis on academics became a driving force in my life, propelling me to take on numerous leadership positions, maintain a high GPA throughout my schooling, and even deliver a commencement speech at my graduation ceremony. "What could go wrong?" It's a question that has echoed through my life, shaping my journey from a small town in Kenya to pursuing a career in medicine in a foreign land. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the disparities in educational opportunities faced by children in my homeland. I saw and heard of friends and family who couldn't say "The sky is the limit" because their limits were much more harsh. Despite the challenges of navigating a system where resources were scarce and financial constraints were a constant reality, I was determined to pursue higher education. Little did I know that this determination would prepare me for the unpredictability that lay ahead.
One of the most daunting challenges I faced was the uncertainty of financial stability. Balancing the costs of tuition, living expenses, and healthcare education has been a constant tightrope walk. What if I couldn't afford to continue my studies? What if the financial burden became too much to bear? These questions weighed heavily on my mind, threatening to derail my dreams. However, each obstacle became an opportunity to cultivate resilience and resourcefulness. I sought scholarships, worked multiple jobs, and leaned on the support of mentors and family to navigate the financial hurdles.
Another significant concern was the cultural and societal barriers that accompanied pursuing a career in medicine, particularly as a Black woman in a heavily male-dominated STEM field. Would I face discrimination or prejudice? Would my voice be heard and respected in clinical settings? These uncertainties fueled my determination to advocate for diversity and inclusion within healthcare. I sought out opportunities to amplify underrepresented voices and championed initiatives that promote equity in healthcare access and treatment.
Navigating the complexities of a foreign healthcare system presented its own set of challenges. Would I adapt to the cultural nuances of patient care? Would I be able to communicate effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds? These questions pushed me to embrace cultural competence and empathy as foundational pillars of my practice. I immersed myself in community outreach programs, volunteered in clinics serving immigrant populations, and honed my language skills to better connect with patients.
Despite the uncertainties and challenges, every setback became a stepping stone toward personal and professional growth. Each obstacle reinforced my commitment to advocating for health equity, empowering underserved communities, and fostering a healthcare environment where every patient receives compassionate, holistic care. The question "What could go wrong?" became a catalyst for resilience, determination, and a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of education and compassion.
Looking ahead, my journey toward becoming a physician specializing in Family Medicine or Pediatrics is driven by a profound sense of purpose and a commitment to effecting positive change in the world. I envision a future where healthcare access is equitable, preventive medicine is prioritized, and patients are empowered to lead healthier lives. With each challenge overcome, I am reminded of the resilience and determination that define my journey. I am grateful for the lessons learned along the way and eager to use my experiences to make a meaningful impact in the lives of patients and communities, both locally and globally.
Nikhil Desai Reinventing Healthcare Scholarship
If given the opportunity to transform our current healthcare system, one change that I am deeply passionate about advocating for is the implementation of universal healthcare coverage. Growing up in Kenya as a first-generation college student, I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact of inadequate healthcare access on individuals and communities. In many instances, essential medical services were either inaccessible or financially prohibitive, leaving many without the care they desperately needed. These experiences have shaped my belief that healthcare should be a fundamental human right, not contingent upon one's socioeconomic status or ability to pay.
Universal healthcare embodies the principle of equity, ensuring that every individual, regardless of background or circumstances, has access to comprehensive medical care. It removes the financial barriers that often deter people from seeking medical attention, thereby promoting early diagnosis and treatment of health conditions. By prioritizing preventive care, such as regular check-ups, screenings, and vaccinations, universal healthcare can significantly reduce the incidence of preventable diseases and complications. This proactive approach not only improves individual health outcomes but also alleviates the burden on healthcare systems by addressing health issues before they escalate into more serious and costly conditions.
Moreover, universal healthcare fosters a sense of security and well-being within communities. It provides peace of mind to individuals and families, knowing that they can receive necessary medical care without fear of financial devastation. This sense of security promotes overall societal resilience and productivity, as healthier individuals contribute more effectively to their families, workplaces, and communities. This would also assist lower-privileged communities.
On a personal level, advocating for universal healthcare aligns with my core values of empathy, justice, and compassion. It reflects my commitment to using my education and skills to effect positive change in society, particularly for underserved and vulnerable populations. As a future physician, I aspire to work within a healthcare system that prioritizes patient-centered care, social equity, and holistic well-being. I envision a healthcare landscape where every patient feels valued, respected, and empowered to make informed decisions about their health.
Implementing universal healthcare coverage would represent a transformative step towards building a more equitable and compassionate healthcare system. It would address longstanding disparities in healthcare access, promote health equity, and uphold healthcare as a basic human right. By advocating for universal healthcare, I am dedicated to contributing to a healthier, more just society where everyone has the opportunity to live a life of dignity and well-being.

Selflessness is a virtue that transcends personal interests, rooted in experiences and upbringing that shape one's perspective on accessibility and gratitude. As a first-generation college student from Kenya, I have experienced firsthand the disparities in access to resources and opportunities. Growing up in an environment where my peers' basic necessities were not always accessible or met has instilled in me a deep sense of gratitude and a commitment to giving back to others. This upbringing has fueled my determination to embody selflessness through meaningful actions that contribute to the well-being of individuals and communities.
One of the ways I demonstrate selflessness is through actively participating in a food drive organized by my church. During the holiday season, I dedicated my time to collecting, sorting, and distributing essential food items to families in need within our community. Witnessing the gratitude and relief on the faces of those who received our donations reaffirmed the impact of collective efforts in alleviating food insecurity and fostering a sense of solidarity among community members.
Additionally, I have consistently volunteered to assist elderly members of my church community. Recognizing the challenges they face, particularly with mobility and everyday tasks, I regularly help them when needed to provide companionship, lift things into their cars, and offer practical assistance in any area. These interactions have enriched my understanding of the importance of intergenerational connections and the value of mutual support within a community.
Another significant example of my commitment to selflessness is my involvement in organizing clothing donations for families who are less fortunate. By decluttering my wardrobe and donating gently used clothes to local shelters and community organizations, I contribute to meeting the basic needs of individuals experiencing economic hardship. These donations not only provide essential clothing but also empower recipients to maintain dignity and confidence as they navigate challenging circumstances.
Furthermore, I actively participate in outreach programs that support marginalized and vulnerable populations, advocating for social justice and equity. By engaging in initiatives aimed at addressing systemic barriers and promoting inclusive policies, I strive to amplify the voices of underrepresented communities and create opportunities for meaningful societal change.
Embodying selflessness is a reflection of my core values and beliefs in empathy, compassion, and service to others. Through participating in food drives, assisting elderly church members, organizing clothing donations, and advocating for social justice, I endeavor to make a positive impact in the lives of those around me and contribute to building a more compassionate and equitable society. These experiences have reinforced my commitment to selflessness and shaped my understanding of the transformative power of collective action in fostering community resilience and empowerment.

Breast health education is not merely a topic of academic interest for me; it is deeply personal and profoundly impactful. My journey towards understanding the critical importance of breast health education began with a pivotal moment in my life when my beloved aunt was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. This diagnosis shook our family to its core and thrust us into a world of uncertainty, fear, and resilience.
As I stood by my aunt's side throughout her treatments and medical consultations, I witnessed firsthand the physical and emotional toll that breast cancer exacts on individuals and their loved ones. Her courage in facing each day with unwavering strength left an indelible mark on my heart and ignited a passionate commitment within me to advocate for breast health awareness and education.
The experience with my aunt underscored the vital role of early detection in breast cancer outcomes. Despite her diagnosis at an advanced stage, I learned that early detection through regular screenings can significantly improve prognosis and treatment options. This knowledge fueled my determination to ensure that other women are equipped with the information and resources necessary to detect breast cancer early and seek timely medical intervention.
Breast health education is not only about disseminating information on mammograms and self-examinations; it encompasses a holistic approach to empower women with comprehensive knowledge about risk factors, lifestyle choices, and preventative measures. By promoting awareness, encouraging regular screenings, and emphasizing the importance of early intervention, we can potentially save lives and reduce the impact of breast cancer within communities.
My aunt's journey taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, empathy, and the transformative power of knowledge. It inspired me to advocate for accessible and culturally sensitive breast health education initiatives that reach underserved populations, ensuring that every woman, regardless of background or circumstance, has the tools and understanding to prioritize her health proactively. Because of her impact, I've made sure to make sure to pass on my knowledge.
Moreover, in the wake of my aunt's battle, I have taken proactive measures to educate and encourage my older family members, especially women, to prioritize their breast health. It's not something we regularly have on our minds, however, the risk is too high for any ignorance. Although I'm younger, I have engaged in conversations with them about the importance of regular mammograms, and self-examinations, and seeking medical advice promptly if they notice any changes or abnormalities. By sharing my aunt's story and emphasizing the impact of early detection on treatment outcomes, I aim to empower and motivate my family members to take charge of their health and well-being.
Breast health education is a cause that resonates deeply with me, rooted in personal experience and a commitment to making a difference. By raising awareness, fostering empowerment, and supporting ongoing research, I am dedicated to contributing to a future where breast cancer is detected early, treated effectively, and ultimately prevented. Through education and advocacy, I aim to honor my aunt's legacy by ensuring that her journey inspires positive change in the lives of countless women facing breast health challenges.

In the journey of faith and spirituality, the concept of "my truth" often arises in contemporary discourse, suggesting a subjective understanding of reality shaped by personal experiences, beliefs, and perspectives. This notion contrasts with the biblical concept of truth, which is anchored in the character and Word of God. According to Scripture, particularly in John 14:6, Jesus declares, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Here, truth is not subjective or relative but is embodied in the person of Jesus Christ, who represents absolute truth and the ultimate standard of righteousness.
From a biblical standpoint, God's truth, as revealed in the Bible, transcends human understanding and cultural contexts. Psalm 119:160 affirms, "The entirety of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever." This verse underscores the divine origin and enduring nature of God's truth, which serves as a moral and spiritual compass for believers. It provides clarity amidst the complexities of life and guides individuals in discerning right from wrong, regardless of societal norms or personal inclinations.
In the context of my personal journey, rooted in an African Christian upbringing, the integration of faith and truth has been foundational. Despite challenges and uncertainties, my faith has been a source of strength and guidance, offering a framework through which to navigate life's complexities. Through prayer, reflection, and study of Scripture, I have experienced moments of profound peace and clarity, affirming the relevance of God's truth in shaping my beliefs and actions.
Moreover, my faith has played a pivotal role in navigating the male-dominated landscape of STEM fields, where challenges such as underrepresentation and financial pressures abound. The pursuit of a STEM career as a Black woman has been marked by moments of insecurity and doubt, but through prayer and reliance on God's promises, I have found resilience and purpose. My spiritual journey has taught me that true empowerment comes from aligning my aspirations with God's will, trusting in His provision, and embracing opportunities to contribute meaningfully to my community.
While the concept of "my truth" may reflect personal perspectives and experiences, the biblical truth stands as an unchanging standard that transcends cultural shifts and individual interpretations. By grounding myself in God's truth, I am equipped to navigate challenges, pursue academic and professional goals in STEM, and empower other women to do the same. This scholarship opportunity represents not only financial support but also a testament to the intersection of faith and academic pursuits, encouraging women in STEM to embrace their calling and contribute to society in meaningful ways.
Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
Growing up in a Kenyan-American household, mental health was a subject often shrouded in taboo. Conversations about emotional struggles or psychological well-being were rare, if not entirely absent. In my culture, there was a prevailing belief that mental health issues were either a sign of personal weakness or simply nonexistent. This stigma surrounding mental health significantly influenced my early beliefs and made it challenging to recognize or address my own mental health needs.
My journey towards understanding mental health began during the quarantine period of the COVID-19 pandemic. The isolation and disruption of daily life triggered a deep depression, which was compounded by the lack of social interaction and the overwhelming uncertainty of the times. For the first time, I was confronted with my mental health in a way that I could not ignore. It was a period marked by intense introspection, emotional lows, and a desperate search for ways to cope.
During these difficult times, I turned to distractions as a cure for managing my depression. It was all new to me and a season of pure unknown. However, after connecting with my youth pastor, he pointed me to resources such as therapy, prayer, and self-care practices which started to progress my journey with mental health. This journey was eye-opening and transformative. It made me realize that mental health is an integral part of overall well-being and that it requires the same attention and care as physical health. Understanding this helped me to challenge the stigmas I grew up with and embrace the importance of mental health awareness and support.
My experience with mental health has profoundly influenced my beliefs. I now advocate for open discussions about mental health, recognizing that it is a crucial aspect of human experience that should not be ignored or stigmatized. I believe that acknowledging and addressing mental health issues is essential for personal growth and well-being. This shift in perspective has also enhanced my empathy and understanding towards others who might be struggling with their mental health. I have become more compassionate and supportive, recognizing the importance of providing a safe space for people to share their experiences and seek help.
These experiences have also significantly impacted my relationships. I have learned the value of vulnerability and the importance of honest communication about emotional well-being. This has strengthened my connections with family and friends, as we navigate our mental health journeys together. By sharing my struggles and listening to theirs, we have built stronger, more supportive relationships. I have also become an advocate within my community, encouraging open dialogue about mental health and working to dismantle the stigmas that prevent people from seeking help.
In terms of career aspirations, my mental health journey has solidified my commitment to pursuing a career in medicine, with a focus on integrating mental health into holistic patient care. I am particularly interested in becoming a physician who not only addresses physical ailments but also considers the mental and emotional well-being of my patients. My personal experiences have given me a unique perspective and a deep empathy for those dealing with mental health issues, and I want to use this understanding to provide compassionate and comprehensive care.
Furthermore, my experience with mental health has fueled my passion for public health advocacy. I am determined to work towards creating more accessible and inclusive mental health services, particularly for underrepresented and underserved communities. I aspire to contribute to initiatives that promote mental health awareness, reduce stigma, and ensure that everyone has access to the support and resources they need.
My experience with mental health has been a transformative journey that has reshaped my beliefs, strengthened my relationships, and defined my career aspirations. Growing up in an environment where mental health was taboo made it difficult to address my own struggles, but my journey through depression and self-discovery has taught me the importance of mental health awareness and support. I am committed to advocating for mental health, both in my personal life and in my future career as a physician. By integrating mental health into holistic patient care and promoting public health initiatives, I hope to make a positive impact and ensure that mental health is recognized and addressed as a vital component of overall well-being.

Rory J. and Kathryn A. Blanchard Allied Health Scholarship
Technology plays an increasingly critical role in transforming the delivery of healthcare services and improving patient outcomes. As a first-generation college student from Kenya pursuing a career in the healthcare field, I have witnessed firsthand how technological advancements can revolutionize patient care. My personal experience with my uncle, who relied on Siri to communicate with us and his doctors during his final days, opened my eyes to the profound impact technology can have on healthcare. This experience was both heartbreaking and enlightening, showing me the immense potential of technology to enhance communication, improve efficiency, and ultimately lead to better patient outcomes.
My upbringing instilled in me a deep appreciation for the transformative power of education, motivating me to not only excel academically but also to use my knowledge and skills to empower underserved communities. This perspective drives my commitment to making a positive impact through my studies and future career endeavors, ensuring that education becomes a vehicle for change and empowerment for generations to come.
Allied health professionals and first responders are uniquely positioned to leverage advancements in technology to enhance their practice and provide more efficient and effective care. For example, the use of electronic health records (EHRs) has streamlined the documentation process, allowing healthcare providers to access patient information quickly and make informed decisions. EHRs facilitate better coordination of care among different healthcare providers, reducing the likelihood of errors and improving patient outcomes.
Telemedicine is another technological innovation that has significantly impacted the healthcare field. By enabling healthcare providers to conduct virtual consultations, telemedicine has made healthcare more accessible, especially for individuals in remote or underserved areas. Technology as such allows patients to receive timely medical advice and treatment without the need for travel, thereby improving patient satisfaction and reducing healthcare costs. Telemedicine has been particularly valuable during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring continuity of care while minimizing the risk of infection.
Wearable health devices, such as fitness trackers and smartwatches, are also transforming healthcare delivery. These devices monitor vital signs, physical activity, and other health metrics in real-time, providing valuable data that can be used to track patient progress and detect potential health issues early. Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) have revolutionized diabetes management by providing real-time glucose readings, allowing patients and healthcare providers to make timely adjustments to treatment plans.
In my own experience, witnessing my uncle use Siri to communicate with us and his doctors underscored the power of technology to enhance patient care. Despite his limited ability to speak, my uncle could convey his needs and receive timely responses from his healthcare providers, improving his quality of life during his final days. This experience demonstrated how assistive technologies can empower patients and facilitate better communication between patients and healthcare providers. Seeing him smile as he managed to convey his thoughts and needs with just his voice assistant was a profound moment for me. It was as if technology gave him back a part of his dignity in those precious last days.
Technology has the potential to transform the delivery of healthcare services and improve patient outcomes significantly. From electronic health records and telemedicine to wearable health devices and artificial intelligence, innovative technological solutions are shaping the future of healthcare. My personal experience with my uncle's use of Siri highlighted the profound impact of technology on patient care, inspiring me to explore the potential of technology in my future career as a healthcare professional. The memory of his last days, where technology bridged the gap between his needs and our support, stays with me as a powerful reminder of why I am pursuing this path.

Texas Women Empowerment Scholarship
The STEM field is a crucial arena where various individuals navigate the world in a sense, or at least multiple domains, yet there remains a stark underrepresentation of women. As a Black woman pursuing a career in the science category of the STEM field at Texas State University, this gender disparity limits the scope of perspectives and innovative potential that could otherwise propel and grow these industries forward. Pursuing STEM careers amidst this heavily male-dominated landscape is a courageous choice, distinguished by a steep learning curve and significant financial pressures.

When you face setbacks, remember that perseverance is your greatest ally. Each challenge you overcome strengthens your resolve and brings you one step closer to your dreams.
One of the ways I have overcome adversity is through my commitment to volunteering and serving my community. I have been involved in several non-profit organizations that focus on providing resources and support to underprivileged individuals and families. Through these experiences, I have gained a greater understanding of the challenges that many people face on a daily basis, and I have been inspired to make a difference in their lives. Build a network of mentors who believe in your potential and are committed to helping you succeed. Remember, you don’t have to navigate this journey alone.

I joined my family in Arlington, Texas, in 2005, after they had already settled here. Gaining citizenship was a challenge, but they persevered and succeeded. Throughout their struggles to pay bills and establish a new life, I was learning to read and write, and education became a priority in our household.
This early emphasis on academics has been a driving force in my life, leading me to hold numerous leadership positions, maintain a high GPA, and even speak at my graduation ceremony. The support of loved ones, including my parents, siblings, and extended family, has eased our journey and contributed to the success we have achieved in America.
Our family's decision to take that leap of faith and move to the unknown has had a profound ripple effect. One of the most challenging obstacles I faced was during my freshman year of college when I was enrolled in a rigorous chemistry course. The subject matter was incredibly complex, and despite my best efforts, I struggled to keep up with the demanding coursework. My initial grades were disappointing, and I felt overwhelmed by the prospect of failing. Instead of giving up, I decided to take proactive steps to overcome this obstacle. I sought out additional resources, such as online tutorials and study guides, and spent countless hours in the library reviewing the material. I also formed a study group with classmates, which provided mutual support and encouragement. I attended every office hour session my professor offered, asking questions and seeking clarification on difficult concepts. Through perseverance, hard work, and a willingness to seek help, I gradually improved my understanding of the subject. By the end of the semester, my grades had significantly improved, and I passed the course with a strong grade. This experience taught me the importance of resilience, determination, and the value of seeking support when faced with challenging obstacles.
Leadership is another aspect of my life that has been profoundly influenced by my experiences.
I have held multiple executive board positions in various organizations, further honing my leadership abilities. Through these roles, I have learned that effective leaders do not lead in front of their team but alongside them. True leadership involves collaboration, empathy, and a willingness to listen and adapt. These experiences have taught me the value of teamwork, and the importance of fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, and allowed me to develop strong organizational and communication skills. They reinforce my commitment to serving others and making a positive impact in my community. It was a powerful reminder that leadership is about inspiring and empowering others to work towards a common goal.
The journey to medical school is fraught with challenges, but each obstacle is an opportunity to grow and learn. By embracing my cultural heritage, seeking support, and demonstrating resilience and determination, I have overcome adversity and developed into a stronger, more compassionate individual. My leadership experiences have further solidified my commitment to making a positive impact on my community and beyond. My favorite concert memory is one that will forever hold a special place in my heart because it also happens to be my very first concert experience. The anticipation, the excitement, and the energy of the crowd all culminated in an unforgettable night when I saw my favorite rapper, Gunna, perform live.
It was one of the first weekends of summer coming from college studying medicine all semester. The air buzzed with excitement and anticipation as the DJ played the hottest opening song and as fans eagerly waited for the show to start. The venue was packed with people who shared the same appreciation for Gunna's music, creating an unexplainable atmosphere of camaraderie and tension. As the lights dimmed and the first beats of Gunna's new song "Bittersweet" echoed through the speakers, the crowd erupted in cheers, and I felt an overwhelming surge of euphoria. As he made his way to the stage, he passed through the pit. When Gunna reached out and touched us, my phone was one of the things he touched! It was a brief but paranormal connection, and I couldn't believe that the person who had created the soundtrack to so many of my memories was right there in front of me, literally face to face.
Hearing my favorite songs live, in the presence of the artist who made them, was an experience that words can hardly capture. Every song was recited with passion, and with remembrance of how and when I discovered each song as I rapped every lyric with my friends next to me. The bass thumped through my chest, and the lyrics I knew by heart resonated in the air around me. This concert was not only a celebration of Gunna's music but also a much-needed break from the academic stress of a crazy first year of college I had faced throughout the school year. That night, however, all of my worries and stress melted away as I immersed myself in the music and the vibrant energy of the crowd.
Gunna's performance was a reminder of the importance of taking time to enjoy the things that bring joy and inspiration into our lives. It was a night of pure euphoria, and I left the concert with a renewed sense of the importance of rest and self-care and a heart full of unforgettable memories. My first concert experience, seeing my favorite rapper Gunna, was more than just a night of incredible music—it was a moment of connection, relief, and joy that I will cherish forever.

If I could offer one more piece of advice to my younger self, it would be to embrace vulnerability and seek support when needed. There is strength in admitting when you need help and in allowing others to support you through difficult times. Don’t be afraid to lean on your family, friends, and mentors. They are your pillars, and their support will help you rise above the challenges. By fostering these relationships, you’ll not only build a strong support network but also learn the value of community and collaboration, which are essential in both personal and professional growth.
Strong Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship
Growing up as a Kenyan-American, my journey has been deeply influenced by my passion for community and my unwavering faith, guiding lights through various phases of my life. However, one of the most significant challenges I've faced is the stark absence of representation in fields that should have propelled me toward my desired career path. Instead of fostering my aspirations, this void often left me feeling disheartened. Yet, this challenge has ignited a vigorous determination within me to advocate for change.
Leadership, to me, means not only driving others forward but walking alongside them, empowering each individual to realize their full potential and contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate world. Through my experiences and values, I am equipped to lead by example, inspire others, and advocate for equity and representation in all facets of life.
Realizing that leadership involves driving peers forward while walking alongside the team instead of leading from the front has been a transformative insight in my journey. This approach to leadership emphasizes collaboration, empathy, and empowerment. By fostering a supportive environment where everyone's voices are heard and contributions are valued, I strive to inspire and motivate my peers to achieve collective goals. I believe that true leadership involves not only setting direction and making decisions but also actively listening, understanding individual strengths and challenges, and guiding others with empathy and respect. This philosophy allows me to build strong relationships, cultivate a sense of unity, and achieve meaningful outcomes together as a cohesive team.
From an early age, my faith has been a cornerstone of my identity. Engaged in my church’s creative ministry, I discovered immense joy in serving others and spreading positivity. Despite being the youngest member, I was honored to lead the ministry, an experience that instilled in me the values of community and service—a foundation I carry with me in every endeavor.
My volunteer journey has been diverse and impactful, organizing and participating in numerous community service initiatives that have enriched the lives of those in need and contributed to the well-being of my community. These experiences have taught me the profound importance of empathy, compassion, and the transformative power of small acts of kindness. Leading several of these projects has further honed my communication, organizational, and teamwork skills, solidifying my commitment to effecting positive change.
My passion for medicine ignited early due to my proficiency in science. During my high school internship at a local hospital, I found fulfillment in creating positive experiences for every patient I encountered, cherishing the relationships forged. Despite moments of feeling isolated and uncertain about my future due to the lack of representation in the medical field, my resolve to become a Physician remains unwavering. My long-term aspiration is to innovate within medicine and mentor future healthcare professionals, driven by a vision of evolving the field for the betterment of patient care and inclusivity.
As a first-generation college student, the financial strain of higher education dominates large. This scholarship opportunity would alleviate a significant burden, enabling me to focus on academic pursuits and community service endeavors. It represents more than financial relief; it signifies an investment in my potential to make a meaningful impact locally and globally. Despite the challenges posed by underrepresentation, I am driven to serve as a role model for younger Black and African women, demonstrating that with determination and perseverance, dreams can be realized and substantial change can be achieved.
JJ Savaunt's Women In STEM Scholarship

Margaret A. Briller Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Margaret A. Briller was a beloved mother who led an incredible, impactful life and is missed by all who knew her. She spent her life working as a nurse and making her mark on the patients she encountered. Quality nurses like Margaret are essential to the success of the healthcare industry, but there is a growing shortage that is only being exacerbated by the growing financial burden of nursing school.
This scholarship seeks to honor the life of Margaret A. Briller by supporting women who are following in her footsteps and pursuing the nursing field. As an African female, pursuing a degree in the field of medicine, I feel a profound connection to Margaret’s legacy and am committed to continuing her impactful work.
From a young age, I have been drawn to the healthcare field, inspired by the nurses who care for their patients with compassion and dedication. Growing up as a first-generation immigrant from Kenya, I have seen firsthand the disparities that exist in healthcare, both in my home country and in the United States. These experiences have fueled my desire to pursue a career in nursing, where I can make a tangible difference in the lives of others.
My characteristics and goals closely align with those of Margaret. Like her, I am driven by a deep sense of empathy and a commitment to improving the well-being of others. My goal is to become a nurse who not only provides exceptional medical care but also serves as a pillar of support and representation for Black and African women in the healthcare field. I want to make patients' days better daily, just as Margaret did.
However, the financial burden of nursing school is a significant hurdle. This scholarship would be instrumental in helping me overcome these financial barriers and achieve my goal of becoming a nurse. With the support of this scholarship, I would be able to focus more on my studies and clinical training, rather than worrying about how to pay for tuition and other expenses. It would also serve as a source of motivation, reminding me that hard work and dedication can lead to success and fulfillment.
Throughout my academic journey, I have faced several adversities, but I have persevered through resilience and determination. As a first-generation college student, I have had to navigate the complexities of higher education on my own, often feeling isolated and overwhelmed. Additionally, being a minority in a predominantly white field, as well as attending a predominantly white institution, has presented its own set of challenges. However, these experiences have only strengthened my resolve to succeed and make a difference in the healthcare industry.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I have been actively involved in volunteering and serving my community. I have worked with several non-profit organizations that focus on providing resources and support to underprivileged individuals and families. As well as working with non-profits that align with bettering my community and serve my career field, I have also been able to experience these in line with my education by joining organizations that build a bridge towards my career and my growth. Through these experiences, I have gained a greater understanding of the challenges that many people face daily, and I have been inspired to make a difference in their lives.
For example, I have volunteered at a local food bank, where I assisted in sorting and distributing food to families in need. I have also been involved with a non-profit that provides mentorship and tutoring to at-risk youth. Through this program, I have had the opportunity to serve as a positive role model and help students achieve their academic and personal goals.
Receiving this scholarship would not only help me overcome financial hurdles but also allow me to continue serving my community and making a positive impact in the world. With a nursing degree, I plan to work in underserved communities, providing quality healthcare to those who need it most. I also hope to advocate for greater representation and equity in the healthcare field, ensuring that all patients receive the care and respect they deserve.

I Can and I Will Scholarship
My experience with mental health during the quarantine period of the recent pandemic has had a profound impact on my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. The isolation I faced during that time was unlike anything I had ever experienced before. While the pandemic affected many, being alone in the same four walls for 1 1/2 straight was particularly challenging for me.
During the quarantine, my parents were still required to work, and my sister lived on her own, leaving me with no one but myself for company. This period of intense isolation forced me to confront aspects of myself that I wasn't fully prepared to face alone. With no opportunity for social interactions outside of media, I not only navigated my own mental health struggles but also empathized with my peers who were going through similar experiences.
Through this ordeal, I learned a great deal about resilience and self-discovery. It made me realize the importance of mental well-being and the need to break the stigma surrounding mental health discussions. My experience has strengthened my beliefs in the significance of supporting one another and creating an environment where open conversations about mental health are encouraged and embraced.
In terms of relationships, the pandemic taught me the value of genuine connections and the importance of staying connected with loved ones, even when physically distant. The experience deepened my appreciation for the emotional support and understanding that comes from strong relationships with family and friends. As I navigated my own mental health struggles, I also sought to be a source of support and empathy for those around me who were going through similar challenges.
Professionally, the pandemic has influenced my career aspirations significantly. My desire to pursue medicine is driven not only by my academic achievements and passion for learning but also by a genuine calling to serve others in their times of vulnerability and need. I believe that a career in medicine will empower me to positively impact the lives of my patients, offering them hope, healing, and a path to improved well-being.
My experience during the pandemic has taught me the importance of prioritizing mental well-being and has instilled in me a sense of responsibility to advocate for mental health awareness. It has shaped my beliefs, deepened my relationships, and fueled my passion to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others through a career dedicated to mental health support and advocacy.
Maxwell Tuan Nguyen Memorial Scholarship
The inspiration to pursue a career in the medical field is deeply rooted in my family's journey to the United States. As a first-generation child of Kenyan immigrants, I witnessed firsthand the challenges they faced to provide us with a better life and access to opportunities. Their unwavering faith and determination in a new land shaped my sense of responsibility to make a meaningful difference in this world.
As a child, I would often play "doctor" with my sister, using toy stethoscopes and bandages, unknowingly foreshadowing my future path in the medical field. Those innocent games were a glimpse of the passion that would later drive me to pursue a career in medicine.
Furthermore, my family's immigration journey taught me that healing goes beyond physical ailments; it involves nurturing hearts and minds, just like my parents did when they comforted us during challenging times. Their resilience and compassion have become an integral part of my approach to healthcare, reminding me that healing is a holistic process.
Growing up, I saw the impact that healthcare professionals had on our lives. I witnessed the dedication and compassion they showed while caring for my family and the community. These experiences ignited a spark within me to contribute to the field of medicine, and to be a guiding light for others as they were for us during our journey.
My friends often text me with the phrase "Dr. Stephy" followed by them asking why they are experiencing a certain symptom or illness. Their faith in my abilities strengthens my resolve to become a healthcare professional and be a reliable source of guidance for those seeking answers to their health concerns.
In addition, I knew my career goals were accurate when I was watching Grey's Anatomy and The Good Doctor opposed to Pretty Little Liars and Vampire Diaries. While my friends may have been captivated by drama and intrigue, I found myself drawn to medical shows, immersing myself in the world of healthcare and envisioning my future as a dedicated healer.
My dream is to become a healthcare professional, serving not only my community but also reaching out to underserved populations. I want to be a source of hope and healing, just as healthcare professionals were for my family when we needed it most. I envision myself bridging gaps in healthcare access and working tirelessly to provide quality care to those who may have limited resources.
In my career, I plan to be an advocate for health equity, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status, receives the care they deserve. Through volunteer work, community outreach, and educational initiatives, I aim to empower individuals to take charge of their health and make informed decisions.
Moreover, I want to inspire the next generation, particularly young African and Black women, to dream big and pursue their passions fearlessly. My family's journey fuels my drive to make a difference through my career in the medical field and to represent African and Black women who are aspiring to pursue medicine. By merging my personal experiences with my professional aspirations, I am committed to leaving a positive imprint on the lives of others and advocating for diversity and inclusion in the healthcare industry. Ella Hall-Dillon Scholarship
My family's journey to the United States has been a defining aspect of my life, profoundly shaping my academic journey. As a first-generation child of Kenyan immigrants, I hold a deep sense of responsibility to make a difference in this world, representing the aspirations and struggles of my subgroups.
In the early 2000s, my parents made the courageous decision to come to the U.S. with my seven-year-old sister, carrying only a handful of goals and limited plans. They saw this move as an opportunity and blessing, hoping to provide us with a better life and countless opportunities they believed America could offer. Armed with green cards and fueled by unwavering faith, my parents shouldered the weight of their dreams, carrying my sister on their backs as she slept, unaware that she would wake up in a place where her dreams could and would blossom.
I joined my family in 2005 after they had already settled here. Gaining citizenship was a challenge, but they persevered and succeeded. Amidst their struggles to pay bills and establish a new life, education became a priority in our household, propelling me to academic success and holding numerous leadership positions.
Our family's journey has had a profound ripple effect. Today, we proudly represent successful Africans in various fields, inspiring others worldwide and offering hope and encouragement to those facing similar challenges. In the same village where our family once struggled to decide whether to purchase a plane ticket, our experiences have become a realistic guide for those seeking a better life.
Now, it is up to us, the next generation, to continue this cycle of success and uplift those around us. Committed to building up the next generation of achievers, we ensure that the opportunities we received are passed on to others, creating a resilient legacy.

Growing up, I was fortunate to have been raised in a family that instilled in me the importance of giving back to the community. My parents taught me that it was not enough to just live in a community, but to actively contribute to it and make it a better place for everyone. I like to think of community service as a form of therapy, except instead of talking about my problems, I'm actively trying to solve them with a group of like-minded people. This is what initially brought me to community service.
As I got older, my passion for community service continued to grow. I found that there was no greater feeling than helping others, and that the impact I could have on someone else's life was immeasurable. I have always believed that we should strive to leave the world a better place than we found it, and community service is a powerful way to do that.
Over the years, I have volunteered with a number of non-profit organizations, both locally and abroad. One of the most rewarding experiences I have had was working with a group of volunteers to clean an area by a school in a rural village in Kenya. As a Kenyan myself, I always make sure to be a resource when I visit to see my family. Seeing the joy and gratitude on the faces of the villagers who now have access to education in a cleaner area was a moment I will never forget.
In addition to my volunteer work, I have also been involved in various social and charitable activities. For example, I have helped to organize fundraisers for local food banks and homeless shelters, as well as participating in community clean-up events. These experiences have taught me that there are always opportunities to make a difference, no matter how small.
Looking to the future, I plan to continue to contribute to my community in any way that I can. I am committed to seeking out new volunteer opportunities and giving back to those in need. I believe that community service is not just a way to help others, but also a way to grow and develop as a person. By working with others and learning about their experiences, we can broaden our own perspectives and become more empathetic and understanding individuals.
In terms of my specific plans, I hope to use my education and career to make a difference in my community. As someone who is passionate about healthcare, I plan to seek out opportunities to work with underserved populations and advocate for greater access to quality healthcare. I believe that everyone should have access to the care they need, regardless of their background or financial situation.
One of the ways I hope to contribute to this cause is by pursuing a career in medicine. I believe that becoming a physician will give me the knowledge and skills I need to make a real impact on people's lives. Additionally, I plan to continue volunteering with healthcare organizations and participating in medical mission trips to developing countries.
Community service has been a major part of my life and has taught me the importance of giving back to others. I am committed to continuing to volunteer and seek out new ways to contribute to my community, and I hope to use my education and career to make a positive impact on those around me. They say that happiness is contagious, so I figure if I spread kindness and positivity through community service, I might just start an epidemic of joy.
Margalie Jean-Baptiste Scholarship
WinnerAs I reflect on my life, I cannot help but recognize the challenges I have faced and the adversity I have overcome. Growing up as a first-generation immigrant in the United States, I faced numerous obstacles that threatened to derail my aspirations for a better life. Despite these challenges, I have persevered and remained steadfast in my pursuit of success.
One of the biggest obstacles I have faced is cultural differences. Being Kenyan, I struggled to fit in with my peers and navigate the intricacies of American society. Many times, I was the butt of the joke. I often felt isolated and misunderstood, but I refused to let these feelings hold me back. Instead, I embraced my heritage and used it as a source of strength and motivation.
Despite these challenges, I have been able to overcome adversity through my resilience and determination. I have learned to adapt to difficult situations and approach obstacles with a positive attitude. I have also sought out opportunities to learn and grow, both personally and academically.
In addition to my volunteer work, I have also worked hard to achieve academic success. Despite the financial and cultural barriers I faced, I maintained a high GPA throughout high school, held many leadership positions in my school, and worked hard to get into many colleges. I have also pursued internships and research opportunities that align with my career goals and allow me to make a positive impact in the world.
Overall, I believe that my experiences with adversity have made me a stronger and more compassionate individual. I have learned to persevere through difficult times and remain optimistic in the face of challenges. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to serve my community and make a difference in the lives of others.
This scholarship would be instrumental in helping me achieve my educational goals and continue to make a positive impact in the world. It would alleviate some of the financial burden that I have faced and allow me to focus more on my studies and extracurricular activities. It would also serve as a source of motivation and encouragement, reminding me that hard work and dedication can lead to success and fulfillment.
I am proud of the obstacles I have overcome and the person I have become. I am committed to using my experiences to make a positive impact in the world, and I am grateful for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship.

As I sit down to write this essay, I am reminded of how grateful I am to have the opportunity to pursue my educational goals. My journey to this point has been filled with challenges and obstacles, but I have always been driven by my passion for learning and my desire to make a positive impact on the world.
Growing up in a Kenyan family, I was taught the importance of hard work, dedication, and service to others. These values have been instilled in me since childhood and have shaped the person that I am today. Throughout my life, I have always sought out opportunities to give back to my community and make a difference in the lives of others.
One of my most rewarding experiences has been my work with non-profit organizations in my local community. Through volunteering with these organizations, I have gained a deeper understanding of the issues facing our community and have been able to make a tangible impact on the lives of those in need. Whether it was serving meals at a local homeless shelter, collaborating with children from our feeder schools, or participating in community clean-up events, I have always felt a sense of fulfillment in giving back to those around me.
However, as much as I have loved volunteering, my education has always been my top priority. As a first-generation college student, I have had to navigate the complexities of higher education on my own. This has not been an easy journey, but I have persevered and am now on track to achieve my educational goals.
This scholarship will be instrumental in helping me achieve those goals. As a recipient of this scholarship, I will be able to focus more fully on my studies without the financial burden of tuition weighing on me. This will allow me to take on additional coursework, participate in research opportunities, and pursue internships that will help me further my career aspirations.
More than that, this scholarship is a validation of my hard work and dedication to my education and my community. It is a reminder that my efforts to make a positive impact have not gone unnoticed and that there are people out there who believe in my potential to make a difference in the world. When I'm not studying or volunteering, you can usually find me attempting to break the world record for most cups of coffee consumed in a single day.
In the future, I plan to continue my commitment to volunteering and serving my community, both during and after my college years. I hope to use the knowledge and skills I gain through my education to make an even greater impact on the world, particularly in the areas of healthcare and education. I believe that through hard work, dedication, and a commitment to service, we can create a better world for all.

Growing up in Kenya, I was exposed to a strong sense of community and the importance of giving back. When I moved to the United States, I was determined to carry on this tradition and find ways to get involved in my new community.
As a college student, I have been fortunate enough to have access to a variety of resources and opportunities to make a positive impact in my community. One of the most important ways that I have worked to influence change is through volunteering. I have also been involved in several organizations on campus that are dedicated to community service and social justice. Through these groups, I have had the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded individuals to organize events and initiatives that promote positive change in our community. As a college-bound student from an immigrant family, I have always felt a deep sense of responsibility to make the most of the opportunities that have been afforded to me. It is through their unwavering support and encouragement that I have been able to pursue my dreams and aspirations. Just like my grandma's secret spice blend, my unique perspective as an immigrant student has helped me season my academic journey with perseverance and grit.
One of my greatest passions is healthcare. Growing up in Kenya, I witnessed the devastating effects that a lack of access to healthcare can have on individuals and communities. It was through these experiences that I developed a deep desire to make a difference in the lives of others through medicine.
As a college-bound student, I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. I am eager to take advantage of all that college has to offer, from engaging in research to volunteering in local hospitals and clinics. I am determined to excel academically and make the most of my education in order to better serve those in need. While some students might see a failed exam as the end of the world, I like to think of it as just a tiny detour on my road to success.
In addition to my passion for healthcare, I am also deeply committed to using my experiences and education to make a positive impact on the world. Whether through volunteer work or advocacy, I plan to use my platform to promote social justice and equality. I believe that everyone deserves access to quality healthcare, regardless of their background or circumstances. As a Kenyan-American, I am particularly attuned to the disparities that exist in healthcare both at home and abroad.

Andrea M Taylor Future Doctors Scholarship
As a Kenyan-American, the healthcare disparities between developed and developing countries have been a personal and powerful motivator for my passion to become a medical doctor. Having spent several summers in Kenya visiting family, I was struck by the lack of access to basic medical care in many parts of the country. The impact of these experiences has driven my desire to pursue a career in medicine and make a difference in the lives of those who are often overlooked.
Volunteering in local hospitals and clinics, as well as participating in mission trips, have further fueled my passion for medicine. I have seen the profound impact that healthcare professionals can have on the lives of their patients, particularly in underserved communities. Witnessing the need for quality medical care in underserved communities has further strengthened my commitment to pursue a career in medicine and provide the best possible care to those in need. Sometimes, when I'm feeling overwhelmed with my studies, I like to take a break and watch episodes of Grey's Anatomy. It's not exactly a realistic portrayal of medicine, but it does remind me of why I wanted to become a doctor in the first place.
In addition to my personal experiences, I have also been inspired by several books and social activities. "The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry" by John Mark Comer has emphasized the importance of building meaningful relationships with patients and taking the time to understand their unique needs. One of my favorite quotes from "The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry" is: "In the midst of the hurry, life becomes a thing to be managed rather than enjoyed." It's a good reminder that sometimes, the best way to care for our patients is to simply be present with them.
"Medical Apartheid" by Harriet A. Washington has opened my eyes to the historical injustices that have existed within the medical field, emphasizing the urgent need for equity and justice in healthcare. Whenever I read "Medical Apartheid," I couldn't help but wonder what my ancestors, who were enslaved in the United States, might have experienced at the hands of medical professionals. It's a heavy topic, but one that is important to confront in order to move towards a more just and equitable healthcare system.
As a young African woman, I am acutely aware of the disparities that exist in healthcare, particularly for minorities and women. It is my goal to use my platform as a medical doctor to advocate for these groups and work towards greater access to quality healthcare for all. Through seeking out opportunities to work with marginalized populations, particularly in developing countries where healthcare resources are often limited, I plan to make a positive impact.
My ultimate dream is to return to Kenya one day and work towards creating change in the healthcare system. Whenever I visit Kenya, I also make sure to indulge in my love for ugali, a traditional Kenyan dish made of maize flour. I like to think that this staple food gives me the energy I need to tackle the challenges of the medical field. I hope to utilize the knowledge and experience I gain as a medical doctor to develop innovative solutions that can improve access to quality healthcare for all Kenyans.
The intersection of my Kenyan heritage and American upbringing has instilled in me a unique perspective on healthcare and its global impact. I am confident that by pursuing a career in medicine, I can use my passion and experiences to make a positive impact on the world.

Growing up in a Kenyan household in the United States, I was always encouraged to work hard and strive for success. My parents emphasized the importance of education and taught me to never take it for granted. As a result, I have always been driven to excel academically and professionally.
As I entered high school, I developed a passion for science and medicine. I earned my first two healthcare certifications around the age of 16 or 17, and started working on my MA during my senior year in high school. I was fascinated by the intricate workings of the human body and the potential to make a positive impact on people's lives. This interest led me to pursue an internship at my local hospital during my senior year. There, I had the opportunity to witness firsthand the impact that doctors and healthcare professionals can have on their patients' lives. I learned how to interact with patients, observe procedures, and assist in basic care. It was an incredibly rewarding experience that solidified my decision to pursue a career in medicine.
As a woman of color, I have seen firsthand the disparities and inequalities in the healthcare system. This has driven me to not only pursue a career in medicine but to also use my platform to bring justice to the healthcare system for minorities and women. I have been deeply impacted by the struggles of those in my community who do not have equal access to healthcare. I have seen how the lack of resources and discrimination can lead to negative health outcomes and perpetuate the cycle of poverty.
My goal is to become a physician who can make a tangible difference in the lives of those who are underserved and underrepresented in the healthcare system. I want to be a leader in my community and an advocate for those who are unable to access quality healthcare. In order to achieve this, I plan to continue gaining experience through internships and volunteer opportunities. I will also work hard to maintain a high GPA and develop strong relationships with mentors in the medical field.
In the future, I plan to use my knowledge and expertise to help bridge the gap in healthcare disparities. I am passionate about promoting diversity and inclusivity in medicine, and I plan to work towards this by mentoring and inspiring future generations of underrepresented individuals in medicine. I also plan to use my influence to lobby for policy changes that will make healthcare more accessible and affordable for all.
In conclusion, my passion for medicine and my desire to bring justice to the healthcare system for minorities and women drive me to work hard and make a positive impact on the world. I am committed to pursuing this goal and am excited to see where my journey in medicine takes me.
Richard Neumann Scholarship
As I visited Kenya more frequently to visit family, I began to witness firsthand the devastating effects of the water crisis on local communities. Water sources were scarce and often contaminated, leading to a high prevalence of waterborne diseases. This experience inspired me to create a UV water filter for my science fair project, with the goal of providing a cost-effective and efficient solution to the water crisis in Kenya.
My UV water filter consisted of a regular clear plastic bottle filled with water and equipped with a UV light that destroyed harmful bacteria and viruses. I also incorporated granular activated carbon (GAC) since it is a proven option to remove certain chemicals found in unclean water. The filter was easy to use and could be produced at a low cost, making it accessible to communities in need. To test its effectiveness, I conducted a series of experiments and found that the filter significantly reduced the presence of harmful bacteria in contaminated water.
If given the necessary resources and funding, I would expand upon this project by developing a larger-scale UV water filtration system that could provide clean water to entire communities. This system would be designed to be user-friendly and cost-effective, making it accessible to communities with limited resources. In addition to the filter itself, I would also develop educational materials and outreach programs to help communities understand the importance of clean water and proper sanitation practices.
To make this project a reality, I would need funding for materials, equipment, and research. I would work with local organizations and experts to ensure that the filter met safety and regulatory standards. I would also collaborate with community leaders and organizations to ensure that the filter was culturally sensitive and met the specific needs of each community. By working together with local communities and experts, I believe that we could make a significant impact in the fight against the water crisis and improve the health and wellbeing of those in need.
In conclusion, my experience in Kenya and the water crisis inspired me to create a UV water filter that has the potential to make a significant impact in improving access to clean water. With the necessary resources and funding, I am confident that we can expand upon this project and develop a larger-scale filtration system that will help communities around the world. I am committed to continuing my efforts to improve the health and wellbeing of others and hope to make a lasting impact in the fight against the water crisis.

As an African woman with a passion for medicine, I believe I can make significant contributions to improving the health of others. From a young age, I was always fascinated by medicine and health, and I was fortunate enough to start my journey towards a career in medicine when I was just 16 years old. I began volunteering at my local hospital, and this experience opened my eyes to the importance of representation in the healthcare industry.
As a woman of African descent, I know all too well the disparities that exist in healthcare, particularly for marginalized communities. I want to help address these disparities by serving as a representative for these communities and advocating for better access to healthcare. I believe that representation matters, and I want to be a part of the solution by being a role model for other young women of color who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine.
In addition to being a representative, I have gained extensive experience in the healthcare field, particularly through my work as an intern at my local hospital. I have had the opportunity to work with patients from diverse backgrounds and learn about their unique experiences, which has given me invaluable insight into how healthcare can be improved. Through my work as an intern, I have also gained experience in a variety of areas, including patient care, medical research, and medical administration.
One of my long-term goals is to become a physician, and I am currently working towards that goal by pursuing a degree in pre-med. I believe that becoming a physician will give me the platform I need to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others. I hope to use my education and experience to develop innovative approaches to healthcare that can address the root causes of health disparities and improve outcomes for all patients.
Another way that I hope to contribute to improving the health of others is by volunteering my time and skills to organizations that focus on health and wellness. I am particularly interested in organizations that focus on improving access to healthcare and education for underserved communities. By volunteering, I hope to use my skills and knowledge to help make a positive impact in the lives of those who need it most.
In addition to my work in healthcare, I also prioritize my own personal health and wellness. I believe that eating a healthy, plant-based diet and staying physically active are essential components of maintaining good health. I have made it a priority in my own life to make healthy choices and to encourage others to do the same. I know that making healthy choices can have a profound impact on overall health and can even reverse many adverse diseases.
In closing, I believe that I have a lot to offer in terms of improving the health of others. Through my representation as an African woman and my extensive experience in the healthcare field, I believe that I can make a meaningful impact on the lives of others. By pursuing a career in medicine and volunteering my time and skills to organizations that focus on improving health and wellness, I hope to help create a world where everyone has access to the healthcare they need to live happy, healthy lives.

Growing up in a family with a history of diabetes, I have always been conscious of the importance of healthy eating and taking care of one's body. However, it was not until I became interested in the medical field that I truly understood the magnitude of the impact that proper nutrition can have on our health. As I continued my studies and began working as an intern at a hospital, I saw firsthand how diet and lifestyle choices can affect the onset and progression of various diseases.
Ever since my grandma passed away from diabetes, my perspective on health and wellness has shifted in a profound way. Her struggle with the disease, and ultimately losing her, deeply impacted me and made me realize the importance of taking care of one's health. It was a wake-up call for me and those around me to be more mindful of our diet and lifestyle choices. My personal health concerns not only rose, but I also wanted to make a positive impact on the health of others. I believe that everyone deserves to live a healthy and happy life, and I am dedicated to helping others achieve that through my career in the medical field and my personal commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
Through my work, I have witnessed the power of a healthy diet to prevent and even reverse adverse health conditions. In particular, I have seen how a plant-based diet can improve a person's health and quality of life. Research has shown that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can lower the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. As a result, I have chosen to adopt a majority plant-based diet in my own life.
I am passionate about sharing the benefits of healthy eating and fitness with others, especially those from marginalized communities who may not have access to the same resources or information. As someone who is also interested in the fields of public health and healthcare, I see the importance of promoting healthy habits in preventing and managing disease.
My decision to prioritize my health and wellness through proper nutrition and regular exercise has not only had a positive impact on my physical health but has also improved my mental health and overall wellbeing. It has given me the energy and focus to pursue my goals and passions, including my desire to make a difference in the world through a career in the medical field.
Overall, my interest in healthy eating and fitness is rooted in my family history and my experiences working in healthcare. I believe that these habits can help prevent and manage disease, and I am committed to sharing this knowledge with others and making a positive impact on the world.

As a young Black woman from Kenya, I have always known that education is the key to unlocking opportunities and making a positive impact on the world. From a young age, I have been fascinated by the field of medicine and the potential it holds to heal and uplift communities. It is my ultimate goal to become a doctor and to serve as a representation for Black women and young girls who aspire to pursue careers in medicine.
My passion for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) has been an integral part of my journey towards achieving my educational goals. One area that particularly interests me in the field of medicine is the use of technology and innovation to improve healthcare outcomes. Through my experiences in graphic design, photography, and social media management, I have developed a love for the creative side of STEAM. This has also allowed me to create my own business at the age of 14, which provided website building services, promotional photography and graphic design for small companies. However, my desire to pursue medicine has only strengthened as I have grown older and gained experience in the healthcare environment.
As an intern at my local hospital, I have had the opportunity to witness firsthand the impact that doctors and healthcare professionals can have on their patients' lives. I have also gained valuable experience by picking up hours during the holidays, where I have had the chance to work with patients from diverse backgrounds and learn about their unique experiences.
My ultimate goal is to use my education and training to make a difference in the lives of those in my community and beyond. I hope to create a positive impact by providing access to quality healthcare to underserved populations, especially in developing countries like Kenya. Through my education, I aim to learn about the latest medical advancements and technologies, which I can then bring back to my home country to help improve healthcare outcomes.
Receiving this scholarship would be a significant step towards achieving my educational goals. It would allow me to focus on my studies and pursue opportunities that will help me develop the necessary skills to make a difference in the world of medicine. I am excited about the potential that STEAM holds for innovation and progress in the medical field, and I am eager to continue my journey towards making a meaningful impact through my education.

Throughout life, we encounter routine speed bumps that eventually build our character and allow us to develop our inner strength. Ultimately, our ability to resist is determined by our inner fortitude. It is what demonstrates our abilities to those who watch our every move, as well as who determines whether or not we deserve to be given a chance. Growing up loving everything science and STEM-related, I came across a few challenges as well as outsiders who asserted that women should not pursue these fields. It did not help matters that in each of the regional and state science competitions I was a finalist in, a male won the first prize. Due to the lack of gender diversity in STEM-related fields, I questioned my belief and ability to pursue a likely career. The impression I got was that my peers did not believe that women, particularly black women, were capable of pursuing careers in STEM disciplines such as biomedical engineering, computer science, or medicine. I was motivated to become the change I wanted to see after going through a 3-step ladder on Google Images of doctor to female doctor to black female doctor in order to find representation. Eventually, I succumbed to the doubt they fed me and began to doubt myself as well. Because I let the opinions of those who did not believe in me overshadow my own, which were originally established to motivate myself, I let all opportunities I had to further my career in science pass me by. As a result, I explored other career fields, particularly education, due to the fact that it is an extremely common profession for women. However, other career fields I explored didn't have the same influence on me as medicine did. In the wake of an identity crisis and my realization that I was not subject to what others thought, I returned to my adoration of science and all that it entails. Due to rekindling my interest in science and medicine, I was able to enroll in courses relevant to my career path. As I took courses like Health Science Theory & Lab, in which I obtained certifications, I became entirely gripped with the subject matter. Because of these certifications, I have a head start in medicine and have discovered my desire for patient care, which I was able to undergo with peers who likewise share the same desire. As I struggled through my crisis of not believing I was qualified for a career in science, I realized that it increased my inner fortitude as well as my resistance to future obstacles. The more confident I became in my ability to succeed in a science-related career, the less words from peers or outsiders affected me. Having faced this adversity, I was able to realize that this was all a crucial element of my future success.

As cliché as it may seem, it has always been a dream of mine to work in the medical field and be able to help people. Not only would I like to achieve this goal, but I would also like to be a part of the representation African and Black girls need to change the stereotypes placed upon us at birth.

Despite obstacles slowing our efforts to achieve worthy goals and pursue limitless dreams, they ultimately allow us to develop levels of resistance that prepare us for future adversity, develop our inner fortitude, and acquire skills that make us more competent.
In the course of my struggle to complete virtual school during the quarantine portion of the pandemic, I started to lose sight of my apparent career path. I began to contest myself and my capability, lost my adoration for science, and even desired to alter my career path. I was met with obstacles, particularly remarks from others, which began to leave wounds. After considering these words as valid, I permitted them to become the essence of my identity. What determines our resilience and willingness is whether or not overcome the adversity we face. If we have a tendency to experience life intensely, learning from our hardships will contribute to our inner strength and our ability to overcome future adversity.

Since me being a little girl, I always knew I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field. The idea of studying the anatomy of the body and helping people get better as a job has fascinated me for years and continues to as I start my career pathway. As I've grown up, I realized the healthcare system, like many other systems, is corrupt in multiple areas, but especially in racial diversity. Racial diversity in healthcare is prominent for reasons such as being able to asses the needs of minority patients and receiving higher quality care.
I always think to the episode of Grey's Anatomy where Jackson Avery realizes that he must quit his job as a plastic suergon in order to focus on the inequities in the healthcare system as well as the pandemic's disproportionally large impact on communities of color everywhere. He took initiative to step up with his family name, and use it for a better cause. Although Jackson Avery is a fictional character, his advocacy for justice for the healthcare system inspires me to do the same in the future. I hope to pursue a career in the public healthcare area and be an individual of representation to other black women around the world.
