As I think about personal adversity at the age of 17, what stands out in my mind is the loss of my grandmother and best friend in April of 2021. I had just become a freshman in high school and I was not able to focus on my studies or participate in any extracurricular activities. I was completely heartbroken and empty, I felt defeated because God ignored my prayers for her healing. I thought my life was over and I could not go on. Due to my losing focus on my studies, I struggled to complete my freshman year with a good overall grade point average. Knowing the high expectations that my grandmother had for me was my only encouragement to push forward. My dad sat next to me and said, "She passed away," and those words shattered the rest of my freshman year. My best friend, the only person I could talk to without judgment, was gone, and I couldn't breathe. At the funeral, I can't even look at her in the casket. It's all a blur of hugs, tears, screams, and condolences. My pastor is giving the eulogy, and he speaks fervently about how she served God, adopted and took care of so many people. I am one of those people. We laughed and talked like best friends, and she imparted so much wisdom into me. This paper is about those lessons. Both teens had vices and they understood each other to the point where they became each other’s vice. Then, at the end of those seven days, they were ripped apart with no explanation. They reunite at a Black author book conference where they both realize that the love they shared never left, it simply took on a different shape. This book also demonstrates just how history, past traumas and experiences do not define a person. Both characters in the novel experience so much heartache and pain as teenagers, but we see how despite the hardships they learn how to grow into healthy adults, first starting by cutting their vices of drugs and drinking. Both characters work to encourage the young people around them to not fall into the traps that society has set for them, the same traps that they fell into. Shane especially, because he makes an intentional effort to counsel children that attend different schools where he teaches.

I have decided to further my education so that I can accomplish a dream that I have had since I was very little. My dream of being an OBGYN (Obstetrician and Gynecologist) will become a reality if I were to receive this scholarship. As a child, I always wanted to play a doctor with my parents. I have a true desire to help people, especially those who are overlooked and underrepresented when it comes to healthcare. This scholarship will help me pay for college so that goal, despite how challenging it may be to achieve, will be slightly more attainable. I hope that attending college prepares me both intellectually and socially for a career and my adult life. As I am approaching my college years and continue to grow in knowledge; I desire to learn more about science and the large breadth of knowledge that it entails; specifically, reproductive health. In AP Biology we are learning about positive and negative feedback in cellular communication. Childbirth and menstrual cycles are examples of positive feedback, where the response to the stimulus increases because of signals sent to encourage that response. Both of these examples, demonstrate that humans need positive feedback for a stimulus to increase, equivalently, more Black women have to become successful doctors so that younger Afro-American girls see that a job in the medical field is within reach. Representation matters, not only for the youth but for the other women under their care. According to the CDC, Black women are three times more likely to die while pregnant or during their first trimester, than their counterparts of other races. Given the technology and the resources that are available in hospitals today, this is heartbreaking. There should be no reason for these racial disparities in our modern-day healthcare systems. In order to bring change, my community has to step up to be the change that we want to see in the field of medicine. Alongside helping people, a college education will provide me with the knowledge and ability to develop and hone in on skills like critical thinking, so that I will be better prepared for medical school. Attending college prepares me intellectually, socially and financially to become a productive citizen in society. Furthering my education after my undergraduate studies is crucial to my ultimate dream, and this scholarship will help me to take one step closer to my goals and aspirations.
