The idea of truth appears as a guiding light illuminating our way in the tapestry of life, where the strands of our experiences blend with the fabric of faith. But even in the middle of the many interpretations and points of view that tint our perception, the difference between "my truth" and "God's truth" stands out as a ray of light through the mist of doubt.
We come across the ageless knowledge that addresses the core of truth in the passages of scripture. As the apostle Paul so beautifully states in 2 Corinthians 5:7, "Because it is by faith and not by sight that we live." Here is a profound truth that speaks to the core of our souls, tucked away within the hallowed pages of the Bible. It is a truth that reaches beyond the bounds of human awareness and asks us to give up control over the transient illusions of the material world and submit to a higher reality that is led by faith.
It is true that the fundamental differences between "our truth" and "God's truth" stem from this. As creatures constrained by the limitations of our materialistic aspirations and earthly viewpoints, we are frequently inclined to carve out our routes according to the rules of our comprehension. However, by doing so, we run the risk of being lost in the tangles of illusion and self-deception and going off course. But see, amid the stormy sea we have created for ourselves, there lies a sure anchor—a truth that never wavers because it is based on God's everlasting wisdom. In Psalm 119:105, the singer declares, "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." The eternal truths found in the hallowed pages of scripture provide us comfort because they are impervious to the fluctuating tides of public opinion.
I am reminded of the transformational impact of accepting God's truth amid life's difficulties as I think back on my journey. During the events of 2020, I became entangled in the web of my wants and lost my way while looking for happiness and fulfillment. But in the middle of all of this, I found scripture to be a ray of hope. I had a strong feeling of purpose and clarity as I turned the pages of the Bible. I noticed that as I read each verse, God's truth shone brighter in the darkness, drawing me nearer to His heart. It was an epiphany that changed my outlook on life and guided me away from the road of self-destruction and toward a prosperous and fulfilling existence.
To sum up, the difference between "our truth" and "God's truth" is a striking reminder of the timeless knowledge that directs our actions throughout life. May we find comfort in the immutable truths of scripture, rooted in the unwavering love and grace of our Heavenly Father, as we traverse the difficulties of existence. Because it is in accepting God's truth that we find our actual selves—walking by faith rather than by sight, led by the everlasting light that illuminates our way.
Kirk I. Woods Memorial Scholarship
My life's journey has always been illuminated by education. Being a Black immigrant from Haiti, I can attest to the doors and transformational power of education. It's not only about earning a degree when I pursue higher education; it's also about giving myself the knowledge, abilities, and self-assurance I need to have a significant impact on the world.
To be free from the limitations of preconceptions and societal judgments, in my opinion, one must acquire education. I can challenge others' preconceived views about my potential and ability, and it gives me the chance to redefine what it means to be a Black woman in America. I am laying the groundwork for future generations of young girls who, like me, dare to dream bigger than the constraints placed upon them by investing in my education.
My lifelong desire to be an obstetrician and gynecologist will come true with education. In addition to being highly academically interesting, working in the medical industry is extremely fulfilling since it allows me to have a significant direct impact on the lives of others. I will acquire the skills and information required through school to offer women from all backgrounds the high-quality medical care they need, making sure they get the kind and respectable treatment they deserve. However, my goals go well beyond what is offered by the institution. My education will enable me to take the lead in bringing about change in both my community and society as a whole. Equipped with an extensive comprehension of social justice matters and a steadfast dedication to serving others, I am resolved to champion the cause of individuals whose opinions have been suppressed and disenfranchised.
I see myself being actively involved in projects in the future that try to solve healthcare inequities, especially in populations that are marginalized and neglected. I'm dedicated to leveraging my education and privilege to help those in need, whether that be through supporting legislative reforms that prioritize equal access to healthcare, volunteering at free clinics, or attending community health fairs.
Furthermore, my education will provide me with the tools and platform I need to guide and motivate the following generation of leaders. As a Black Haitian woman working in medicine, I understand the value of visibility and representation in encouraging young people to follow their goals despite potential setbacks. To ensure that aspiring healthcare professionals from underrepresented backgrounds have the same opportunities to flourish and succeed, I wish to support and encourage them through outreach initiatives and mentorship programs.
Essentially, education is the foundation upon which I will construct a future full of meaning, influence, and service—rather than merely a means to a goal. I am constantly reminded of my enormous duty to support people who have been disadvantaged and underserved in society and to give back to society at every turn in my scholastic journey. I am influencing not just my future but also a more promising and just society as a whole by pursuing an education.

I see myself as a delicate blossom reaching toward the sun in the colorful garden of life, seeking growth and meaning. I've learned to withstand adversity like a flower and come out stronger and more determined. I can feel the roots of my leadership path blending into the soil of my community as I stand among the blossoms of my history.
My childhood has been a rich source of inspiration for my enthusiasm for helping people. Through my involvement in several activities, I learned the value of leadership in my community even as a young child. I enjoyed encouraging positive change and growth, whether it was by teaching younger students or planning food drives for the homeless.
As I grew into a Florida State University undergraduate student, I began to pursue my goals in the STEM fields, specifically obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN). Motivated by the complicated nature of life and the wonders of childbirth, I decided to pursue a career in obstetrics and gynecology to promote the well-being and health of women.
I've looked for chances to have a significant influence in my community as part of my efforts to develop as a leader. I've worked with other students to advocate for underrepresented populations and bring attention to healthcare inequities as a member of the National Society of Black Women in Medicine. My participation in Sister2Service has also allowed me to mentor and uplift the kids at Walkerford Daycare, planting seeds of self-determination and optimism for the future.
I see my future pursuits as a vivid tapestry of my impact on the world, with my educational aspirations and job goals in STEM serving as the petals. My goal is to acquire the necessary information and abilities to tackle urgent healthcare issues and promote women's health through demanding academic pursuits and practical experiences.
I hope to use my degree to make a lasting impact on the world, with the scent of ambition leading my way. I'm dedicated to using my knowledge to improve the lives of others, whether it be by innovative research, kind treatment of patients, or support of marginalized populations.
I am only one flower in the vast garden of humanity, but even so, I feel that I can make a difference in the world by embracing leadership, pursuing my talents in STEM, and working toward impact. Like a flower that blossoms and enhances its environment, I'm motivated to thrive and leave a long-lasting legacy of development, compassion, and transformation.

The goal of creating a more compassionate and understanding international community is a glimmer of hope in a world too frequently characterized by conflict and division. I am motivated to contribute to this admirable endeavor as I consider my special abilities and skills, which are all strands in the web of promoting empathy and understanding.
My love of design and décor is the driving force behind my participation. I think that aesthetics can elicit feelings that bring people together rather than drive them apart and can even transcend language borders. I want to create environments that encourage people from different backgrounds to join together, promoting a sense of belonging and understanding, using my acute eye for design and passion of decorating. Whether it's through carefully planned events or interior design projects, my goal is to use style to celebrate our common humanity and cross cultural barriers.
My pursuit of developing empathy also extends to my culinary arts practice. Across linguistic, cultural, and ideological divides, food has a unique power to bring people together on a visceral level. I want to create culinary experiences that not only tempt the senses but also nurture the soul, and I have years of experience developing a variety of culinary abilities in this regard. I think sharing meals together is a great way to foster empathy and understanding, whether it's by organizing ethnic dinner parties or working with neighborhood groups to exchange recipes and cooking skills.
Apart from my passion for fashion and food, music holds a significant position in my life as a medium of communication and expression. I am an accomplished pianist and violinist who is aware of the global language of music and its power to elicit strong feelings and cut through boundaries. I want to connect people via the beauty of sound to create moments of shared delight and reflection through performances and collaborative musical initiatives. This will help to promote empathy.
My capacity to unite people is one of my greatest abilities, even beyond these lonely efforts. Fostering genuine connections is, in my opinion, essential to developing empathy and understanding, whether it is by planning social events, leading thought-provoking discussions, or just being a listening ear. I work to foster an international community based on empathy and compassion by establishing environments where people feel heard, respected, and understood. My special abilities in fashion, food, music, and community development are useful resources in the effort to create a more compassionate and understanding international community. I'm dedicated to doing my part to create a world where empathy transcends boundaries and draws people together in our shared humanity by using these strengths to forge meaningful connections and celebrate our shared humanity.

So You Want to Be a Mental Health Professional Scholarship
In my journey as a college student, my interest in mental health is not merely academic but deeply personal, shaped by the challenges and triumphs I have encountered. As Soraya, a first-year student majoring in Human Development and Family Sciences at Florida State University, I am compelled to take actions that contribute to a positive impact in the realm of mental health.
I had to deal with the difficulties of mental health from an early age, going through phases of melancholy, anxiety, and even contemplating suicide when I was a teenager. Loneliness, broken relationships, and a deep sense of hopelessness characterized the voyage. But through all of the darkness, there was a ray of light, and my deeply rooted Christian religion gave me comfort. It turned into the rock that kept me afloat during the storm and gave me strength that was beyond my comprehension.
These personal experiences have not only fueled my passion for mental health but have instilled in me a commitment to destigmatizing conversations surrounding mental health challenges. I recognize that the journey is unique for each individual, and fostering a supportive and understanding community is paramount.
As a college student, I believe several impactful actions can be taken to contribute to a positive mental health environment:
I aim to use my voice and experiences to advocate for mental health awareness within the college community. Organizing awareness campaigns, participating in mental health events, and sharing personal stories can help break down the stigma and encourage open conversations.
Getting involved in or starting a support group at college can give people a safe place to talk about their issues, get advice, and build a sense of belonging. Being reminded that one is not traveling alone can be a very reassuring and motivating thing.
I can make a positive impact on the lives of people by volunteering with mental health groups. Through my involvement in mental health awareness initiatives and counseling center assistance, I can make a tangible difference in the lives of people who are going through similar struggles.
Promoting appropriate self-care behaviors is crucial. I may educate people on stress reduction, mindfulness, and other self-care methods through workshops, seminars, or online resources, enabling them to place a higher priority on their mental health.
My experience with mental health has influenced my viewpoint and strengthened my resolve to have a good influence both during and after my time in college. By narrating my experience, pushing for awareness, and getting involved in programs, I want to help establish a mental health-conscious campus culture that values everyone's understanding, sensitivity, and support. I have a personal desire to foster a culture of compassion and resilience within the campus community, so this is more than just an academic interest.

I find myself intricately woven into the fabric of change, working earnestly to address a social issue close to my heart. As Soraya, a first-year college student at Florida State University majoring in Human Development and Family Sciences, my journey is fueled by a profound commitment to make a positive impact on the lives of those facing adversity.
From my early days in Haiti to the present moment, my immigrant experience has been a source of inspiration and resilience. The challenges of adapting to a new culture and educational system have shaped my perspective, instilling in me a deep sense of empathy and a desire to contribute to societal well-being.
The social issue that resonates most profoundly with me is the discrimination faced by Black women in healthcare. My goal is not just to provide medical care but to advocate for equitable and compassionate treatment for every woman, regardless of her background.
To address this issue, I have actively engaged in volunteering at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, offering my time and dedication to support individuals facing health challenges. My academic pursuits in Human Development and Family Sciences, coupled with a minor in Biological Science, equip me with the knowledge and skills to understand the complexities of the human experience and advocate for positive change. I am driven by the belief that comprehensive healthcare should be a right, not a privilege and that addressing this social issue requires a multifaceted approach that encompasses education, advocacy, and community engagement.
In addition to my academic and volunteer endeavors, I am actively involved in initiating conversations about healthcare disparities within my college community. By organizing awareness campaigns, engaging in dialogues, and collaborating with like-minded individuals, I strive to foster a culture of understanding and empathy that transcends racial and gender boundaries.
Looking forward, my goals extend beyond my achievements. I envision a future where every Black woman can access healthcare without fear of discrimination, where cultural competence is inherent in medical practices, and where the healthcare system reflects the diversity of the population it serves.
In conclusion, my journey to address the social issue of healthcare discrimination against Black women is a testament to my commitment to effecting positive change. As I navigate my college years and work towards becoming an OBGYN, I am dedicated to being a catalyst for transformation, advocating for a healthcare system that prioritizes equality, compassion, and the well-being of every individual. This is not just my journey; it is a collective effort to nurture change and create a more equitable and inclusive society.

Through mentorship, advocacy, and active participation in initiatives that promote gender diversity in STEM, I hope to be a source of inspiration for future generations of women aspiring to make their mark in scientific fields. My choice to pursue STEM is an active commitment to challenge norms, break barriers, and redefine the narrative for women in the field. In the vast expanse of higher education, I find myself at the intersection of two seemingly divergent paths—medicine and entrepreneurship. Each holds a distinct allure, and together they form the foundation of my ambitious pursuit of a fulfilling and dynamic career.
My primary focus in higher education revolves around medicine, where my goal is to become an Obstetrician-Gynecologist (OBGYN). The intricacies of women's health have always captivated me, and I am drawn to the profound impact that healthcare can have on individuals' lives, especially during significant moments such as childbirth. This noble pursuit stems from a deep-seated desire to contribute to the well-being of women, providing compassionate and comprehensive healthcare. However, my ambitions extend beyond the realm of medicine. I harbor a passion for creativity that permeates my soul. I find immense joy in designing, styling, and creating, particularly in the enchanting domain of weddings and events. It is this love for aesthetics and the art of celebration that fuels my entrepreneurial aspirations.
I want to start my own business as a wedding and event planner so I can use my imagination to create unique experiences. The conviction that my love of medicine and my natural creative ability may live peacefully is what motivated me to set out on this two-pronged adventure. I can help and heal people through health, but I can also incorporate my artistic vision into happy and festive occasions through entrepreneurship. My decision to become an entrepreneur was motivated more by a desire to use my creative abilities to make people happy than just a desire to maximize profits. I firmly believe that business success is not solely measured by financial gains but by the positive impact made on individuals' lives. By prioritizing client satisfaction, I aim to attract more people and cultivate a thriving business as a result.
Success in both medicine and entrepreneurship requires a unique blend of skills, dedication, and a genuine passion for making a difference. I am confident in my ability to succeed in my business endeavors for several reasons. First and foremost, my commitment to the well-being of others, whether through healthcare or celebratory events, serves as a driving force. Additionally, my attention to detail, organizational skills, and unwavering dedication to excellence contribute to the foundation of my prospective success. A successful life, to me, transcends material wealth and conventional markers of achievement. It encompasses a harmonious blend of personal fulfillment, meaningful contributions to the well-being of others, and the continuous pursuit of passions. Success lies in the ability to make a positive impact, leave a lasting legacy, and find joy in the journey.
My journey through higher education and into entrepreneurship is a testament to the fusion of diverse passions. From the noble pursuit of medicine to the creative realm of entrepreneurship, my path reflects a commitment to a multifaceted and fulfilling career. Life is often compared to a journey, and my path has been a transformative one, akin to the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly. The lessons learned from obstacles encountered along this journey have been fundamental to my later success, with one pivotal moment standing out – a period of deep personal challenge during my teenage years.
Arriving in a new country at the tender age of five marked the beginning of my transformative journey. The challenges of being an immigrant shaped my early years, forcing me to adapt and navigate a new culture. However, it was during my adolescence, at the age of 16, that I faced an even more profound challenge—one that tested my resilience to its limits.
During this time, I grappled with anxiety, depression, and overwhelming thoughts of suicide. For a year and a half, I isolated myself, cutting off connections and withdrawing from social media, spiraling into a dark abyss where the desire to end it all felt overpowering. It was a period of profound despair, a cocoon of darkness that enveloped me entirely.
However, within the cocoon of despair, a transformation was unfolding. In the depths of my struggle, I found an unexpected source of strength – my faith in God. It was the divine force that lifted me, providing a glimmer of hope and the courage to continue my journey. Like a butterfly emerging from its cocoon, I began to grow, shedding the weight of despair and embracing the light of hope. This experience taught me the invaluable lesson that even in the darkest moments, there is potential for growth and renewal. It highlighted the strength within me that I never knew existed, a strength that allowed me to rise above my challenges. I learned that resilience is not about avoiding difficulties but about finding the strength to endure and emerge stronger on the other side.
The process of overcoming adversity also taught me the importance of self-discovery and self-expression. In the aftermath of my struggles, I embarked on a journey of learning more about myself. As I stepped into the halls of Florida State University, I saw it as an opportunity not just for academic growth but as a canvas to express myself positively. Here, I am learning to spread my wings, expressing myself in new and positive ways. The university environment serves as a fertile ground for my personal and academic growth, providing the support and resources needed to continue my transformation. Choosing OBGYN as my field of study is an organic fusion of my deep-seated love for children, the pursuit of understanding the complexities of the reproductive system, and a genuine desire to contribute to women's health. The disparities in healthcare access for minority communities, particularly in the field of OBGYN, propel me to play an active role in breaking down barriers and advocating for equitable care.
As a Black woman aspiring to make a mark in the medical field, I am acutely aware of the challenges that lie ahead. The underrepresentation of individuals who look like me in the medical profession not only underscores the importance of diversifying the field but also serves as a source of inspiration. I carry the torch of representation, aspiring to become a beacon for aspiring Black medical professionals and a catalyst for change in healthcare dynamics. In both the short and long term, my goals are intertwined with a commitment to serving my community. In the immediate future, I aim to complete my medical education, acquire the necessary skills, and immerse myself in the practical aspects of OBGYN. My long-term vision involves establishing a medical practice that prioritizes accessibility, cultural sensitivity, and comprehensive care for all women, irrespective of their backgrounds.
However, the road to realizing these goals is paved with financial hurdles. As a college student, I find myself grappling with the daunting challenge of tuition expenses, a burden that threatens to impede my progress. This scholarship is not merely a financial aid but a key that unlocks doors to opportunity and empowerment. Finishing college without accumulating debts is not just a personal aspiration but a strategic move toward achieving my long-term goals. This scholarship is a lifeline, not only alleviating the financial strain but also empowering me to focus on my studies and extracurricular pursuits that contribute to my growth as a future OBGYN.
Furthermore, the scholarship serves as a validation of my journey, a recognition of the unique hurdles faced by underrepresented minorities in the medical field. It provides a tangible symbol of support, motivating me to persist in the face of challenges and to continue aspiring to become a trailblazer in a field that is yearning for diversity and inclusion. In conclusion, my chosen field of study is a manifestation of my commitment to women's health, representation, and the dismantling of healthcare disparities. As a Black woman in the medical field, I am determined to overcome challenges and pave the way for those who will follow. This scholarship is not just financial aid; it is a beacon of opportunity that will propel me toward achieving my aspirations and making a meaningful impact in the medical landscape.

Girls Ready to Empower Girls
In the garden of life, women stand as blossoms, their journey marked by intricate petals that unfold through challenges and triumphs. My own narrative is interwoven with the resolute strength of a woman who has been my guiding light and unwavering support – my mother. Her story, akin to the blooming of delicate petals, is a testament to the resilience of women facing life's obstacles. Our journey began when I was just five years old, as my mother and I immigrated to the U.S. from Haiti, seeking opportunities and a better life. Together, we navigated the complexities of adapting to a new culture, language, and way of life. My mother's presence, a constant amidst the unfamiliar, provided a sense of security and love that shaped my understanding of what it means to overcome adversity.
In the garden, blossoms face the challenges of weather, yet they endure and thrive. Similarly, my mother confronted numerous obstacles, witnessing our struggles in a foreign land. Through financial hardships, cultural adjustments, and the trials of immigration, she stood firm. I vividly recall moments when the weight of our circumstances seemed insurmountable, yet, like a blossom bending in the wind, my mother knelt in prayer, seeking strength from God. Her prayers became a source of inspiration and resilience. In moments of uncertainty, she found solace in her faith, a reminder that even in the face of adversity, there is a higher purpose guiding our path. Witnessing her unwavering commitment to both her faith and our well-being instilled in me a profound sense of hope and determination.
My mother's sacrifices were not limited to the challenges of immigration; they extended to the daily sacrifices she made for my well-being. Despite facing her own struggles, she consistently placed my needs above her own. Her selflessness, much like the nurturing care a blossom provides to its surroundings, created an environment in which I could grow, learn, and dream. Motivated by the sacrifices she made, I have set my sights on a career as an Obstetrician-Gynecologist (OBGYN). My aspiration goes beyond professional success; it is a heartfelt commitment to giving back to the woman who has given me everything. I dream of paying off her house, a symbolic gesture of gratitude for the stability and love she provided amid life's storms.
My mother is more than a woman in my life; she is the embodiment of resilience and love. Like a blossom weathering the elements, she has faced adversity with grace and strength. Her unwavering support has fueled my educational and career journey, and as I aspire to become an OBGYN, I carry her spirit of resilience and sacrifice with me. The blossoms of her strength continue to inspire me, guiding my path towards a future where I can repay her kindness and contribute positively to the lives of others.

Theresa Lord Future Leader Scholarship
Maya Angelou once said, “I'm a woman phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That's me.” The only person who has ever moved me after God is Maya Angelou. Her poetry has always moved and resonated with me. I am a smart, educated Black woman who overcame many challenges to get to where I am now. I was born in Haiti and immigrated with my parents when I was five. During my whole life, I have always been told that we came to this country in search of "a better life." America, of course, has a lot to offer, but I do believe that to be the case. I adore my nation and my Haitian background. My culture, diversity, and music all have my heart. I will always be proud of where I come from. Being a Caribbean in America has sometimes been hard. Many of my classmates viewed me as a distinct species, but I was, in many ways, like them. Then came stereotypical comments, such as, “You don’t look Haitian” “What did you even eat in Haiti?” and “Go back to your country.” I was viewed as an outsider and a person who did not belong, but I ignored them because I had a purpose and God had brought me to America to be someone extraordinary. My time in America has given me the ability to push myself even when it seems like there is nothing more to do. I am constantly trying to improve my knowledge and creativity. My desire to keep studying and go to class has strengthened. I believe everyone should be allowed to receive a top-notch education and training in this country of possibility. I place a high value on my academics, which have always been the foundation of my family's accomplishments. I developed an interest in the healthcare field, which led me to enroll in health science studies. I have a passion for the human body system and majoring in health science will allow me to better understand how the human body functions. My curiosity will always be sparked by learning about how our bodies function as a whole and how they all contribute to our everyday lives. Yet the reproductive system is one area that has always caught my attention. I feel joy and purpose in being able to assist moms in giving birth to new human beings. I want to have a part in assisting mothers in having a safe and healthy birth every day of my life, even if this work might occasionally include a lot of dangers. Being known as one of the best OBGYN doctors is something I want to and will accomplish. Being a Caribbean living in America for years has taught me many things, including that I will never stop learning and that success is possible. Experience has taught me that it is important to refrain from letting other people get into your thoughts because if they had, I could have lost my shining spirit. When they tell you that you cannot, you respond that you can and will. When Maya Angelou writes in her poems that being at ease in your skin as a woman leads to empowerment, it always gives me comfort. It is based on how you see yourself; not how other people see you. I see myself as a beautiful, talented Haitian woman who will never lose hope.
