Whenever I think of a role model in my life, I think of my dad. The definition of a role model is someone that you look up to and someone you strive to be like. My dad is my role model for many reasons, and his life story is just one of them. My dad grew up poor in a broken, sometimes abusive single-parent household. Despite these difficult circumstances, my dad never let his background define him. Instead, he worked hard to overcome his circumstances and achieve his goals. One of the most impressive things about my dad is that he could not afford college, yet he still worked his way up from the bottom of the maritime industry to become an area VP. This shows his determination and work ethic. He never let his lack of formal education hold him back. Another reason my dad is my role model is because of his dedication to his family. He never missed a dance recital or soccer game; he even coached my brothers' and my soccer teams. This shows how much he values spending time with his family and supporting us in our pursuits. His dedication to my mom is remarkable. He offers each of us so much love through his actions and words. One of the qualities I admire most about my dad is his non-judgmental and humble nature. He never judges others based on their background, wealth, or status. Instead, he treats everyone with kindness and respect, regardless of who they are. This is a quality that I strive to emulate in my own life. My dad also shares his wisdom with his children. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience that he is always willing to share. Whether it's business advice, life lessons, or general knowledge, he always offers guidance and support. In addition to his successful career in the maritime industry, my dad started his own business when he turned 40. He has since turned that business, as well as four other businesses, into successful enterprises. This shows his entrepreneurial spirit and ability to take risks and make things happen. My dad is my role model because of his perseverance, dedication to family, humble and non-judgmental nature, willingness to share wisdom, and entrepreneurial spirit. He has overcome difficult circumstances and achieved success through hard work and determination. His values and qualities are ones that I strive to emulate in my own life, and I am grateful for the example he sets for me every day.

As a student, managing my personal wellness is essential to my success in both academics and life. I've found that practicing emotional intelligence and physical exercise are the key components of my wellness routine. Emotional intelligence has become an integral part of my life. I make sure to take some time out of my day to engage in self-reflection and introspection. I try to identify my emotions and understand how they are affecting my mental and physical state. This helps me to manage my emotions better and avoid letting them control me. Additionally, I practice active listening and empathy toward others, which enables me to build positive relationships with my peers and professors. Another crucial aspect of my wellness routine is physical exercise. I make sure to incorporate at least 30 minutes of physical activity several days per week, whether it's a brisk walk or a workout at the gym. This not only helps me to stay physically healthy but also creates positive energy, which elevates my mood and helps me to stay motivated throughout the day. Maintaining my wellness has benefits many that have helped me succeed as a student. Firstly, it has enhanced my cognitive abilities, allowing me to think more clearly and creatively. When I am in a good state of mind, I am better equipped to retain information and make connections between concepts, which is essential in college. Secondly, managing my emotions has helped me to reduce stress and anxiety, which can often be overwhelming during college. By staying calm and collected, I can approach my coursework and exams with a clear mind, increasing my chances of success. Also, physical exercise helps me to improve my overall health and stamina, allowing me to stay focused and energized throughout the day. It has also improved my sleep patterns, enabling me to get a good night's rest, which is crucial for memory, thinking and processing information. In addition to these benefits, maintaining my wellness has also enabled me to build strong relationships with my peers and professors. By being emotionally intelligent and empathetic, I can connect with others on a deeper level, which has helped me to form lasting friendships and positive working relationships. This has proved invaluable, especially during group projects and team assignments. Managing my wellness through emotional intelligence and physical exercise has been instrumental in my success as a student. By staying mentally and physically healthy, I have been able to improve my cognitive abilities, reduce stress and anxiety, and build strong relationships with my family, peers and professors. I try to encourage my friends and family to prioritize their wellness, as it is crucial to achieving academic success and overall well-being.

I have always been passionate about reducing poverty and creating a positive impact in my community. That's why I have been exploring potential careers in business that can help me achieve my goals. My father grew up in poverty. He has described times when they had no food, electricity or water. I couldn’t imagine what it was like. Thankfully, he understood that opportunities and hard work not only lifted him out of poverty, but he has created businesses that have created jobs and education to help others lift themselves out of poverty. One of the most rewarding aspects of a business career is the opportunity to create employment opportunities and promote economic growth as my dad has done. As a business manager or owner, I can play a significant role in creating and implementing strategies that foster job creation and reduce poverty. By prioritizing the well-being of employees, a strong culture and promoting a positive work environment, I can help create stable and sustainable jobs that provide individuals and families with the financial security they need to thrive. I am particularly drawn to the idea of supporting local initiatives and community development projects such as mentor programs for underprivileged children. Also, by partnering with local universities, colleges, and business and community leaders, I can help create programs and initiatives that address the root causes of poverty and promote economic growth. For example, I can work with local businesses and colleges to create training programs and mentorship opportunities that help individuals acquire the skills and experience they need to succeed in the workforce. In addition, a business career can provide me with a diverse range of opportunities to learn and grow. From marketing and finance to operations management and human resources, many different areas of business offer unique challenges and opportunities for growth. By continually learning and developing new skills, I can become a more effective leader and contribute more to poverty reduction efforts. Overall, I strongly believe that a business career can be an incredibly fulfilling way to reduce poverty and make a positive impact in my community. By prioritizing the well-being of employees, promoting teamwork, and supporting local initiatives, I can help create a more equitable and prosperous society for my community and beyond. I am excited about the potential of this career path and look forward to exploring different opportunities to make a meaningful impact in my community.
Haywood Reed Jr. Well Being Scholarship
I have firsthand experience with a family member who had mental struggles during his sophomore and junior years. Luckily, our parents recognized the problem and sought professional help. Watching him go through this painful process, I came to recognize that he was able to develop a strong Emotional Intelligence and was able to get in control of his emotions and recognize unhealthy obstacles in his life and deal with them effectively. Emotional Intelligence (EI) refers to the capacity to recognize, understand, and manage our own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. By adopting the practice of studying EI, I can significantly improve my mental and emotional health. In school, where stressors are plentiful and mental health issues are on the rise, studying EI can be an effective tool for managing my emotional and mental well-being. To start, it is important to recognize the benefits of studying EI. Developing EI can improve my ability to cope with stress, increase my resilience, and enhance our relationships, as I saw in my brother’s case. By improving my understanding of my own emotions and the emotions of those around us, I can communicate more effectively and build stronger connections with others. These skills are essential for managing mental and emotional health in school. To begin studying EI, I am starting with the basics. This includes becoming familiar with the four key components of EI: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Self-awareness involves recognizing our own emotions and the impact they have on our thoughts and behavior. Self-management involves regulating our emotions and managing stress effectively. Social awareness involves recognizing and understanding the emotions of others, while relationship management involves building and maintaining positive relationships. Once I have a foundational understanding of EI, I can start to apply these skills to my daily life. For example, I can use self-awareness to recognize when I am feeling stressed or overwhelmed and take steps to manage those emotions in a healthy way, such as practicing mindfulness or taking a break to relax. I will use social awareness to be more empathetic and understanding of others and to communicate more effectively with my peers and teachers. Using my knowledge and discipline of emotional intelligence, I can also create a safe space for my family, friends and other students to manage their mental and emotional health. This involves creating an environment where the people around me feel comfortable talking about their emotions and seeking support from their family, peers and teachers. To create a safe space, I need to establish clear boundaries and guidelines. This includes setting expectations for respectful communication and confidentiality. By openly discussing mental health and creating a supportive environment around me, I can reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and encourage others to seek help when they need it. In addition to creating a safe space, it is important to be an active listener and provide emotional support to my peers. This involves actively listening to others without judgment and offering empathy and support. I can also help them to feel empowered to seek counseling services or other support networks. In conclusion, studying emotional intelligence is an effective tool for managing mental and emotional health in school. By developing my understanding of my own emotions and the emotions of others, I can improve my ability to cope with stress, build stronger relationships, and create a supportive environment for my family and friends. By creating a safe space and providing emotional support to others, I can reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and promote mental health and well-being in my community.

Poverty is a pressing issue that has been plaguing the United States for decades. It is a multifaceted problem that affects individuals and families in numerous ways, from inadequate housing to lack of access to education and healthcare. As someone who is passionate about reducing poverty and improving the lives of people in our community, I believe that creating job opportunities and a positive work environment can be an effective solution to this complex problem. My interest in poverty reduction and my belief in the power of employment opportunities led me to envision a business that can create a significant impact in reducing poverty. As a business owner, I want to prioritize the well-being of my employees and create a workplace culture that supports them. This is because I believe that a positive work environment is not only good for business but also for the mental health and overall well-being of employees. My goal is to create a company with a strong culture that values diversity and inclusivity and provides a work-life balance for its employees. One of the things I have learned through my involvement in sports, particularly cheerleading, is the importance of teamwork, communication, and trust. These skills are vital in building a successful business and can help foster a positive work environment. By promoting effective communication, collaboration, and trust, I believe that my business can create a strong sense of community that is supportive and encourages employees to work together towards a common goal. Furthermore, my interest in emotional intelligence has helped me develop empathy, compassion, and the ability to recognize and respond to the emotions of others. This skill set can be useful in creating a workplace culture that supports and values employees and their personal and professional growth. A youth mentorship program for underprivileged children is a vital tool for improving their academic and personal growth. The program seeks to pair underprivileged children with positive role models who can inspire them to reach their full potential. Building a successful mentorship program requires planning, implementation, and evaluation. Here is my detailed plan on how to build a youth mentorship program for underprivileged children. 1. Identify the Target Audience The first step in building a youth mentorship program is to identify the target audience. In this case, the target audience is underprivileged children who lack access to quality education, supportive communities, and positive role models. This could include children from low-income families, refugees, or those who have experienced trauma. 2. Determine Program Goals and Objectives The next step is to determine the program goals and objectives. The goals of the mentorship program should align with the mission of the organization. The objectives should be SMART. For example, the goal of the mentorship program could be to improve academic achievement, while the objectives could include increasing attendance rates, improving grades, and enhancing study skills. 3. Recruit Mentors Recruiting mentors is a critical step in building a successful mentorship program. My vision would include mentors that had similar backgrounds as children that have achieved a high level of success in their personal and professional lives. These individuals are also passionate about working with children and have the necessary skills to support them. The recruitment process would involve partnering with local universities, and businesses to identify potential mentors. 4. Train Mentors After recruiting mentors, the next step is to train them on how to mentor underprivileged children. The training should cover topics such as child development, cultural sensitivity, communication skills, and mentorship best practices. The training will also include background checks, safety protocols, and other procedures to ensure the safety of the children. 5. Match Mentors with Mentees Once the mentors have completed the training, the next step is to match them with mentees. The matching process should consider factors such as the age, gender, and interests of both the mentor and the mentee. My goal is to create a positive and meaningful relationship between the mentor and mentee. 6. Develop Programming After the matching process, the next step is to develop programming. The programming should be designed to support the goals and objectives of the mentorship program. The programming will include one-on-one mentoring, group mentoring, academic tutoring, or social and emotional learning activities. 7. Monitor and Evaluate the Program Monitoring and evaluating the program is essential to ensuring its success. The program should be regularly evaluated to determine its impact on the mentees. The evaluation could include collecting data on academic achievement, attendance rates, and social and emotional development. The feedback from the mentors and mentees should also be considered to improve the program. 8. Establish Partnerships Establishing partnerships with universities and businesses is essential to building a successful mentorship program. Partnerships could provide resources such as funding, volunteers, and space for programming. Partnerships could also help in recruiting mentors and mentees. 9. Celebrate Success Celebrating the success of the program is crucial in motivating mentors, mentees, and stakeholders. Celebrations could involve award ceremonies, public recognition, and testimonials from mentors and mentees. Celebrations could also help in attracting more volunteers and funding for the program. By following these steps, we can create a program that provides children with the guidance and support they need to succeed. With the right mentorship, these children can overcome their challenges and achieve their full potential.

As a senior at Mount Carmel Academy with a GPA of 3.6, I have been involved in numerous extracurricular activities, such as soccer and cheerleading. Although I stopped playing soccer when I was 14, I continued to participate in cheerleading since fifth grade, and this year I have the honor of serving as the team captain. Growing up, my father's success always inspired me. He achieved his dreams by working hard and thinking outside of the box. When he turned 40, he quit his job as vice president and started his own business. During the first two years, we lived off his savings, and it was tough, but he persevered, and his business eventually became a huge success. However, he always regretted not pursuing higher education, and he often said that if he had known basic business principles, scaling his business would have been much easier. My father's entrepreneurial journey and his constant pursuit of knowledge have motivated me to pursue a degree in business and entrepreneurship. I want to be like him and start my own business one day. I am fascinated by the idea of being able to take an idea and turn it into a profitable venture. I believe that obtaining a degree in business and entrepreneurship will provide me with the necessary tools to do so. I want to learn about marketing, finance, management, and strategy so that I can make informed decisions that will help my business succeed. I am confident that I can acquire these skills through a comprehensive business program that will teach me about the principles and practices of entrepreneurship. Furthermore, I am interested in learning about emerging technologies and how they can be integrated into business operations to increase efficiency and profitability. To prepare for my future in entrepreneurship, I have been reading business books, attending seminars, and participating in entrepreneurial events. I have also been researching successful entrepreneurs and their stories to gain insights into their strategies and practices. I have come to understand that entrepreneurship is not just about starting a business; it is about creating value, taking calculated risks, and persevering through challenges. In conclusion, I am excited to pursue a degree in business and entrepreneurship because it aligns with my aspirations to start my own business. I am passionate about learning about marketing, finance, management, and strategy and applying that knowledge to create a successful business venture. My father's journey has inspired me to pursue this path, and I am confident that I have the drive, passion, and dedication required to succeed in this field.
