As a child, I dreamt of becoming a superhero. Having three older brothers, Spiderman towels, and Batman costumes surrounded my life. Any hope I had of being a superhero was put to the test when my mother was scared about a big surgery. My mom was diagnosed with Hypoparathyroidism a few years ago. This past October she underwent surgery to remove one of her parathyroids. She was very nervous because the surgery could affect her vocal cords. I made a deal with her that if she went through with the surgery, I would run a mile for every year she was diagnosed. She accepted and proceeded with the surgery. Although running a 5k was in no way equal to what my mom experiencing, it helped her realize that she wasn’t alone and had someone to walk through the experience with her.
But, I knew that “superhero” does not count as a profession, but rather a hobby. Thus in my new job search, I sought a profession where I could not only help people but make them smile too. One fateful Monday evening, while having dinner with my cousin, I heard about her experience as a Physician Assistant. She explained how working as a nurse before going to PA school had allowed her to help hundreds of people. From that moment on, I made up my mind.
As a people person, I thrive in social settings, meaning I enjoy interacting with others. But I also need a certain amount of spontaneity and activeness in my daily life. Becoming a nursing major means I could work in the fast-paced and intense life a hospital provides. Being a nurse would allow me to have a very active job, while also getting the social interactions I craved.
Nursing is the best major for me because I am deeply fascinated by science classes and hands-on learning. Biology and anatomy greatly intrigue me because it explains the unnoticed functions our bodies perform all the time to keep us alive. Moreover, as a strong visual learner, the ability to recreate and practice those biological features and cycles is particularly intriguing to me. Another key feature I am intrigued by in a nursing major is the clinical experience students receive. The clinical experience will allow me to put what I have learned into action and get some professional practice before I graduate.
I know that I can’t save the world by myself. But by making one person’s day a little better, I can change one life. In my opinion, the most important aspect of being a nurse is helping someone get through the hard days they can’t get through alone. Being a nurse allows me to connect with my patients and helps them feel better. Although it is not jumping across buildings, or flying through the sky, being a nursing major will allow me to be a superhero in my unique way, helping as many people as possible.
