My dad is a marine veteran. He served in Iran, Iraq, and Japan. When I was born, he was stationed in Japan and my mom, and I lived in California. He ended up getting out sometime after my little brother’s birth. After he got out, he went to school for pharmaceutical technology and business administration, and later opened a business with my mom. I aspire to be like both of my parents in some way form or fashion. My dad is my rock and I will always strive to make him proud. Also props to my mom who is my role model and who I aspire to be like.
I am currently majoring in biology/biochemistry intending to be an anesthesiologist because, in my way, I wanted to try and follow in his footsteps in the medical field. As his oldest child and his only girl I want him to see how much he’s impacted my life. I want to be able for him to not stress and to know he raised me well. My dad taught me so much growing up. Although I’m a girl he still showed me how to do “manly” tasks. He taught me to fish, change oil, he even taught me how to fight. In choosing my major and career path I wanted to do something where I knew I could make a difference. In making that difference I will be able to not only help my dad but veterans across the United States and hopefully across the world.
My dad is my hero and just as he helps me, I want to be able to help him. He suffers from PTSD or Post Traumatic stress disorder, and it really takes its toll on him. I want to be able to study the disorder so I can find a way to help relieve him of the stress, anxiety and pressure it puts on him. I know it may be a long shot and that it could potentially take me years, but I want to be able to help those who fight for the freedom of their country and its people. I want to be able to develop a medication to help stop or even prevent PTSD. If we were able to help out our veterans, they would be able to feel like themselves again and they would be able to live without the worry of reliving their past traumas.
