Sandy Jenkins Excellence in Early Childhood Education Scholarship
I am passionate about early childhood education because I have always loved playing the teacher as a kid. I like to teach what I know to others who will have to experience the same life situations. I started out not knowing what grade I want to teach but now that I have experience at a daycare I feel like third grade would be best for me. I am in the teaching program at Jacksonville State University. I am doing my first teaching block out of four and I absolutely love it. We have practicum this semester and I can’t wait. I have cousins that are way younger than me and I always love helping them with homework and playing with them. When my Aunt and Uncle go out I sometimes babysit and I love the joy they bring me when I am with them. I am currently working at a daycare and I absolutely love taking care of the kids. I usually have four year olds but I also have the younger and older ones as well. I was inspired to be a teacher by one of my old teachers from Henagar. I attended Henagar from Kindergarten to the eight grade and graduated from there as well. I then went to Sylvania High School for my ninth to senior year and graduated from there also. I feel that I should receive this scholarship because I will do my best and work my hardest to make sure that the students I teach are in a safe and fun environment where they will enjoy learning. I was taught last semester that creating relationships in the teaching field is the most important aspect as a teacher. Creating those relationships gain the students trust, as well as your coworkers trust. Creating and maintaining a safe environment is important to me because I want my students to feel safe and loved so they can go on about their day learning without having to worry about problems. I want the students’ parents to want to leave their child with me and I want them to trust me to teach them everything I know. I want to be a role model to my students to where they can say Mrs. Sommer was the best teacher. I want to create those relationships to where the students come back after they graduate and visit me because they miss my class and being able to be themselves. I will never put a child down nor will I make any of them feel unsafe. I want to pursue my career in Early Childhood Education until the day I have to retire. Early Childhood Education is the career I want to live my life in.
