So You Want to Be a Mental Health Professional Scholarship
In my sophomore year of high school, I was outed by someone I trusted. Overnight, I went from having control of my narrative and sexuality to having my perception be in the hands of other people. I had no one to help me navigate through the chaos of confusion and pain. It felt like I was thrown into the cockpit of an airplane during a violent storm with no air traffic control to guide me. In my junior year of high school, I wanted to create this space I was deprived of. I started my high school’s Gender-Sexuality Alliance. While the work I did was satisfying and made an impact, the bureaucracy of starting an organization was something that was taxing. Much of my job was creating guidelines and filing paperwork with my school, preventing me from making the space I desperately needed.
I had a second opportunity to continue this passion for creating spaces for marginalized communities when I moved to New York to attend New York University in 2021. I joined NYU Steinhardt’s Undergraduate Student Government, allowing me to work on projects that would better the student body without red tape holding me back. Whether it was putting together a fundraiser for Ukraine or working with the deans to create community integration projects, I learned that being on the field engaged with hands-on projects that got me in the community was what I needed. Whether it is social work, journalism, or another field, my volunteer work has taught me to strive for results. Theorizing and academia can only go as far as their presence in the community. I want to pursue a path of bringing communities together because this is how we solve problems. Without this communication, ideas stay ideas and never become more.
Entering my senior year at NYU, I take this message to heart. When I entered the school, I wanted to be a teacher. Now, I want to delve into social work and policy. I want to use my education in psychology to advocate for those who are marginalized. In particular, I want to explore working with marginalized youth within a social work setting. To be able to do this it will take a significant amount of time and money. I intend to continue after graduation by pursuing a PhD in psychology and social intervention. This degree would equip me to help individuals on a clinical level and provide the skills I need to research improving conditions in the communities around me. This scholarship would greatly help me pursue this advocacy dream as it would equip me with the monetary resources I need to thrive and continue my education without sacrificing my basic needs. I am a low-income student who relies heavily on Medicaid and SNAP. Having the opportunity to receive this scholarship would help me and ensure those less fortunate receive the help they need in the future. I plan to use this scholarship to further my education and continue my work in the community through student government and volunteering in the larger NYC community.

As a college student passionate about mental health, I am committed to making mental health care affordable and accessible to all. Drawing from my experiences in applied psychology, public policy, and social work, I would advocate for the expansion of teletherapy and remote mental health services. This would enable individuals in remote or underserved areas to receive quality treatment from their homes.
Additionally, I would work to remove the subjective criterion of "medical necessity" imposed by private insurance organizations for mental health care. By pushing for legislation that provides more in-network treatment options, financial barriers can be reduced, making mental health care more attainable.
Destigmatizing mental illness is another priority. I would champion comprehensive mental health education in schools and workplaces, promoting open conversations about mental well-being. By creating supportive environments, individuals will be encouraged to seek help proactively.
Given my personal experiences, I aim to share my story and connect with others, inspiring resilience and hope. Through a dual major in applied psychology and public policy with a social work minor, I am determined to promote legislative changes and discussions for affordable and accessible mental health care. As I reflect on my personal experiences and the various roles I have taken on, it becomes evident that embodying selflessness has been a fundamental value in my life. Through acts of compassion and extending a helping hand, I have strived to prioritize the needs of others above my own. Allow me to share some specific examples where I have demonstrated selflessness and provided assistance to those in need.
During my time as a seasonal tutor with America Reads, I had the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of students in need. Coordinating with teachers, I presented lessons and activities to a class of over 35 students, utilizing Microsoft PowerPoint to enhance their learning experience. Additionally, I provided one-on-one or small group tutoring to students, ensuring they understood the content and helping them overcome academic challenges. By dedicating my time and expertise, I aimed to empower these students and help them realize their full potential.
Beyond my involvement in education, I have actively engaged in volunteer work and offered assistance to those in need. One notable example is my commitment to the LGBTQIA+ community through the establishment of our school's Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA). Being unexpectedly outed during my sophomore year, I faced significant personal challenges and a loss of control over my narrative and sexuality. Determined to create a safe and inclusive space, I gathered a group of friends and secured a sponsor to establish the GSA. Through this initiative, we provided support, resources, and a platform for LGBTQIA+ individuals and allies to gather and express themselves freely. By dedicating my time, energy, and resources, I aimed to empower others and help them regain control of their narratives.
Moreover, my commitment to selflessness extends to my involvement in global causes. As an analyst intern at European Values, I presented pitches, conducted research, and drafted articles on political and economic circumstances in Ukraine and Russia. Through my work, I aimed to contribute to informed discussions and shed light on important issues. Additionally, I have been actively involved in a nonprofit organization that supports education in underprivileged communities worldwide. Through fundraising efforts and awareness campaigns, we provide educational resources, scholarships, and mentoring programs to children in need. By contributing to these initiatives, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of education and the impact it can have on the lives of individuals and communities.
My experiences have allowed me to develop leadership skills and deepen my commitment to selflessness. Whether it is supporting students in their educational journeys, providing assistance to the LGBTQIA+ community, or contributing to global causes, I strive to prioritize the needs of others above my own. Through various roles, such as serving as a vice president of the Steinhardt Student Government E-Board and working as a peer mentor, I have coordinated meetings, organized events, and provided resources to help others thrive.
In conclusion, embodying selflessness has been a guiding principle in my journey. Through my involvement in education, the establishment of the GSA, volunteer work, and various leadership roles, I have demonstrated my commitment to helping others. Moving forward, I am dedicated to continuing my path of selflessness, seizing opportunities to make a difference, and fostering a more compassionate and inclusive society. By embodying selflessness, I hope to inspire others to join me in creating a world where acts of kindness and support are valued and celebrated.

During my sophomore year of high school, I encountered a profound personal challenge that significantly shaped my journey. I was unexpectedly outed, an experience that stripped away my agency and control over my own narrative and sexuality. Being the first gay person in my family and community, this revelation left me feeling invisible and dismissed.
This unexpected outing shattered the carefully constructed walls I had built around my identity. It forced me to confront the reality of being seen in a way I wasn't prepared for. The loss of control over my personal narrative was deeply unsettling, as it exposed me to the judgments and biases of those around me. I grappled with a mix of emotions—fear, confusion, and a profound sense of vulnerability.
In the aftermath of being outed, I experienced a rollercoaster of emotions and struggled to find my footing. But within that struggle, I discovered resilience and a determination to reclaim my identity on my own terms. It was during this period that I recognized the power of support and community. Through connecting with LGBTQIA+ organizations, I found solace and a sense of belonging. These spaces provided me with the support and understanding that I longed for, allowing me to embrace my true self and begin the process of healing.
This personal journey not only shaped my understanding of LGBTQIA+ experiences but also deepened my empathy for others facing similar challenges. I became acutely aware of the importance of creating safe and inclusive spaces where individuals can freely express their identities without fear of judgment or rejection. This realization sparked my passion for advocacy and drove me to take action.
Founding our school's Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) became a pivotal moment in my journey. Together with a group of friends and our science teacher as the sponsor, we established a platform where LGBTQIA+ individuals and allies could gather, share resources, and find support. Witnessing the transformative power of advocacy, empathy, and inclusivity within the GSA further solidified my commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of others.
My personal struggles with mental health, including autism, PTSD, anxiety, ADHD, and depression, further influenced my journey. These challenges heightened my awareness of the intersectionality between mental health and LGBTQIA+ experiences. They reinforced the urgent need for comprehensive support systems and resources that address the unique struggles faced by individuals within this community.
In conclusion, the unexpected outing I faced during my sophomore year brought both immense challenges and invaluable lessons. It compelled me to confront my identity, embrace my true self, and advocate for others. This experience deepened my understanding of the LGBTQIA+ community, fueled my dedication to fostering inclusivity, and heightened my commitment to mental health advocacy. Moving forward, I am resolute in my mission to create a world where individuals can freely express their identities, where their voices are heard, and where no one feels invisible or dismissed. Through empathy, understanding, and support, we can build a society that celebrates diversity and empowers everyone to thrive.

Why is it important to help others? This question lies at the core of my values and beliefs, shaping my perspective on the world and guiding my actions. Throughout my life, I have witnessed the transformative power of helping others, and I firmly believe that it is not only an ethical imperative but also a source of personal fulfillment and collective progress.
First and foremost, helping others is important because it cultivates empathy and compassion. When we extend a helping hand to those in need, we open ourselves up to their experiences, challenges, and triumphs. By empathizing with others, we develop a deeper understanding of their perspectives and gain insight into the diverse realities that exist beyond our own. This heightened sense of empathy fosters compassion, creating a more inclusive and caring society.
Moreover, helping others is an effective way to address social inequality and injustice. In a world marked by disparities and systemic barriers, reaching out to those who are marginalized or disadvantaged can bring about positive change. By providing support, resources, and opportunities, we can empower individuals and communities to overcome obstacles and fulfill their potential. This can break the cycle of poverty, discrimination, and inequality, creating a more equitable society where everyone has a chance to thrive.
Additionally, helping others promotes social cohesion and strengthens the bonds within our communities. When we come together to support and uplift one another, we build a sense of unity and solidarity. Acts of kindness and generosity create ripple effects, inspiring others to do the same. By fostering a culture of helping, we foster a spirit of cooperation and collaboration, leading to stronger and more resilient communities.
Helping others is not only beneficial to those receiving assistance but also to the helpers themselves. It provides a sense of purpose, fulfillment, and personal growth. Through volunteering, community service, or simply lending a helping hand, we gain a deeper understanding of our own capabilities, strengths, and values. We develop skills such as empathy, active listening, and problem-solving, which are essential for personal and professional growth. Additionally, the joy and satisfaction derived from making a positive impact on someone else's life are immeasurable.
Furthermore, helping others contributes to the well-being and happiness of society as a whole. Numerous studies have shown that acts of kindness and altruism have positive effects on mental health and overall life satisfaction. By prioritizing the well-being of others, we create a more caring and supportive environment where individuals can thrive. This, in turn, fosters a sense of interconnectedness and belonging, enhancing the overall quality of life for everyone.
In conclusion, helping others is of paramount importance for several reasons. It promotes empathy, compassion, and understanding, addressing social inequality and injustice, fostering social cohesion, and strengthening communities. It brings personal fulfillment and growth to those who engage in acts of kindness, and it contributes to the well-being and happiness of society as a whole. As I reflect on my own experiences and values, I am deeply committed to helping others and making a positive difference in the world. By extending a helping hand, we can create a more compassionate, inclusive, and harmonious society, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

The DRIVEN scholarship's mission to create equal opportunities for deserving students, regardless of their background, geographic location, sexual orientation, or socio-economic status deeply resonates with my own journey. Throughout my educational path, I have encountered obstacles that have required me to demonstrate determination, respect, innovation, versatility, equality, and a nurturing spirit. These experiences have shaped my commitment to making a lasting impact in the lives of others.
During my high school years, I aspired to become my school's student body president. Although I faced disappointment when a friend won the election, this setback taught me a valuable lesson about determination. I redirected my efforts towards addressing mental health and communication issues within the school community. By designing a new system for students to reach guidance counselors and creating a newsletter to foster community engagement, I discovered the power of innovative solutions in making a lasting impact.
Founding our school's Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) exemplified my respect for inclusivity and equality. Overcoming initial challenges in establishing an efficient club structure, I fostered growth and reached out to students through effective communication. By redefining our purpose and adopting a council-like structure, the GSA flourished, promoting a safe and accepting atmosphere for all students. Through this experience, I demonstrated both respect for diverse identities and the importance of nurturing an inclusive community.
Transitioning from high school to college, I embraced versatility in overcoming obstacles. Planning a Ukrainian fundraising event presented unexpected challenges in team coordination. Recognizing the importance of understanding each teammate's skills and interests, I restructured the tasks accordingly. This innovation allowed us to secure support from a local bakery, gain widespread backing from NYU, and successfully execute the event. The experience taught me the value of adaptability and versatility in achieving goals.
Moreover, I faced a setback in my pursuit of higher education when initially denied clearance for a required year of field experience. Instead of succumbing to frustration, I approached the situation with respect and determination. Seeking clarification through open communication with the field service office, I advocated for myself and engaged in a departmental appeal meeting. This experience taught me the importance of respectful advocacy while recognizing areas for personal growth.
Looking ahead, I am committed to making an impact by leveraging my education. Equipped with knowledge and skills, I plan to advocate for equality and social justice. Whether through raising awareness about marginalized communities, promoting inclusive policies, or actively participating in initiatives that foster equal opportunities, I will strive to create a more equitable society. With a focus on creating equal opportunities and nurturing inclusivity, I am dedicated to making a lasting impact in the lives of others and contributing to a more just and equitable society.
Walking In Authority International Ministry Scholarship
In my sophomore year of high school, I found myself thrust into a disorienting whirlwind when I was outed by someone I trusted. Suddenly, the control over my personal narrative and sexuality slipped from my grasp, leaving me vulnerable to the perception of others. I became the first openly gay person in a community and family where queer individuals were virtually unheard of. It felt as though my existence was being denied, as if everyone was pretending that gay people didn't exist, and by extension, like I didn't exist. In the chaos and pain that ensued, I lacked guidance and support to navigate this turbulent journey. It felt as if I had been unceremoniously placed in the cockpit of an airplane during a violent storm, without air traffic control to guide me. I barely made it out alive. This personal journey has become the driving force behind my desire to get involved in my community.
My motivation to learn about Identity, Diversity, and Belonging Education (IDBE) stems from a deep-rooted conviction that no one else should have to endure what I experienced. By acquiring knowledge and understanding in IDBE, I aim to educate others within my community, broadening their perspectives and cultivating empathy. The process of learning about identities different from our own fosters open-mindedness, empathy, and ultimately, happiness. While complete comprehension may not always be attainable, acknowledging and embracing the existence of diverse identities serves as a vital starting point. Although my hometown predominantly holds homogenous views, I recognize that the world at large is characterized by diversity. Since relocating to the vibrant mosaic of cultures and ideas in New York City, my mission has been to engage with the views and experiences around me, and create safe spaces where all identities and ideas can thrive. Pursuing an education in IDBE empowers me to make these spaces the very best they can be.
I have actively worked towards influencing change in my community through various endeavors. One impactful initiative took shape last year, shortly after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In response, I organized a fundraising bake sale with the goal of supporting humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. By sourcing baked goods from local Ukrainian bakeries, we not only raised approximately $500 for the nonprofit organization Razom for Ukraine but also spread awareness about these culturally significant establishments to the hundreds of thousands of NYU students. This experience reinforced the understanding that public service extends beyond distant lands. It illuminated the significance of providing assistance to our neighbors and family members when they need it most. Little Ukraine, a neighborhood located a stone's throw away from NYU, became a testament to the fact that impactful change begins with supporting our immediate community.
In conclusion, my inspiration to get involved in my community emerges from the profound journey I undertook after being outed in high school. By immersing myself in IDBE, I strive to cultivate empathy, foster connection, and create inclusive environments where all individuals can thrive. Through initiatives like the fundraising bake sale, I have actively worked to influence change within my community by promoting understanding, supporting local establishments, and spreading awareness. As I continue to pursue my education and engage with diverse perspectives, I am committed to making a lasting impact by nurturing a community that celebrates and respects all identities and ideas.

Growing up, my family believed that mental health was an exaggerated topic used to justify the misdeeds of others. However, struggling with depression, ADHD, and anxiety, I understood exactly how significant providing assistance and treatment is for those who struggle with mental disorders. This belief has led me on my path of advocacy for mental health awareness. Whether it was providing LGBTQ students like myself a safe space by founding a sexuality-gender alliance at my high school or simply joining inclusion and diversity committees, I strive to make sure that mental health receives the attention it deserves and ensures my peers who struggle are heard and respected.
For this reason, my primary goal in attending NYU is to continue my passion for giving back to my community. Through the social work, public policy, and psychology programs I am taking, I am learning the skills I need to help marginalized communities and advocate for equity and inclusion. However, my purpose goes beyond the classroom. I have taken a variety of opportunities since freshman year to become more involved within NYU and my community as a whole. In this last year alone, I became a leading member of Steinhardt’s undergraduate student government, serving as the diversity, equity, and inclusion committee chair as well as a designated representative of Steinhardt for the all-university government. These experiences have allowed me to speak up for those who are often overlooked and push for those around me to utilize their privilege to empower those around them.
Working as an advocate in the mental health field has ultimately led me to declare a dual major in applied psychology and public policy with a minor in social work. I believe there remains significant progress to be made to provide mental health care across the nation as well as reduce the stigma surrounding treatment. I believe by combining these three fields, I feel that I will be the best equipped to enter a career of promoting more discussion around mental health and ensuring those struggling have their place at the table when it comes to determining the implications of societal expectations and legislation on their care.
