Dear Scholarship Donors, My name is Sable Davis, and I'm a Marine Corps veteran, small business owner, volunteer, and college student studying American Sign Language Interpreter and Deaf Studies and Early Education My life goals are to advocate for the Deaf community, support their inclusion in society, and help bridge the communication gap between the hearing and Deaf worlds. I'm passionate about this field because of my older brother, who is Deaf, and my desire to give back to the community that has been so important to me. I'm applying for scholarships because I'm determined to achieve my goals, but I face many financial challenges as a student and small business owner. Scholarships would help me pay for tuition, books, and other expenses, and allow me to focus on my studies and my mission to help the Deaf community. I'm a great candidate for scholarships because of my unique blend of experiences, skills, and passions. As a Marine Corps veteran, I have the discipline and determination to succeed in challenging environments. Throughout my journey, I've come to realize that communication is not just about words—it's about connection, understanding, and empowerment. As a Marine Corps veteran, I've experienced firsthand the power of effective communication in high-stakes situations. However, I've also witnessed the profound impact of communication barriers on individuals and communities, particularly within the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. Teaching American Sign Language (ASL) is not merely a career choice for me; it is a passion rooted in a desire to bridge divides and facilitate meaningful connections. ASL is more than just a language; it is a gateway to culture, identity, and community. By teaching ASL, I aim to empower individuals to express themselves fully, connect with others authentically, and participate fully in society.       In my pursuit of higher education, I've encountered numerous obstacles, each presenting a unique challenge that demanded resilience and determination. As a thirty-three-year-old Marine Corps veteran, returning to school was a decision fueled by a deep desire to provide a better life not just for myself, but also for my three younger siblings. The path I embarked upon was not an easy one, but I refused to let the hurdles impede my progress. One of the significant obstacles I faced was the transition from a structured military environment to the academic realm. The rigidity and discipline that were ingrained in me during my years of service needed to be adapted to the more flexible and independent nature of higher education. It took time and effort to acclimate to the new learning environment, but with steadfast determination, I gradually found my footing. Financial burdens were another hurdle that threatened to hinder my pursuit of knowledge. As the sole provider for my siblings, I had to juggle work and studies, often sacrificing sleep and personal time to make ends meet. The relentless balancing act between earning a living and investing in my education demanded perseverance and a strong sense of purpose. Through various scholarships, grants, and the support of organizations assisting veterans, I was able to alleviate some of the financial strain and maintain focus on my studies. However, I realized that my life experiences as a Marine Corps veteran, my determination, and my unwavering commitment to creating a better future for my siblings outweighed any doubts. Having overcome these obstacles and nearing the completion of my higher education, I now stand at the precipice of a new chapter in my life. My deployments to Okinawa, Japan, and the Middle East taught me invaluable lessons about teamwork, resilience, and the importance of helping others. Now, as a student pursuing a degree in American Sign Language Interpreter and Deaf Studies, I have a new opportunity to make a difference in the world. My older brother is Deaf, and growing up with him has given me a deep love and respect for the Deaf community.
