“Shreen, bring my medication please?” he sighed on the makeshift bed downstairs.
My father's chronic pain was caused by a distracted driver in a car accident. At the time, Georgia hadn't passed the "Hands-Free Georgia Act," which would deter drivers from using their phones while driving. This lack of discussion in my community about the dangers of handling a vehicle while texting led me to create conversations about traffic safety as SADD’s National President, aiming to limit accidents like my father’s and advocate for communities like mine.
To promote discourse, I partnered with national-level nonprofits such as the National Road and Safety Foundation, insurance companies, media outlets, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the US Department of Transportation to disseminate resources to low-income, rural neighborhoods. My booklets and programming reached over 100,000 people, sparking conversations about health and safety between passengers and drivers.
Furthermore, I hosted discussions that helped connect youth and allies from across all 50 states to come together to voice their experiences with traffic safety. From these discussions, people from various socioeconomic backgrounds and ethnic groups found several ways to create discourse about solutions to the ever-growing problem of mobility crashes and implement real-world solutions.
In college, I plan to pursue a degree in Business Economics and Public Policy to understand how organizations in both the public and private sectors interact with current laws. As a public policy analyst, I aim to raise awareness around social issues such as environmental and social sustainability, drug use prevention, and other issues affecting people of all ages.
Unfortunately, I have experienced multiple infections in recent years, leading me to take medications with side effects like severe nausea and headaches. Massive allergy attacks also caused rashes and scarring on my back, requiring several hours at the doctor's office and causing me to miss school. These health issues prevented me from working traditional teenage jobs because I never knew when I might have to call out sick. The scholarship will allow me to prioritize my education despite my health issues. By engaging with coursework and professors, I hope to learn from professionals within the space without monetary concerns. Additionally, I hope to give back to my community by encouraging young people to speak up on issues they care about and learn from stories of those directly affected, like my father and myself.
