Your Health Journey Scholarship
In high school, I was in boarding school in Jerusalem, Israel, and there I developed some personal wellness habits to take care of myself that I plan on continuing in college too.
So let me walk you through a day in my life:
I became a morning person. Sleeping over eight hours a night is crucial for a teenage student studying stem subjects.
Therefore I was always early to go to bed and the first to jump out of bed in the morning and make my bed straight away. Then I would wake up refreshed and ready for my yoga practice. Practicing yoga benefits me in many ways such as keeping me focused, calm, and flexible, and gives me a better connection to my soul. It is a time I reserve for myself and is very important to me. Since I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis managing and dealing with stress is crucial for my health. To stay in remission and have the least amount of symptoms.
In the mornings I wake up starving so having a big and nutritious breakfast is always a must for me to keep me full and help me be energized throughout the day.
Writing a to-do list in the morning is something I recommend to everyone. It keeps me focused on my goals for the day and my head runs around a little slower.
After all that I'm ready to go to class and give it my whole attention with a clear mind.
For lunch, I would walk with my friends to the cafeteria and we would sit together and chat for the whole break.
After lunch, we would head back for a few more hours of class and finish between 1:00 pm- 7:00 pm depending on the day.
In between classes or when the school day is over I bead jewelry. A couple of years ago my grandma taught me how and that is something I do to calm me the result is gorgeous.
Sometimes I will add in another workout or go out with friends, but not before I finish my homework!
Dinner was held in the cafeteria too. I didn't go out to save money.
Coming back to my room and seeing my made bed soothed me after a long day.
Before getting into bed I had already picked out the outfit for the next day, prepared my books in my rucksack, and organized the room a bit. At around 10:00 pm I was ready to read a few chapters of a book before sleeping.
Maintaining my personal wellness in these ways as a student keeps me healthy, and happy and gives me a feeling of fulfillment.
Thank you for giving me this opportunity to share what I do for my wellness and for giving me a chance not to worry about money in college.

Ever since I was a kid I was fascinated by the idea of living organisms and how they work. It started when my dad first got me a subscription to national geographic for Kids. I used to devour every word that was in there. After that, I was upgraded to actual science books also by national geographic. That is also the reason why I decided to go to boarding school for high school that had a special program in biotechnology and biology. We researched metastatic melanoma skin cancer and how antibody targeting can be a cure another time when I fell even deeper in love with biology.
Therefore the potential careers that I am exploring are mainly related to biology. Such as biotechnology, biomedical, marine biologist, engineering, or medicine acquire a Ph.D. in a bio-related subject. My biotechnology teacher was an angel as she recognized the potential I have and pushed me even further. She was always there for all the students and motivated us constantly. She also talked to us about our futures in biology thus me mentioning those specific careers above.
After graduating high school ironically I wasn't sure what to major in because I felt disconnected from where I was. I moved halfway across the world leaving my cherished family and friends behind to pursue a career in a subject that I love. (If that ain't a true love story I don't know what is). I believe that any of the careers I mentioned will bring me fulfillment because it is a lifelong dream of mine to study and do research on living organisms.
I feel that the more research we do the more and better cures for diseases we can discover. We can find ways to end world hunger which is still a big issue. We can clean our oceans of plastic and toxic waste. We can produce healthier and higher quality foods so people won't get sick from consuming poisons. We can minimize the number of unnecessary medications people take and surgeries they have and find better medical alternatives. From personal experience, I know that there isn't enough of any of that.
My mom and I suffer from ulcerative colitis. Out of the dozens of doctors, we've been to none could tell us whether the disease is genetic or not how severely I have it, or which medication should help the most with the least amount of side effects. One of my priorities in research will be inflammatory bowel diseases. In my opinion, there isn't enough research in this field. I would like to thank you for this opportunity to be a candidate for your scholarship. I hope you found my essay informative and that you have gotten to know me a little better.

Headbang For Science
My name, Shoshana means rose which is a symbol of beauty and growth also influencing my passion for music. When my family and I once went to the Museum of pop culture in Seattle and recorded a disc we had to name our band "Guns N Shoshanas".
To this day I have kept all five of the tickets they printed out for us from twelve years ago to keep me motivated and strive toward my goals in life.
Ever since I was a kid I was fascinated by the idea of living organisms and how they work. therefore I have chosen biology as my college major.
I will be a freshman at Edmonds College and I plan to transfer to the University of Washington after two years. After that, I want to either go to medical school or into biotechnology building on the experience from high school with research.
I've sacrificed a lot to get where I am now. in high school, I studied 24/7 to get good grades. I needed to because Hebrew wasn't my first language. I have left all my family and friends in Israel and moved to Washington to be able to go to college here and find success in my passion which is biology.
Starting in community college is part of my plan for saving money while pursuing a scientific degree. I am currently working as a waitress right now and plan on paying with everything I earn. I have also applied for financial aid.
I was first introduced to metal by my father. I am a second generation metalhead. I saw the video for Metallica’s “One” and was blown away. I had never seen anything like it. The power, the speed, the precision, and the overall heaviness were incredible. It was brutal. (Although that may be relative as I later found out when I encountered death metal). As I got more and more into Metallica, I also got interested in the rest of the Big Four (Anthrax, Megadeth, and Slayer). I was intrigued by the subjects these bands wrote about and subsequently learned about many interesting topics I never would have discovered otherwise.
Despite the perception that metalheads are illiterate simpletons I found this to not be true (for the most part.) Metalheads also have a reputation for being chest-beating macho males who do not treat women well. I also found this to not be true. Despite metal being an overwhelmingly male subculture, I have found only respect and support as a female metalhead in this sausage fest and gotten only eye-rolls and weird looks when I’ve told normies that I’m a metalhead. Although according to many people I may have missed the golden years of metal since I never saw Cliff play (or even Jason) and did not merit to see the classic lineups of Sepultura or Megadeth or Slayer and sadly not even Pantera, I do believe that metal has a future that will be fascinating, and I look forward to it with anticipation. Over the years metal has been a catharsis for me. As l experienced life’s ups and downs, emotions such as anger, frustration, depression, hopefulness, and helplessness, metal has always been there to help me get grounded.
