Sandy Jenkins Excellence in Early Childhood Education Scholarship
Magic Johnson, former basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers, once said, “All kids need is a little help, a little hope, and someone who believes in them”. I believe this quote perfectly sums up what it means to be a teacher. Education is the tool we use to teach children what they need to know to succeed in school. Educating children not only secures their personal life, but also contributes to the development of a more reliable nation. However, what most children need to succeed is a little help, a little hope, and someone who believes in them.
As a teacher, I hope to not only educate the future minds of America, but also help children gain the wisdom, knowledge, and power associated with someone who has the confidence to make the world a better place. Not all children have the perfect home life, one where they are loved and supported the way children should be. My passion is educating, but I hope to be the kind of teacher my students remember as the one that believed in them when no one else would. The teacher that showed them love, even if they weren’t the smartest or most well-behaved student. I want to be the teacher that students go to for advice, the one they feel comfortable enough with to admit they need help.
I have been a teacher now for a year and a half. I absolutely loved getting to know the personalities of my students and seeing the light in their eyes when they learn something new. With the help of this scholarship, I will be able to earn my Master’s in Early Childhood Education so that I can continue my passion. I will be the teacher that offers a child a little help, a little hope, and be the person that believes in them.
