Lauren Newmark Uterine Fibroid Research Scholarship
As a nurse practitioner, I have had the privilege of caring for women dealing with uterine fibroids regularly. Although uterine fibroids are an issue affecting women globally, African American women are disproportionately affected compared to their white counterparts, being two to three times more prone to developing them. This imbalance goes beyond the frequency of occurrence; minority women also tend to face symptoms and challenges like delayed diagnoses and restricted access to effective treatments. In my time assisting minority women, I've come to grasp the connection between fibroids and systemic healthcare disparities. I've cared for women— those of Black and Latina descent—who not only bear the physical burden of fibroids but also face emotional and mental challenges resulting from financial struggles, reproductive issues, and biases within the healthcare system that can impede or delay their care. I have noticed that several women of all backgrounds whom I have cared for have experienced being disregarded by healthcare professionals or advised to simply endure their pain, resulting in them enduring their suffering without voicing it out loud. One particular instance that really struck me was when I encountered a woman who had been struggling with heavy menstrual bleeding and constant fatigue for an extended period of time but had been disregarded by her past healthcare providers. Her condition was critical enough to necessitate immediate care. In addition to the challenges she faced and the toll it took on her body, she also endured anxiety and depression worsened by the lack of support and empathy from her medical team. This encounter strengthened my commitment to not just focus on the implications of fibroids but also one's mental health. In my journey towards becoming a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I am deeply committed to incorporating health support into the care of women dealing with fibroids. Uterine fibroids can have impacts when not adequately addressed, including feelings of anxiety and depression. Obstacles within the healthcare system often exacerbate these challenges. I've come to understand the significance of caring for individuals. Tending to both their physical and mental well-being is crucial to me. I am dedicated to not only treating the symptoms of fibroids but also addressing the emotional and psychological needs of women grappling with this condition. Studies reveal that women from marginalized communities are often hesitant to seek health support due to stigmas and limited access to services; however, they are more prone to enduring significant psychological distress stemming from chronic conditions such as fibroids. By merging my knowledge of women's health with my background in psychiatry, I am driven to provide a method for fibroid treatment that values and nurtures women's emotional wellness as much as their physical well-being. My interest lies in pushing forward the study of fibroids, with a focus on uncovering the reasons behind their impact on minority women compared to others in society. I aim to play a role in investigations that delve into the makeup and societal influences contributing to this inequality. This scholarship resonates with my commitment to enhancing care for marginalized women dealing with fibroids who lack support and resources like Lauren did in her journey toward healing from this condition. Through my pursuits, I aspire to merge clinical investigations with empathetic psychological support to guarantee that all women, equally, regardless of their background or financial standing, receive inclusive and efficient fibroid treatment options. In my vision, the future of care is one that not only improves outcomes but also considers the diverse needs of women from minority backgrounds in terms of both physical and mental well-being aspects in mind as well.
Debra S. Jackson New Horizons Scholarship
Embarking on a doctorate degree in psychiatric nursing in my 40s, amidst the dual demands of a nursing career and motherhood to three children, encapsulates a journey shaped by deep commitment and a vision to bridge mental health care disparities. This path, driven by firsthand experiences in shortstaffed nursing units, reflects a profound dedication to personal growth, resilience, and a desire to serve the underserved with compassion and empathy. Working under the pressures of shortstaffing in nursing not only honed my skills but also deepened my empathy, highlighting the stark realities of healthcare disparities, especially in mental health. These challenges laid the foundation for my pursuit of advanced education, aiming to address the critical need for specialized psychiatric care that is accessible and equitable, particularly for indigenous communities and low-income individuals. Choosing to specialize as a psychiatric nurse practitioner is a testament to my commitment to combating the mental health crisis. It's a commitment rooted in the belief that everyone deserves quality, culturally sensitive psychiatric care, and in my aspiration to effect systemic changes to enhance mental health services' accessibility and quality. This decision is a reflection of my personal values around equity and advocacy, driving me to assume a leadership role where I can foster substantial, positive change. Pursuing a doctorate at this stage is a bold declaration of the importance of lifelong learning and the significant role of experience in enriching academic endeavors. It exemplifies the balance between personal growth, familial responsibilities, and societal contributions, teaching resilience and the value of serving a cause greater than oneself. This journey is not just for personal advancement but a stepping stone towards creating a meaningful impact within the psychiatric community. My ultimate goal is to establish a nonprofit mental health clinic dedicated to serving indigenous populations and low-income individuals. This clinic aims to offer culturally sensitive, high-quality psychiatric care, addressing the glaring gaps in mental health services for these communities. By focusing on these underserved groups, the clinic will not only provide necessary care but also work towards reducing stigma and fostering a more inclusive environment for mental health support. The scholarship for which I am applying represents more than financial assistance; it is a vital support for my vision to make a tangible difference in mental health care accessibility and quality. It is an investment in a future where mental health services are equitable and inclusive, allowing me to concentrate on my studies and the development of the nonprofit clinic. This support brings me closer to realizing a project with the potential to transform lives and strengthen communities. As you can see, my journey from confronting the realities of short-staffed nursing units to aspiring for doctoral-level innovation in psychiatric care is a narrative of resilience, growth, and unwavering commitment to service. It illustrates the power of leveraging personal experiences and academic achievements to initiate change, embodying the holistic and compassionate spirit of nursing. I aim to extend that spirit further, creating a legacy of care and advocacy that resonates within and beyond the psychiatric community, transforming both lives and healthcare landscapes.

As a minority female dedicated to mental health advocacy, I am deeply honored to apply for the Charles Cheesman Student Debt Reduction Scholarship. Pursuing a Doctorate in Psychiatry has been both a passion and a calling, fueling my commitment to addressing the pervasive stigmas surrounding mental illness within minority communities. My journey began as a registered nurse, witnessing firsthand the disparities in mental healthcare accessibility and the detrimental effects of stigma on individuals seeking support. My educational journey has been driven by a passion to close this divide. My proudest accomplishments lie not just in academic achievements but in the lives I've touched and transformed. It would enable me to dedicate more of my resources towards continuing education, obtaining certifications, and undertaking initiatives that promote awareness of health in minority communities. The current mental health crisis is an urgent call to action, and it is one that I have wholeheartedly answered. As a minority female, I bring a unique set of experiences, perspectives, and motivations to the field of mental health. My personal experiences, cultural background, and deep empathy have inspired me to choose a career dedicated to addressing the mental health crisis. While the challenges are significant, they are outweighed by the opportunities for positive change. I am committed to advocating for equitable mental health care, breaking down barriers, and working toward a future where mental health is prioritized and destigmatized. As a minority female in this field, I aspire to be a catalyst for transformation, a voice for the voiceless, and a source of hope and healing for those who need it most. In the end, the battles we wage within ourselves are just as significant as those fought on distant battlefields. Cultural norms and expectations often play a role in how mental health is perceived within minority communities. Stigma may be compounded by cultural beliefs that encourage suppressing emotions or seeking help only within the community. Systemic inequalities, including racial disparities in healthcare and socioeconomic opportunities, contribute to the mental health crisis. Minority populations face a higher risk of experiencing adverse life events and trauma, which can trigger mental health issues. The mental health crisis is not a problem that can be solved in isolation. It requires a collective effort to transform the way society views and addresses mental health. My desire to be part of this transformative process, to advocate for systemic change, and to work toward a future where mental health is treated with the same urgency as physical health has been a driving force in my career choice. Mental health issues have, for far too long, been stigmatized and overlooked, relegated to the shadows of societal discourse. By choosing a career in mental health, I am embracing the battle within, determined to make a difference in the lives of individuals and communities, and to contribute to a world where mental health is. In a world grappling with the multifaceted mental health crisis, one might wonder why I, a minority female, have chosen to devote my career to addressing these pressing issues. My journey toward this career path has been profoundly shaped by personal experiences, cultural background, and a profound desire for positive change. My journey has also been guided by a profound sense of empathy and compassion for those who are struggling. Empathy allows me to connect with individuals on a deeply human level, fostering trust and understanding that are often essential in therapeutic relationships.

In the annals of human history, there have been countless battles waged on various fronts. Some of these battles have been fought on distant battlefields, while others have taken place within the confines of our own minds. In recent years, the battle against mental health issues has gained prominence, emerging as one of the most critical crises of our time. This essay delves into the current mental health crisis, exploring the factors contributing to its rise and discussing what has inspired me, as a minority female, to choose a career in this field. Before we explore the personal motivations that have driven my career choice, it is imperative to comprehend the nature and scale of the current mental health crisis. Mental health issues have, for far too long, been stigmatized and overlooked, relegated to the shadows of societal discourse. However, in recent years, a seismic shift has occurred as these issues have come to the forefront of public consciousness. The statistics surrounding mental health paint a grim picture. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression is now the leading cause of disability worldwide, affecting over 264 million people of all ages. This crisis extends to the United States, where nearly one in five adults, or 47.1 million individuals, experienced some form of mental illness in 2020. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this crisis, with lockdowns, economic hardships, and social isolation causing a surge in anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders. Stigma: Despite significant progress in recent years, the stigma surrounding mental health issues persists. Many individuals, especially in minority communities, continue to suffer in silence due to fear of judgment and discrimination. This stigma discourages seeking help, perpetuating the crisis. Lack of Access to Care: Access to mental health care remains a significant challenge for many, particularly minority populations. Socioeconomic disparities, inadequate insurance coverage, and the shortage of mental health professionals all create barriers to receiving timely and appropriate care. Cultural norms and expectations often play a role in how mental health is perceived within minority communities. Stigma may be compounded by cultural beliefs that encourage suppressing emotions or seeking help only within the community. Systemic Inequities: Systemic inequalities, including racial disparities in healthcare and socioeconomic opportunities, contribute to the mental health crisis. Minority populations face a higher risk of experiencing adverse life events and trauma, which can trigger mental health issues. In a world grappling with the multifaceted mental health crisis, one might wonder why I, a minority female, have chosen to devote my career to addressing these pressing issues. My journey toward this career path has been profoundly shaped by personal experiences, cultural background, and a profound desire for positive change. Like so many others, my life has been touched by mental health challenges. Witnessing loved ones struggle with anxiety, depression, and other disorders exposed me to the harsh realities of the mental health crisis. These experiences ignited a passion within me to alleviate the suffering of those facing similar battles. As a minority female, I am acutely aware of the unique challenges faced by individuals from diverse backgrounds. Minority communities often encounter cultural barriers that hinder access to mental health care, making it essential to have culturally competent professionals who can bridge these gaps. My own experiences within a minority community have instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility to advocate for equitable mental health care. My journey has also been guided by a profound sense of empathy and compassion for those who are struggling. Empathy allows me to connect with individuals on a deeply human level, fostering trust and understanding that are often essential in therapeutic relationships. In a field where minority representation is often lacking, I see the importance of diversifying the mental health workforce. Being a minority female in this field can inspire others from similar backgrounds to pursue careers in mental health, thereby increasing the diversity of voices and perspectives in the field. Choosing a career in mental health, as a minority female, comes with its unique set of challenges and opportunities. I am acutely aware of the hurdles that may lie ahead, but I am equally motivated by the potential for positive impact and change. While my cultural background provides valuable insights, it can also present challenges. Overcoming the stigma surrounding mental health within minority communities may require delicate navigation and cultural sensitivity. The underrepresentation of minority professionals in mental health can create feelings of isolation and a lack of relatability for clients from similar backgrounds. Addressing this disparity will be an ongoing challenge. Addressing the systemic inequalities that contribute to the mental health crisis can be daunting. It will require advocacy, policy change, and a commitment to dismantling deeply ingrained disparities. My cultural background provides an opportunity to offer culturally competent care, bridging the gap between cultural norms and mental health treatment. This can be a powerful asset in fostering trust and understanding among clients. As a minority female in the mental health field, I have the opportunity to advocate for policies that promote equitable access to care and to educate both minority communities and the broader public about the importance of mental health. My presence in the field can challenge stereotypes and inspire others from similar backgrounds to pursue careers in mental health. This can contribute to the diversification of the mental health workforce. The intersection of cultural diversity and mental health presents a rich field for research and innovation. My unique perspective can drive research efforts that address the specific needs of minority populations. As a minority female in this field, I aspire to be a catalyst for transformation, a voice for the voiceless, and a source of hope and healing for those who need it most. My commitment to combating indifference, intolerance, and injustice is not merely an aspiration but a lifelong journey that has been shaped by personal experiences and a sense of moral responsibility. I have witnessed the devastating effects of prejudice and discrimination within my own community concerning mental illness and beyond. Unfortunately, minorities and other poorly represented groups receive some of the worst care due to circumstances. My focus on eradicating injustice extends to fostering open and constructive dialogue. I firmly believe that change begins with conversation, and I have been a proactive advocate for facilitating meaningful discussions on topics such as racial equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and gender equity. By promoting empathy and understanding, I aim to break down the barriers that perpetuate intolerance. With respect to relevancy, the fight against indifference, intolerance, and injustice is not static; it is an evolving mission that requires adaptability and relevance. I recognize the importance of staying informed about current events and emerging issues that impact our society. By remaining relevant and responsive to changing dynamics, I aim to be an effective advocate for positive change. My values resonate deeply with my own personal journey to become a nurse practitioner and aligns seamlessly These experiences have ignited a passion within me to work tirelessly toward a world where all individuals are treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their background or circumstances. Through my education and experiences, I aspire to become a nurse who not only provides exceptional clinical care but also advocates for policies and practices that support working mothers and families. I believe that healthcare should be inclusive and considerate of the diverse needs and challenges that patients face, and I am determined to be a driving force behind this change. In the end, the battles we wage within ourselves are just as significant as those fought on distant battlefields. By choosing a career in mental health, I am embracing the battle within, determined to make a difference in the lives of individuals and communities and to contribute to a world where mental health is a priority.

In my pursuit of a doctorate post masters certificate in psychiatry, my journey as an African American female has been marked by formidable obstacles. As I embark on this path, I have confronted a multitude of challenges that are distinct to my race, gender, and social circumstances. I continue to have a remarkable journey as an aspiring psychiatrist. Here I am all too eager to help destigmatize mental illness by overcoming social injustices by applying my unwavering determination to overcome them. In my utopian vision for optimal mental health in the Black community, the environment embraces mental health as an essential component of overall well-being. Stigma and misconceptions surrounding mental health are dismantled, fostering open dialogue and encouraging individuals to seek help without fear of judgment. This shift in mindset cultivates a culture of compassion, understanding, and support facilitating healing and growth. Within my utopia, mental health care is grounded in cultural competence and sensitivity. Mental health professionals such as myself will undergo extensive training to understand the unique experiences, historical trauma, and systemic challenges faced by the Black community. Therapeutic interventions incorporate culturally appropriate approaches, acknowledging the interconnectedness of mental, physical, and spiritual well-being within the community's context. This alone promotes advocacy to achieve social justice for communities of color. In my idealistic society, the medical health community ensures that mental health resources are accessible to all members of the Black community, irrespective of socioeconomic status. Community-based mental health clinics, telehealth services, and mobile units bring mental health care directly to underserved areas. Financial barriers are dismantled through affordable or subsidized services, expanded insurance coverage, and increased funding for mental health initiatives targeting communities of color. I strive to one day open a non-profit mental health center that offers nondiscriminatory care for all those in need of psychiatry. It would foster the creation of holistic support systems that address the interconnected needs of the Black community. Collaborative partnerships between mental health providers, schools, faith-based organizations, and social services would be utilized to create a comprehensive network of care. Mental health promotion is integrated into educational curricula, workplaces prioritize employee well-being, and community centers offer safe spaces for healing, support groups, and therapeutic activities. These are the concepts that I envision that can promote empowerment and resilience within the community. Mental health care empowers individuals in the Black community to recognize and harness their strengths. Cultivating resilience becomes a fundamental aspect of mental health promotion. Empowering narratives are embraced, highlighting the community's rich history, cultural heritage, and collective achievements. My utopia would largely stress the importance of psychoeducation as well. Mental health education fosters self-advocacy, equipping individuals with the tools to navigate societal challenges and overcome adversity. By breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, providing culturally competent care, ensuring equitable access to resources, fostering community-led advocacy, establishing holistic support systems, and nurturing empowerment and resilience, we can bridge the gaps that have hindered progress. This vision calls for collective action, where mental health care and advocacy become catalysts for social change and equality. Only by embracing this vision can we build a society where the mental well-being of the Black community thrives, paving the way for a future that honors the inherent worth and dignity of every individual, regardless of their race or ethnicity. Nevertheless, my determination against these disparities propelled me toward a career in psychiatry.

In the pursuit of a doctorate in psychiatry, the journey for an underserved African American minority female such as myself has been marked by formidable obstacles. As I embark on this path, I have confronted a multitude of challenges that are distinct to my race, gender, and social circumstances. I continue to have a remarkable journey as an aspiring psychiatrist. The weight of stereotypes can be suffocating, questioning whether their presence in the realm of psychiatry is merited. However, by embodying resilience and unwavering self-belief, my drive to become a psychiatrist defies these stereotypes, proving that excellence knows no racial or gender boundaries. Nevertheless, my determination against these disparities propelled me toward seeking out alternative avenues for learning and mentorship, demonstrating my remarkable resourcefulness and self-motivation. By surmounting societal stereotypes, combating limited resources, triumphing over financial hardships, seeking representation, and addressing healthcare disparities, I am redefining what is possible.

As a graduate student in Women's Health, I am inspired to be a health advocate and to provide encouragement to women about the importance of breast health education. I believe that it is essential for women to be informed about breast cancer awareness and the early detection of any signs or symptoms. Breast health education empowers women by providing them with knowledge and understanding about their bodies. By promoting breast health awareness, women become active participants in their own healthcare, enabling them to make informed decisions about preventive measures and seek timely medical attention when necessary. Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women. Through education, women can understand the risk factors, signs, and symptoms associated with breast cancer. This knowledge empowers them to seek prompt medical attention, facilitating early intervention, and ultimately reducing mortality rates. A prudent provider of women's health recognizes the importance of incorporating breast health education into every interaction with women. Important to note, breast health education promotes general breast health awareness beyond cancer detection. Women learn about maintaining breast health through lifestyle choices such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, limiting alcohol consumption, and avoiding smoking. Understanding breast health as a broader concept helps women prevent various breast-related issues and maintain overall well-being. With my experience as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner, I strive to inspire and empower women by providing them with the necessary information and resources needed for them to make educated decisions about their breast health. Breast health education enables women to understand their individual risk factors for breast cancer. By assessing family history, lifestyle choices, hormonal factors, and other pertinent information, I continue to be in an optimal position to guide women toward understanding their specific risk profile. I am committed to spreading awareness of breast health and providing access to education on this topic. As a women's health nurse practitioner and midwife, supporting and promoting breastfeeding is an integral part of my provider role. Breast health education plays a vital role in empowering women with knowledge about the benefits of breastfeeding for both mothers and babies. It helps women understand proper breastfeeding techniques, address common challenges, and make informed choices regarding infant nutrition. My role in promoting breast health education involves more than just providing evidence-based information and guidelines. I incorporate addressing not only the physical aspects but also the emotional well-being of women. By providing comprehensive education, I can continually help alleviate fears, myths, and misconceptions surrounding breast health and breast cancer. Supporting women emotionally creates a safe and supportive environment, allowing them to openly discuss their concerns, fears, and experiences. In summary, providing breast health education is a crucial component in my role as a women's health nurse practitioner/nurse midwife as it empowers women, promotes early detection of breast cancer, reduces mortality rates, raises breast health awareness, supports breastfeeding, enables risk assessment and counseling, and provides emotional support. By prioritizing breast health education, you can make a significant impact on the overall health and well-being of women in your care.

Graduate school can be an incredibly stressful and demanding experience. It is important to take care of your mental health while you are in school. I have found that the best way to do this is by incorporating mindfulness, meditation, yoga, nutrition, and other health maintenance activities into my daily life. Additionally, having a strong support system of family and friends has been instrumental in helping me cope with the stress of graduate school. Taking regular vacations and breaks has also allowed me to manage my stress levels better. I am a visual person, so serene images such as the ocean, sunsets and nature sights are truly my happy place. I am also an avid reader of books that address ways of managing stress on a day-to-day basis. Some of my favorite books to read are 'The Power of Your Subconscious Mind', Emotional Intelligence', 'Mind is the Master' and 'Shadow Work for Beginners' to name a few. Texts like these have been life-changing and helped me not just survive this life but thrive. They have helped me to stay grounded and to remember not to stress over trivial things but rather to live in the moment and appreciate the present moment. As a passionate public health advocate and dedicated nurse, I made it my personal goal to go to college to achieve better for myself to best serve the community. My terminal degree path is to earn my doctorate in nursing practice in the field of psychiatric mental health nursing. I know many within my community desperately need access to adequate mental health services. Positive experiences with the mental health industry involve access to treatments like therapy, medication, and support groups in helping people manage their mental health conditions. Many people have benefited from these treatments and have improved their quality of life. I am also a huge advocate of incorporating holistic methods such as mindfulness and yoga. I too can personally attest to the effectiveness of these interventions on loved ones suffering from mental illness. However, there are also negative experiences with the mental health industry, including the stigma associated with mental illness and the lack of access to affordable and quality mental health care. This stigma can prevent individuals from seeking the help they need, and the lack of access to care can exacerbate their condition. As a future mental health provider, I stand to break this cycle of negativity around the mental health industry. In conclusion, the importance of mental health cannot be overstated, and it is vital to address mental health issues and provide access to effective treatment. The mental health industry must work to eliminate stigma and improve access to quality care to help people manage their mental health effectively throughout the healthcare system.

Family can have a significant impact on a nursing student's goals, journey, and identity. This can be particularly influential when family members need extra care and support. Nursing school can be a challenging and demanding program that requires a lot of time and dedication, which can affect a student's family relationships. Regardless of these time restraints, I find it most important to take into consideration family needs. In terms of goals, family can be a motivating factor for nursing students. Many students enter the nursing profession with the goal of providing better care for their loved ones or becoming a positive role model. Family support and encouragement can also help nursing students stay motivated and focused on their studies. In order for family to be able to provide support, they too need to be cared for during challenging times. Family can also impact a nursing student's journey through nursing school. For example, family responsibilities, such as caring for children or elderly relatives, can make it challenging to balance schoolwork and personal obligations. I have been fortunate enough to find a productive work-home balance when it comes to family. For my aging parents, I have participated in nursing them back to health after surgeries and health complications. In addition, I continue to aid them with correctly taking their medications and keeping important follow-up appointments with specialists. I also made it my goal to provide them with emotional support and encouragement during their challenging times during the natural aging process. I do this with pleasure as I have great love and admiration for my parents. Finally, the family can also impact a nursing student's identity. The nursing profession is often viewed as a caring profession, and many nursing students feel a strong sense of responsibility to care for their patients. Family values and beliefs can also influence a nursing student's approach to patient care and their interactions with colleagues. Without the presence of my elderly parents in my life, I would not be the person I am today. As a result, I have no problem caring for them during challenging times of agings Overall, the family can play a significant role in a nursing student's journey through school and in shaping their goals and identity as a future nurse. Family members must seek each other's support and understanding throughout all stages of life. Because of the support I received from my family, I was able to persevere and return the favor by supporting them in happiness and health.

I plan on using my graduate degree to help those who do not have a voice in society. I want to help give a voice to the voiceless and help fight for social justice within my community. As an African American female in healthcare, I know that I am the minority in society as well as with regards to healthcare provider demographics. I stand to take on the role of a public health advocate for members of the community and other healthcare providers such as myself. It is my goal to use my Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree that is currently in progress to gain the knowledge and expertise to teach upcoming nurse practitioners and healthcare providers as well as individuals in the community. My ultimate goal is to open up a Psychiatric and Mental Health facility that is open to all regardless of race, gender and sexual orientation that provides counseling and knowledge regarding a myriad of topics in the realm of mental health and public health. As a public health advocate with a to-be-completed Doctorate of Nursing and Psychiatry degree, I will obtain the ideal credentials to be able to guide others in society on the right path. With the combination of my prior experiences and what I am destined to gain in my current curriculum at the University of North Florida, I am eager to execute my plan to support others in the community across forward-moving agendas. I know that it can sometimes only take one voice or advocate to invoke significant positive change in their community and I am up for the challenge. As both a woman and a minority in medicine, I am prepared to withstand any prejudices I may encounter in the workforce and use this a fuel to continue upon my journey. My ancestors will be proud of the level of tenacity I will exude through my career in medicine. I thank you for your time and consideration in investing in me as I will truly be an asset to my community and beyond. As a strong woman, I will always push through adversities to get to the other side because struggles will only make me stronger. One of my favorite books "Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor's Reflections on Race" has been a poignant yet relevant book regarding my journey in healthcare and gained great advice from this text. I recommend any healthcare professional to read as this truly helped shape my career path.

The effects of the pandemic have shone a spotlight on the importance of mental health, and this has guided me to prioritize my mental well-being in all aspects of my life. As a passionate public health advocate and dedicated nurse, I made it my personal goal to go to college to achieve better for myself to best serve the community. I was able to complete my nursing degree at a four-year college with the help of the Pell grant and scholarships for low income families. I am very fortunate to have been given that opportunity to help support my personal and professional goals. I have been able to strive in my current career path and get myself out of poverty in my 20s. I hope that funding remains available for all those in need. As a minority female working in medicine, I know many within my community desperately need access to adequate health services. Returning to school after a long break can be challenging. One of the biggest challenges I faced was having to readjust to the academic workload and the organization that comes with it. As a mother of three children (one toddler and two that I home-school myself), I am quite familiar with the importance of being able to multitask. I am thankful that I grasped this concept early on by being a parent. Additionally, working full-time has allowed me to create an effective work-life balance to ensure I am taking care of my mental health even during trying times. Because of my many roles and responsibilities, I continue to work on becoming more organized and efficient with my time management. I also had to overcome distractions and procrastination by setting specific goals and breaking them down into smaller, achievable tasks. I was even able to find an app on my smartphone that allows me to list out my daily tasks and goals for the day. The utilization of this app has been a huge aid in my academic success thus far in graduate school. Finally, I had to make sure I was taking care of my physical and mental health as I was juggling school and work. With the help of friends, family, colleagues and fellow students alike, I feel more than equipped to continue to strive through graduate school. One way I have been able to help with the myriad of issues that arise in school is by obtaining a mentor. I was able to find a mentor who has gone through the same situations both in life and in school. My mentor is thus empathetic to my situation and has provided many helpful tips for me along the way. It is my goal to serve as a mentor in a similar way once I have reached my goal and even along my journey as well. To conclude, I am thankful for any challenges I face as I attend graduate school as it has made me a more resilient person who is more apt to readily troubleshoot any problems. If there is anything I have learned so far in graduate school, it is to persist and not give up even in the face of adversity, nay-sayers, and perceived roadblocks to the end goal. I have overcome financial, physical and emotional obstacles regarding returning to school and I feel proud of my accomplishment thus far. I am limitless!

It is my hopes that funding remains available for all those in need. Being in the medical field has many benefits and by providing healthcare I assume the role of a leader in every aspect. Throughout my journey of becoming a better leader, I have been able to understand the concept of leadership and what it truly means to me. My vision of a great leader includes someone who has a consciousness about self and knows what they believe in. They live in conformance with their values and morals and they strive to achieve their full potential. A leader never gives-up and they are always committed to achieving their goals. This sounds like my path, as I am continually on a path to succeed despite obstacles. Healthcare is an ever evolving arena which brings both rewards and challenges for the clinician. With over 15 years of experience in healthcare, I have participated in a continually changing environment of which I feel I can contribute to in a positive way. One major change I have witness is the need for more accessible mental health services. In both outpatient clinic and hospital settings, the APRN has become a necessary extension of the physician and medical team as a whole to aid in this expansion. With the presence of APRNs, a different approach to caring is achieved which enhances the overall care received by patients in our communities. As an APRN I have had the benefit of providing independent care as well as under MD supervisory status. It is my goal as in APRN to continue to provide high quality, comprehensive and affordable care to all in the population. With my specialty training in OBGYN and psychiatry, my goal is to become a steady participant in the lives of women and children as they strive to obtain their best physical and mental health with the aid APRN delivered care. To maintain my own mental wellness, I participate in daily meditation, stretching, yoga and overall positive self talk. Even during the completion of this essay I feel positive and optimistic about the opportunities ahead of me regarding receiving the much needed funding to continue my journey in mental health. My positive disposition knows that even if I am not the winner of this essay, another equally worthy candidate will be chosen for the benefit of the health community.
