On October 19, 2018, I woke up to go on a Sunday bike ride with my family. This was something we did a lot since the weather was finally starting to cool down. My parents, younger brother, and I got on our bikes and headed down the Bridal Path on Central Ave. We rode to get lunch and spend some time together. On the way back things did not go as expected. I was in front of my family, looking forward to getting home and seeing my friends. We had the right away and crossed a small, neighborhood street when a car did not stop and hit me head-on. Once the driver realized she slammed on her brakes throwing me off the hood of the car and onto the ground. I quickly got up not realizing what had just happened. My family rushed over to me and called 9-1-1 for help. The ambulance arrived and took me to the hospital. Hours went by and tests were done, luckily I had no major injuries and was discharged. After a few days, the shock of it all had gone away and I realized what had happened. I became terrified of something happening again. I refused to get in the car with anyone besides my mom. Even when she was driving, I would flinch if a car was even heading in my direction. This anxiety built up and led to more issues. I was scared to do anything. This fear controlled my life. Now, almost five years later, I have overcome these anxieties. It took tremendous amounts of help from my parents, friends, doctors, therapists, and psychiatrists. The anxiety caused me to withdraw from all the things I had previously enjoyed. Being in an almost constant state of fear then caused depression. I was at an all-time low wishing I did not have to live anymore. I was fortunate enough to receive help and recover from these battles. Now my goal is to help people in ways I was lucky enough to. Even before my accident I always had an interest in medicine. I was three years old and watching Untold Stories of the ER fascinated by the chaos of it all. Since then I knew the medical field was where I wanted to be. I want to be an emergency room doctor treating new patients every day not knowing what will come through the door next. I want to save lives and impact patients and their family's lives forever. At Arizona State University, I hope to study pre-med by majoring in Biological Sciences (Biomedical Sciences) to explore my interest in emergency medicine and possibly one day become an emergency room doctor. I believe that Arizona State University is an ideal place for me to study pre-med because of the lively environment and great academics.

I feel education is the path to success. No matter how young or old you are there are always things to learn in life. This is true both in and out of the classroom. I was lucky enough to go to preschool as a child and I was reading at age three. Since then I knew I was passionate about learning and furthering my academics. I took advanced classes all through elementary and middle school, I knew my grades would be my top priority. It's always great to have fun and play. However, my academics challenged me to not just do what is necessary for my classes but to go above and beyond. I worked hard to get ahead in classes and take the extra time to read and/or study. I knew since the age of 5 that I wanted to be a doctor. My parents encouraged me from an early age. They said that achieving my goals would take many many years of education and schooling. In middle school, I joined the National Junior Honors Society along with a Spanish program. I loved the education these programs provided and was honored to win an award in both. In high school, I took honors and AP classes maintaining excellent grades in my studies all four years. At the same time, I served in the Sports Medicine Club and HOSA (Health Occupational Students of America) and served as the president of both clubs. This allowed me to accumulate over 1,100 hours of community service. Having these opportunities via the education system provided a path to excel. This gave me confidence and boosted my motivation. I want to continue to strive to work hard in college as I move towards my educational goals in the medical field. I've considered many occupations in medicine from a cardiothoracic surgeon to an ER doctor to a psychiatrist. No matter what career path I may go down one thing is certain, I want to save lives. I feel strongly doctors have a huge impact and the opportunity to save lives and make a difference. Not only for the patient but for their friends and family members. I will be attending Arizona State University and majoring in Biomedical Sciences to further my career aspirations. After attending all four years at Arizona State and getting my bachelor's degree, I wish to continue my education in medical school. Ultimately, through education, I will achieve my life goal of a career in the medical field!
