How I Plan to Use My Education/Degree to Enhance the African-American Community: I plan to use my degree in finance and accounting to empower the African-American community by addressing economic challenges and promoting financial literacy, business growth, and equity. Financial stability is a critical foundation for building stronger communities, and I want to help bridge the gap in financial education and resources that often holds back underserved populations. One of my main goals is to create financial literacy programs tailored to the needs of African-American individuals and families. Many people in our community don’t have access to the knowledge or tools needed to manage money effectively. Through free workshops at schools, churches, and community centers, I hope to teach skills like budgeting, saving, investing, and building credit. By making this information accessible, I want to empower people to take control of their finances and build generational wealth, ensuring a brighter future for themselves and their families. Supporting African-American entrepreneurs and small businesses is another priority for me. Small businesses are the backbone of any community, but many African-American business owners face significant challenges, such as limited access to funding and mentorship. I want to use my education to help these entrepreneurs succeed by offering financial advice, creating business plans, and connecting them with resources like grants and loans. By helping businesses grow, I aim to increase job opportunities and boost the overall economic health of our communities. In addition to education and direct support, I plan to be an advocate for systemic change. The racial wealth gap, discriminatory lending practices, and unequal access to opportunities are long-standing issues that continue to affect the African-American community. I want to work with policymakers and financial institutions to address these disparities and ensure fair access to resources like affordable housing, business funding, and investment opportunities. By advocating for change at a systemic level, I hope to create a more equitable financial system for future generations. Representation is also important to me. Many young African-Americans don’t see people who look like them in fields like finance and accounting, which can make it hard to imagine themselves in those careers. I want to be a role model who shows that success in these fields is achievable. Through mentoring programs and career workshops, I plan to inspire students to pursue opportunities in business and finance. By sharing my journey, I hope to give them the confidence to follow their own paths and create positive change in their communities. HBCUs Applied To: I am applying to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) such as Howard University, Morehouse College, and Florida A&M University. These schools are known for their strong business programs and dedication to uplifting African-American students. Commitment to an HBCU: While I have not yet committed to an HBCU, I am excited about the opportunity to attend one. HBCUs offer not only academic excellence but also a supportive environment where I can grow as a leader and contribute to my community. I look forward to joining an institution that shares my values and will help me achieve my goals.

My name is Shaun Evans, and growing up in a single-parent household, I’ve faced my fair share of adversity. One of the most significant challenges came when my mom had to work multiple jobs to support our family. This meant that I had to step up and take on more responsibilities at home, while also managing my own schoolwork. As a high school student, I wanted to help my mom and ease the financial burden she carried, so I took on a part-time job. Balancing school, work, and personal life was difficult, and there were many times when I felt overwhelmed. I was constantly juggling between attending classes, completing assignments, and working late into the night at my job. At times, it felt like I was failing at everything because I didn’t have enough time or energy to give my best effort in any one area. However, this adversity taught me valuable lessons. The most important thing I learned was the value of time management. I realized I couldn’t continue to rely on my natural ability to get by, so I had to get organized. I started using a planner to track all of my assignments, work shifts, and other obligations. I made a schedule that prioritized my schoolwork while still allowing me to work my shifts. I learned how to break down big tasks into smaller, more manageable ones, and how to stay on top of deadlines. I also learned to be patient with myself and to accept that I couldn’t always be perfect in every area of my life. Along with time management, I learned how important it is to ask for help. I’m a naturally independent person, and for a long time, I felt like I had to do everything on my own. But I realized that asking for support from my teachers, friends, and family was a strength, not a weakness. When I was struggling to keep up with my schoolwork, I reached out to my teachers and asked for extra help. They were more than willing to offer guidance, and they appreciated my effort to succeed. This support allowed me to stay on track with my education and gave me the encouragement I needed to keep pushing forward. This experience shaped who I am today by teaching me resilience and perseverance. It showed me that even when life seems overwhelming, I have the strength to push through. I also learned that success isn’t always about doing everything perfectly, but about staying focused on your goals and continuing to make progress, no matter how small. If I were to give advice to someone facing similar circumstances, I would tell them to never give up, no matter how tough things get. Life may not always go as planned, but if you stay focused and organized, you can overcome the challenges in your way. I would also tell them that it’s okay to ask for help and that reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness. Don’t be afraid to lean on others when you need it, because that’s how you grow and succeed. Most importantly, stay committed to your dreams and know that your hard work will eventually pay off.

My name is Shaun, and I’m passionate about studying finance, hoping to use my knowledge to make a real difference for people in communities like mine. Growing up in a single-parent household, I’ve seen my mom work tirelessly to provide for us, and I understand firsthand how difficult it can be to maintain stability when financial resources are limited. My mom’s hard work has taught me resilience and a strong sense of purpose, driving me to pursue a career where I can help others achieve security and independence through financial education. Finance is more than just a field I find interesting; it feels like the path I was meant to take. I see the impact that financial stability—or the lack of it—has on everyday life, especially in underserved communities. I want to be someone who can break down the complexities of finance and help others feel empowered in managing their money, whether it’s through budgeting, saving, investing, or simply understanding how to build a secure future. By making financial literacy more accessible, I believe I can help individuals and families find stability, no matter their starting point. Along this journey, one of my biggest challenges has been balancing my responsibilities at home with my commitments to school and sports. There were times when I had to turn down activities or give up on opportunities I wanted to pursue because my family needed my support. These sacrifices were tough, but they taught me invaluable lessons about hard work, resilience, and time management. Rather than viewing these responsibilities as setbacks, I’ve learned to see them as steps forward, shaping my character and strengthening my resolve to succeed in college and beyond. These experiences have made me stronger and have taught me how to focus on my goals, regardless of the challenges I face. This scholarship would make a significant difference in my life, not just financially but also in terms of opportunity. By reducing the financial burden on my family, it would give me the chance to dive deeply into my studies, taking full advantage of what college has to offer. I could spend more time gaining hands-on experience through internships and networking opportunities, which are essential for success in the finance industry. This scholarship represents a critical step in my journey toward making a lasting impact on people’s lives, especially those who, like me, have seen how financial struggles can limit opportunities. In the long term, I hope to establish financial literacy programs within underserved communities to help others build their own foundations of security and independence. The support from this scholarship would be the first step in that journey, allowing me to focus on learning and growing so I can bring my goals to life.
      John R. "Ham" Williams Scholarship
Basketball has shaped my identity and given me a sense of purpose and pride as a young African American man. Growing up in a single-parent household with limited resources, I faced a lot of challenges. Basketball became my escape, my motivator, and a source of discipline, resilience, and teamwork. Every time I step onto the court, I feel connected to something larger than myself—a legacy of powerful, determined Black athletes who overcame obstacles, just like I’m working to do. Basketball has taught me to handle setbacks, remain focused, and work toward my goals with unbreakable determination. The pride I feel on the court comes not just from the game itself, but from what it has taught me about character and identity. I’ve learned that being a strong player is as much about mental resilience as it is about physical skill, and these lessons go beyond the court. It’s about facing adversity, pushing past it, and holding myself to a high standard. I am grateful to be part of a sport that has introduced me to lifelong mentors and teammates who inspire me to be my best. Each game reminds me of the potential within me and the future I want to create for myself and others. This scholarship will allow me to pursue my goal of earning a degree in business, so I can eventually create community programs that help other young athletes find their path. I want to give back by creating spaces where underserved kids can find support, mentorship, and the same opportunities for growth that I’ve been lucky enough to experience. I want to honor John Roy “Ham” Williams by using my success in basketball and beyond to uplift others. His journey inspires me to work hard and stay focused, knowing that every bit of effort I put into my education and sport can be a step toward not just a better future for me, but for those who come after me. Through this scholarship, I hope to not only build my career but also make an impact on my community. I envision programs that blend athletics, mentorship, and educational resources, helping young people discover the strength and pride within themselves, just as I have. Basketball has made me proud of who I am and where I come from, and with this opportunity, I’m eager to carry that pride forward, building a legacy that honors the hard work, resilience, and determination that I’ve learned from both the sport and from icons like John Roy “Ham” Williams.

My name is Shaun Evans, and I’m a high school senior with a passion for business and finance. Growing up in a single-parent household, I’ve seen firsthand how financial challenges can shape a family’s life. My mother has been my biggest inspiration, working tirelessly to ensure that I have the opportunities I need to succeed. Her determination has motivated me to pursue a career in business, specifically in finance, so that I can make a difference for families like mine who face financial instability. I believe that by understanding and helping others manage their finances, I can empower individuals to take control of their financial futures, leading to more secure and stable lives. This scholarship would make a significant difference in my life by helping me pursue higher education without placing a financial burden on my family. I’m committed to attending college and earning a degree in business or finance, with the long-term goal of becoming a financial advisor or entrepreneur. I want to start my own financial consulting firm, where I can assist individuals and small businesses in making informed financial decisions. I believe that financial literacy is key to creating opportunities, and I want to help others gain the knowledge and confidence they need to succeed. One of the most challenging moments in my life occurred when my mother lost her job a few years ago. It was a difficult time for us emotionally and financially, as we weren’t sure how we would cover our bills or stay afloat. I remember feeling both scared and powerless, but instead of giving in to those feelings, I decided to step up. I started working part-time while balancing my schoolwork and football practices, helping contribute to the household and lessen some of the financial stress on my mom. This experience taught me the importance of resilience and perseverance in the face of hardship. It also strengthened my desire to pursue a career in finance, so that I can help families avoid the same struggles we faced. My long-term goal is to create a future where financial literacy and stability are accessible to everyone, regardless of their background. I want to continue learning and developing my skills in college and, eventually, use my education to give back to my community by offering financial support and guidance. This scholarship will not only allow me to attend college without financial strain, but it will also be the first step in helping me reach my career aspirations of making a lasting impact through business and finance.
Ryan Stripling “Words Create Worlds” Scholarship for Young Writers
What I love most about writing is how it gives me a voice and allows me to express ideas, emotions, and experiences in ways that speaking sometimes can’t. Writing offers a certain kind of freedom—whether it’s crafting a story, reflecting on personal experiences, or analyzing a complex topic, it lets me slow down and really think. Through writing, I can explore different perspectives, dive deep into emotions, and work through complicated thoughts in a way that feels both creative and purposeful. I enjoy being able to translate my inner thoughts into something tangible, whether that’s a short story, a personal reflection, or an essay that connects ideas I’m passionate about. It’s almost like a puzzle—finding the right words, piecing them together, and watching a whole idea come to life on the page. Writing has been a big part of my life, and I plan to carry that with me into college. Even though I’m majoring in finance, I know that writing will continue to play an important role in both my academic journey and my personal growth. In finance, communication is key, and writing will help me explain complex financial concepts clearly to others, whether it’s in reports, presentations, or articles. Writing forces me to organize my thoughts and present them in a way that makes sense to others, which is a skill I know I’ll use in the professional world. Whether I’m writing emails, creating financial plans, or even giving financial advice through a blog or newsletter, clear writing will help me connect with clients and make difficult concepts more approachable. Beyond academics, I also see writing as a creative outlet that will help me manage stress and stay grounded throughout my college years. I plan to continue journaling regularly as a way to reflect on my experiences, set goals, and track my personal growth. Writing has always helped me process emotions and deal with challenges, so I know it will be an important tool for self-care while adjusting to college life. Additionally, I’m excited about the possibility of joining a writing club or literary group in college, where I can connect with other students who share my passion for writing. Being part of a creative community will give me the chance to share ideas, receive feedback, and improve my skills while also learning from others. I also hope to continue exploring creative writing during my free time. Whether it’s short stories, poetry, or even starting a blog, writing gives me a sense of fulfillment that I want to keep nurturing in college. It helps me think critically and see the world from new angles, which is valuable not just in writing but in life overall. Writing is something I can always turn to, no matter what field I’m in, because it allows me to express myself, connect with others, and explore the world around me in a meaningful way. In the end, writing isn’t just a skill for me—it’s a passion that shapes how I think and how I communicate. As I head to college, I plan to keep it close, knowing that it will be a key part of my academic success, my future career in finance, and my personal development. Through writing, I hope to not only achieve my own goals but also inspire and inform others along the way.

      Minecraft Forever Fan Scholarship
One of my favorite aspects of Minecraft is the creative building and design element. In a world where possibilities are virtually limitless, I find immense joy in the freedom to construct whatever my imagination can conjure. Whether it's crafting a cozy cottage nestled in a serene forest, a towering skyscraper in the middle of a bustling city, or an elaborate castle perched on a mountain, each creation serves as a reflection of my creativity and passion for design. What resonates with me the most about building in Minecraft is the satisfaction that comes from transforming a simple landscape into something extraordinary. I love starting with an empty plot of land, visualizing my dream structure, and gradually bringing it to life, one block at a time. The process is both meditative and exhilarating; I often lose track of time as I immerse myself in planning, gathering resources, and executing my vision. Each project feels like a personal challenge, where I can push the limits of my design skills and explore different architectural styles and techniques. The materials available in Minecraft also inspire creativity. The diversity of blocks—from classic stone and wood to colorful terracotta and shimmering quartz—allows me to experiment with textures, colors, and shapes. I often find myself combining elements that may not traditionally go together in real life, such as building a modern glass house adjacent to a rustic log cabin. This creative freedom encourages me to think outside the box and consider unconventional solutions to design challenges. Collaborating with friends adds another layer of enjoyment to the building experience. Working together on a project fosters teamwork and sparks inspiration. I love sharing ideas, brainstorming concepts, and pooling our resources to create something even more impressive than we could achieve alone. There’s a unique thrill in seeing our combined visions come to life, whether it’s constructing a grand city or designing intricate redstone contraptions. These shared moments strengthen our friendships and create lasting memories. Beyond the enjoyment of building, I also appreciate the valuable life skills that Minecraft has helped me develop. The game teaches patience, resource management, and problem-solving. I often face obstacles, whether it's finding the right materials, planning an efficient layout, or overcoming a design flaw. These challenges require critical thinking and adaptability, skills that extend beyond the game and into real-life situations. For instance, learning to work with limited resources has made me more resourceful in my daily life, while collaborating with others has improved my communication and teamwork abilities. Moreover, the sense of accomplishment that comes from completing a building project is unmatched. When I step back to admire the structure I’ve created, I feel a profound sense of pride. It serves as a tangible representation of my efforts, creativity, and dedication. This achievement motivates me to take on even more ambitious projects, pushing me to expand my skills and challenge my boundaries further. In conclusion, the creative building aspect of Minecraft holds a special place in my heart because it allows me to express myself, learn valuable skills, and connect with others. Each creation tells a story, reflecting my imagination and passion for design. As I continue to explore and innovate within the game, I look forward to the endless opportunities that await me in the world of Minecraft, knowing that each block I place is a step toward honing my creativity and problem-solving abilities.

John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
I chose finance because I’ve seen firsthand how important financial stability is to building a secure future. Growing up in a single-parent household, I watched my mother work hard to support us, and I quickly realized how challenging it can be to manage money effectively. For me, finance is about more than just numbers; it’s about empowering people to make informed decisions that can improve their futures. Winner
Reflecting on my childhood, I realize that I wish more adults had asked me, "What are your dreams, and how can I help you achieve them?" Growing up in a single-parent household, the focus was often on day-to-day survival—making sure I stayed out of trouble, did well in school, and helped around the house. While these things were essential, they didn’t leave much room for deeper conversations about my long-term goals or aspirations. I often felt that there wasn’t enough attention on what I truly wanted for my future. As a result, I sometimes struggled to figure out what direction I wanted to take in life, especially when it came to thinking beyond the present challenges. The absence of this question "What are your dreams?" has had a significant impact on me. It made me realize how important it is for young people to be encouraged to dream big and think beyond their current circumstances. I didn’t always feel that I had the opportunity to think about my future in a broad, ambitious way. Instead, I was focused on meeting immediate expectations and dealing with the challenges of growing up in a financially unstable environment. This experience has shaped my aspirations in a profound way. Today, I am deeply passionate about finance, specifically because I understand how powerful financial knowledge and stability can be in shaping someone’s future. If more adults had asked me about my dreams and supported me in discovering them, I might have realized sooner that finance was the path I wanted to pursue. Finance, to me, is more than just numbers it’s a tool for empowerment, security, and building a future. Understanding finances means understanding how to create opportunities, not just for myself but for others as well. Now, as I work toward my goal of studying finance in college, I am motivated by the desire to help others who are in similar situations to the one I grew up in. I want to be the person who asks, “What are your dreams, and how can I help you achieve them?” I want to work in financial planning and advising, especially for individuals and families who have experienced financial instability. I believe that financial education is key to breaking cycles of poverty and creating lasting change in people’s lives. My goal is to provide the knowledge and support that I felt was missing during my own upbringing. The absence of that critical question in my life has fueled my drive to make a difference. I want to create opportunities for people to dream bigger than their current circumstances. By pursuing a career in finance, I aim to give others the financial tools and guidance they need to achieve their goals, just as I continue to work toward achieving my own. Through finance, I can help people plan for their futures, build stability, and ultimately create a life that reflects their true aspirations.

Her unwavering commitment has instilled in me the values of hard work, resilience, and determination that have shaped who I am today. My mother has always prioritized my education, working tirelessly to balance her job while actively engaging in my academic life. Through her support, I learned the importance of teamwork, leadership, and community, values that I carry with me today. Now, as I prepare to transition to college, I carry her lessons with me. My aspiration to study finance and accounting stems from my desire to create a stable future for myself and to one day help others achieve financial literacy and security. I want to empower those in my community, especially young people from single-parent households like mine, to pursue their dreams despite challenges. This scholarship would not only honor my mother’s dedication and sacrifices but also support my educational journey. It would allow me to focus on my studies and alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with higher education. I am determined to make my mother proud by excelling in college and ultimately making a positive impact in my community. With the support of this scholarship, I aim to give back to others as she has given to me, ensuring her legacy of love, support, and resilience continues to inspire those around me. Thank you for considering my application.

      David Hinsdale Memorial Scholarship
My name is Shaun Evans, and I have spent much of my life witnessing the financial instability that plagues many of the people closest to me. Growing up in a single-parent household with my brother, I saw my family work tirelessly to make ends meet. Despite my mom’s dedication, financial security often seemed out of reach. Beyond my own household, several of my relatives have struggled with debt, poor credit, and a lack of financial guidance. Seeing these challenges has shaped my determination to make a difference, not just for my family, but for my entire community. This personal experience is what drives my passion for finance. I’ve come to believe that financial education is the key to breaking the cycles of instability that affect so many families like mine. By pursuing a degree in finance and accounting, I want to become a resource for those who, like my loved ones, never had the opportunity to learn how to manage their money effectively. My goal is to provide practical financial advice and tools to help others build savings, plan for the future, and avoid falling into debt. Growing up in a financially unstable environment has taught me the value of hard work and resilience. It has also given me a unique perspective on the importance of financial literacy. I want to go to college to study finance because I believe that understanding money is one of the most powerful ways to lift people out of hardship. With the knowledge I will gain, I plan to return to my community to offer free financial workshops, counseling, and resources for families like mine who have been underserved for too long. My dream is to create programs that not only educate but empower. I want to help people understand their finances in a way that gives them control over their futures, rather than being controlled by their circumstances. By focusing on topics like budgeting, credit management, and investing, I hope to give families the tools they need to build lasting financial stability. I also plan to work with local schools and community centers to introduce financial literacy at a younger age, so that the next generation grows up with the knowledge they need to thrive. Ultimately, I am determined to make a positive impact on my community by helping others avoid the struggles that I grew up around. My hard work and dedication to this goal are unwavering, and I believe that through education and perseverance, I can help create a brighter financial future for my community.
