Bio

I have always wanted to be a nurse because when I go to a clinic or hospital it always the nurses who are taking care or having interactions with the actual patient. I want to be a pediatric nurse because I love little kids, and kids are something I am passionate about. I believe they are our future. It hurts me to see them in pain, and I want to help them feel and be better because if they are better, then the world could possibly benefit from their contributions. I am a great candidate because even though there could be people who are academically or athletically better than me, I am still going to try my very best to prove that I deserve it more than anyone else.

Rev. Herman A. Martin Memorial Scholarship
I am an African American senior scholar from Camden Fairview High School. I have been active in the school and community through athletic, academic, and community service extracurriculars. I play for the Varsity Volleyball and Varsity Track teams at Camden Fairview High School. I have volunteered around the community at the courthouse and the First Friday event. I am currently an Arkansas Scholar and a National African American Scholar. I plan to attend the University of Central Arkansas and major in Nursing. I plan to specialize in pediatric care. Getting my degree would allow me to help the people of the community by helping them remain in good health. A few years down the road, I would like to return to school and receive my Practitioner's license. I plan to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Arkansas has become one of the many states that allow Nurse Practitioners to practice independently after a few years under a doctor. In the future, I hope to open a practice of my own. There are several rural areas around the state of Arkansas without an adequate number of medical professionals and are experiencing shortages that affect the patients they treat. My plans of entering the medical field would allow for the community to have more health professionals in the area. Children have always held a special place in my heart. I experienced childhood illness, and the professionals - doctors, nurses, and practitioners, helped me get through it, and I am very thankful for them. Because of my experiences and observations, pediatric care is an important objective of mine. Becoming a nurse will allow me to help children even if it is just by making them laugh or smile. Medicine is a field that is widely unknown yet. There are plenty of breakthroughs every day. I aim to help people through medicine. My intended degree and field will allow me to be able to help change the world through medicine. The healthcare field is a rough topic currently. It could be said because of either the underpayment of some essential workers or the overall costliness of needed care. I know that I could most likely never make an impact on the world as a whole, but it will never stop me from trying to change it even if it is on a smaller level such as by making someone smile or making their day a little bit better and brighter.
