    Maida Brkanovic Memorial Scholarship
When my family and I moved to the United States from Bangladesh, I was only five years old. At that age, I was too young to fully grasp the enormity of what it meant to leave everything behind and start over in a new country. However, as I grew older, the experience of being a first-generation immigrant began to profoundly shape my beliefs about life. It is a journey that has been both challenging and enriching, instilling in me a deep sense of responsibility, resilience, and a desire to make the most of the opportunities I have been given. One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned from my experience as a first-generation immigrant is the power of resilience. My parents made incredible sacrifices to provide a better life for my siblings and me. Watching them work tirelessly, often at jobs that were far beneath their qualifications, taught me that success is not about how easily things come to you, but about how you respond to the challenges you face. In school, I often felt like an outsider. My classmates spoke perfect English, while I was still learning how to communicate effectively. I was always aware of the cultural differences that set me apart, from the food I brought for lunch to the customs we observed at home. However, rather than letting these differences isolate me, I embraced them as part of my identity. I learned to navigate between two cultures, understanding that my background was not a barrier but a unique asset. This resilience has carried me through academic challenges and helped me persevere in the face of obstacles. As a first-generation student, I have always understood that education is not just a pathway to personal success but a way to honor the sacrifices of my parents. They left everything familiar behind to ensure that their children could have the opportunities they never had. This understanding has fueled my passion for learning and driven me to excel academically. Being the first in my family to attend college comes with its own set of challenges. There was no roadmap to follow, no one to turn to for advice on navigating the complexities of higher education. I had to figure it out on my own, often learning through trial and error. However, this experience has made me incredibly resourceful and determined. I have developed a strong belief in the power of self-advocacy and the importance of seeking out resources and opportunities, no matter how difficult they might be to find. My experiences as an immigrant and a first-generation student have also instilled in me a strong sense of responsibility—not just to my family, but to my community and the world at large. I am acutely aware that I stand on the shoulders of those who came before me, and I must use the opportunities I’ve been given to make a difference. This sense of responsibility is what led me to pursue a degree in cybersecurity. In today’s world, where technology plays an increasingly critical role in our lives, I believe it is essential to protect the systems and information that we rely on. My goal is to use my skills to contribute to the safety and security of our digital world, particularly for those who are most vulnerable. Growing up as an immigrant has made me deeply appreciative of diversity and the importance of inclusivity. I have seen firsthand how different perspectives can enrich our understanding of the world and lead to innovative solutions to complex problems. This belief has driven me to become an active member of organizations such as the Society of Women Engineers and the Women in Computing Society, where I work to promote diversity in STEM fields. As someone who has often felt like the “other,” I am committed to creating spaces where everyone feels welcome and valued. I believe that our differences are our strengths and that by embracing them, we can build a more just and equitable society. As I continue my educational journey, I carry with me the lessons I’ve learned from my experiences as a first-generation immigrant and student. I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given, and I am determined to use them to make a positive impact on the world. My experiences have taught me that while the path may not always be easy, it is the challenges we face that shape us into who we are meant to be. I am proud of my heritage and the resilience it has instilled in me. My journey has been one of growth and self-discovery, and I am excited to see where it will lead me next. I believe that with hard work, determination, and a commitment to making the world a better place, there is nothing I cannot achieve.
    Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
Choosing my top three Billie Eilish songs is challenging, as her entire discography speaks to me on so many levels. However, the songs that resonate most deeply with me are "Everything I Wanted," "Ocean Eyes," and "My Future." Each of these tracks has impacted me profoundly, helping me navigate my emotions and inspiring me to embrace my true self. "Everything I Wanted" is an anthem for anyone who has ever felt overwhelmed by their own expectations or the pressures of others. For me, it encapsulates the struggle of balancing personal ambitions with the desire for external validation. The lyrics speak to the vulnerability of reaching for dreams while grappling with self-doubt. The line "But when I wake up, I see you with me" is especially powerful, as it reminds me that no matter how daunting life may seem, there are always people who love and support me. This song has been a source of comfort during moments of anxiety, reminding me that I'm not alone in my fears. "Ocean Eyes" was the first Billie Eilish song I ever heard, and it immediately captured my heart. The ethereal quality of her voice combined with the hauntingly beautiful lyrics creates an atmosphere of melancholy that is both soothing and reflective. The song's exploration of longing and the deep emotional impact of love resonates with me on a personal level. It reminds me of the bittersweet nature of relationships and how they shape us. "Ocean Eyes" has been my go-to track when I need to process my feelings, offering a safe space to explore the depths of my emotions. "My Future" is a song that feels like a personal manifesto for growth and self-love. The way Billie transitions from reflecting on her past to looking forward to her future is incredibly empowering. The lyrics, "I'm in love with my future, can't wait to meet her," inspire me to embrace the unknown and trust in my journey. This song resonates with me because it reminds me of the importance of self-acceptance and the beauty of evolving into who I'm meant to be. Whenever I listen to "My Future," I feel a renewed sense of hope and excitement for what's to come. These three songs have not only been a soundtrack to my life but have also guided me through some of my most challenging moments. Billie's ability to articulate complex emotions with such clarity and honesty has made her music an essential part of my personal growth. Her songs remind me to stay true to myself, to embrace my vulnerabilities, and to always look forward to the future with optimism.

My name is Shafia, and I am a first-generation immigrant from Bangladesh, having moved to the United States at the age of five. Growing up in a multicultural environment has shaped my perspective and instilled in me a strong appreciation for community, diversity, and social justice. Currently, I am pursuing a degree in cybersecurity, driven by a passion for technology and a desire to create a safer digital world. While my academic focus is not in urban planning and economics, I recognize the significant intersection between technology and urban development, particularly in addressing pressing social issues such as homelessness, gentrification, and the need for affordable housing. Throughout my life, I have witnessed the challenges faced by marginalized communities, particularly in urban settings. Observing how gentrification can displace long-standing residents and alter the cultural fabric of neighborhoods has fueled my commitment to understanding these complex issues. My experiences volunteering in local community organizations have exposed me to the systemic barriers that prevent equitable access to resources and opportunities. These insights have motivated me to explore ways in which technology can support efforts to create more equitable urban environments. One of the areas where I believe I can make a positive impact is through the application of technology to combat homelessness. I plan to develop innovative solutions that utilize data analytics to identify trends and patterns related to homelessness in urban areas. By analyzing data on housing availability, social services, and community resources, I aim to inform policymakers and service providers about effective interventions. This approach not only fosters a more informed decision-making process but also empowers communities to implement targeted strategies that address the root causes of homelessness. Additionally, I recognize the importance of promoting affordable housing in urban planning. As cities continue to grow, the demand for affordable housing options becomes increasingly urgent. I aspire to advocate for policies that prioritize the development of mixed-income housing and community land trusts, which can provide stability for low-income families while preserving the character of neighborhoods. My goal is to use technology to facilitate community engagement in the planning process, ensuring that the voices of residents are heard and considered in decision-making. Sustainability is another crucial aspect of my vision for urban development. I am particularly interested in exploring how technology can enhance sustainable practices within urban environments. For instance, I plan to investigate the role of smart technologies in optimizing energy consumption and reducing waste in housing developments. By promoting green building practices and sustainable urban design, we can create healthier living environments while minimizing our impact on the planet. My passion for these issues stems from a deep desire to create positive change in my community and beyond. I believe that everyone deserves access to safe and affordable housing, and that urban environments should foster inclusivity and resilience. The intersection of technology and urban planning presents a unique opportunity to drive meaningful change, and I am motivated to contribute my skills and knowledge to this effort. In conclusion, my background as a first-generation immigrant, combined with my passion for technology and commitment to social justice, drives my desire to make a positive impact in urban planning and economics. The game’s social aspect allows us to appreciate each other's talents and styles, leading to a diverse array of creations that we can all be proud of. Another reason building resonates with me is the connection it fosters with the game's environment. As I gather resources from the world around me, I develop a deeper appreciation for the biomes, landscapes, and creatures that populate Minecraft. This interaction with the environment enhances my gameplay experience and reinforces the idea that our creations are part of a larger world. It’s a beautiful reminder of the balance between creativity and nature, and how they can coexist harmoniously. In conclusion, my favorite aspect of Minecraft is the building and creativity it inspires. The game provides an unparalleled platform for self-expression, experimentation, and collaboration, making it a meaningful outlet for my artistic inclinations. Whether I’m constructing a simple home or embarking on a grand architectural project, the satisfaction of bringing my ideas to life within the game is a joy that keeps me returning to Minecraft time and time again. Through building, I not only create structures but also forge connections with friends and the vibrant world around me, making every block placed a step toward endless possibilities.

Finally, I would round out the team with Steve Harrington. Initially perceived as just the high school heartthrob, Steve has transformed into a brave and loyal ally. His protective instincts and experience fighting off Demogorgons have given him the skills necessary for combat. Steve’s "Mom" instincts make him the perfect candidate to ensure everyone stays safe and focused during the mission. His growth into a mature and courageous leader is impressive, and his willingness to put himself on the line for his friends demonstrates true heroism. Plus, who wouldn’t want Steve's epic hair and charming personality to lighten the mood while we face impending doom? SigaLa Education Scholarship
Hello, I am Shafia Faija. I immigrated to the United States from Bangladesh at the age of five. Currently, I am pursuing a degree in Computing and Security Technology, specializing in cybersecurity, at Drexel University. From a young age, I always knew I wanted to pursue a career in tech. My passion for this field comes from a desire to make a significant impact in the tech industry and to demonstrate that overcoming obstacles is possible, no matter one's background. Fortunately, I am passionate about something that also offers a financially stable future, which is important as being part of an underrepresented minority often involves financial challenges. Growing up, I dealt with bullying, strict expectations from my parents, and imposter syndrome. Despite these obstacles, I tried my best to stay strong, even when it was extremely rough. It was difficult for me to connect with people as I knew no one and couldn't connect with anyone on a deeper level since I was from the other side of the world. Despite negative experiences, I am grateful for them as they shaped me into who I am today. As an underrepresented minority and a woman in a male-dominated field, my goals have been shaped by the challenges and stereotypes I face. These experiences have fueled my determination to break barriers and inspire others. I am excited to share that I will be working as a software engineer at Comcast this upcoming fall and winter through my university's co-op program. This opportunity allows me to challenge stereotypes and pave the way for more women in STEM. Getting this offer for my first co-op was a moment of realization that all the all-nighters studying, stressing, crying, and energy drinks were worth it and that I can achieve anything as long as I set my mind to it. Despite my current scholarship, attending a private institution like Drexel University remains financially challenging. This scholarship would significantly alleviate the financial burden of tuition costs, allowing me to focus more on my studies and co-op experience. In addition to being a full-time student, even during the summer, as my university's co-op program doesn't provide breaks; I currently work part-time as a Print and Marketing Associate at Staples. Receiving this scholarship would not only help me achieve my educational and career goals, but also honor my parents, who sacrificed their opportunities to support my dreams. I am immensely grateful for the chance to pursue my ambitions and make a meaningful impact in the tech industry.

These efforts have not only transformed my relationship with my parents but have also sparked conversations among extended family members, encouraging them to reevaluate their attitudes toward mental health. Experiencing mental health challenges has provided me with a unique lens through which I view the world. It has unveiled the invisible battles that so many individuals face silently, highlighting the importance of empathy, understanding, and support. This understanding has expanded my worldview and ignited a passion for advocating for mental health awareness on a broader scale. Through volunteer work, engagement with mental health organizations, and sharing my own experiences, I strive to contribute to destigmatizing mental health and creating a more compassionate society. Minority Students x Stem Scholarship
What influenced me to dive deeper into tech was the realization that technology has the power to transform every aspect of our lives. From communication and education to healthcare and entertainment, technology is everywhere. The more I learned about technology, the more fascinated I became with its potential to solve some of the world's most significant problems and improve our lives. However, I believe the tech industry still has a long way to go to become more inclusive and accessible to all consumers. It is not enough to create new technologies that benefit only a few privileged individuals or groups. The tech industry must take proactive steps to ensure that its products and services are accessible and useful to all, regardless of their background or socio-economic status. One of the most exciting ways I see technology changing the future is through the advancement of artificial intelligence and machine learning. These technologies have the potential to automate repetitive tasks and increase efficiency in various industries, from manufacturing and transportation to healthcare and finance. This could lead to increased productivity and lower costs for consumers, ultimately improving people's quality of life. Another area where I see technology making a positive impact in education. With the rise of online learning platforms and educational software, students can access educational resources from anywhere in the world. This has the potential to make education more accessible and affordable, allowing people from all backgrounds to gain knowledge and skills that can improve their lives and communities. However, regarding what I would change or do to impact the tech industry, I believe that promoting diversity and inclusion should be a top priority. The tech industry needs to create a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion, where everyone feels welcome and valued, regardless of their background. This includes diversifying the workforce, creating inclusive products and services, and addressing issues of bias and discrimination. To achieve this, companies should prioritize diversity in their hiring practices, establish mentorship programs, and create safe spaces for underrepresented groups to share their experiences and ideas. Additionally, companies should invest in training and education programs to help their employees recognize and address issues of bias and discrimination. Regarding whether the tech industry has a social and moral obligation to be inclusive to all consumers, I believe the answer is yes. Technology has become an integral part of our lives, and it's essential that everyone has equal access and opportunities to benefit from it. Excluding certain groups of people from accessing or using technology can lead to further inequality and exacerbate existing disparities. Moreover, the tech industry has a significant impact on society and the world at large. As such, it should prioritize promoting social good and ethical practices, such as protecting user privacy and addressing concerns about the impact of technology on employment and the economy. In conclusion, I believe that technology has the power to change the world for the better, but we must ensure that it is inclusive and accessible to all. The tech industry must do its part to promote diversity and inclusion and design products and services that cater to a broad range of users. By doing so, we can harness the full potential of technology to create a brighter future for everyone.

I could also use my skills to help local businesses in the tourism industry by providing consulting services or marketing advice. Additionally, I plan to use my knowledge and passion for the travel industry to inspire and educate others through writing blogs and articles about responsible travel practices and sustainable tourism. Looking towards the future, my plans in the travel industry involve using my knowledge and skills to promote sustainable tourism practices. I believe that travel can have a positive impact on both the traveler and the communities they visit, but it is important to do so in a responsible and sustainable way. I hope to work with organizations and businesses that share this vision and to use my expertise to help them develop and implement sustainable tourism practices. This could include working with hotels and resorts to reduce their environmental impact or creating partnerships between local communities and tourism companies to ensure that the benefits of tourism are shared equitably. In addition, I plan to continue learning about the travel industry and staying up-to-date on the latest trends and innovations. I believe that the travel industry is constantly evolving, and it is important to stay informed in order to be a successful and responsible practitioner. I plan to attend industry conferences and events, as well as continue my education through certifications and advanced courses. Overall, I am committed to giving back to my community and using my skills and knowledge to make a positive impact in the travel industry. I believe that by working together, we can create a more sustainable and responsible travel industry that benefits both travelers and the communities they visit. I am excited about the possibilities of the future and am eager to contribute to this important field.

One of my goals within the field is to develop cutting-edge software applications and technologies that have a significant impact on society. I want to be a part of a team that creates software that makes people's lives easier and more efficient. Additionally, I hope to use my software engineering skills to help solve complex problems that have a positive impact on the world. Ultimately, my goal as a software engineer is to build software that is accessible to people from different backgrounds and abilities. I believe that technology has the power to connect people and make the world a better place, and I want to be a part of that movement. 4) Receiving this scholarship would mean the world to me. As a first-generation, low-income student, the financial burden of pursuing higher education can be overwhelming. I am Shafia Faija, a first-year student at Drexel University majoring in software engineering. I always knew I wanted to work in engineering specifically when I was a young immigrant and first-generation American. To be totally honest, my upbringing also played a role in the choice of vocation I intended to follow. Being a first-generation person, I had to pick a job path that I would enjoy and that would also provide security for my family and me in the future. This decision was greatly aided by my passion for technology, and gradually I worked my way through coding classes and projects that, despite having some minor defects, I liked doing. Coding is a notion I have investigated because it piqued my intellectual curiosity. I ask myself, "Has there ever been an original intellect behind the doors to generate these messages in a computer language that are known as codes? Humans today code to create new projects and improved technologies. How did they come up with all the functionalities that can be combined with the technology hidden behind the screen and the coding? I am aware that it was created by a specific person, but it still amazes me how a few keystrokes on a keyboard may result in new technological advancements. How did individuals use computers to create random characters and variables that could be translated into messages? If there are any hidden messages, I want to investigate this subject further by experimenting with other coding methods. Nobody is really sure what was going on in the minds of the sane people who made sophisticated advancements like this possible. All of it is a mystery. Diversity in the workplace is important to me because it is better to have personnel who are diverse in terms of race and ethnicity because they bring new perspectives, experiences, questions, and passions. Because scientific advancement depends on people learning about new things and examining current things in novel ways, diversity is crucial in the workplace. By involving people of diverse genders, ethnicities, backgrounds, religions, and sexual orientations in science, we may broaden our perspectives on study challenges and produce better results. Because engineers are problem solvers, the necessity for diverse engineering students cannot be stressed. In order to handle a wide range of problems, including those relating to transportation and education, engineers need a varied range of backgrounds and viewpoints, which calls for a diverse range of individuals.
