I've been in foster care for nearly four years now. I entered foster care July 11, 2018. I still remember the day everything happened and getting the news. Being in foster care has dramatically affected my academic success and it is not until now that I have realized how much it will affect my academic life after high school. As of 2022, I have attended six high schools. I am just now realizing that this has affected my GPA tremendously. I feel like if I didn't move around so much, and change schools so much, my GPA would be much higher. I have always been a star student and have always excelled in school. I had happened to be dealt a bad deck of cards that has affected my ability to reach my full potential.
My life experiences have shaped my perspective on education and my future dramatically. I feel like everything has come so fast now. I've had to be an adult for so long, but the responsibilities are becoming more and more adult oriented by the day. Even before I was placed in foster care, I was aware that I wanted to attend college. I knew that I would be the first person in immediate my family to attend college, and that was so exciting to me! I have dreamed of going to college for as long as I can remember. It has always been one of my most significant goals. I know if that as long as I have a college degree, I have the world in my hands.
My goals and visions for the future are quite simple in my eyes. Maybe because I've planned it for so long. I plan to go to major in psychology, and work as a mental health technician in an adolescent psychiatric hospital setting while I am attending college. Once I have completed college, I plan on working as a clinical therapist, in an adolescent psychiatric hospital setting. I have desires to work as a clinical therapist, but am and will keep my options open to other careers that psychology has to offer.
Receiving this scholarship will support my goals adequately by giving me the aid and motivation to pursue my dreams of majoring in psychology. Growing up feeling like I have had no one other than myself, this will definitely motivate me and give me much more reason to keep pushing and show everyone who has doubted me that I did it!
