To the Scholarship Committee, I believe that adversity is not just something to be endured but a powerful force that can inspire action, growth, and change. I faced one of my greatest adversities during my high school years when I lost my mother. While many of my peers were concerned with the typical challenges of teenage life, I was navigating the overwhelming pain of losing my biggest supporter and role model. The grief I carried made me feel different from everyone around me, yet it also shaped me into the person I am today: resilient, determined, and passionate about making a difference. During that time, I was forced to grow up faster than my peers. As I worked through my grief, I realized I had two choices: let this loss define me, or let it inspire me. I chose the latter. Instead of succumbing to the weight of the pain, I focused on transforming my sorrow into something meaningful. This drive led me to co-found a nonprofit organization, Adherence to Change - For Tina Slaughter, in memory of my mother. The nonprofit is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing counseling, education, and advocacy to individuals and families impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Through this initiative, I aimed to channel my emotions into positive action, creating a space where I could give back to the community while honoring her memory. The process of starting a nonprofit was not easy, but it was a labor of love. It required not only ambition and drive but also an understanding of how to lead, inspire, and impact others. As I worked to grow Adherence to Change, I found that my diverse mindset and my ability to empathize with others who were also facing challenges gave me a unique perspective. I realized that adversity had not only shaped my personal journey but had also given me the tools to help others overcome their own struggles. The experience of losing my mother and starting a nonprofit in her honor taught me the importance of resilience and purpose. I learned that adversity doesn’t have to be the end of your story—it can be the beginning of something powerful. If I were to offer advice to someone facing a similar situation, I would tell them to allow themselves to grieve but also to use that grief as fuel. Adversity will test your strength, but it can also uncover your deepest passions and give you the opportunity to create a lasting impact. The adversity I faced has motivated me to continue my journey of strengthening communities, whether through my nonprofit work or by pursuing a career in public service. I am committed to using my experiences to inspire and uplift others, turning pain into purpose, and making a positive difference wherever I go. Thank you for considering my application. Sincerely, Selena Slaughter
      Minecraft Forever Fan Scholarship
Dear Scholarship Committee, Thank you for taking the time to consider my application. I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to share a piece of my personal journey with you. Minecraft has been a significant part of my life, especially during my childhood. It was more than just a game for me—it was a bonding experience with my brother, whom I hold close to my heart. Together, we would spend hours immersed in the game, navigating its limitless possibilities, but there was always one particular aspect that stood out to us: survival mode. Survival mode in Minecraft became our favorite challenge. The thrill of starting with nothing and striving to overcome the game's most difficult obstacles captivated us both. We would often compete to see who could survive the longest or who could build the most formidable shelter with the limited resources we had. It wasn’t just about the game itself; it was about the camaraderie and the shared goal of making it through the toughest conditions the game could throw at us. The reason this aspect of Minecraft resonates so deeply with me is because it was a form of family bonding. My brother and I weren’t just playing a game; we were creating memories. Each session was an adventure filled with moments of triumph, laughter, and sometimes frustration. But more than anything, it was a time when we could connect, collaborate, and strengthen our relationship. These experiences taught me the value of teamwork, perseverance, and strategic thinking. The challenges we faced in the game mirrored those in real life, where planning, adaptability, and resilience are crucial for success. Beyond the blocks and pixels, Minecraft was a medium through which I learned important life lessons alongside someone I cared about deeply. In a world where digital interactions often replace face-to-face communication, Minecraft provides a unique platform for genuine connection. It reminded me that even in a virtual world, the bonds we create are real and meaningful. The memories of those survival mode challenges with my brother are something I will always cherish, as they symbolize not just a love for the game but a deep familial connection. We even enjoyed a Minecon together. Thank you once again for considering my application. The lessons I’ve learned and the memories I’ve created through Minecraft are a testament to the power of games in bringing people together, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share this aspect of my life with you. Sincerely, Selena Slaughter
      Audra Dominguez "Be Brave" Scholarship
Dear Scholarship Committee, Thank you for taking the time to consider my application. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to share my story and aspirations with you. Adversity is a force that challenges us in ways we often do not expect, shaping our character and resilience. For me, adversity manifested in a profoundly personal way when I was in high school. The sudden loss of my mother was a profound and painful experience that tested my mental and emotional strength. While many of my peers were navigating the typical challenges of adolescence, I was grappling with grief and the overwhelming sense of loss that comes with losing a parent. In the wake of my mother’s passing, I found myself at a crossroads. It was a time when I had to make a conscious decision: either succumb to the weight of my grief or find a way to channel that pain into something meaningful. I chose the latter, but it was not an easy path. I had to take the time to truly understand and process my emotions, which required immense inner strength. I learned that it was okay to feel vulnerable and that seeking help, whether through therapy or support groups, was a sign of strength, not weakness. This period of mental adversity taught me invaluable lessons in resilience and self-awareness. I realized that while I could not change the circumstances of my loss, I had the power to shape how I responded to it. I became more determined than ever to achieve my goals, not just for myself but as a way to honor my mother’s memory. Her belief in me and her unwavering support continues to be a driving force in my life. Pursuing a degree in Sociology at the University of Central Florida has been a transformative experience. It has allowed me to channel my personal experiences into a passion for helping others. Sociology has provided me with the tools to understand the complexities of human behavior and social structures, deepening my empathy and commitment to positively impacting my community. My studies have reinforced my belief that the challenges I have faced can be used as a source of strength and inspiration for others who are going through their own struggles. The adversity I endured has not only shaped who I am but has also fueled my desire to make a difference in the world. It has driven me to co-found a nonprofit organization, Adherence to Change, in memory of my mom. Through this organization, I aim to support others facing hardships, helping them find the resilience within themselves to overcome their challenges. As I continue this journey, my ultimate goal is to strengthen communities and educate people on being environmentally friendly. I also find I would love to write a book regarding losing a mother. As a way to connect with others who have gone through grief as a passion. I aspire to manage my own nonprofit and engage in public speaking. I use my experiences and knowledge to inspire others to overcome adversity and create positive change in their lives and communities. Thank you again for considering my application. I am confident that the lessons I have learned through my experiences will enable me to contribute meaningfully to my academic pursuits and the broader community. Sincerely, Selena Slaughter
      Team USA Fan Scholarship
Simone Biles has always been my favorite Team USA athlete. Growing up, I was deeply inspired by her, not just because she’s a phenomenal gymnast but because she’s a woman of color who has consistently shattered barriers in a sport where diversity is often lacking. Her journey as an athlete and as a person has been a powerful example for me, showing that perseverance and self-belief can lead to incredible achievements. One of the most impactful moments for me was during the most recent Olympics. Simone, despite the immense pressure and expectations placed on her, chose to step back and prioritize her mental health, bowing down to an opponent who outperformed her. In that moment, I realized that her greatness isn’t just in her medals and titles but in her humility, grace, and unwavering integrity. She demonstrated that true strength lies in acknowledging our limits and supporting others even in the face of personal challenges. This reinforced my admiration for her, not just as an athlete but as a role model whose character and resilience inspire me to pursue my own dreams with the same courage and determination. I love to see her being mainstream and a household name because of how inspirational she has become.
