It might sound silly, but one incredibly tense game of high school softball is what pushed me to choose the career I chose. During that game we didn't have a captain and we needed to win that game in order to move on to the next round. So, I stepped up into the leadership role which was out of my introverted comfort zone. I uploaded my team and we ended up winning. Then thinking about careers where I could do the same led me to the career I chose. Healthcare administrators essentially run medical clinics and hospitals. They do the behind the scenes work to make extreme decisions for healthcare facilities and institutions and directly deal with the policies and budgets so that they can create the best possible experience for their patients while also ensuring the safety of guests and staff. Healthcare administration is not a super common career such as a doctor but still they do so much to help people that they don't get enough recognition. I want to become a healthcare administrator because they do a great deal of work in helping health clinics run smoothly. Without them, the medical field wouldn’t be what it is today. I want to be able to help people in a different way by creating quality experiences, not just for patients but for doctors and other medical staff. My mom has supported me in every way possible. She sacrificed so much for me so that I had the ability to reach my educational goals and much more beyond that. My mom is my only parent, my biological father has never been in my life due to the consequences of his own actions towards my mom, brother, and myself. I know nothing of my father except for his name and why he’s not allowed to be in my life and after knowing the reasons, I’m thankful my mother went to such great lengths to protect me and my brother. As a single mother, my mom worked as hard and as much as she could to be able to not only afford my and my brother but to provide us with as much as she could growing up. When school got hard my mom would talk me through it and calm me down when I was stressing over a math problem I couldn’t do and thought I would never understand. I am also a first generation college student because my mother never went to college so when I needed extra help to pass a class my mom would wake up extra early and take me to school so I could get the help I needed. My mother also slept on the couch for over a year so that me and my brother could each have her own room and her small two bedroom trailer and so that I could have my own space to study and excel in my academics. When it came down to making my final decision for which university I would attend my mom supported me with whichever I chose. I ended up choosing the University of Las Vegas Nevada since I'm local and it would be much more affordable than the out of state university I really wanted to attend. I am beyond lucky I even get the chance to attend college unlike my incredible mom who didn’t have the chance to, so choosing UNLV instead of my dream college is a small price to pay if it means I will still get the amazing opportunity of higher education and the experiences it comes with. I know what it is like to not grow up with a lot of money so I want to establish a good career so that I can give my future kids a better childhood and life than I did and to also give back to my mother who sacrificed so much and gave me everything I needed to reach my educational goals.

If the healthcare system costs for lower and more people were able to afford it, more people would live longer, healthier lives. Something else that is often not brought to the surface is how much it actually costs to have a baby. Why should it cost between $15 to $20,000 to bring a child into the world when women for centuries before have done it for free. I am attending college to get a degree in healthcare administration and perhaps one day I can help the dispute that is the cost of healthcare.

My entire life I grew up playing sports. So, when I got into high school I played volleyball, basketball, and softball. Softball was by far my favorite and since I was a freshman I hoped that by the time I was a senior I was Captain. And when my senior year finally came, my coach announced he was not going to do captains. Naturally, I was a little crushed as I had put in so much blood sweat and tears, literally, into this team over the last 4 years. Since we didn't have any captains that year we didn't have an established leadership or anybody on the team who really took charge. In the beginning of the Season it wasn't much of a problem as the teams were playing or below our skill level. But then towards the middle of the season we played a team who was neck and neck with us and it was one we knew we had to beat if we wanted any chance at making it to regionals and then state. The game was a double header and so after a long seven Innings we lost the first game. That already caused a rift between the players on my team and we were hanging our heads low because if we didn't beat them the second game we weren't going to regionals. I'm usually pretty introverted but I was so passionate about the sport and I wanted nothing more than to go to regionals and state as we hadn’t in the last 4 years. So I stepped up. I started talking to girls who are beating themselves up and talking to girls who were beating each other up and explaining to them that if we didn't pull ourselves together and act like a team we were going to be done. I was our team's picture so when I was up on the mound I was talking and talking and talking and encouraging my teammates telling them that if we really wanted to we could do this. We could win. Slowly after each play of the game I could see my teammates holding their heads up higher and higher and trying harder and harder. The first game, we were pretty much blown out of the water but the second game went a total of nine innings because we refused to back down as we had before. And as we were tied in the 9th inning one perfect play made by my teammates won us the game. We were all so ecstatic and so happy that we were making it onto the next round. Now, I am not by any means saying I'm the reason we won that game, but if nobody had stepped up to encourage us, we wouldn't have won. Then from the rest of the season my team was like a whole new team. We were encouraging each other and we were happy and uplifted. As I said before, I am usually more introverted but after stepping up for my team, it made me realize I wanted to step up even more. That is why I am choosing to go into healthcare administration and to run a hospital and a team of medical workers who just want to do better for the world.

Being a first-generation college student and a Mexican-American college student are both hard. However, I would argue that being both is even harder. Those of us who have had to overcome any type of adversity understand how important it is to make the future better for those who are in the same or similar situations. I am passionate about being a first-generation, Mexican-American college graduate because becoming successful means I have overcome the adversity that my people face and have faced for centuries. And, being a first generation and Mexican-American college student my family has had to sacrifice a lot for me to be where I am today. But they have also made me who I am today. My family consists of my mother, older brother, and myself. My biological father has never been in my life and never will be due to the consequences of his own actions towards my mother. However, my father is the reason I am half Mexican and in spite of my situation my mother has done everything she can to bring that half of my culture into my life. My mother was put in a very hard position emotionally, physically, and financially after she left my father to better my life and my brothers. Now, I want to go to college but my family doesn't have the money. So, I am passionate about my college career because I want to achieve things my family hasn't been able to. I want to show people that just because you come from a different background doesn't mean you can't rise up to the same level as them. My mom didn't go to college, and my father didn't either, which left my mom to settle for a mediocre paying job. I plan to get a good degree so that I can build a good career for myself and eventually give back to my mother. Being a single mother has been hard for her to get both of her kids on their feet without a stable foundation to start on and while my brother works part time on a farm now, I have dreamed of going to college for as long as I can remember. In high school I strived to get good grades, be in the top 10% of my class, and get the highest gpa I could. And I did. Now, I want to take that same educational passion and use it at a higher level. Not only would I be given the ability to help people locally and at whatever hospital or medical clinic I get employed at, but I could travel the world a help less fortunate people put together healthcare systems that advance their communities. It's heartbreaking when something goes wrong in the healthcare world or when something fails. I want to help stray away from failure and walk an incredible path towards success. I want to help people any way I can, and this is the way I believe I will do it. Sometimes you cannot help getting stuck in a poor situation but healthcare providers are there to help you out, so I want to do just that.

Being half Hispanic has shaped my mindset and my goals in several ways. First, I am Hispanic and of Mexican descent. I feel special to be part of the Hispanic community. Being a mixed Hispanic, I get to see life from two different sides, American and Mexican.I get my half Hispanic side from my biological father, although he isn't and has never been in the picture. Despite this, my mom has done her best to bring my Hispanic culture into my life. Still, I am beyond proud to be Hispanic and I even got to wear a special Hispanic medallion at my high school graduation. Being a first generation college student and Hispanic sure has its set backs such as the lack of confidence because we don't get the same opportunities and we have to work harder to be successful. I also don't have a family member who went to college to show me the ropes and navigating this process alone is incredibly difficult. So, in the end, I might not get the same opportunities as some other kids but I am still determined to accomplish my goals and become successful. My grandpa never went to college. In fact, straight after he graduated high school he went into a truck drivers company to support his family and then served 30+ years in the local teamsters union. He expressed how proud of me he is all the time and he wants nothing more then for me to peruse higher education so I can create a better life for my family and I. I grew up in a very small town with roughly 1000 people. My school was k-12 with less than 300 students. This brought many unique experiences but also took away some experiences I would have had in a bigger town and at a bigger school.Also going to a small school, we missed out on some classes many larger schools have such as woodwork shops, mechanical classes, and home economics. Those are all classes I think would have been beneficial for me in the future.Larger schools have more opportunities for funding and sponsors so going to a small school we were decently underfunded. Our school building was old and we didn't have all of the latest technology, books, labs, and we tried but we were never able to put on the same big events that larger schools could.Still, these issues will help push me in college because I will have so many more resources to help guide me that I didn't have before and I will finally be able to reach and push past my limits. Jose Prado was a Hispanic, first generation college student so he very well knew the struggles of going to college in his position. Because of this his memorial scholarship is used to help students such as myself become successful just as he did. I find comfort in knowing that if he did it, there is a chance I can too. If I one-day had a scholarship I would make it for Hispanic first generation colleges students who don't have the full support of both parents. I know how hard it is to one be Hispanic, two first generation, and 3 to not have a parent in my life to support me so I would want to help students just like me. College holds many opportunities for students to further their education, achieve their career goals, and give them important life experiences. With a college degree, I can make a better life and finally give back to my mom who gave me all she could.

Adversity is something that everybody goes through, just in different ways. Growing up I didn't realize how much adversity I have actually overcome. I grew up in a very small town and honestly, a very poor area. My family consists of my single mother, my older brother, and myself. So, compared to the picture perfect American Family mine was what some people would call broken. My father has never been in my life and I know very little about him except for why he's not in my life and his name. Fathers are supposed to be in your life because they help you grow into who you become but because of what he had done I am beyond thankful my mother removed him from my life and raised me and my brother herself. I am also half Hispanic which I get from my father so I always felt like I was missing a huge piece of my culture because I didn't have him to bring it to me.So not only did I have a “ broken family” but many people speculated it was because I was Hispanic. Why? Because it was much more common for white families to be perfect and more common for hispanic or mixed families to not be. So, not only do I not have the full parenting system but I also live in a mobile home which some might deem not a real home even though my mother has made it one. Outsiders might look at my family and say it's broken which in turn makes me also feel like it is. I remember making friends in middle school and being embarrassed to invite them over to my house because my family wasn't perfect like theirs. I didn't have a full family, I didn't live in a nice house, and I didn't have access to large pools right in my backyard. For a long time I was scared that people would judge me and so I refrained from being broke and letting them see what my home life was like. My mom did her very best to raise me and my brother right and worked so hard to give us all we needed but I still didn't have what others had. Though, now looking back on it I am beyond grateful for everything I do have because I do realize that there are some who don't have as much as I do. It wasn't until I really opened up to my friends about how I felt that I realized what I was going through was adversity.

After High School I plan on attending the University of Las Vegas Nevada, UNLV, and get my bachelor's in healthcare management. During my time at UNLV I want to get an internship at a hospital or medical clinic so that way when I graduate I can apply for a job as a medical and health services manager with a couple of years of experience under my belt. I want to become a medical and health service manager, also known as healthcare administrators, because they do a great deal of work in helping health clinics run smoothly. Without them, the medical field wouldn’t be what it is today. Healthcare administrators are kind of like the cameraman for a movie, they aren’t directly in the spotlight but still necessary to make the film. I want to be able to help people in a different way by creating quality experiences, not hust for patients but for doctors and other medical staff. Having a good experience and feeling welcome when you are in the hospital or at a private clinic greatly impact how you feel at appointments, how you feel when getting treatments, and how you feel while recovering. I want people to have the best experiences possible because already having to deal with healthcare can sometimes be stressful. By becoming a healthcare administrator I can help my community feel confident in the healthcare system. Healthcare and the medical field are some of the most important things in society and have confidence in those systems is crucial to keeping a successful society. Everyday millions of people seek help in these systems and by going to college, getting my degree, and becoming a healthcare administrator, I can help those people. Booktok has gained lots of influence over the last couple of years and influenced many lives including my own. When I was young, I loved reading but as I started to get older I lost that love somewhere along the way until I stumbled on a book video about this series called Shatter Me on Tik Tok. I decided to puck up that book and give it a read and little did I know that books would change my life forever. I found my live for reading again and didn't stop and I don't plan to ever again. To this day, the Shatter Me series is still one of my favorites. I love how impactful the story was and the show of how powerful a young women like Juliette, the female main character, was. It was inspirational and so exciting to read, I was hooked the whole way through. The series' genres are dystopian romance and I loved the elements of them both. I am a sucker for dystopian novels as The Hunger Games was also one of my favorite series. I love how the characters fought to survive and overthrow the reestablishing together. These books also have a beautiful representation of found family. Kenji is a unique and one of a kind side character for sure! I dream of one day having the most Bookish bookshelf ever filled with all of my favorite books, candles, book fan art, signs, many book nick nacs, and so many fairy lights. I want to have an entire personal library with a big cozy chair and a warm fireplace, although maybe an electric one in favor of my precious books. Some of my must-have titles include, of course, the Shatter Me series, The Hunger Games, The Inherentence Games, The Folk of Heir trilogy, Better Than The Movies, Fourth Wing and Iron Flame, The Selection Series, and The Summer I Turned Pretty. Books like these have brought millions of book lovers together in a welcoming community where we can all share our live for reading and converse about different books. I send my best friend who also loves reading books from book tok multiple times a day which I personally feel bring us closer. Books and literature themselves are such powerful tools and once you unlock the power of reading you open yourself up to a whole new world. Something I also love so much is the millions of different worlds you get to experience while reading in the millions of different books and booktok has made those worlds more accessible to those who have such a love for the beautiful thing that is reading.

Going to such a small school the teachers ans staff knew their students, myself included, on a new personal level. I also had the majority of the same teachers through all of my years in school. Also going to a small school, we missed out on some classes many larger schools have such as woodwork shops, mechanical classes, and home economics. Those are all classes I think would have been beneficial for me in the future. My small school did provide a comforting community due to the fact that the teachers and students have all known each other for many years. Larger schools have more opportunities for funding and sponsors so going to a small school we were decently underfunded. Our school building was old and we didn't have all of the latest technology, books, labs, and we tried but we were never able to put on the same big events that larger schools could. Our biggest events of the year, homecoming and prom, were always in our small run down theater so only about 30 people would show up. Our pep rallies we not very preppy either no matter how hard our student council, myself included, tried. I would be lying if I said I didn't feel like I missed out on some of the traditional high school experiences but nevertheless, I am beyond grateful for the ones I did experience and the people who gave those experiences to me. My plan for the future is to get my bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration. I also plan to get an internship while I am doing my studies so right after I graduate I will have the experience to go straight into work at a nice medical clinic or hospital where I can work to improve the quality of the medical field. As for my financial circumstances, I come from a family consisting of my mother, my brother and me. My biological father was never in my life for many reasons. My mom works at Creech Air Force base in Indian Springs and makes around $55,000 a year. My mom never went to college and my brother didn't either. I've dreamed about going to college for years and I know in my heart that is something I want to pursue. I've applied for many scholarships but haven't recieved any yet. This scholarship would help me afford the cost of college and achieve my dreams while also allowing me to give back to my incredible mother who has sacrificed so much for my brother and I.
