Bio

Hello! I am Scarlett Guzman, a first-generation high school graduate currently at UCLA majoring in Political Science with a Pre-Law focus. As a full-time student, I am juggling coursework alongside a part-time job to support myself. With a high 4.5 GPA, ranking in the top 5% of my class, I'm a strong contender for scholarships due to my academic achievements, leadership, and commitment to helping others. However, pursuing my degree as a low-income Hispanic student with a single parent is difficult and has made me acutely aware of the financial challenges that can hinder access to opportunities. Aiming to become a family lawyer, I intend to use my personal experience with family turmoil to make a difference in the lives of children affected by challenging custody battles. I want to help in the family courts and make a difference for children affected by decisions that are not their fault and out of their control. My goal is to advocate for children's rights, amplify their voices, and ensure their well-being during family court processes. I aspire to empower them to overcome adversity and flourish. Education is a transformative force that transcends socioeconomic limitations, and I believe that investing in individuals like me will foster a brighter future for my family and my community. Being a member of Bold.org's scholarship community is truly an honor. Any support you provide as I strive to realize my dreams is greatly appreciated. Thank you for considering my journey.

Fall Favs: A Starbucks Stan Scholarship
The Chai Tea Latte from Starbucks holds a treasured place in my heart, not merely for its exquisite blend of spices and comforting warmth, but for the integral role it plays in my own fall narrative. This cherished beverage is woven into the tapestry of my memories, symbolizing a profound connection to family and inspiring me on my path toward higher education. My love for the Chai Tea Latte was kindled by my loving older cousin, whom I would eagerly visit every summer in Las Vegas. She worked at Starbucks as part of her journey to fund her online education at Arizona State University. Her unwavering commitment to her education was inspiring, and it was through her hard work at Starbucks that she could make her dreams of a college degree a reality. During those memorable summer visits, Starbucks became the backdrop to our time together. I watched as my cousin tirelessly worked, brewing coffee, serving pastries, and preparing those iconic Chai Tea Lattes. One afternoon, she surprised me with a Chai Tea Latte, introducing me to its exquisite flavors. This seemingly small gesture left an indelible mark on my heart, as it was a symbol of the warmth and love that defined our bond. The Chai Tea Latte quickly became more than just a beverage; it evolved into a source of comfort and connection between us. Whenever I visited, my cousin would bring home an assortment of Starbucks treats, always including the Chai Tea Latte, as a tangible reminder of our special connection. She recognized that this warm and aromatic drink had a unique ability to uplift my spirits, and whenever she sensed that I was feeling down, she would bring one home after her shift, a comforting gesture that meant the world to me. Our connection ran far deeper than shared drinks and Starbucks runs. Both of us had grown up with single fathers and were only children, but within each other, we found a sisterly bond that filled our lives with love and unwavering support. Through life's ups and downs, the Chai Tea Latte became a symbol of our enduring connection, a testament to the shared experiences that drew us even closer. As we sipped our Chai Tea Lattes, we shared our dreams, aspirations, and the challenges we faced as young women navigating the complexities of the world. My cousin's determination to fund her education while working tirelessly served as a constant source of inspiration, motivating me to pursue my own ambitions with unyielding dedication. So, when I think of the Chai Tea Latte from Starbucks, it’s not just a fall-inspired beverage; it becomes a poignant reminder of the love, support, and shared moments that have profoundly influenced my journey. It serves as a symbol of the family bonds that overcome distance and circumstance, a testament to the sisterly connection I hold dear with my cousin, and a reflection of the warmth of her heart, poured into every cup of Chai Tea Latte she brings home.
    McClendon Leadership Award
Leadership is a multifaceted concept deeply rooted in personal growth, community enrichment, and the art of fostering connections among diverse individuals. It transcends titles and positions of authority; it's about harnessing one's strengths to drive positive change. My journey toward understanding and embodying leadership has been profoundly influenced by my father's wisdom: "Embrace your strengths to discover your passions and your identity." This guidance has been instrumental in shaping my academic pursuits and my unwavering commitment to leadership roles aligned with my aspiration to ignite positive change. A prime example of my commitment to leadership is my extensive eight-year involvement with the Student Council. I assumed roles including Class President, Publicist, Reporter, Commissioner of Elections, and Executive Secretary. These positions have transcended mere titles; they have served as platforms for fostering camaraderie, amplifying student voices, and creating memorable experiences that define our high school years. Genuine leadership forges connections with diverse peers, honing skills that bridge different perspectives and demands substantial time and effort. My investment in leadership is evident in the over 200 hours I dedicate each semester. For instance, I individually organized two school blood drives in collaboration with the American Red Cross, directly contributing to saving lives. Additionally, I initiated the MIND Program on campus and even created a new class for students after obtaining a Certificate of Mental Health Training. My leadership contributions extend to various other organizations, such as the National Honor Society, the California Scholarship Federation President, Science National Honor Society Vice President, Junior State of America Vice President, and roles such as Freshman Mentor and Orientation Leader, and Editor of Key Club. In each, I have focused on leadership that aligns with my ambition to foster a cohesive and compassionate environment. This has included initiatives like inviting scientists as guest speakers to spark STEM interest, participating in Thanksgiving Food Drives at local churches, writing articles in the newspaper to highlight service acts, and teaching effective debating techniques and public speaking on societal issues. Furthermore, I conducted independent scientific research on water surface tension and pH to support the Waterwise Community Center and Chino Basin Water Conservation District in their efforts to conserve water in San Bernardino. Throughout my leadership journey, a constant thread has been my unwavering ambition. This ambition has fueled my engagement in activities that bring tangible benefits to my community, further enriching my understanding of leadership and its impact on personal growth and community well-being. This ambition has also earned me recognition, such as the National Hispanic Recognition Award from College Board. It has also resulted in nominations for prestigious conferences and scholarships, including the National Student Leadership Conference, Pepperdine Youth Citizenship Seminar, and the Posse Scholarship Foundation. At my core, I am a leader dedicated to nurturing an environment where every voice is recognized and valued. My leadership journey transcends titles; it revolves around fostering a unified community that thrives on shared experiences and aspirations. As I embark on my journey as a Political Science major at UCLA this fall, my commitment to extending my leadership influence remains unwavering. Through active engagement in student organizations and campus initiatives, my aspiration is not only to promote inclusivity but also to inspire a new generation of leaders who will champion positive change and amplify diverse perspectives. Through serving others, taking risks, and leveraging my strengths, I have gained immeasurably in terms of personal growth and identity. My ambition and passion for inclusivity continue to guide me toward a future where leadership resonates with compassion, unity, and transformative change.

The essence of assisting others has served as a guiding light on my academic journey, a wisdom imparted by my father's words: "Discover your passions and identity by embracing your strengths." This principle has firmly rooted within me an unwavering dedication to roles that not only catalyze positive change but also foster harmony among diverse viewpoints within communities. Along this path, I've come to grasp the profound fulfillment and purpose that lie in serving others and nurturing a positive impact on the community. This philosophy has ignited a steadfast commitment to roles that catalyze positive transformation and harmonize varied perspectives. With over 200 hours invested per semester, I've actively nurtured camaraderie, amplified student voices, and crafted memorable high school experiences. In this immersive engagement, I've witnessed firsthand how helping others creates a sense of unity and shared purpose. The reach of this commitment to community enrichment extends beyond personal growth. Activities such as individually running blood drives in collaboration with the American Red Cross, spearheading the MIND Program to address mental health challenges, and active participation in volunteer organizations underscore the tangible impact of contributing to the betterment of others. My commitment to service is mirrored within my involvement in the National Honor Society, California Scholarship Federation, Science National Honor Society, Junior State of America, Key Club, and my dedicated role as an Orientation Leader. Through these diverse avenues, I've come to recognize the pivotal importance of forging connections and nurturing a sense of belonging. Through scientific research and community initiatives, it's clear that collaborative problem-solving yields sustainable solutions that benefit all. This realization underscores the inherent value of aiding others as a means to construct robust and interconnected communities. These experiences distinctly illustrate that aiding others transcends mere improvements in their lives; it ignites a chain reaction of positive change that ripples throughout the entire community. Furthermore, my journey has illuminated that aiding others isn't just about altruism; it's a mutually enriching journey. By embracing diverse perspectives and forging connections, I've gained insights into my own identity and passions. This symbiotic exchange underscores the profound truth that supporting others is a transformative voyage that nurtures personal growth while fostering a positive impact on the lives of those around us. At the heart of this philosophy lies a conviction that each individual's strengths hold the power to unveil passions and shape their identity. In its essence, the significance of aiding others lies in its ability to foster a more compassionate, cohesive, and thriving community. In its essence, aiding others isn't merely an option; it's a vital expression of our shared humanity.
    I Can Do Anything Scholarship
Arising from the depths of a low-income, first-gen woman of color’s journey, raised by a single parent grappling with sobriety, I'm forging a path at UCLA using my experiences with familial challenges to craft a destiny as a family lawyer who empowers children in custody battles, champions resilience through adversity, amplifies the voices of marginalized communities, all while aspiring to be the mother I yearned for, igniting a legacy where my children are propelled to chase their aspirations with an unwavering commitment to education and unyielding ambition, making this scholarship a beacon illuminating the path toward this journey.
    Bright Lights Scholarship
As the first light of day touches the horizon, revealing a world full of different possibilities, I find myself at the crossroads of where I come from and where I want to go. My journey marked by academic milestones and community engagement, serves as a canvas where my Hispanic heritage intricately weaves itself into every stroke. Growing up, I grappled with profound issues at home, shaped by the throes of my parents' drug addiction. In 2009, the court granted my father full custody since my mother hid me from my father for months and subjected the two of us to live in dangerous conditions. This absence of a mother, combined with a single-parent father struggling for sobriety and presence, nurtured insecurities that once plagued my life. As a first-generation high school graduate, I'm intimately familiar with the hurdles faced by underrepresented individuals. My journey mirrors my father's sacrifices, propelling me toward opportunities he once couldn't grasp. Challenges have sculpted my commitment, fueled my determination, and enriched my gratitude for every opportunity. Though financial shadows have crossed my path, ambition remains my compass, guiding me toward every opportunity. In fact, the upcoming chapter of my life, a pre-law trajectory in Political Science at UCLA, is a testament to my steadfast belief that education holds the key to transcending constraints. Our worth isn't determined by our circumstances; self-love transcends income and background. As Hispanics, our culture's richness in heritage, history, and values is our source of strength. It's a testament to our community's resilience, flourishing even when faced with adversity and injustice. Since my early years, I learned I may not have created these problems growing up, but I am responsible for the solution. My experiences have illuminated a path, propelling me toward higher education. With aspirations to become a family lawyer, I'm eager to use my intimate familiarity with familial challenges and custody disputes. My dream is to bring about change within family courts and lend a voice to children entangled in decisions that are not their fault and beyond their control. I will ensure children emerge from family court systems not as victims of circumstance, but as empowered individuals ready to flourish against all odds. My mission transcends legal practice; it encompasses reform, guidance, and empowerment. I embrace my past as an essential part of my journey, propelling me towards a future where my aspirations are fulfilled and my family's pride is well-deserved. Receiving Bright Light Scholarship would be an invaluable step toward my higher education. With achieving a 4.3 GPA and ranking in the top 6% of my class, I am steadfast in my pursuit of success. However, the reality is that access to higher education remains a challenge for individuals from backgrounds like mine. Growing up in a low-income, first-generation, single-parent household as a woman of color has made me acutely aware of the financial challenges that can hinder access to opportunities. This scholarship would serve as a lifeline, breaking down barriers and granting me the chance to unlock my potential. Pursuing my education is not just about my personal aspirations but also about contributing to a more equitable society. The support from this scholarship would alleviate the financial strain and enable me to focus wholeheartedly on the academic and personal growth opportunities that UCLA offers. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship, and I am committed to making the most of it to achieve my dreams and give back to those who have supported me along the way.

    Curtis Holloway Memorial Scholarship
As a young child, I grappled with profound issues at home due to my parents' drug addiction. In 2009, my father sought full custody after my mother hid me from him for months and subjected the two of us to live in dangerous conditions. The court granted her visitation rights, but she quickly lost them. This absence of a mother and the struggles of my single-parent father nurtured insecurities that once plagued me. It was during these times that my grandmother, Beatrice, emerged as a pillar of strength, stepping in to raise me. Beatrice, my grandmother, has embodied a motherly figure and unwavering support. Amid adversities, she stressed education as my ticket to overcome my circumstances. This fueled my ambition and desire to succeed. My grandma taught me that I am not defined by my parents' choices and that their struggles are not my burden to bear. I could rise above my circumstances, transforming pain and experiences into positive change. She instilled that regardless of our income, family, environment, or personal circumstances our self-love tells us what we deserve. To improve our lives, we must enhance our self-love and mentality. Having to cope with my parents' addiction from a young age, has given me the fortitude I need to conquer any challenge that comes my way. This separates me from a statistic because despite the grief both my parents' addictions have brought upon me, I harnessed their trials to fuel my determination to forge a different path. My father is an extremely compassionate and supportive dad, especially in those wonderful times when he is sober, yet my grandmother reminds him to address his addiction individually as I look to my future. She encourages me to exceed his accomplishments. A first-generation high school graduate, I'm set to attend UCLA majoring in Political Science on a Pre-Law track. In my childhood, I yearned for a better life and my grandmother taught me to embrace self-love and be the change. I may not have created these problems growing up, but I am responsible for the solution. Inspired by her and driven by my experiences, I aspire to become a family lawyer utilizing my personal experience of coping with family difficulties and child custody. I aim to ensure these children emerge from family court systems not as victims but as empowered individuals ready to flourish against all odds. My grandmother's lessons cemented my commitment to breaking the cycle of dysfunction and nurturing positive change for those facing similar circumstances. But, I also dream of being a nurturing mother figure to my children, imparting the ambition and resilience my grandmother bestowed upon me. In the rich tapestry of my life, a thread of unwavering support shines brighter than adversity, woven by my grandmother’s loving hands. She filled the void left by my parents' struggles, illuminating a path I never deemed possible. Her lessons extend beyond the walls of any classroom, teaching that life's scars need not define us. The legacy of my grandmother's love and guidance remains etched in my heart. Just as she held my hand through the darkest moments, I aspire to hold the hands of others, leading them toward a brighter future. Her support transcends my educational endeavors, encapsulating the profound life lessons she has imparted. With her as my inspiration, I’m ready to embark on this journey, fortified by her love, guided by her wisdom, and fueled by my determination.
Harry Potter and the Sorting Hat Scholarship
In the captivating realm of Hogwarts, where courage, wit, loyalty, and ambition reign supreme, my journey unquestionably finds its home within Hufflepuff. As a young child, I grappled with profound issues at home, shaped by the throes of my parents' drug addiction. In 2009, my father took my mother to court for full custody of me after she hid me from him for months and subjected the two of us to live in dangerous conditions. The court granted her visitation rights, but she quickly lost them. This absence of a mother figure, coupled with my single-parent father's battle with sobriety, nurtured insecurities that once cast shadows over my life, leading my grandmother to help step in and raise me. Just as Hufflepuff values loyalty and dedication, I stood by my family, especially my grandmother, who emerged as my guiding light and unwavering pillar of support. My grandmother, a motherly figure, emphasizes education’s importance and forging my own path. She reminds me that my father’s choices are not my responsibility. His ongoing drug use inevitably forced me to mature quickly and assume responsibilities at an early age most children shouldn't. The nurturing environment inherent to Hufflepuff, where empathy and inclusivity flourish, resonates deeply with my story. My experiences have forged an understanding of others' pain and struggles. Just as Hufflepuffs value kindness and empathy, I harnessed my own past as a wellspring of strength for positive change.
