Bio

As a motivated and proficient student, I am excited to share my background and ambitions with you! Throughout my academic career, I remained committed to achieving excellence in my studies. I challenged myself and sought dual enrollment at WSU Tech and Newman University, concluding with a 3.6 overall GPA and a composite ACT of 28. In addition to my academic success, I have a natural desire to help my community. I often volunteer at organizations across Wichita (more about that below) and utilize my knack for communication to improve the lives of those around me. Looking at the future, I plan to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Psychology at Butler Community College. I intend to carry the skills learned into Human Resources or Psychologist field. Thank you for the opportunity to share my passions with you!

    Deena Collins Memorial Scholarship
From the streets of Wichita to the outskirts where my family made a thirty-minute drive for mental health services, my journey in psychology began with the realization of the challenges faced by rural communities. As a freshman at Butler Community College with a 3.9 GPA, I am committed to transforming personal experiences into a meaningful contribution to mental health advocacy. This commitment, inspired by strong women like Deena Collins, fuels my aspiration to make a positive impact on the lives of women in rural areas. Growing up in Wichita, my family's experience mirrored that of many others—limited access to quality mental health services. My mother, a resilient woman and mother of four, silently battled severe depression for years, maintaining a brave face for the sake of her children. Witnessing her struggles ignited a passion within me to create a safe space for women, specifically mothers, where they can share their feelings without judgment. As I navigate my academic journey, majoring in Psychology, my goal is not merely to obtain a degree but to address the specific challenges faced by rural communities. My plan involves working in Human Resources and eventually opening a clinical psychology practice with a focus on providing accessible mental health services to women in these areas. With my sister, who is on the path to becoming a family and marriage therapist, we envision opening our practice strategically closer to the outskirts of Wichita and towards the Maize area. This strategic placement is designed to bridge the existing gaps in mental health services, ensuring convenient access for individuals in rural communities, like our family. Having lived closer to the outskirts, my family's journey emphasized the critical need for localized resources, especially in areas where transportation can be a barrier to seeking help. By establishing our practices closer to rural areas, we aim to make mental health services more accessible, eliminating barriers for those in need. Our commitment extends beyond clinical settings. In addition to our professional endeavors, my sister and I plan to actively engage with volunteering organizations, offering our time and expertise to support the well-being of these communities. We recognize the importance of a holistic approach to mental health, addressing not only clinical needs but also fostering community connections and resilience. In conclusion, my personal and academic journey has instilled in me a profound desire to make a positive impact on the mental health of rural areas. Inspired by Deena Collins's legacy, I am committed to breaking down barriers and providing accessible mental health services. By pursuing a career in clinical psychology, working in Human Resources, and opening a practice with my sister, I aim to empower women to find their voice, share their experiences, and build a resilient and supportive community. As my journey unfolds, I carry with me the passions and strength of Deena Collins and those alike, embracing the opportunity to transform personal experiences into a beacon of hope for women.
    Mind, Body, & Soul Scholarship
College is an adventure that holds countless opportunities for me. As I embark on this journey, what excites me the most is the personal growth that I will experience. It's not just about textbooks and lectures; college is a transformative experience that shapes not only our minds but also our bodies and souls. I know that I will face many challenges while in college, as it can be demanding both mentally and physically. That's why I am determined to prioritize self-care and establish healthy habits from the very beginning. I believe in finding a balance between my mind, body, and soul because they are interconnected. For one to thrive, all three must be well-nurtured. For me, maintaining a healthy mind starts with a consistent schedule. I thrive when I have a clear timeline for sleep, tasks, and people. Having a plan gives my mind ease. The most beneficial aspect of my schedule is ensuring that I get a healthy amount of sleep. Research shows that young adults need 8-10 hours of sleep per night. Women, in particular, need 9+ hours of sleep to maintain a healthy hormonal balance. I make it a priority to be in bed no later than 11 pm and wake up at 8 am each day. Since incorporating this healthy sleep routine into my schedule, I have noticed a significant difference in my mood. I feel motivated and ready to accomplish my goals, allowing me to perform to the best of my ability. Within the schedule I create for myself, I leave time to care for my body. Finding time for exercise and maintaining a well-balanced nutrition can be challenging, especially in college. I have learned that starting small is the best way to begin. For instance, I have found that exercise can be incorporated into my daily life in various ways. Instead of driving, I choose to walk to nearby locations. During a night out with friends, we dance and stroll to locations. Recently, I have also started my fitness journey at the gym. Four days a week, I spend an hour targeting different parts of my body, and this routine has made a positive impact on my mental and physical well-being. Alongside exercise, I believe that eating a balanced meal is essential for the health of my body. This includes consuming lean protein, maintaining my intake of carbohydrates, and drinking more water. These choices have allowed my body to notice the positive results from my exercise routine, ultimately leading me to a happier and healthier lifestyle. Although I appreciate having a schedule, I also value having time to indulge in activities that bring me joy and nourish my soul. I prioritize these moments because they contribute to my overall well-being. Some days, it's about spending quality time with friends, sharing laughter and creating memories. Other days, it's about finding solace in reading a book and enjoying moments of silence. Throughout my journey of fitness and health, I have come to realize that doing what you love is just as essential as following a structured routine. Whether it's pursuing goals privately or sharing achievements with loved ones, these experiences have brought me a deep sense of fulfillment. To overcome the challenges that college presents, it is essential to find a healthy balance between the mind, body, and soul.
