My name is Savannah and I am a senior at Independence High School in San Jose, California. My family has always encouraged me to attend college when I turned 18 years old. Currently, I am 17 years old and graduating high school soon. My mother and grandmother remind me every day that they care for my education. They remind me that they are proud of me for working hard towards my goals. I use this motivation from my family to pursue a higher education that will help me positively impact all kinds of people. First, I want to attend college and medical school to pursue my dream of becoming a pharmacist. I am interested in biology, particularly molecular biology. Molecular biology helps us understand the disease genes and their molecular structure, which is required to understand what is needed to fight those diseases. To treat diseases and infections, we must understand how drugs affect the living organisms inside our bodies. It truly excites me to learn about the fundamentals of living organisms and how the molecules in our bodies interact. I love to learn more about how our genes function and what happens inside my body. I hope that one day, in the future, I will be able to become proficient in my interests and graduate college with a bachelor's degree in biology. Subsequently, after getting a biology degree, I plan on applying to pharmacy school. I will become a pharmacist after completing a pharmacy program and passing the NAPLEX exam. I want to impact the world by ensuring that the medication is safe to be distributed to those in need. I believe that safety should be a major concern in health care. People who express a need for medication should feel that their prescriptions are safe to consume and handled properly. As the population grows, we will need more people in health care to research, develop, and distribute medication. Pharmacology has always been an interest of mine. Ever since I was exposed to medication at a young age, I became very interested in learning about what it was. It started when I noticed many orange and white bottles filled with small capsule-shaped things in different colors all over my grandmother's house. She told me that they were bottles of medicine that were given to her for her health. I learned that she was dealing with various health issues because of her elderly age. I found it interesting when she told me that she needed to take these pills to help her get through the day. However, it touched me to hear those words from her because I imagined there were people like my grandmother all over the world who rely on medication as well. I realized how important medication is, especially for the elderly, and it became one of my many motives to pursue a career in STEM. I want to help others by becoming a pharmacist and providing safe, cost-efficient medicine for those in need.
