I am currently a senior nursing student, of Bachelor of Science degree. I have previous healthcare experience as a certified medical assistant. I have always wanted to become a registered nurse but being from a first generation family, becoming a young mother and needing to maintain a job, the odds were against me. Now, I am highly motivated to collaborate and become an Oncology registered nurse. As a mother of two boys I am eager to obtain my bachelor’s degree of science in nursing to prove to my children and peers that nothing is impossible. Winning scholarships towards my dream of becoming a registered nurse will not only benefit me, but also my family as they depend on me for their support and it would be greatly appreciated.

Coming from a single parent household made me grow up and mature faster than most of my peers. Although it thought me to be strong and responsible it also felt unfair as a child to have so many responsibilities to help my mother and siblings. However, it has always fueled me to strive for more for myself! For better than what I was provided as a child. I knew I needed to be the change in my family so that I wouldn’t repeat the cycle of single parenting and struggling financially. Since I wanted to create a stable life for myself I was a good student and I never got into trouble. I tried really hard to maintain being an honor student throughout my childhood school years, and I did. After graduating high school, I attended community college. I struggled at my community college. The courses were a bit challenging for me, but more importantly I was struggling with not having an income. I had gotten so use to having an income since I worked all throughout high school to support myself, so when I started college and had to leave my job, it effected me negatively. I didn’t have the support that I needed from my family to push me to hang on, or promises that things would get better, so after two semesters, I dropped out. Now, I am proud to say that I back in school. I am an adult college student, mother of two, working per diem as a nursing assistant and it can be a lot to balance. Especially, only being able to work per diem, financially it is challenging with a family. However, I am a senior in nursing school, with only one semester left. Also, I will be first generation college graduate in my family and I am very proud of that. As of May 2023 I will have my Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. Once I become an established nurse I would like to start an organization that will be helping single parents who want to become nurses with the process of college. Providing a number of resources, such as the different types of schools there are that allow you to become a nurse, schools with lower tuition, or even something as simple as a reliable childcare in the area, so that one isn’t worried about their child as they’re trying to attend college. I would like to provide of all guidance. Giving them examples through all the ins and outs to become prepared for their college journey to better themselves for their lives and their children’s lives, as I am doing for myself.
