During the pandemic, I co-founded The Covid NineTEEN Project, an international organization offering free one-on-one tutoring and activities ranging from the arts to academics to athletics for over 800 elementary school students in 14 different countries. We have over 250 teen mentor volunteers hosting 50+ activities per week, with programs offered in 15 different languages. Our efforts have been featured on Good Morning America, CBS Los Angeles, KTLA, Sirius XM, Moms.com, and a nationwide Nexstar special. Students worldwide have been able to further their education and interdisciplinary interests virtually through our programming. As a daughter of an educator, I grew up spending early mornings and late nights assisting my mom and other teachers on campus. Since I have always been immersed in the educational sphere, I gravitate towards opportunities to teach others and make an impact in my community. Additionally, I am an avid activist for educational equality, with ambitions of someday being appointed US Secretary of Education. After viewing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the education system, I was inspired by my background in education to pitch to my best friend an organization offering free virtual activities and tutoring. When schools transitioned to distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, I observed firsthand how educational inequalities were exacerbated. With students struggling to keep up in classes, it became evident that they lacked the support systems they once had at school, in addition to losing their extracurricular outlet for further academic, athletic, and artistic pursuits. I saw parents struggling to juggle both working full-time from home and childcare, and needing a form of programming to occupy their children. I knew that a community-oriented, innovative solution was necessary to address such educational inequities and demand for programming to preoccupy young children. As I had already founded an organization at the age of eight, I had the experience of creating a nonprofit and knew I could provide a unique lens as executive director considering my background in education. By providing free programming, I realized that I could combat the prevalence of educational inequities. The outcomes achieved through the project are threefold. Firstly, students who attend our activities and one-on-one tutoring sessions are able to improve upon their academic, athletic, and artistic skills while simultaneously gaining the support and guidance of a teen mentor in their life. Secondly, parents are able to enroll their children in free programming to fill their days, thereby minimizing the economic burden of childcare while also getting their child ahead in terms of academic preparation for their future. Thirdly, teens involved in the project gain leadership skills, in addition to new friendships as they collaborate with other teens. Thus far, we have over 250 volunteers providing programming for 800+ students in 14 different countries, so we have certainly surpassed our goals. Some other metrics of our success in the project include that we have operated with daily activities & tutoring (other than US national holidays) for 35 weeks, offered over 3200+ activities, and provided over 5500+ individual tutoring sessions in 15 different languages. Our project has also been featured on local and national news outlets for our efforts. As co-founder, I oversee the organization at large and coordinate the executive board, in addition to carrying out logistical tasks to ensure the website is updated, proper information is sent to parents, and activity lesson plans are approved. I also lead volunteer orientations, assist in volunteer interviews, read volunteer applications, and help with approving activity proposals and lesson plans. Beyond administration, I work hands-on in activities and tutoring, hosting classes ranging from Zumba to Environmental Science and tutoring in History and English. I spend approximately 35 hours per week on The Covid NineTEEN Project responsibilities and enjoy every minute.
