Hello! My name is Sarah Feraidoon and I’m an Afghan-American musician, lacrosse ref, and scientist. My current goal is to complete my Masters in Bioinformatics by Spring 2024 at NYU. I’m a part-time student and full-time researcher who is always ready to make each day a good one. I’m happy to radiate positivity in this world, share knowledge, and lift other people up with me as I learn and grow. Currently, my job title is Associate Scientist. I have been at Pfizer for 2 years, starting in the Robotics & Automation department and then transitioned to Molecular Biology & Bioinformatics! I am so excited to implement my coding, robotics, and technical skills in the lab. My first experience working with robots was at NASA's Glenn Research Center in 2016. I worked as a Design Engineer to simulate future missions to Mars while earning my A.S. in Biology. I later received my B.S. in Biochemistry at Ramapo College. Learning is how I never stop adding value to myself. My long term goal is to master disease biology, prevent people’s suffering, eradicate cancer, and increase positive health outcome via precision medicine! I have been blessed with opportunities and it is not lost on me how far I've come. My first college experience as a PharmD student was not successful. My path forward demanded honest self-reflection and cognizance of my weaknesses. As a result, I became more resilient. I will always be resilient.     I love math because of how satisfying it is to find a solution. Growing up, math was my favorite subject and it was something that always clicked for me. We had challenges to see who would complete their times-table worksheets the fastest and I remember racing through them as fast as I could. As a result, my teachers would call me the "human calculator". From a young age, I found it very rewarding to tackle and finally solve a problem. The class that most sparked my interest in math was Creative Math, which I took in seventh and eighth grade. That class shaped me and challenged me to be the kind of thinker I am today. The problems we were faced with were problems that required one to think outside the box. It also demanded attention to detail and critical reading skills. This kind of math was pivotal in developing the kind of thinking and learning I would do from then on. I am currently in a Master's program in Bioinformatics. My previous job role as a lab technician inspired me. At CooperGenomics, a genetic testing company, we would run assays and use sequencing instruments called NextSeqs to give IVF patients a diagnosis on their biopsied embryos and give a recommendation regarding implantation. The core of NextSeq technology is statistics and algorithms so that piqued my interest in further studying bioinformatics, biotechnology, and NextSeq technology. Little me would have never guessed that I would find such a cool real-life application of math! I love both maximizing efficiency and understanding the world and math is a tool that helps me do just that.

    To this day, reffing girls' lacrosse has been my most rewarding job. I love that it feels like the "first day of school" every time I ref the first game of the season. At the age of sixteen, one of my close friends from my high school lacrosse team encouraged me to join her in becoming a lacrosse official/referee. I took a chance and said, "Let's do it!" I couldn't drive yet so my mom would drop us both off at Livingston High School for a four-hour meeting on a Saturday. Four hours, for four Saturdays in a row, felt like an eternity to a sixteen-year-old (still feels long even now). Once we took our certification exams, BOOM, we were in! As long as we paid our dues every year, we would never have to sit through one of those four-hour meetings again. In 2013, I turned seventeen, passed my driving exam, and finally began officiating lacrosse games all over New Jersey for girls ages 8 to 14. I truly love the role I play in these young girls' lives. Often, their coaches do not know the rules that well. The field is usually not correctly marked or bordered/sectioned with cones. There needs to be a visible scoreboard at all times and the home team is supposed to provide a person to keep time. Admittedly, the rules within the game are a bit complex - there are updates every year and it's silly to expect a little kid to remember all of them. However, there are aspects coaches can more directly control, like making sure one's field meets the requirements of the rulebook. Such an arrangement is not difficult to achieve but it requires preparedness from the coaches. Unfortunately, while field regulations are a fundamental necessity, I usually find that fields are failing the pre-game inspection checks. To address this, I've connected with my lacrosse mentor and will soon create a new workflow for addressing, logging, and solving problems every lacrosse official encounters that cannot be solved that day in hopes to prevent it from becoming an ongoing issue. I hope to see a change in the way coaches are prepared for game day, whether it has to do with field dimensions and equipment, or even any issue beyond this one. Being a youth girls' lacrosse official for nine years has allowed me to provide safety, structure, feedback, and positivity to the girls' lacrosse community. To be in this role for so long meant a commitment to upholding the fairness of the game and knowledge of the rules as well as being a role model for professionalism and sportsmanship. It motivates me to be strong, knowledgeable and prepared for instances when a person or coach disagreed with my call. This role is what you make of it and having the self-discipline to annotate the rulebook every year and be as studious as possible allowed me to be an excellent official.     Athletics Scholarship
    I've always loved playing sports, especially with my big brother. Growing up, he always let me join pick-up games with his friends. Nothing made me happier than being a goalie in soccer or just shooting around our basketball hoop. I loved being included and it made me feel important to help complete their teams. I've played many sports from childhood through adulthood. My experience is unique because I've been a team's MVP but I've also been one of the weaker players. In each circumstance, I truly found joy in working with my team and bettering myself. It was always hard for me to run in the cold weather, so I preferred to play goalie in soccer. I ended up breaking my wrist one year blocking a shot, and that break took me out for the season. Even so, I cheered my team on every single game from the sidelines. Basketball was my favorite. I was called "sharpshooter" in elementary school! When I got to middle school, however, I started to see other girls' skill sets surpass mine - I was a good ball handler but my agility needed serious conditioning due to my asthma. In 7th grade, I did not make the basketball team, which I felt was embarrassing but fair. In response, I worked hard to ensure my body was ready for tryouts the following year. That next year, I did make the team and felt proud to be a part of something that was not exactly easy to achieve. Lacrosse is the sport that stuck with me the longest. It was a fairly new sport for most of us in town at the time and during my 8th-grade year, parents were gathering any athletes they knew to make a new team. I was never the best lacrosse player - it was difficult for me to overcome my asthma during colder days. Playing the attack position was my favorite and worth working for. I loved the opportunity of having the ball, sprinting to goal, faking out the goalie then releasing a shot, and my teammates cheering me on. I played lacrosse all four years of high school and looking back, I still feel nostalgic about it - across the street from our high school was the go-to pizza place that gave me the sustenance I needed to get through 2 hours of practice.     Al-Haj Abdallah R Abdallah Muslim Scholarship
    To me, being a Muslim means viewing the world through a lens of gratitude and treating people how I want to be treated. My parents immigrated to the U.S. from Afghanistan and I grew up going to Sunday school and learning about Islam. The values I learned there shaped me into the person that I am. It gave me the tools to communicate directly with Allah without a middleman. I always wanted to be a doctor or scientist growing up. Healing people was the goal. I received my A.S. in Biology and my B.S. in Biochemistry. After college, I worked as a PGT-A Lab Technician [PGT-A: Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy (ploidy = chromosome abundance)] at CooperGenomics for two years. There, we received samples of biopsied embryos from embryologists whose patients started IVF because they had reproductive health issues and we would diagnose embryos as euploid (normal) or aneuploid (abnormal). Now, I am doing vaccine research via robotics & automation and am going back to school for my Master's in Bioinformatics at NYU. My passion is in precision medicine because I want to minimize the suffering in the world and find early prognostic markers and better treat/prevent cancer. It was not just a single person who inspired me for this career but throughout life, I found inspiration in my mentors and even in myself through my success and failures. I originally went to a PharmD program at St. John's University after high school but it was challenging for me to find a balance there. Instead of completely giving up or staying somewhere I didn't belong, I shifted gears and transitioned into a Biology program at community college back in New Jersey, where I could move back home and recalibrate. At the end of the day, I really want to make my mom and myself proud. I actually never saw myself going back for my Master's because I thought it was too difficult for someone like me, but over time, I truly became aware of how much I was capable of. I was very involved in my community in high school. I had joined a club called LEAP, which stands for Leaders Encouraging Adolescent Progress. This was a club where members led a drinking-and-drug-free lifestyle and went to elementary- and middle-schools to advocate for anti-drug abuse. In college, I really enjoyed "Midnight Runs" where we coordinated multiple points in Manhattan to distribute food and clothes to individuals experiencing homelessness. Now, I continue to make a difference in my community by holding part-time jobs where I get to interact with the next generation. I was a substitute teacher at my old high school, Lakeland Regional High School, for a few years and still currently referee lacrosse for New Jersey Youth Girls Lacrosse (ages 8-14). This Bioinformatics program will allow me to independently and collaboratively research, analyze, troubleshoot, and make projections in cancer research. NYU’s faculty have so much experience in research and addressing genetic diseases. One day I would love to gain my own and show student scientists how real-world applications are being used today. I am lucky for the upbringing my parents gave me so that I could focus on my ambitions. I do not take the food, clothing, and shelter I have for granted. Because of them, I became ready to accept this new challenge and commitment to taking my education to the next level.     I am really inspired how sequencing technology has made the world a better place. Frederick Sanger developed a traditional method of sequencing in 1977 that was very accurate but very slow. The automation of Sanger Sequencing led to the impressive Human Genome Project, completed ahead of schedule. The human genome was originally thought to be only 500 human genes, but the first draft of the HGP in 2001 provided a surprising estimation that the number of human genes was lower than expected. When scientists realized that only covered 1% of the human genome, they projected it would take 100 years to complete. Using a combination of Shotgun Sequencing and Hierarchical Sequencing, scientists from all over the world contributed to the revolutionary discovery and cataloging of a "parts list" of more human genes, leading to the emergence of proteomics and transforming our understanding of evolution. I find sequencing inspiring because of my experience as a PGT-A Lab Technician [PGT-A: Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy (ploidy = chromosome abundance)]. I worked at a genetic testing company at CooperGenomics once I graduated Ramapo College with a B.S. in Biochemistry in 2019. There, we received samples of biopsied embryos from embryologists whose patients had reproductive health issues. These samples would come to our lab, where we would intake and freeze them, then perform amplification in order to increase the genetic material. Once confirming successful amplification, we would use a Nextera Library Preparation kit to fragment, molecularly tag, and amplify many samples in a high-throughput nature (96 or 192 samples at a time). Samples would be further process by "cleaning" away any impurities via size-selection beads and later would be normalized via ion-selection beads. Normalization was for statistical purposes (very important) to ensure the sample amounts were equal to each other so the sequencing machine wouldn't favor reading one over the other. Finally, the samples would be denatured to become single-stranded and, altogether, pooled and fed into the NextSeq machine. The DNA would flow across a flow cell and the flow cell's lawn, coated with oligos, would collect these strands and begin bridge amplification, sequencing, and identifying nucleotides with fluorescent technology. After 14 hours, the NextSeq produces a file of reads that describe the abundance of each chromosome, thus diagnosing embryos as euploid (normal) or aneuploid (abnormal). This sequencing technology is mind-blowing and I'm learning more about it in my Master's program!
