Since I was a young girl navigating the playground, I had thoughts of bigger for myself. Those thoughts continued to take a life of their own in my head from wanting to be a doctor to narrowing it down to an anesthesiologist. As those thoughts grew philosophies of where I wanted to study for higher education also began to be a part of my everyday thought. So as young as ten or eleven years old I had a plan and an idea of what I wanted to do in life as well as where I wanted to complete my schooling. “I will attend Spelman College and become an Anesthesiologist,” and here I am ready to pursue my dreams of almost a decade.
At some point, life hit my family in the form of a Cancer diagnosis for my younger sister. It was truly a tough time for me to navigate and understand. In some ways, my dreams started to be moved to the side and tried to focus on my sister and supporting my family in any way possible. But in that time sadness, hurt, and confusion started to shape my purpose in a not-so-positive way. At some point going through what I went through with my sister’s diagnosis, the thoughts that were formed in my head as a young girl started to become my purpose. I’m ready to change the world in the form of medicine and ease a small amount of the suffering in America today. You only have one life to live and that is when I started to fully pursue my dream and heal the world from within.
I come from a low-income household and an urban living environment, and I always wanted to do something to change my dynamics and have a career that will afford me a life where I can give back to those in need physically and medically. Seeing the world around me I noticed that there are not many people like me in the career that I wish to be in and that also pushed me to want it that much more so that I can give the world and my community hope in the form of someone that looks like them and understand where they come from. When my sister with through her battle that may everything came together for me and helped me understand that it's not just a career anymore it is my purpose. It is what I need to do so that I can fulfill my life’s duty.

Cat Zingano Overcoming Loss Scholarship
Recently I lost both my maternal and paternal great grandmothers. Death was not new to me because I understand with life comes death but going to funerals and morning was something that I have never personally experienced. When I lost my paternal grandmother, it was hard because, before her death my father, siblings and I would go visit her in her home as well as the hospital, so I had a stronger bond with her. She has been in my life all through my childhood and losing her opened me to what I now know as morning. Soon after losing her, I lost my maternal grandmother and that was the toughest one for me because I witnessed firsthand what it did to my mother and that is when my heart broke. Death is hard and today I am still finding my way through and learning that it's truly a daily battle because you can be perfect one day and on any given day it can be harder to process. I want to fight to be of service to those in need of medical support. Experiencing the losses that I have I found my purpose. I want to become a doctor and provide some relief to those that going throw certain medical battles that may not end well. Future Is Female Inc. Scholarship
Feminism is standing behind women, understanding women, listening to women's stories, etc. You do not have to agree with everything a feminist says, or a woman says for that matter, but being able to understand her side and try to learn why a woman is like this and why she does what she does is feminism. Feminists are people who equally treat men and women the same. Beliefs may not align, but to be able to stand with a woman and understand a woman is a feminism at its finest. There are many different definitions for what a feminist is, but a feminist is someone who is one with women. You are willing to learn about women, generally and personally, and you are willing to be rid of bias against women and/or understand bias toward women. Feminists are people who support women, even if you do not understand, even if you do not agree with them, but to be able to say this woman has a voice and an opinion and I will stand behind it when no one else will, that is feminism. Feminism is about respecting women's experiences. Women go through many hardships and mentally altering things throughout life. To respect their stories and the things they have been through shows how much you care about women. Understanding why a group of women come together and decide to do something, respecting that is feminism. I am not saying that there is not a line women cannot cross, there is, but understanding why they crossed that line and what got them to that point shows you do support women and you respect their origins and their stories. Not many people can say that they are real feminists. Most people have many definitions of feminism. Feminism is what you believe it to be, that is all that it is. People who support women support them on more levels than one. They understand them spiritually or attempt to, they hear them out and listen and comprehend, not just what they say goes in one ear and a counterargument thought goes out. Feminism is something universal, anyone can do or believe in. Supporting women and standing with women is the most important act of feminism. It shows all those women they are not alone in this battle; no matter what someone is advocating for them or fighting with them. That feeling of security and understanding with a woman and another person is feminism. Feminism is what you believe it to be; it is what you make it out to be, personally.

I am very self-aware in life, meaning I understand almost everything about me and things related to me. Knowing this, I can work on aspects of myself that could be negative and accentuate positive aspects. Since I am aware of what shortcomings I might have, I do my best to strengthen other aspects and slowly work on my weaknesses. I am also proud of my perseverance. There are many aspects in life that a person goes through like trials; these trials are to see if you are strong enough to make it to the real goal you would like to reach. Many people will tell you that you cannot make it or that you should be realistic, but the will to keep going and do your best after everything is what matters. To persevere in any situation. Maybe you didn't do the best on a previous test, but the action of trying to keep understanding the concept and building on it shows you are very passionate about what you want to do. Passion is another characteristic I admire in myself. The passion I have for school and my dreams is something that tears me apart from other people who may be doing what I do. Some people do it to make their parents proud, prove someone wrong, or because of money. I want to be an anesthesiologist and I want to go to college because I have a great passion for helping people and a passion for going to school. I find joy in getting to learn more about the human body, but I also find joy in the aspects of learning and experiencing it with a class. These few qualities have helped me come a long way; through high school, middle school, jobs, etc. These characteristics have kept me going and kept my passion growing. Self-awareness keeps me humble and understanding of what may happen and all the possibilities. Self-awareness helps me better myself, which, in turn, helps me better my chances of winning scholarships and getting into my dream college. Passion keeps my love and my will going. The reason I have known my major and my dream job since I was in sixth grade started with my passion for medicine, hospitals, volunteer work, and many other aspects. Perseverance helps me to keep pushing. Life is full of good and bad, but sometimes it seems like the bad outweighs the good, but the will and fight you need to keep going after being torn down many times shows just how much you want it. These characteristics make me push myself to keep going and keep chasing. These are some of the best characteristics I have when it comes to college.
