For as long as I can remember, I have always felt a calling to healthcare. I feel that it is important to have empathetic and caring workers in this field because from the other side, it's scary and unpredictable. Over the years, I have lost many family members to sickness; what's helped ease my pain are the stories from my loved ones of the healthcare workers who made a difference in their lives towards the end. That is the type of person I want to be. I can't imagine what it's like waiting to cross the other side, but if I can provide some peace and solace to these patients then I feel that I have done my duty. I specifically want to work alongside cancer patients because I feel that they are one of the more vulnerable populations in healthcare who can use words of encouragement.

I was in my dorm room listening to my roommates singing their hearts out to some karaoke. We were baking chocolate chips cookies in our kitchen and dancing the night away. It was all laughs and smiles around me and I felt on top of the world. Nothing nor nobody could take my sunshine away!
I go to check my phone for any notifications I missed throughout classes and read a text from my sister that made my entire body quiver. It read “Sandy, Eli’s gone. He jumped off a building.” The sound of me dropping the cookie sheet and screaming at the top of my lungs was enough to make the world go completely silent. My mind was racing. My heart felt like it was going to give out from beating so fast. My blood felt so cold I thought I was in an ice bath. The room looked blurry and hazy. I couldn’t understand why this happened, and why right now. So many why’s went through my mind I couldn’t even sleep for the next few days. Nothing felt real for quite a while; I was floating and in survival mode. I don’t remember most of that time.
Having to pick out flowers, his casket, his outfit, the burial site, the church for the funeral mass, it was so much. In those moments I could not believe that this was happening. Most of the time I was in denial. He did not do that, there’s no way. There’s 7 of us, why didn’t any of us catch it? Why didn’t he reach out? Why weren’t we enough? Why would he do this to us? Why didn’t anyone stop him? It wasn’t fair.
After the funeral, I still couldn’t believe it. I saw him go down into the ground with my own two eyes and refused to accept that he was gone forever. That I will miss him forever and all I have are memories. How could this be? Even to this day, I still question it.
On top of everything, I was still in school. I was in my junior year and I didn’t know if I would make it through. Trying to study and do homework felt impossible when all I could think about was my brothers pain. I’m so thankful that my professors were understanding and allowed me to take some time off to grieve and get myself together; otherwise I think I would have flunked.
Nonetheless, I made it out. I graduated and honored my brother with a tattoo on my arm so I will have him with me until it’s time for me to go. I know he’s proud of me and loves me so much, that’s one thing he made sure I never forgot while he was still here.
My best advice for those going through a similar situation is to allow yourself to feel everything. Sometimes those grief waves are going to hit like a ton of bricks when you least expect it. If you let yourself feel how you feel, they won’t be as intense. If you don’t, those waves will be extremely intense. So talk about them. Laugh about them with others. Cry about them. Scream and be angry. Question everything. Honor them. Love them. Visit them when you can. They may not be here physically, but they are still alive in our love and memories.

Beyond direct patient care, I am passionate about health advocacy and education. I recognize the importance of promoting preventive measures and empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their health. Through community outreach programs, public health initiatives, and patient education, I plan to disseminate vital information, promote healthy lifestyles, and address health disparities. By advocating for accessible and equitable healthcare, I aspire to contribute to the well-being of communities and drive positive systemic change.
As medicine constantly evolves, I am driven to contribute to the advancement of medical research and innovation. I plan to actively engage in research projects, clinical trials, and collaborative studies. By exploring new treatment modalities, improving diagnostic techniques, and unraveling the complexities of diseases, I aim to contribute to the expanding knowledge base in the medical field. In today's self-centered world, I believe it is imperative to reflect on the importance of helping others. Acts of kindness and compassion have the potential to go a long way. The significance of offering a helping hand originates from fostering empathy, establishing connections, personal growth, and contributing to a more compassionate society. My personal experiences, including the devastating losses of my uncle to cancer and my brother to suicide last year, have deeply shaped my understanding of the value of assisting those in need.
The ability to empathize with others lies within the core of our humanity. I believe that helping those in distress closes the gap between isolation and connection. We establish a shared experience that goes beyond personal boundaries when we learn to understand the pain and suffering of others. Witnessing my uncle's battle with cancer and my brother's profound struggles with mental health before his untimely demise helped me understand the importance of genuine empathy. Through active assistance, we offer solace and support, helping others feel seen, heard, and understood.
The influence of helping others extends far beyond the immediate moment. I think that acts of kindness and compassion create a ripple effect, inspiring others to follow suit, and further fostering a culture of generosity and uniting a community. When we offer our time and resources, a chain reaction of positivity gets set in motion that can transform lives. During our family's hardships, we experienced the power of community support. Friends, neighbors and even strangers surrounded us, providing comfort and assistance. This outpouring of kindness lessened our burden and served as a beacon of hope, reinforcing the importance of compassion in times of crisis.
Helping others is also an opportunity for personal growth and self-discovery. By extending a helping hand, we challenge our limitations and develop essential life skills. By engaging with the struggles and hardships of others, we can widen our perspective. From there, we can then foster empathy, humility, and gratitude. My personal experiences allowed me to gain a deeper understanding that my pain could be transformed into a force for good, empowering me to advocate for mental health awareness and support initiatives. This also made me more aware of the challenges individuals face in navigating illness and mental health issues, and by actively participating in charitable endeavors and supporting organizations promoting these issues and many more, we collectively address systemic issues and strive toward an inclusive and caring society.
In a world burdened by adversity, extending a helping hand to others becomes not only a responsibility but also an opportunity for personal growth and societal transformation. The losses I endured last year reinforced the importance of compassion, empathy, and interconnectedness. By helping others, we forge meaningful connections, create a ripple effect of kindness, experience personal growth, and contribute to the construction of a compassionate society. In the face of adversity, our acts of compassion can ignite a spark of hope and resilience, making for a brighter future for all.
