Young Women in STEM Scholarship
My name is Sanduki Premaratne, and I am a first-generation immigrant from Sri Lanka currently studying biological sciences at San Jacinto College. Growing up in a low-income household, I learned the value of resilience, determination, and hard work. My family’s sacrifices have been a constant source of motivation, pushing me to strive for excellence in my education and future career. More than anything, I want to give back—to my family, my community, and those in need.
If I could do anything with my life, I would dedicate myself to the field of medicine, specifically pediatrics. My passion for healthcare stems from personal experiences witnessing how medical care can transform lives. I want to be a physician who not only treats illnesses but also provides comfort, education, and advocacy for families struggling to navigate the healthcare system. My ultimate goal is to improve healthcare accessibility for underserved communities, ensuring that every child, regardless of socioeconomic status, receives the care they deserve.
Beyond medicine, I also see myself as an educator and mentor, guiding the next generation of aspiring healthcare professionals. Whether through medical practice, research, or policy advocacy, I am committed to making a meaningful impact. My motivation is deeply personal—I want to build a future where healthcare is a right, not a privilege, and where children grow up healthy, empowered, and with the opportunities they deserve.
STEM is exciting to me because it is the driving force behind innovation, discovery, and problem-solving. Science and technology have the power to transform lives, whether through groundbreaking medical treatments, advancements in sustainability, or solutions to global challenges. My passion lies in healthcare, but I deeply admire the role of information technology in modern medicine. The intersection of biology and technology, particularly in fields like medical informatics and biotechnology, offers endless possibilities for improving patient care and outcomes.
While my primary goal is to become a pediatrician, I recognize the growing importance of information technology in healthcare. Electronic health records, artificial intelligence, and telemedicine are revolutionizing the medical field, making healthcare more efficient and accessible. If I were to work in IT, I would focus on leveraging technology to improve healthcare systems, ensuring that medical data is used effectively for early disease detection, treatment optimization, and personalized medicine.
One of the biggest challenges in medicine today is the gap in healthcare accessibility, particularly for underserved populations. Through IT, I could help bridge that gap by developing platforms that provide telehealth services, patient education, and data-driven solutions for better healthcare delivery. Whether as a doctor or as someone working on the technological side of medicine, I want to contribute to a future where healthcare is smarter, more efficient, and available to everyone.
One of the greatest challenges I’ve had to overcome was navigating my education and career aspirations while coming from a low-income household. My family has always prioritized education, but financial struggles meant that every decision—where to study, what opportunities to pursue, and how to manage expenses—was made with great caution. The pressure to excel academically while being mindful of financial constraints was overwhelming at times, but I refused to let it hold me back.
I faced significant challenges when I began college, particularly in balancing coursework, volunteer work, and financial responsibilities. There were times when I questioned whether I could afford to continue my education or if I should put my dreams on hold. However, I chose to face these difficulties head-on by seeking out scholarships, financial aid, and part-time opportunities that allowed me to support my education without sacrificing my academic performance.
Beyond financial challenges, I also struggled with self-doubt. As a first-generation college student, I often felt like I was navigating uncharted territory. To overcome this, I sought guidance from mentors, professors, and peers who had faced similar struggles. I built a support network that encouraged me to persist even when things felt impossible.
One of the most transformative experiences for me was volunteering at a cancer clinic. It was there that I truly understood the impact of compassionate healthcare. I met children and families who were battling unimaginable challenges, yet their resilience inspired me. I realized that I wanted to be part of the solution—not just by providing medical care but by offering emotional support, education, and advocacy for patients and their loved ones.
This experience reinforced my commitment to pursuing a career in medicine. It also shaped my understanding of the broader systemic challenges in healthcare, particularly in communities with limited resources. Seeing families struggle to access proper care fueled my passion for working toward healthcare equity.
This experience taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of seeking help when needed. I learned that adversity does not define me; rather, how I respond to it does. Now, I use my experiences to encourage others facing similar struggles, reminding them that perseverance and resourcefulness can turn obstacles into stepping stones toward success.
I am actively working toward my goal by immersing myself in both academic and extracurricular opportunities that prepare me for a future in medicine. I have taken on rigorous coursework in biology, ensuring that I build a strong foundation for medical school. Additionally, I continue to volunteer in healthcare settings, gaining hands-on experience that reinforces my commitment to patient care.
Financial struggles remain a reality for my family, but I am determined to keep pushing forward. Scholarships and financial aid make a significant difference in my ability to focus on my education without constant worry. More than just relieving financial stress, scholarships empower me to pursue my dreams with confidence, knowing that there are people and organizations that believe in my potential.
As I continue my journey in the medical field, I hope to use my experiences to inspire and uplift others. My goal is to become a skilled and compassionate pediatrician and a voice for those who often go unheard in the healthcare system.

Future Leaders Scholarship
During my time as Deputy Head Prefect in high school, I had the privilege of serving in a leadership role that profoundly shaped my character and skills. This position required me to lead by example, mentor younger students, and balance administrative responsibilities while maintaining my academic performance. It was an opportunity that taught me invaluable lessons about teamwork, resilience, and effective communication.
One of the most significant challenges I faced was organizing and managing a team of prefects to coordinate our school's annual cultural event. This event was a cornerstone of school tradition, showcasing student talent while fostering unity and pride. However, the planning process was fraught with challenges, from logistical hurdles and time constraints to conflicts within the team. As the deputy head, I felt a deep responsibility to ensure the event’s success while keeping morale high.
To address these challenges, I began by fostering open communication within the team. I held regular meetings to outline goals, delegate tasks, and encourage collaboration. When disagreements arose, I mediated discussions to ensure all voices were heard and that decisions reflected the team’s collective input. I also worked closely with school administrators to streamline processes, ensuring we met deadlines without compromising the quality of the event.
A particularly defining moment came when unforeseen technical difficulties threatened to disrupt the event just hours before it was scheduled to begin. Rather than panic, I quickly assembled a small team to troubleshoot the issue while delegating responsibilities to others to keep the remaining tasks on track. My ability to stay calm under pressure and trust my team’s capabilities was instrumental in resolving the issue. The event ultimately ran smoothly and was celebrated as one of the most successful in recent years.
The experience taught me that leadership is not about exercising authority but about empowering others and working collaboratively to achieve common goals. It also reinforced the importance of adaptability, empathy, and perseverance when faced with unexpected challenges.
As I pursue a career in healthcare, I plan to apply these leadership skills to make a positive impact in my field. In medicine, teamwork and effective communication are critical for delivering quality care, particularly in high-pressure environments. My experience as Deputy Head Prefect has prepared me to remain composed, coordinate effectively, and inspire confidence in those I work with, whether in a clinical setting or as part of a broader healthcare initiative.
Ultimately, I aim to use these skills to create meaningful change, particularly in underserved communities where access to quality healthcare is limited. Just as I worked to bring people together and overcome obstacles as a school leader, I aspire to lead efforts that promote collaboration, compassion, and innovation in the healthcare field. My time as Deputy Head Prefect was a foundation for the kind of leader I hope to become—one who leads with integrity, fosters inclusivity, and strives to make a difference in the lives of others.

Bookshelf to Big Screen Scholarship
The Hunger Games movie series stands out as one of my favorite book-to-film adaptations because it effectively bridged the gap between the written word and the visual medium, elevating the emotional intensity of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian world. As a fan of the book series, I was eager to see how the themes of survival, rebellion, and personal sacrifice would translate to film. The movies managed to stay true to the book’s core while offering a visually stunning experience that deepened my connection to the story.
One of the most compelling aspects of the film series was Jennifer Lawrence’s portrayal of Katniss Everdeen. She captured the complexity of Katniss—her strength, vulnerability, and reluctance to be a hero—perfectly. Lawrence brought an authenticity to the character that made her internal struggles visible, especially as Katniss transforms from a reluctant tribute into a symbol of resistance. Her performance made the emotional stakes of the story feel real and personal, something that the written word had only hinted at. This emotional depth helped the audience connect with Katniss in ways that went beyond the narrative.
Josh Hutcherson, as Peeta, also added layers to the relationship with Katniss. Their chemistry allowed the romance to feel genuine and grounded, rather than a mere plot device. The films deepened the emotional connection between them, particularly as they navigated the harrowing experiences of the Games together. The way their bond evolved from mutual survival to love became one of the most compelling aspects of the adaptation.
Visually, the Hunger Games movies captured the stark contrasts of Panem. From the bleakness of District 12 to the extravagant Capitol, the filmmakers created a world that was both haunting and vibrant. The arena, with its deadly traps and constant threat, was depicted in a way that made the danger feel palpable. The set design, costumes, and effects all worked to immerse the viewer in the dystopian setting that Collins had so masterfully created.
The film also amplified the emotional weight of the story through music and cinematography. For instance, the moment when Katniss volunteers to take her sister Prim’s place was made even more powerful through the combination of Lawrence’s performance, haunting music, and careful shot composition. This scene, which was already a pivotal moment in the book, became even more impactful on screen, leaving an indelible mark on the audience.
In conclusion, the Hunger Games films succeeded not only in staying faithful to the books but also in enhancing the emotional and visual experience. They brought to life the complexities of Katniss, Peeta, and the dystopian world of Panem in a way that made the story feel both immediate and deeply affecting. The combination of strong performances, exceptional direction, and careful attention to detail helped elevate the books into a cinematic experience that resonated with fans and newcomers alike. The adaptation perfectly captured the essence of Collins’ world while infusing it with a fresh perspective, making the Hunger Games films a standout example of a successful book-to-film transition.

In addition to my academic studies, I am passionate about volunteering and giving back to others. I currently volunteer at a cancer clinic, where I assist patients and their families with their healthcare needs. This experience has provided me with invaluable insight into the healthcare system and the personal challenges patients face, further solidifying my commitment to pursuing a career in medicine. My role in the clinic has taught me the importance of empathy, communication, and support when it comes to treating patients, especially children who are dealing with illnesses that can be difficult to understand and cope with.
Outside of volunteering, I have also been involved in leadership roles, such as serving as a senior prefect and deputy head girl in school, where I helped guide younger students academically and emotionally. These experiences have strengthened my ability to lead with empathy and initiative, skills I know will serve me well as I continue to pursue a career in healthcare. I want to be a role model for young people, particularly those from immigrant backgrounds, and show them that with determination, hard work, and a genuine desire to help others, they too can make a difference in the world.
Through my education and future career as a pediatrician, I plan to make a positive impact on the world by improving the health and well-being of children, particularly those in underserved communities. I hope to not only provide medical care but also offer emotional and psychological support to children and their families. By fostering strong, trusting relationships with patients, I believe I can help them feel more empowered in managing their health. In the long run, I want to contribute to healthcare accessibility and equality, ensuring that every child, regardless of their background or financial situation, has the opportunity to receive quality healthcare.
In the future, I envision myself not just as a healthcare provider but as an advocate for children’s health on a broader scale. I hope to work with organizations and policymakers to address the health disparities that affect marginalized communities, particularly immigrant populations. This is a cause that is deeply personal to me, as I have seen firsthand the challenges that immigrant families face when accessing healthcare.
Ultimately, I believe that by combining my passion for healthcare with my leadership experiences and commitment to service, I can make a meaningful difference in the world. My goal is to help children lead healthier, happier lives, and in doing so, contribute to building stronger, more resilient communities.

One of the most significant challenges I’ve faced in my life was adjusting to life as a first-generation immigrant. Moving from Sri Lanka to the United States at a young age, I had to quickly adapt to a new culture, language, and educational system. At first, I struggled with language barriers, making it difficult to communicate effectively with my peers and teachers. This obstacle affected my confidence and academic performance, but I was determined not to let it define me. I immersed myself in English, read extensively, and sought help from my teachers and classmates. Slowly, my language skills improved, and I became more comfortable navigating my new environment. Overcoming this challenge taught me the value of perseverance, adaptability, and the importance of seeking help when needed. It also instilled in me a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunities I have and a desire to help others who face similar challenges.
This scholarship will be instrumental in helping me continue my educational journey, allowing me to focus on my studies and pursue my goals without the added stress of financial burdens. As I work toward a degree in biological sciences with the goal of becoming a pediatrician, I am also committed to giving back to my community. As for philately, I believe it is an incredibly rewarding hobby that young people can benefit from, and I would encourage them to pursue it by emphasizing its educational and cultural value. Philately is more than just collecting stamps; it’s an opportunity to learn about history, geography, art, and even the world’s diverse cultures. I would encourage young people to start by learning about the origins of postage stamps and their role in communication. By collecting stamps from different countries, they can explore global history and current events. Philately also develops patience, organization, and attention to detail, skills that are beneficial in many areas of life. Additionally, participating in stamp clubs or exhibitions can help young people build connections with others who share the same interests, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. Through philately, young people can develop a lifelong passion for learning and discover the joy of collecting and appreciating the history that each stamp represents.

Dr. Samuel Attoh Legacy Scholarship
To me, legacy means leaving behind something that transcends your own life—whether it's knowledge, values, or the impact you have on others. It is about creating a lasting influence that continues to shape the lives of those who follow you. A legacy is not just what we achieve, but also how we influence others through our actions, words, and the choices we make. It’s a reflection of how we’ve lived and the meaningful contributions we’ve made to the world.
Growing up as a first-generation immigrant, my upbringing played a significant role in shaping my perspective on legacy. My parents, who made the difficult decision to leave Sri Lanka and start over in a new country, instilled in me a deep sense of resilience, hard work, and gratitude. They worked tirelessly to provide me with opportunities they never had. Their sacrifices and determination to give me a better life have fueled my desire to not only succeed but to also make a difference in the lives of others.
Through my upbringing, I learned the importance of family, education, and perseverance in the face of adversity. I saw firsthand the challenges that come with being an immigrant—navigating a new culture, adapting to a different educational system, and striving for success in an unfamiliar environment. These challenges, though difficult, have shaped my character and strengthened my resolve to create a meaningful legacy.
While my parents have set an example of hard work and determination, I recognize that there are cycles in life that need to be broken. I am determined not only to continue their legacy of resilience but also to break the cycle of financial instability that many immigrants face. By pursuing higher education and a career in medicine, I hope to create a life of stability and opportunity, not only for myself but for future generations of my family. I want to be the person who helps others overcome obstacles, just as my parents did for me.
My path in life has been shaped by the desire to give back and the understanding that my success is tied to the well-being of others. As I pursue my education and career goals, I am committed to using my knowledge and resources to make a positive impact on my community, especially in the healthcare field. Volunteering at a cancer clinic and assisting younger students with their studies are ways I try to make a difference, but my larger goal is to become a pediatrician. I want to help children and their families navigate the challenges of illness, just as I have learned to navigate my own challenges.
In the future, I plan to continue my parents’ legacy of hard work, resilience, and service to others while breaking the cycle of financial struggle and limited opportunities. I aim to use my career to inspire others, particularly young people from immigrant backgrounds, to pursue their dreams despite the challenges they face. By doing so, I hope to create a legacy that reflects not only personal success but also a deep commitment to the betterment of those around me.

Nabi Nicole Grant Memorial Scholarship
Faith has always been a guiding force in my life, offering me strength and clarity during moments of uncertainty. One of the most significant times I leaned on my faith was during my family’s move to the United States. Leaving behind my home, friends, and the comfort of familiarity in Sri Lanka was not just a physical transition but an emotional and mental upheaval as well. Adjusting to a new culture, a new school, and a language I feared would highlight my differences was overwhelming. My faith became the cornerstone that helped me navigate these challenges.
The first few weeks in the U.S. were isolating. I was acutely aware of my accent, my cultural differences, and the fear of being misunderstood. I struggled with self-doubt, often questioning whether I would ever feel at home in this foreign land. However, instead of succumbing to despair, I turned to my faith for solace and guidance. I remembered the teachings instilled in me during childhood—that challenges, no matter how daunting, are opportunities for growth and that resilience is a testament to one’s inner strength.
Every evening, I spent time reflecting and praying. In those quiet moments, I found a sense of peace and reassurance that I was not alone in this journey. My faith reminded me that I had the strength to overcome adversity and that this experience, though difficult, was part of a greater plan for my life. This mindset gave me the courage to step out of my comfort zone.
I began making small but significant changes. I initiated conversations with classmates, even if I feared making mistakes. I joined school activities to connect with others who shared my interests. Slowly, I found my voice and began to see the beauty in being different. My faith taught me to embrace these differences as unique gifts rather than shortcomings.
Over time, I not only adjusted to my new environment but also began to thrive. I formed meaningful friendships and excelled academically, rediscovering my confidence. This experience solidified my belief that faith is not just about seeking comfort during trials but about finding the strength to take action and persevere.
Looking back, relying on my faith during that challenging time taught me invaluable lessons about adaptability, gratitude, and resilience. It shaped my perspective on life, reminding me that every obstacle can be overcome with determination and trust in a higher power. To anyone facing similar challenges, my advice would be to hold onto your faith, take small steps forward, and trust that brighter days are ahead. Faith, when combined with action, can turn even the most daunting challenges into profound opportunities for growth.

My favorite song on Brat’s album is "360." This track captivates me with its raw emotion and introspective lyrics, showcasing Brat's ability to convey deep feelings through her music. It resonates with me because it reflects the highs and lows of life, reminding me that growth often comes from breaking out of these cycles and embracing change.
What I love most about "360" is its balance of vulnerability and empowerment. Brat's lyrics feel deeply personal, yet universal, making it easy to connect with the song on a personal level. It reminds me of times when I felt stuck, questioning my choices, and struggling to move forward. Yet, like the song suggests, there’s always an opportunity to come full circle, to learn from those experiences and start anew.

Sinhala, my first language, played a significant role in my upbringing and continues to shape my identity. Initially, transitioning to an English-speaking environment was daunting. I felt self-conscious about my accent and often hesitated to speak up in conversations. This created a sense of isolation, but it also fueled my determination to improve. With consistent effort and the encouragement of supportive mentors, I gradually became more confident in my English-speaking abilities. In my future career as a pediatrician, my ability to communicate in both Sinhala and English will be an invaluable asset. This scholarship would alleviate the financial burden on my family, allowing me to dedicate my time and energy to excelling academically and contributing to the field of holistic health and healing.

These early encounters inspired me to explore how such practices could complement modern medicine. Adversity, whether physical or mental, is an inevitable part of any journey, and my path toward pursuing a career in medicine has been no exception. From adapting to a new country to overcoming self-doubt, I have faced several challenges that could have deterred me from my goals. However, each obstacle has reinforced my resilience, sharpened my focus, and deepened my commitment to my aspirations.
One of the most significant challenges I faced was immigrating to the United States at 16. Starting fresh in a new country with an unfamiliar culture and education system was daunting. Initially, I felt overwhelmed by the language barrier and the pressure to fit in. Speaking up in class or forming friendships seemed intimidating, and I often questioned whether I could succeed in such a competitive and unfamiliar environment.
To overcome this mental adversity, I adopted a proactive approach. I set small, achievable goals for myself, such as participating in class discussions and joining extracurricular activities. These steps helped me gain confidence and integrate into my school community. I also focused on my academic strengths, excelling in science and math to reaffirm my capabilities. These subjects not only aligned with my interests but also became a source of motivation for my dream of becoming a pediatrician.
Volunteering at a cancer clinic and my community college has also played a critical role in helping me stay connected to my goals. Working with patients and fellow students reminded me of the importance of empathy and resilience in medicine. Seeing others face their own adversities with courage inspired me to push through my own challenges. These experiences strengthened my resolve to pursue a career that allows me to help others navigate difficult times.
When I encountered self-doubt—wondering whether I could handle the rigorous path to medical school—I turned to planning and preparation. I researched the steps required to achieve my goals, from earning a degree in biological sciences to gaining hands-on experience in the healthcare field. Breaking down the process into manageable steps made the journey feel less overwhelming and more attainable.
Each time I overcame a challenge, it reshaped my perspective. I learned to see adversity not as a barrier but as an opportunity to grow and develop critical skills like perseverance, adaptability, and resourcefulness. These lessons have become essential to my pursuit of a career in medicine, where challenges are a constant, but so are opportunities to make a difference.
Today, I approach adversity with a problem-solving mindset, understanding that obstacles are a natural part of any meaningful pursuit. By staying focused on my long-term goals, seeking support from mentors and peers, and continuously refining my skills, I am confident in my ability to navigate future challenges. The steps I have taken in the face of adversity have not only kept me on track toward my aspirations but have also prepared me to thrive in a demanding and rewarding career dedicated to helping others.

Adversity is an inevitable part of life, but it is also a defining force that shapes our character and perspective. One of the most challenging periods of my life came when my family immigrated to the United States. At the age of 16, I found myself in a completely unfamiliar environment, where I had to navigate a new culture, language, and education system, all while feeling a sense of isolation. This transition was not only overwhelming but also deeply intimidating, as I struggled to find my footing in a foreign land.
At first, I viewed this adversity as an insurmountable obstacle. I was constantly aware of my accent and hesitant to speak up in class or socialize with my peers. The fear of being misunderstood or judged often left me feeling disconnected and invisible. However, I quickly realized that I could not let these challenges define my experience or limit my potential. Instead of retreating into self-doubt, I chose to face the situation with determination and resilience.
My plan of action began with small, deliberate steps to adapt and thrive. I immersed myself in my new environment by actively participating in school activities and engaging with my classmates. I reminded myself of the courage it took to move across the world and used that as motivation to overcome my fears. I also leaned on my academic strengths, excelling in my coursework as a way to build confidence and establish a sense of belonging.
One of the most impactful steps I took was volunteering at my local cancer clinic and community college. These experiences allowed me to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and helped me realize the value of empathy and communication. Assisting patients and supporting fellow students gave me a sense of purpose and reminded me that adversity is not unique to me—everyone faces their own battles.
This period of adversity fundamentally altered my perception of life. I began to see challenges not as roadblocks but as opportunities for growth and self-discovery. I learned that resilience is a skill that can be cultivated and that perseverance often leads to unexpected rewards. Most importantly, I realized that vulnerability and courage are not mutually exclusive; it is possible to feel uncertain and still take bold steps forward.
The experience of overcoming adversity has instilled in me a deep appreciation for the strength that lies within us all. It has shaped my desire to pursue a career in medicine, where I can use my skills and experiences to help others navigate their own challenges. Today, I view life as a journey filled with both trials and triumphs, each offering valuable lessons that contribute to our growth. My advice to anyone facing tremendous adversity is to trust in their ability to adapt, seek support when needed, and embrace the opportunities for growth that lie within every challenge.

I understand the long hours, emotional demands, and continuous learning that come with a career in healthcare. However, the opportunity to improve lives and contribute to the greater good makes this journey worthwhile.
In pursuing a career in public service, I aim to uphold the values of compassion, integrity, and dedication. By combining my passion for helping others with my academic and professional goals, I hope to leave a positive and lasting impact on the world, one child at a time.
American Dream Scholarship
The American Dream, to me, is the pursuit of opportunity, self-fulfillment, and the chance to contribute to a better society. It is not solely about material wealth or personal success but about having the freedom to chase one’s aspirations, no matter where one begins. The American Dream is built on the principles of equality, resilience, and the belief that hard work, combined with opportunity, can lead to a life of purpose and fulfillment.
As a first-generation immigrant, my definition of the American Dream has been shaped by my family’s journey. My parents left behind the familiarity of their home country in search of better opportunities for our family. Their courage and sacrifices remind me that the American Dream is not given—it is earned through determination and perseverance. For me, it represents the ability to access education, build a meaningful career, and contribute to the community.
At its core, the American Dream is about inclusivity and providing a level playing field where anyone, regardless of their background, can succeed. However, achieving this dream is not without challenges. Systemic inequalities and societal barriers often make it difficult for some to access opportunities. Despite these obstacles, I believe that resilience and a commitment to improving oneself can overcome many hurdles.
For me, the American Dream is tied closely to education. Education has always been a cornerstone of my goals, and it has been my pathway to growth and empowerment. Through education, I have found the tools to dream bigger and the skills to turn those dreams into reality. It is also a means to uplift others, which is why I am passionate about pursuing a career in healthcare, specifically pediatrics. My dream is to not only achieve personal success but to use my skills and knowledge to improve the lives of children and families in my community.
The American Dream is not static; it evolves with each individual’s journey. For some, it might mean owning a home or starting a business; for others, it might mean achieving equality and representation in society. For me, it is about living a life of purpose—continuously growing, overcoming challenges, and helping others reach their potential.
Ultimately, the American Dream is a collective effort. It is about striving for individual goals while contributing to a society where everyone has the chance to dream, succeed, and thrive. By embracing these ideals, I hope to not only fulfill my version of the American Dream but also inspire others to pursue theirs.

Expression in Medicine Scholarship
Free expression is a fundamental ideal in medicine because it fosters the open exchange of ideas, enhances the quality of patient care, and allows for the growth and evolution of medical practices. Medicine is a constantly evolving field that relies on innovation, new perspectives, and diverse voices. Free expression enables medical professionals to challenge conventional wisdom, share novel research findings, and discuss alternative treatments or approaches without fear of censorship. This openness leads to improved problem-solving, greater collaboration, and ultimately better outcomes for patients.
In medicine, free expression also extends to advocating for patient rights, improving healthcare systems, and addressing issues such as health disparities or ethical concerns. For example, physicians who feel empowered to speak out about the challenges they face in their profession can help bring attention to critical issues like physician burnout, access to care, or health inequalities. Without the ability to freely express these concerns, necessary reforms might never take place. Similarly, patients must be able to freely express their symptoms, concerns, and preferences for care. Open, honest dialogue between patients and healthcare providers is essential to ensuring that care is patient-centered and aligned with individual needs.
Individuals within the medical field can help protect and bolster free expression by fostering an inclusive and respectful environment for discussion. This can begin with creating spaces for interdisciplinary collaboration, where diverse opinions are valued, and everyone feels safe to contribute. Medical professionals should be encouraged to share new ideas, research findings, and clinical experiences, even when they challenge the status quo. Mentorship programs, continuing education, and academic freedom can also promote free expression, allowing young professionals to voice their thoughts while learning from more experienced mentors.
Moreover, medical institutions should protect individuals from discrimination or retaliation for expressing their views. A culture of respect and trust, where medical professionals feel supported rather than penalized for speaking out, is vital for the advancement of medicine. Healthcare professionals must also advocate for policies that support free speech both within their institutions and in broader medical communities, ensuring that patient care and scientific integrity are never compromised.
In conclusion, free expression is essential in medicine for advancing knowledge, improving patient care, and fostering innovation. Medical professionals must protect this ideal by creating an environment of openness, supporting their colleagues, and advocating for policies that encourage the free exchange of ideas. By doing so, they ensure that medicine continues to evolve and adapt, ultimately leading to better healthcare for all.
Global Girls In STEM Scholarship
My experience in STEM has been instrumental in shaping my aspiration to become a pediatrician. From an early age, I was fascinated by biology and the intricate systems that sustain life. This interest was solidified through my coursework in high school and community college, where I delved into subjects like anatomy, chemistry, and genetics. These experiences sparked a desire to apply my knowledge to improve others' lives, particularly children’s. However, being a young woman in STEM hasn’t been without its challenges.
I’ve faced moments of self-doubt in environments where my abilities were underestimated or dismissed due to gender stereotypes. It was intimidating to enter classrooms dominated by male peers or to see fewer women represented in leadership roles within STEM. Despite these obstacles, I have embraced the challenge by building resilience and seeking mentorship from supportive professors and professionals. These experiences have fueled my determination to excel and break barriers for other young women aspiring to enter STEM fields.
My passion for STEM stems from its potential to create tangible solutions to pressing global issues. Science is not only a means of understanding the world but also a tool for change. As a future pediatrician, I aim to tackle healthcare disparities by ensuring access to quality care for children, particularly in underserved communities. My goal is to integrate advancements in medical technology, such as telemedicine and personalized treatments, to bridge the gap between patients and healthcare providers.
Additionally, I hope to contribute to medical research, particularly in understanding childhood illnesses and preventative care strategies. The analytical and problem-solving skills I’ve honed through STEM will enable me to approach these challenges with precision and creativity. Ultimately, I want to inspire the next generation of young women to see STEM as a field where they can make a lasting impact.
Through my involvement in STEM-related activities, such as volunteering at a cancer clinic and assisting younger students with homework, I’ve developed critical leadership skills. These experiences have taught me the importance of effective communication, empathy, and teamwork. At the cancer clinic, I learned how to adapt to high-pressure environments, maintain composure, and provide emotional support to patients and families. Working as a homework assistant allowed me to mentor children, fostering their curiosity and encouraging them to see STEM as an exciting and accessible field.
These roles have shaped my understanding of leadership as a balance between guiding others and empowering them to achieve their own potential. In my future career as a pediatrician, I plan to apply these skills by leading healthcare initiatives, mentoring medical students, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver patient-centered care. Leadership in STEM, to me, means creating an environment where innovation thrives, and everyone feels valued and included.
Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
My primary goal is to become a pediatrician, a profession that combines my passion for helping others with my interest in medicine and working with children. Achieving this goal requires a long-term, well-structured plan encompassing academic excellence, practical experience, financial management, and personal growth.
Academic Goals and Plans
The first step in my plan is completing my associate degree in biological sciences at San Jacinto Community College. I am currently at the end of my first semester, maintaining strong academic performance to ensure a seamless transfer to a four-year institution, such as the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL). To succeed, I will use resources such as study guides, online courses, and prep books while allocating at least six months for focused preparation. My ultimate goal is to gain admission into a reputable medical school, such as the Baylor College of Medicine.
Practical experience is essential in preparing for a career in medicine. I am currently volunteering at a cancer clinic and plan to continue gaining experience by volunteering at my community college and working as a homework assistant for younger students. These opportunities help me develop communication skills, empathy, and an understanding of patient care. Additionally, I will seek internships and shadowing opportunities with physicians to gain firsthand exposure to the medical field.
Pursuing a medical degree is expensive, so financial planning is crucial. I estimate the cost of completing my bachelor’s degree, including tuition, books, and living expenses, at approximately $20,000-$30,000 per year, depending on scholarships and financial aid. For medical school, tuition can range from $40,000-$60,000 per year, excluding living expenses. To finance my education, I plan to apply for scholarships and grants, seek part-time work when feasible, and explore federal student loans. Additionally, I am considering loan repayment programs, such as those offered to physicians working in underserved areas.
I anticipate completing my associate degree by 2026 and my bachelor’s degree by 2028. Medical school will require another four years, followed by a residency in pediatrics, lasting three to four years. By 2035, I aim to be a practicing pediatrician. While this timeline is rigorous, it allows for a structured progression, ensuring I meet all academic and professional requirements.
Challenges such as maintaining a high GPA, managing finances, and balancing work with studies are expected. To overcome these, I will stay organized, seek support from mentors, and prioritize self-care to avoid burnout. If my path to medical school faces obstacles, I am open to exploring related healthcare fields, such as physician assistant programs or medical research.
By combining academic diligence, practical experience, and financial planning, I am confident in my ability to achieve my goal of becoming a pediatrician. My commitment to this path reflects my desire to contribute meaningfully to my community by providing compassionate, high-quality care to children.
GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
The lyric “But I can’t help it, I got issues, I can’t help it, baby” from Olivia Rodrigo’s Obsessed resonates deeply with the experience of adolescence. It encapsulates the emotional turbulence of growing up, a time often characterized by insecurities, heightened self-awareness, and the struggle to navigate relationships and identity. For me, this line speaks to the raw vulnerability and self-acceptance that come with realizing that imperfection is a natural part of being human.
During adolescence, emotions often feel larger than life, and this lyric mirrors the intensity of that experience. The repetition of “I can’t help it” reflects a sense of helplessness that many teenagers feel when confronted with their own flaws. It’s an honest acknowledgment of how overwhelming it can be to juggle the expectations of others while coming to terms with personal struggles. In my own life, I’ve had moments when I felt consumed by my emotions—whether it was self-doubt about my abilities or fear of not fitting in. This lyric reminds me of those times, when all I could do was acknowledge my feelings and try to move forward.
The phrase “I got issues” is particularly powerful because it normalizes imperfection. Teenagers often feel pressured to project an image of perfection, whether academically, socially, or emotionally. However, this lyric flips that narrative, encouraging listeners to embrace their flaws instead of hiding them. It has taught me that admitting I have “issues” is not a sign of weakness but of strength. It’s a reminder that everyone has their own struggles, and what matters is how we navigate them.
Moreover, the lyric touches on the duality of adolescence—on one hand, the desire to appear strong and independent, and on the other, the vulnerability of needing understanding and support. The line “I can’t help it, baby” suggests a plea for acceptance, not just from others but also from oneself. It’s a sentiment that resonates deeply with me, especially in moments when I’ve struggled to find a balance between being authentic and meeting societal expectations.
Olivia Rodrigo’s lyric captures the universal truth that imperfection is what makes us human. For teenagers especially, this acknowledgment can be liberating. It reassures us that it’s okay to not have everything figured out, to make mistakes, and to feel deeply. For me, this lyric serves as a reminder to approach my own struggles with compassion and to embrace the parts of myself that I once thought were weaknesses.
Through its raw honesty, this lyric reflects the beauty of self-awareness and the importance of self-acceptance. It reminds us that growth comes from understanding and embracing our imperfections, a lesson that resonates not just in adolescence but throughout life.

I support her career because she’s more than just a talented musician—she’s a voice for those who feel unheard, and her music is a source of strength and empowerment. Billie Eilish's music has always resonated with me deeply because of her ability to blend raw emotions with powerful storytelling. Her songs capture a range of feelings, from vulnerability to defiance, making them relatable and inspiring. My top three Billie Eilish songs are Happier Than Ever, Birds of a Feather, and Lunch, each of which holds a special place in my heart for different reasons.
Happier Than Ever is one of Billie's most emotionally charged songs and has profoundly impacted me. The track begins with a soft, almost melancholic tone, expressing heartbreak and disappointment, but then transforms into a powerful anthem of liberation and self-realization. The song resonates with me because it mirrors my own journey of breaking free from toxic situations and learning to prioritize my happiness. The crescendo of emotion in the song reminds me that it’s okay to let go of what no longer serves me and embrace a stronger, more confident version of myself.
Birds of a Feather stands out for its hauntingly beautiful melody and poignant lyrics about connection and shared experiences. It explores the theme of companionship, even in the face of challenges. For me, this song reflects the importance of finding people who truly understand and support you, especially during difficult times. The metaphor of "birds of a feather" perfectly encapsulates how relationships can offer solace and strength, reminding me of the value of authentic bonds in my own life.
Lunch is a song that captures the monotony and absurdity of everyday life while also exploring deeper themes of self-awareness and disconnection. Its unique perspective and almost whimsical tone strike a chord with me, as it highlights the importance of finding meaning in small, seemingly mundane moments. The song encourages me to reflect on how I spend my time and what truly matters to me, serving as a reminder to stay grounded and mindful even amid life’s chaos.
Each of these songs resonates with me for their raw honesty and emotional depth. Billie Eilish has a remarkable way of translating complex feelings into music, making her songs deeply personal yet universally relatable. These tracks have not only comforted me during tough times but also inspired me to embrace my emotions and find strength in my vulnerabilities.
Wicked Fan Scholarship
I became a fan of Wicked the moment I watched the movie with my brother. The captivating plot and incredible acting completely drew me in, leaving a lasting impression that I can’t stop thinking about. The story’s complexity, exploring themes of friendship, betrayal, and self-discovery, resonated with me deeply. Watching the relationship between Elphaba and Glinda evolve from rivalry to an unlikely bond reminded me of the power of understanding and acceptance, even in the face of societal prejudice.
One of the most memorable moments for me was hearing Defying Gravity performed by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. The song has been stuck in my mind ever since, not only because of its beautiful composition but also because of how powerfully it conveys Elphaba’s decision to embrace her true self, despite the judgment and challenges she faces. Ariana and Cynthia’s voices brought a new level of emotion and strength to this iconic song, making it unforgettable.
I have been a lifelong fan of Ariana Grande’s music, so I was drawn to Wicked because of her involvement in the film. Ariana’s ability to pour her heart into every performance made me confident that the movie would be exceptional, and I wasn’t disappointed. Her portrayal of Glinda added layers of charm and depth to the character, showcasing her talent as both a singer and an actress.
Now, I find myself impatiently waiting for part two. I’m eager to see how the story unfolds, particularly the journey of Elphaba and how the plot ties into the original Wizard of Oz narrative. Wicked has become much more than just a movie for me—it’s a story that inspires me to embrace individuality and pursue what’s right, even when it’s difficult.
Ultimately, Wicked has reignited my love for musicals and storytelling, and I can’t wait to see how the next chapter will further captivate audiences. This movie has cemented itself as one of my favorites, not only for its stunning performances but also for its meaningful messages about courage, loyalty, and staying true to oneself.
Redefining Victory Scholarship
Success, for me, is not defined by traditional metrics such as wealth or status, but rather by the ability to positively impact the lives of others and continually grow as an individual. I see success as a journey, not a destination, where every step taken—whether it is overcoming challenges or learning from failures—contributes to a larger purpose. The path to success involves personal fulfillment, the pursuit of knowledge, and the commitment to making meaningful contributions to my community.
One of the most fundamental aspects of success in my life is the ability to learn and apply that knowledge in ways that benefit others. As I continue my academic journey, I am drawn to fields that allow me to combine my interests in science, healthcare, and community service. Specifically, I am pursuing a career in the medical field, where I hope to contribute to the health and well-being of others, particularly in underserved communities. This has been shaped by my experiences, including my volunteer work at a cancer clinic, my role as a homework assistant, and my desire to eventually become a physician assistant. These experiences have reinforced my belief that true success comes from improving the lives of those around me, especially in areas where resources and support are scarce.
In my view, success also includes the development of resilience, adaptability, and emotional intelligence. Life is unpredictable, and the ability to navigate through adversity with determination is something I value deeply. Whether in academic settings or personal situations, I have learned that setbacks are a natural part of the process, and how we respond to these challenges shapes the outcome. I find motivation in overcoming obstacles, and I believe that each difficulty faced is an opportunity for growth. The lessons I have learned, particularly through the difficulties I have faced in adapting to a new culture and academic environment as an immigrant, have helped me develop a strong sense of perseverance.
The opportunity to further my education and gain practical experience will play a crucial role in achieving my version of success. Access to a supportive academic environment and the resources it offers will allow me to continue to develop both professionally and personally. I believe that by gaining hands-on experience in healthcare and continuing my studies, I will be well-equipped to not only contribute to my field but also to my community. Specifically, volunteering at a cancer clinic and continuing to work as a homework assistant are essential steps in developing the skills I need to work effectively with others and build a strong foundation in healthcare.
Moreover, this opportunity will help me to build the connections and network necessary to make a meaningful difference in healthcare. Mentorship, collaborative learning, and access to experts in the field are invaluable resources that will allow me to refine my skills and deepen my knowledge. I am especially drawn to the idea of working in healthcare roles where I can directly impact the lives of patients, as this aligns with my passion for service and desire to make a difference in the world.
Ultimately, success for me is defined by the impact I have on others and the knowledge that I have continuously pushed myself to be better, to learn more, and to contribute to society. This opportunity is a stepping stone toward that goal, equipping me with the tools, knowledge, and experiences I need to fulfill my potential and make a lasting, positive impact on the lives of others. By advancing my education and gaining more hands-on experience in the medical field, I will be able to use what I learn to give back to my community and work toward a future where I can help those who need it the most.
RonranGlee Literary Scholarship
Selected Paragraph: "They called her mad. They said she was a witch, that she was just a girl with foolish dreams. But Joan didn’t listen. She knew what she had to do. She had a mission, and nothing—no one—was going to stop her."
This passage from Michael Morpurgo’s The Sparrow encapsulates a core theme that resonates throughout history: the power of unwavering conviction in the face of opposition. Joan of Arc, despite the harsh criticism and ridicule from society, remained resolute in her purpose, and it is this steadfastness that allowed her to accomplish what seemed impossible. Her ability to disregard societal rejection serves as a profound lesson in leadership, self-belief, and the importance of pursuing one’s mission regardless of public opinion. In examining this passage, we can explore how revolutionary leaders—often viewed as “mad” or “foolish” by their contemporaries—can ultimately inspire transformative change by staying true to their vision.
The journey of Joan of Arc is one of the most remarkable examples of an individual challenging societal norms to achieve something extraordinary. As a young peasant girl, she was dismissed and vilified for claiming that she had received divine messages urging her to lead France in its struggle during the Hundred Years’ War. The passage from The Sparrow highlights how society rejected her, calling her mad and labeling her as a witch. These labels are a reflection of the fear and skepticism that often accompanies unconventional individuals, especially when they defy deeply ingrained societal expectations. In this case, Joan’s refusal to conform to the expectations of her gender, her class, and her time led to her being marginalized and criticized. However, her response to this rejection was not one of doubt or retreat but of resolve.
Joan’s decision to ignore the criticism and continue with her mission speaks to the immense power of self-belief. The belief in her divine calling was so profound that it overcame the negative opinions of others, allowing her to focus on what she felt was a higher purpose. In the face of criticism, Joan's resolve remained unshaken—she "knew what she had to do." This statement reveals that Joan did not act impulsively; her purpose was rooted in a deep sense of clarity and certainty. This unwavering belief in her mission is an essential trait of effective leadership. It demonstrates that true leaders are often those who are willing to follow their own path, regardless of the challenges or resistance they face from others.
This concept is not unique to Joan of Arc but is found throughout history in other transformative leaders. Figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Albert Einstein, and even more modern-day activists like Malala Yousafzai faced similar challenges: they were initially dismissed, ridiculed, and often demonized by those who did not understand their vision. Yet, much like Joan, they persisted. The societal rejection of revolutionary ideas and leaders often comes from a place of fear or a refusal to acknowledge new possibilities. The status quo is often threatened when individuals present a radically different way of thinking or living, and the reaction is frequently one of hostility or disbelief. However, the perseverance to continue in the face of such opposition is what enables these individuals to effect profound change.
What makes Joan’s example particularly powerful is not only her resilience but the fact that she was a young woman in a patriarchal society. The medieval world was deeply embedded in traditional gender roles, and the idea of a young girl leading an army was inconceivable to most people of her time. The criticism she faced was likely intensified by these social norms, which made her leadership even more extraordinary. Joan’s ability to navigate this deeply ingrained societal limitation is a testament to the fact that true leadership often requires breaking barriers, challenging preconceived notions, and reimagining what is possible. Her story shows that leadership is not reserved for those with conventional qualifications or those who fit societal molds, but can come from anyone with the vision and determination to lead.
This passage also reflects an important philosophical concept: the struggle between external validation and internal conviction. Joan’s critics viewed her as a “mad” girl because they could not comprehend her purpose or the strength behind her convictions. They sought to undermine her mission by labeling her, which is often the first response to anyone who defies social expectations. In contrast, Joan chose to place her trust in her inner conviction rather than in the fleeting and often harsh opinions of others. This choice highlights an important lesson for all of us: it is not the opinions of others that define our worth or the worth of our goals, but our own belief in what is right. When we allow external validation to dictate our actions, we become vulnerable to the changing whims of public opinion. However, when we cultivate an internal source of strength rooted in clarity and purpose, we become resilient against external pressures.
Moreover, this passage invites us to reflect on the nature of leadership itself. Leadership is often associated with power, status, or knowledge. Yet, as Joan’s story reveals, leadership can also be about an unshakeable commitment to a cause or vision, even when the world around you is filled with doubt. Joan of Arc, despite being a young, untrained peasant girl, became a leader through her absolute faith in her mission. This type of leadership is rooted not in external authority or traditional qualifications but in the courage to act on one’s beliefs and inspire others to do the same. Leaders like Joan are not necessarily the loudest voices or the most influential individuals by conventional standards. Instead, they are the ones who take bold actions, fueled by an unwavering sense of purpose, and who inspire others to follow suit.
The story of Joan of Arc continues to resonate because it challenges us to reflect on how we respond to adversity. How do we react when others doubt us, dismiss us, or attempt to discredit our dreams? Do we give in to the weight of public opinion, or do we continue to move forward with our mission, trusting in our own inner strength? Joan’s ability to ignore the noise of criticism and stay true to her mission provides an enduring lesson for anyone facing obstacles in their path. Her example teaches us that resilience and self-belief are essential components of success, especially when confronted with resistance or criticism.
In conclusion, the passage from The Sparrow underscores the theme of unwavering conviction in the pursuit of a higher purpose. Joan of Arc’s ability to remain focused on her mission, despite the rejection and ridicule she faced, serves as a powerful reminder that true leadership comes not from conforming to societal expectations, but from following one’s own path with determination and courage. Joan’s story is a timeless example of how individuals who dare to dream differently, and remain steadfast in their beliefs, can ultimately change the course of history. As we face our own challenges, we would do well to remember her resilience and strive to remain true to our own sense of purpose, no matter the obstacles in our way.
Simon Strong Scholarship
Adversity has been a recurring theme in my life, but one of the most defining challenges I faced was adapting to life in the United States as a first-generation immigrant. My family moved here in search of better opportunities, but the transition was far from easy. I left behind familiar surroundings, close friends, and the comfort of understanding the cultural and educational systems. Instead, I found myself in an unfamiliar environment where I felt like an outsider. The weight of self-doubt, language barriers, and cultural differences often made me question my ability to succeed.
One of the hardest parts was navigating my first weeks at school. I was self-conscious about my accent and hesitant to speak up in class, fearing judgment. The fear of standing out or saying the wrong thing was paralyzing. Socially, I struggled to form connections, and academically, I had to adjust to new teaching styles and expectations.
Instead of letting these challenges overwhelm me, I decided to confront them head-on. I started by setting small, achievable goals each day, such as introducing myself to a classmate or answering one question in class. These small victories gradually built my confidence. I also leaned into my studies, using my academic strengths as a way to find stability and purpose. Outside of school, I worked on improving my English by reading extensively and practicing conversations with my family.
Over time, I began to feel more comfortable in my new environment. By the end of my first semester, I had made friends, excelled academically, and found my voice. The experience taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of stepping outside of my comfort zone. It also instilled in me a deep appreciation for the value of perseverance and the support of others during tough times.
This adversity shaped me into a more empathetic and determined individual. I understand what it feels like to be an outsider, and this drives my desire to create inclusive environments where others feel seen and valued. It has also fueled my passion for pursuing a career in medicine, where I can use my experiences to connect with diverse communities and provide them with compassionate care.
To someone facing similar circumstances, my advice would be this: Embrace the challenge as an opportunity to grow. Take small, consistent steps toward your goals and remind yourself that every struggle is temporary. Surround yourself with supportive people who encourage your progress, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when needed. Above all, believe in your ability to adapt and thrive, because resilience is built one step at a time.
Ward Green Scholarship for the Arts & Sciences
I am currently pursuing a degree in biological sciences with the long-term goal of becoming a pediatrician. My passion for healthcare and science stems from my deep desire to make a positive difference in the lives of others, particularly children. Through my studies, I aim to gain a strong understanding of biology, human anatomy, and medical practices, which will prepare me for medical school and ultimately a career dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children.
Becoming a pediatrician is more than a personal aspiration—it is a way for me to give back to my community in meaningful ways. I envision myself using my education to provide accessible, compassionate care to underserved populations. Many families face barriers to quality healthcare due to financial struggles, language differences, or a lack of trust in the medical system. As an immigrant myself, I’ve experienced how intimidating it can be to navigate unfamiliar systems, and I want to create a welcoming environment where families feel supported and valued. Through preventative care, education on healthy lifestyles, and personalized treatment plans, I hope to empower parents and improve outcomes for their children.
Beyond clinical practice, I also hope to advocate for systemic improvements in healthcare. My experiences have shown me that healthcare inequities exist not only in access but also in representation. I want to advocate for policies and programs that address these gaps, ensuring that healthcare is not a privilege but a right for all. Whether by working with local organizations or participating in national initiatives, I see myself contributing to a healthcare system that is more inclusive and equitable.
Education is another area where I hope to make a difference. As someone who has benefited from mentorship and guidance, I aim to pay it forward by mentoring young people, particularly girls interested in STEM fields. It is important to me to help them overcome societal and personal barriers, showing them that a career in science and medicine is within their reach. I believe that representation matters, and by sharing my journey, I can inspire others to pursue their passions and make meaningful contributions to their communities.
My academic journey has not been without challenges, but each obstacle has reinforced my commitment to my goals. From adjusting to life in a new country to balancing rigorous coursework with volunteering, I have learned resilience and the importance of perseverance. These lessons will guide me as I continue my education and take on greater responsibilities in my career.
Ultimately, I see my education as a tool to create a ripple effect of positive change. By combining medical expertise, community advocacy, and mentorship, I hope to leave a lasting impact on the lives of children and families in my community, contributing to a healthier and brighter future for all.
John J Costonis Scholarship
My ultimate goal is to become a pediatrician, combining my passion for science with my desire to help others. I envision a future where I can provide compassionate care to children, supporting their health and well-being while addressing challenges specific to underserved communities. This goal is rooted in my love for biological sciences and my belief in the importance of giving back to society.
To work toward this goal, I have immersed myself in rigorous academic preparation and sought opportunities to contribute to my community. I am currently pursuing an associate degree in biological sciences, focusing on building a strong foundation for medical school. Alongside my studies, I have gained experience by volunteering as a homework assistant for young children. This role has taught me the patience, empathy, and problem-solving skills necessary for working with children. Additionally, I volunteer at a cancer clinic, which gives me insight into the healthcare field and the importance of providing compassionate support to patients. I also volunteer at events at my community college, which has allowed me to engage with diverse groups and develop my ability to collaborate and contribute to my academic environment.
I am also deeply committed to personal growth. Over the years, I have worked hard to overcome my natural introversion, pushing myself to build connections and take on leadership roles. This has not only improved my confidence but has also prepared me to face the interpersonal challenges of a career in medicine.
Pursuing higher education has come with its share of hardships, and I anticipate more challenges along the way. As a first-generation immigrant, navigating the complexities of the American education system has been a steep learning curve. From understanding college applications to figuring out financial aid, every step has required persistence and self-reliance. Adjusting to a new culture while excelling academically has also been demanding, as I’ve had to balance adapting socially with maintaining my focus on my studies.
Another significant challenge is the financial burden of higher education. Medical school is a long and expensive journey, and I know that balancing the cost of tuition with everyday expenses will require sacrifices. However, I am determined to persevere through these difficulties by seeking scholarships, working part-time if necessary, and managing my finances responsibly.
Time management is another hurdle I’ve faced and will continue to face. Balancing a demanding academic schedule with personal responsibilities requires discipline and careful planning. To address this, I’ve developed a habit of setting daily goals and maintaining a to-do list, which has helped me stay organized and focused.
Despite these challenges, I remain steadfast in my pursuit of my goals. Each obstacle I’ve faced so far has strengthened my resolve and taught me valuable lessons about resilience and adaptability. I am confident that my dedication, combined with the support of my community and the skills I’ve developed, will enable me to achieve my dreams and make a meaningful impact in the lives of others.

Overcoming obstacles has been a recurring theme in my life, especially as a first-generation immigrant navigating the challenges of a new country. One of the most significant obstacles I faced was the transition to life in the United States. My family moved here in search of better opportunities, and while the prospect of a fresh start was exciting, the reality of adapting to a new culture, school system, and social environment was daunting. For weeks, I felt like an outsider—self-conscious about my accent, unfamiliar with the cultural nuances, and hesitant to engage with others.
Instead of giving in to the overwhelming sense of insecurity, I made a conscious decision to adapt and grow. I reminded myself of past challenges I had overcome, such as my transformation in high school from a shy, reserved student to a confident and proactive one. I began by setting small goals each day: initiating conversations with classmates, participating in group discussions, and volunteering for school activities. Slowly but surely, I built connections and found my footing.
This experience not only taught me the value of perseverance but also reinforced my belief in the importance of taking initiative—a quality that has shaped my approach to leadership.
I’ve demonstrated leadership in various aspects of my life, particularly in academics and community involvement. In high school, I became a mentor to struggling classmates, offering guidance on both academic and personal challenges. My own journey of self-improvement inspired me to encourage others to push past their limitations. For example, I once helped a classmate who was struggling with math by organizing weekly study sessions. Over time, her confidence grew, and she went from failing grades to passing with flying colors.
Leadership, to me, is not about commanding attention but about inspiring and uplifting others. This principle guided me when I volunteered at a local pet adoption center and as a homework assistant for younger children. In these roles, I learned the importance of patience, empathy, and clear communication. Helping children grasp new concepts and watching them light up with understanding reminded me why I’m passionate about making a difference.
One of my proudest leadership moments occurred during a group project where team dynamics were strained due to conflicting ideas. As the unofficial mediator, I encouraged open dialogue, ensuring that everyone’s perspective was heard. By finding common ground, we completed the project successfully, and the experience taught me the importance of collaboration and problem-solving in leadership.
Each of these experiences has reinforced my belief in the power of resilience and the value of leading by example. Overcoming obstacles has not only shaped my character but has also shown me that challenges are opportunities to grow and inspire others. As I continue my journey, I strive to embody these lessons in every aspect of my life, using them to create a positive impact on the world around me.
Maggie's Way- International Woman’s Scholarship
As a first-generation immigrant and aspiring STEM professional, I resonate deeply with the challenges Malgorzata “Maggie” Kwiecien faced and the spirit she embodied. Like Maggie, I moved to the United States with my family in search of better opportunities. The transition was both exciting and intimidating, marked by cultural adjustments and the challenge of building a new life from scratch. Her story inspires me because of her resilience, determination, and pursuit of excellence, traits I strive to embody every day.
Moving to the U.S. was not easy. I found myself navigating unfamiliar systems, cultural differences, and the overwhelming sense of starting over in a new country. For the first few weeks, I was hesitant to speak up, afraid that my accent or unfamiliarity with American customs would make me stand out in an awkward way. But I knew I couldn’t let these fears hold me back. Drawing on lessons from my earlier experiences, I pushed myself to adapt and embrace my new environment. I overcame my insecurities by actively engaging with others, building relationships, and focusing on personal growth—qualities I admire in Maggie’s journey.
Maggie’s intellectual boldness and drive to master her passions remind me of my own academic journey. As a student, I’ve always been drawn to challenges that push me to grow intellectually and personally. When I was younger, I was a shy, quiet student who avoided risks, but over time, I learned to embrace them. By the time I reached high school, I was not only excelling academically but also mentoring others and taking on leadership roles in group projects. Like Maggie, I strive to be a lifelong learner and to become an expert in my chosen field, biological sciences, with aspirations of working in pediatrics.
Beyond academics, Maggie’s adventurous spirit is something I admire and relate to. While I may not have climbed mountains or dived into oceans, I’ve embraced my own set of challenges, particularly in adapting to a new culture, building a community, and finding my voice. These experiences have taught me the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and staying true to my goals, no matter the obstacles.
Like Maggie, I am deeply committed to my education and am passionate about STEM. I believe in the power of knowledge to create change and am dedicated to using my education to make a positive impact on others. Maggie’s legacy motivates me to keep pushing boundaries, both in academics and in life, and to pursue my dreams with courage and determination.
I aspire to follow Maggie’s example by not only excelling in my field but also inspiring others through my journey. Her story is a powerful reminder that no matter how daunting the challenges, resilience, passion, and hard work can pave the way to success. I hope to honor her legacy by embracing the same strength and determination she demonstrated throughout her life.
Sabrina Carpenter Superfan Scholarship
As a young girl, I admired Sabrina Carpenter for her role as Maya Hart in Girl Meets World. Maya was such a relatable and funny character—confident yet vulnerable, and her journey resonated with me deeply. Her portrayal gave me comfort during a time when I, like many others, was navigating the ups and downs of growing up. I also loved her Disney-era music, which was fun, lighthearted, and perfectly matched to her youthful charm.
The next time Sabrina Carpenter came into my life was during quarantine when her song “Thumbs” gained popularity. I instantly connected with it—not only because of its catchy tune but because of its meaningful message about breaking free from societal monotony. That song became the gateway to her discography, and I began exploring her music in depth. With each song, I fell more in love with her artistry, her witty yet heartfelt songwriting, and her endearing personality.
By 2023, Sabrina Carpenter’s music had garnered worldwide recognition, and her fanbase had grown exponentially. I was thrilled to see so many people embracing her work because it felt like the world was finally appreciating the talent I had admired for years. Her latest album, short n sweet, is my current favorite, and songs like "Juno," "Slim Pickins," and "Bed Chem" have found a permanent spot in my playlist. I often catch myself humming them throughout the day—they’re the kind of songs that stick with you, not just because of their melodies but because they feel personal and honest.
What I admire most about Sabrina Carpenter is her resilience and grace under pressure. Achieving the level of fame she has is no small feat, and it takes immense courage, discipline, and stamina to keep going. Despite being in the public eye and facing countless challenges, she has remained authentic, grounded, and passionate about her work.
I missed the opportunity to see her live when she toured in my state, but I hope to one day attend one of her shows. There’s something inspiring about seeing an artist you’ve admired for so long perform their heart out on stage. Sabrina Carpenter has shown me the power of perseverance and creativity, and her music continues to inspire me to embrace who I am and pursue my passions unapologetically.

My name is Sanduki Premaratne, and I am a first-generation immigrant driven by a passion for growth, learning, and helping others. My journey has been shaped by challenges that taught me resilience, empathy, and the value of making meaningful connections. Through these experiences, I’ve developed a deep desire to make a positive impact on the world, starting with the people around me and extending to larger communities through my career and personal efforts.
As a student, I wasn’t always outgoing or confident. I was a quiet, reserved child, often overlooked despite my abilities. However, in the tenth grade, I made the conscious decision to change. This decision stems from my experiences as a student, my interest in biological sciences, and my personal journey of overcoming challenges while helping others do the same.
Growing up, I was the quiet and reserved student who often stayed unnoticed. However, in the tenth grade, I decided to take control of my personal growth, realizing that my introversion was limiting me. I set daily goals to push myself beyond my comfort zone—initiating conversations with peers, standing up for others, and helping classmates with their studies. These small steps helped me build confidence and ultimately transformed how I saw myself. By the end of the academic year, I had earned 7A*s in my exams, received the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Award, and used my success as a platform to mentor others on self-improvement and prioritizing their goals.
This transformative period of my life taught me the value of resilience, empathy, and the power of making meaningful connections. It also shaped my approach to helping others, a skill I know is essential for a career in healthcare. My move to the United States further solidified my desire to pursue pediatrics. As an immigrant, I experienced the challenges of adjusting to a new environment, including cultural differences and the feeling of being an outsider. I was initially self-conscious about my accent and hesitant to engage with others. However, I leaned on the lessons I had learned in my earlier years, realizing that courage and persistence were key to thriving in a new setting.
Through these experiences, I developed a unique perspective on the importance of understanding and supporting others, especially those who feel out of place or vulnerable. Pediatrics stood out to me as the perfect way to combine my love for science, my drive to help others, and my ability to empathize with those in need. Children, in particular, inspire me because of their resilience and potential, and I want to play a role in shaping their well-being and growth.

Breaking Barriers Scholarship for Women
As a schoolgirl, I was the quiet one in the unnoticed corner of the classroom, silently scribbling in my notebook. I was the type of student who, when laughing at a joke, prompted others to exclaim, “See, even she’s laughing!” Shy and reserved, I was often labeled as talented but overlooked because of my introverted nature.
Everything shifted in tenth grade when I realized that staying within the confines of my introversion would only hold me back. Determined to change, I began planning my days with intention, crafting a to-do list that encouraged me to confront my fears and take small but meaningful steps. I challenged myself to initiate conversations with classmates, advocate for peers being unfairly treated, and present myself as more approachable. I offered academic help to struggling classmates, which not only enhanced their trust in me but also helped me break out of my shell. Over time, I developed a stronger sense of confidence and earned a reputation as someone who could be relied on.
While society often preaches that “other people’s opinions don’t matter,” I learned that how we present ourselves shapes not only how others perceive us but also how we see ourselves. Appearance and behavior aren’t the entirety of one’s worth, but they are stepping stones to building character and self-respect, as they were for me.
By the end of the academic year, my dedication bore fruit. I achieved 7A*s in my exams and was honored with the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Award. My success came as a surprise to friends and family, but I saw it as an opportunity to uplift others who might feel like they are trapped in their own shells. I shared my strategies for balancing self-improvement and self-care, encouraging others to embrace change and growth. Along the way, I found a supportive circle of friends who inspired one another to stay on the right path in life.
This experience became a lifeline after my family immigrated to the United States. Initially, I felt out of place, hesitant to connect with others, and deeply self-conscious about my accent. But I drew on the lessons I had learned in tenth grade: courage and persistence are essential for progress. I reminded myself that everyone carries their own challenges and that personal growth often starts when we stop fearing judgment.
Today, I view life as a larger version of school—an ongoing series of challenges that demand courage, perseverance, and self-awareness. Each year, I encounter obstacles more daunting than the last, but each year also brings opportunities to learn and grow. These experiences have taught me that life is about embracing change, and with each step forward, I create memories and growth far more valuable than my past fears.
Sangha Support Scholarship
Buddhism has been a guiding force in my life, deeply influencing my values and aspirations. I grew up in Sri Lanka, a country revered as a sacred land where the Buddha is believed to have visited three times. This deep connection to Buddhism is evident in our national calendar, which observes holidays on all 12 Poya days. These days are not only moments of religious significance but also opportunities for reflection and community gatherings. Like many Buddhist children, my brother and I attended Dhamma school every weekend, where we learned about the Buddha’s teachings and their application in everyday life. This environment, rich with spiritual and cultural traditions, nurtured my understanding of Buddhism and instilled a lifelong commitment to its principles. I am forever grateful to my parents for immersing me in this faith, which has become a moral compass and a source of inner peace.
For me, Buddhism is more than a religion—it is a way of life and a guide to navigating the complexities of the modern world. Its teachings emphasize the importance of contentment, compassion, and mindfulness. From an early age, I learned that true happiness is not rooted in material wealth or external achievements but in inner satisfaction and peace of mind. By observing the five precepts daily, I strive to live with integrity, kindness, and awareness. These precepts encourage me to cultivate loving-kindness, or metta, not just towards others but also towards myself. They remind me to approach every situation with empathy and patience, values that have profoundly shaped my personal and professional aspirations.
The lessons I have learned from Buddhism have played a central role in my decision to pursue a career in medicine. I believe that becoming a doctor aligns closely with the principles of loving-kindness and compassion. Healing others is not only a way to contribute to society but also a means of practicing the selflessness and empathy emphasized in my faith. Through medicine, I hope to alleviate physical and emotional suffering, embodying the values of my religion in a practical and meaningful way. I view my future career as an opportunity to serve others and as a step on my own spiritual journey toward personal growth and fulfillment.
Once I graduate, I hope to give back to my Buddhist community in meaningful ways. I plan to remain actively involved in my local temple, participating in its activities, supporting its needs, and fostering the sense of unity that has always been a hallmark of our faith. I also aspire to engage in acts of dhana, or selfless giving, as a way to express gratitude to the community that has shaped me. Whether through volunteering at temple events, providing free medical care to underserved populations, or simply offering kindness to those in need, I aim to live by the principles of Buddhism. These actions will allow me to contribute to the well-being of my community while deepening my own spiritual practice.
Buddhism continues to be a source of guidance and inspiration, helping me navigate life’s challenges with resilience and mindfulness. As I pursue my dreams, I carry the teachings of my faith with me, striving to make a positive difference in the world while walking the middle path. I hope that my journey, rooted in compassion and service, will not only bring me closer to achieving my goals but also contribute to a more harmonious and compassionate society.
