I knew that psychiatric nursing would be my interest even before I started my student nursing career. As a single mother who has experienced mental health issues, I understand the shame, annoyance, and even self-hatred that frequently accompany mental illness. Individuals with mental health disorders present to us in their most vulnerable states, such as depression or psychosis, addiction, or anxiety. Some patients are genuinely hopeless about ever getting better and are just trying to find some kind of relief from their suffering. Others because they are at last prepared to overcome their addiction or because they are going through their first psychotic episode. I want to have the privilege of taking care of patients who feel as though they have nowhere else to go and are broken spiritually, mentally and emotionally.

As a survivor of child sexual abuse, I masked my depression, anxiety and PTSD for many years. For so many years I let my father control every aspect of my well-being and finally decided enough was enough. At age 16 I decided that once and for all I had to take a stand for myself and my mental health and put an end to this horrific abuse I endured. After months of investigation my father was found guilty of all counts of sexual abuse that I had been victimized to for the last eight years of my life and was sentenced to prison until 2032. Shortly after his sentencing it was then that I noticed my life really taking a downward spiral and unfortunately, I let my mental health go by the wayside. It wasn’t until I was in my mid 20’s that I knew I needed help. As a single mother to two young children, I knew that it was important for me to take back control of my life, for myself but more so for my children who still need me more than anything.
My experiences with mental health have significantly influenced my career aspirations. Witnessing the essential role mental health professionals played and continue to play in my recovery has inspired me to pursue a career in this field. I want the opportunity to provide the necessary love and care that underserved populations do not always receive. Regardless of their situation, I will not judge any patient I encounter because I too know what it feels like to fight these battles mentally that not everyone understands. I am motivated to become a psychiatric nurse who can provide guidance, support, and compassion to those in underserved populations. Furthermore, my encounters with mental health have also led me to recognize the broader implications mental health has on society, particularly within underserved populations. This has directed my career aspirations towards advocacy work, striving to increase access to mental health services for underserved populations, and working towards social change and improved mental health policies. My experiences with mental health have undoubtedly shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. The challenges I have faced have instilled a deep understanding and compassion for those living with mental health conditions. I have learned that our struggles with mental health do not define us, but rather, they create an opportunity for growth, resilience, and a chance to make a positive impact in the lives of others.

Throughout my seven years of medical experience my most fulfilling and rewarding years were the four years I spent working for an FQHC. As a newly single mother to a newborn, I felt a sense of loss and confusion. Unsure of what I wanted in life and where exactly my bumpy road was going to lead me, I stumbled upon a local FQHC that was in search of a Medical Assistant. Shortly after interviewing I was heart struck by the mission of their organization and the population they served and knew this was where I wanted to be. In 2019 I accepted the position, and it was then that I knew I had a deeper drive and passion to give back to the underserved and provide them with the medical care they deserve regardless of their income or life choices, but as their nurse. Throughout my employment with the FQHC I gained strength, knowledge, empathy, motivation, and humbleness. In the first three years I worked there, I worked for a provider who was actively involved in our MAT (medication-assisted treatment) program. MAT is helpful in treating opioid use disorders (OUD) and may also help some patients maintain recovery, involving pharmaceuticals and behavioral and counseling therapies. Within our organization, we provided patients with programs like MAT to help them overcome their struggles while also providing them with a wide range of other medical and behavioral health services. Regardless of a patient’s income or living situation we never turned anyone away. Shortly after my third year of employment within the organization, I was recognized for my knowledge, leadership, and motivation to give back to our community and was promoted to our Lead Medical Assistant role. It was then when I knew I had a purpose deep within to do more and become the nurse I have always dreamed of being. Six years ago, I faced a battle I never thought I would. Whether you feel alone in your desire to return to college, it can be terrifying. One thing that separates single parents from other nontraditional students in higher education is the multitude of challenges they must overcome. Parenting by yourself is a difficult job. Having to balance your personal life, career, finances, and parenting all by yourself takes a great deal of fortitude, endurance, and kindness. For me, as a single parent, getting financial support is one of the biggest obstacles. Money is a major resource for raising children, since it is needed for everything from their schooling and extracurricular activities to meeting their basic needs for clothing, food, and shelter. Single parents like me often struggle to make ends meet with just one income source. Ultimately, receiving this scholarship would be more than a blessing. It would allow me to provide additional care after hours that daycare cannot fulfil while I am in clinicals and class three days a week. As a pursing psychiatric nurse, there are several passions and interests that drive me in in my career choice and that will make my work fulfilling and meaningful. I want to be able to provide advocacy, crisis interventions, and empowerment to my patients who will face these defeats. Six years ago, I faced a battle I never thought I would. It wasn’t until I was in my mid 20’s that I knew I needed help. As a single mother to two young children, I knew that it was important for me to take back control of my life, for myself but more so for my children who still need me more than anything.
Thadford Dickerson and Paula Schuman Scholar Award
My life goals include getting involved in mental health advocacy efforts to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote access to mental health services in my community or on a broader scale and ultimately, strive to make a positive impact on the lives of my patients by providing compassionate, evidence-based care, advocating for their needs, and empowering them on their journey to recovery and well-being. My experiences with mental health have significantly influenced my career aspirations. Witnessing the essential role mental health professionals play in my recovery has inspired me to pursue a career in this field. I am motivated to become a mental health nurse who can provide guidance, support, and compassion to those in need. My personal connection to mental health challenges will serve as a source of empathy and understanding, allowing me to connect with patients on a deeper level. Furthermore, my encounters with mental health have also led me to recognize the broader implications mental health has on society, particularly within marginalized communities. By challenging societal stigmas, fostering meaningful relationships, and pursuing a career in mental health, I aim to contribute to a more inclusive, empathetic society where mental well-being is prioritized. Through my personal journey, I have learned that our struggles with mental health do not define us, but rather, they create an opportunity for growth, resilience, and a chance to make a positive impact in the lives of others. I want to be able to continue to further my education to not only pave a way for a better, more comfortable life but, to be able to show my two young children that regardless of any bump in the road you may face in life that through prayer, hard work, and perseverance anything is possible! I truly believe that I have not only the determination to be a nurse but the drive and passion that it takes to wake up every morning and put one foot in front of the other and share my life experiences with individuals who struggles with the same things I have struggled with and continue to struggle with. I am passionate about providing the most heartfelt care to each individual patient I will encounter throughout my career. Thank you for taking the time to review my essay as well as allowing for an opportunity to allow students like me the ability to continue their education.

As a survivor of child sexual abuse, I masked my depression, anxiety & PTSD for many years. It wasn’t until I was in my mid 20’s that I knew I needed help. Throughout those six years I have had many, many, lows but also many great days. I know how it feels to feel like you’re at your lowest, that no one understands and maybe there are no better days but, there are. With the love and support from family and a well regimented medication schedule I have not completely recovered from my diagnosis, but I am able to manage them and live a much better life. As a single mother to two young children, I knew that it was important for me to take back control of my life, for myself but more so for my children who still need me more than anything! WinnerWhether you feel alone in your desire to return to college, it can be terrifying. As a single mother to two young children, I knew that it was important for me to take back control of my life, for myself but more so for my children who still need me more than anything! My experiences with mental health have significantly influenced my career aspirations. Witnessing the essential role mental health professionals play in my recovery has inspired me to pursue a career in this field. I am motivated to become a mental health nurse who can provide guidance, support, & compassion to those in need. My personal connection to mental health challenges will serve as a source of empathy and understanding, allowing me to connect with patients on a deeper level. Furthermore, my encounters with mental health have also led me to recognize the broader implications mental health has on society, particularly within marginalized communities. This has directed my career aspirations towards advocacy work, striving to increase access to mental health services for underserved populations, & working towards social change and improved mental health policies. My experiences with mental health have undoubtedly shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. The challenges I have faced have instilled a deep understanding and compassion for those living with mental health conditions. Through my personal journey, I have learned that our struggles with mental health do not define us, but rather, they create an opportunity for growth, resilience, & a chance to make a positive impact in the lives of others. I want to be able to continue to further my education to not only pave a way for a better, more comfortable life but, to be able to show my two young children that regardless of any bump in the road you may face in life that through prayer, hard work, and perseverance anything is possible!

I want to be able to continue to further my education to not only pave a way for a better, more comfortable life but, to be able to show my two young children that regardless of any bump in the road you may face in life that through prayer, hard work, and perseverance anything is possible!

My life goals include; getting involved in mental health advocacy efforts to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote access to mental health services in my community or on a broader scale and ultimately, strive to make a positive impact on the lives of my patients by providing compassionate, evidence-based care, advocating for their needs, and empowering them on their journey to recovery and well-being. Furthermore, my encounters with mental health have also led me to recognize the broader implications mental health has on society, particularly within marginalized communities. My experiences with mental health have significantly influenced my career aspirations. Witnessing the essential role mental health professionals play in my recovery has inspired me to pursue a career in this field.
