Learner Education Women in Mathematics Scholarship
Growing up, mathematics continuously gauged my interests by providing intellectual stimulation and a satisfying sense of personal achievement. As I continued my academic journey, I was able to explore the real-world applications math provided as well. Courses such as physics allowed me to appreciate mathematical concepts on a larger scale, demonstrating how many daily concepts can be computed with simple calculations.
Mathematics is a subject that I feel has always come easy to me, and I take pleasure in the experience of understanding a concept for the first time. I have also found gratification in sharing my knowledge with others looking to learn. As a senior in biomedical engineering, I have had the luxury of assisting students in an academic environment through my university's "Emerging Scholars Program". This program allows students to act as teaching assistants for professors; helping students with assignments during a workshop and/or through office hours. My involvement in this program strengthened my passion for math because it allowed me to educate other students about mathematical concepts, and the significance of those concepts. It also improved my own understanding of the principles we were learning; as I was explaining information to students, it was reinforcing the ideas I already knew, hardening the knowledge I previously gained. Beyond my developing passion for mathematics, the quantification and precision of the subject have allowed me to utilize these principles in the real world.
As an engineer, I have taken a variety of mathematics-based courses: differential equations and matrix algebra, statics, physics, statistics, etc. When it comes to subjects such as statics and physics, we -- as engineers -- are able to calculate shear stress, bending moments, torsion, and other essential data for various uses. In biomedical engineering, the applications of statics allow engineers to precisely calculate the maximum load a prosthetic can withstand, and allow adjustments to be made based on a user's needs. When it comes to statistics, mathematical calculations are essential for hypothesis testing and solving for statistical significances. These calculations allow researchers to verify their data and deem it reliable. The ability to understand these principles of mathematics has strengthened my appreciation for the accuracy they provide in real-world calculation. As a society, we are capable of quantifying data in numerous ways, which have progressed modern research and societal structure.
Mathematics has been a continuous building block in my interests. The stimulation drawn from the subject, the real-world applications I adopted, and the sense of personal achievement earned along the way built me to be the individual I am now. These concepts guided me to pursue a career in engineering and further, a discipline in the biomedical field. They also allowed me to explore the opportunity of teaching other individuals the principles that gauged my interest from the beginning.
Dr. William and Jo Sherwood Family Scholarship
"Going to school without working a full-time job is the best thing you can do for yourself and your long-term career." My mother emphasizes this point to me when I need to be reminded of the progress I have made at college. I alone am paying for my tuition and all other costs associated with college, and my family's financial situation has created obstacles as I pursue ways to cover the costs of college. That is why receiving this scholarship would affect me positively and benefit my future.
Not only would it alleviate the financial burden of paying for college, but it would also allow me to focus on my studies and extracurricular activities without the constant stress of worrying about how I will pay for tuition and other expenses. I believe that this scholarship would be a turning point in my academic journey and would open up many doors of opportunity for my future.
In addition to the financial benefits, receiving this scholarship would also validate all of the hard work and dedication that I have put into my studies. It would be a tangible recognition of my efforts and would motivate me to continue striving for excellence in all areas of my life.
In 2025 I will graduate with a bachelor's in biomedical engineering; with this degree, I hope to improve people's lives by advancing and creating medical technology. My goal post-graduation is to work with 3D-Bioprinting in order to create viable 3D-printed organs from biocompatible plastic and human cells for organ transplants. 3D-Bioprinting is still a work in progress, but it possesses the capability of savings thousands each year who die to a lack of viable organs for transplants. Additionally, I hope to conduct research and study cell regeneration as I work on progressing medical technology, and the field of biomedical engineering holds great potential for advancing such high tech. I am confident that this scholarship will provide me with the necessary foundation to achieve my dreams and make a difference in the world.
In conclusion, receiving this scholarship would be a life-changing opportunity for me and would greatly benefit my future. It would allow me to focus on my studies, reduce financial stress, and provide me with the tools and resources to make a positive impact in the medical field and aid the people that rely on the advancements of medical technology. Thank you for considering my application.
Elevate Women in Technology Scholarship
Technology continues to be an innovational aspect of our lives, evolving and changing in ways we never thought possible. These technologies are able to improve the way in which our society functions, making many opportunities more accessible and convenient, as well as expanding and strengthening individuals' abilities. One technology that I find inspirational is the invention of 3-D Bioprinting, which would allow for the creation and printing of artificial organs. This piece of technology is still a great work in progress, but as it continues to expand, it opens several doors for the medical industry and its ability to provide organ transplants for those that need them when organic donors are not available.
I find this piece of technology so inspirational because of what it is able to do for the future of medicine. The absence of organ donors is a tremendous issue in the United States and across the world, resulting in the death of thousands of individuals every year. With something so unique as 3-D Bioprinting, many unnecessary deaths could be prevented.
I'm beginning my studies of biomedical engineering at Wayne State University this year, aiming to complete my degree with a concentration in biomechanics. With this objective in mind, I intend to explore the possibilities of 3-D Bioprinting and expand the horizons of producing artificial organs. My objective for working within the field of biomedical engineering is to aid in improving the quality of life of individuals who require such unique medical attention.
As 3-D Bioprinting improves within the future, there will continue to be more opportunities for improving medical technology and improving the quality of life for individuals with special physical needs.
Dynamic Edge Women in STEM Scholarship
There are many inventions that have entered the world in the last decade, creating a tremendous impact on the way society functions, and enhancing people's individual abilities. Some of my favorite pieces of technology include self-driving cars, which enable the ability for people to travel individually where they may have needed assistance otherwise, as well as the increased development of electric vehicles, which allow for consumers to travel in a more environmentally friendly manor.
My favorite piece of technology, however, is the creation of 3-D Bioprinting. This tech invention is still a great work in progress, but it opens the doors for the medical field immensely. Organ donors can be hard to come by, and finding a donor that meets all the criteria for a donation can be an even more difficult struggle. The creation of 3-D Bioprinting enables the medical industry to create viable organs from biocompatible plastic and human cells for organ transplants. Thousands die each year from a lack of viable donor organs, so the production of organs from scraps for transplants is a beautiful and amazing creation that is still a work in progress.
I hope to contribute to the world through my studies and pending career by extending the technology of 3-D Bioprinting, as I'm currently studying towards a degree in Biomedical Engineering. I would love to expand on 3-D Bioprinting as well as improving prosthetics for those who suffer from physical disabilities. In this field, I'd love to work with the human body in order to improve the quality of life for those that require medical attention. I am also intrigued to learn more about cancer treatments as well, and how to improve the way in which we identify cancer cells, and developing more efficient ways of treating patients with cancer.
The field of Biomedical Engineering is a growing field, and in great need of people within that field. The production of technology to provide people with the means to live independently is extremely important in our growing society. Technology to create advanced resources for those in desperate need of them is just as important in our society as well. All of these technological advancements provide a great deal of opportunities for people looking for work, as well of those on the recipient end looking for progressive treatments and alternatives to distasteful options.
In all, the progression of technology continues to be useful day-to-day in our society, and I hope to one day contribute to this progression of technological advancement as I indulge myself in the field of Biomedical Engineering.
