Janie Mae "Loving You to Wholeness" Scholarship
I am a product of the Atlanta, GA metro area, where I witnessed my childhood community undergo a slow decline into almost desolation. Abandoned and uninhabitable homes are visible in the neighborhood, yet those who remained has taken pride in preserving the beauty of their residences and the community at large. Growing up, I consistently questioned my parents about ways we could contribute to the betterment of our community, unknowingly igniting a passion within me that continues to drive my actions today. During my high school years, I volunteered with local organizations and volunteer groups geared towards addressing our community's pressing issues and needs. Serving as a dedicated volunteer for Hands On Atlanta, Hosea Feed The Hungry, and Habitat for Humanity, particularly painting projects, has solidified my commitment to driving positive change. After college, I intend to further my efforts towards community enhancement by participating in the neighborhood watch, lending a hand at food banks, and, ideally, establishing a nonprofit aimed at beautifying my community. In 2023, I happily contributed to planting bushes and flowers alongside other residents at the entrance of my community. Although it was not much, the transformation can still be seen, which continues to leave a sense of gratification within me, knowing that I played a pivotal role in enhancing the beauty of my community. I also took on the role of tutoring younger children in math and art at our community center, at various times during high school. By volunteering, my objective has been to leave a lasting impact on the kids and the community, as a whole, by helping our future leaders. And by sharing my knowledge and skills with others, my goal is to leave a positive impact on everyone I meet. One of my aspirations is to organize free workshops at the community center to teach basic design principles or how to use design software. This will help my community develop more skills and build confidence in their abilities. It is my vision to unite residents in revitalizing our community through collaborative efforts to support local businesses. I firmly believe this holds the key to job creation, economic stimulation, and fostering a collective sense of pride as we witness growth within our community. Embracing the role of an advocate for positive change, I plan to attend city council meetings to ensure my voice is heard. In the Fall 2024, I will be entering college at North Carolina A&T, so I can pursue a higher education. Despite my passion for the community and to art and math, I recognize that financial assistance is crucial to achieving my goals. My family faces financial challenges that make it difficult for me to afford the full cost of my education. The Janie Mae "Loving You to Wholeness" Scholarship would not only ease the financial burden on my family but also allow me to focus more on my studies and professional development.

I plan to make a positive impact on society by advocating social justice. One of the social justice issues that mean the most to me is racial equality. In today's society, racial discrimination and systemic racism continue to disproportionately affect many people who are BIPOC. As a person of color, I have firsthand experience of the impacts of racial inequality. This issue has affected me since birth. The reason being, my mother named me 'Ryan' to help shield me from discrimination based on my race or gender. Although I disliked my name until recently, I understand the reasoning behind naming me “Ryan”. The issue of social justice is particularly important to me because I believe that everyone, regardless of their race or ethnicity, should be treated with dignity, respect, and fairness. It hurts my heart that some people see me as just a “color” and not as a talented “individual”. Racial equality is not just a goal, but a necessity for a truly fair and just society. I think it is important to get involved in social justice issues because they affect us all. By advocating for social justice, we can help create a society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. As a future graphic designer, I believe that art and design can be powerful tools for social change. Through my work, I hope to raise awareness about social justice issues and inspire others to take action. I aim to use my art to increase awareness about important social and environmental issues. As a black individual, I find profound love and pride in my identity, rooted in the depths of my heritage and the strength of my people. Being black is a connection to a heritage forged through struggle and triumph. It means understanding the resilience of those who came before me, who faced unimaginable challenges with unwavering courage and determination. From the shores of Africa to the plantations of the Americas, from the civil rights movement to the present day, the journey of black people is one of resilience in the face of oppression, injustice, and adversity. One of the social justice issues that mean the most to me is racial equality. Art has always been a profound passion of mine, serving as a powerful means of expression and connection with the world around me. From a young age, I found joy in creating art, whether through painting, drawing, or sculpting. As I grew older, my passion for the arts deepened, and I began to see its potential to inspire, provoke thought, and evoke emotions in others. One of the primary ways I intend to use my career in art to inspire others is by creating work that people will find meaningful on a deep and personal level. I believe that art has the power to rise above language and cultural barriers that can unite us all. Through my art, I hope to spark wonder and curiosity in viewers, clients, etc, encouraging them to see the world in new and unexpected ways. Throughout my academic journey, I have actively sought opportunities to sharpen my skills and gain real-world experience. For example, I have taken on freelance projects to gain experience. These experiences have not only helped me improve my design skills but have also given me a glimpse into the professional world of graphic design. I aim to use my art to increase awareness about important social and environmental issues. I believe that artists have a unique ability to shine a light on pressing issues and provoke meaningful conversations. Growing up as an only child, I found it challenging at times. While my classmates shared stories of weekends spent with siblings, my eyes would often glow as I imagined what life would be like with a sibling or someone my age to share that close bond with. At the age of 10, I joined Campbell Junior Spartans. I saw this opportunity as great way to make more friends, strengthen bonds, and gain a sense of inclusion since I didn’t have a sibling of my own. Little did I know, the experience would offer me much more than that. Cheerleading became a platform for me to build my character, boost my confidence, and realize my strength by challenging me to grow physically and mentally from within. After practice and on the weekends, I practiced day after day on my air track in my backyard. Cheerleading allowed me to showcase my talent in tumbling, which ignited a passion within me. It taught me the importance of setting goals and persevering through challenges, even when frustration sets in. The sport taught me patience and a mental toughness that I later found invaluable in navigating through school and tough times. On January 11, 2024, I was involved in a serious car accident. My wrist was sprained, and I had a deep cut to my hand, almost losing my thumb. On my way to the hospital, I asked my mom “is my season over”. She responded, “well you may not be able to flip for the remainder of the season, but you will return before the season is over”. Optimistic about returning, I attended practices and games although I was unable to be on the court at the time. After a few weeks and still in pain, I put my uniform back on refusing to let the injury dictate the end of my high school cheerleading journey. On February 2, 2024, I returned to the place where I belonged…on the court next to my teammates and it felt GOOD! In Fall 2024, I will be entering an HBCU called North Carolina A&T. I recognize that financial assistance is crucial to achieving my goals. My parents were reluctant to allow me to go out of state due to tuition being 5 times higher than that of an in-state student. My family faces financial challenges that make it difficult for me to afford the full cost of my education. Receiving a scholarship to college would be an invaluable opportunity for me, providing not only financial support but also opening doors to a brighter future. As someone with a passion for learning and a strong desire to make a positive impact in my community, a scholarship would alleviate the financial burden of pursuing higher education and allow me to fully immerse myself in my studies. A scholarship will allow me the freedom to focus on my academic and personal growth, engaging in extracurricular activities, internships, and research opportunities that align with my interests and career goals.

Choosing a career in graphic design is not just about creating visually appealing artwork; it's about telling stories, solving problems, and making meaningful connections through design. From branding and advertising to web design and illustration, graphic designers play a crucial role in shaping how we perceive and interact with the world around us. What sets graphic design apart is its ability to transcend cultural boundaries and speak to people from all walks of life. As a black individual, being a graphic designer means using my unique perspective and experiences to create work that reflects the diversity and richness of my community. It means challenging stereotypes, amplifying marginalized voices, and advocating for social change through design. For me, being black is about resilience, pride, and empowerment. It's about honoring the struggles and triumphs of those who came before me, while also embracing the opportunities and responsibilities that come with being part of a vibrant and diverse community. Choosing to attend North Carolina A&T was a natural choice for me, as it offered a supportive and culturally affirming environment where I could thrive academically, socially, and personally. At an HBCU, I will have a sense of belonging and purpose that I have not experienced elsewhere. I will be surrounded by peers and mentors who share my background and aspirations.

Social justice makeup a wide range of issues that impact individuals, like me, and communities around the world. Because of a person’s race, gender, and/or sexual orientation, people often encounter numerous obstacles in accessing higher education, resulting in disparities in degree attainment, underrepresentation in advanced fields, and a widening wealth gap. As a high school senior with an interest in graphic design, several social justice issues resonate deeply with me due to the significance and impact on society. These issues are not only relevant but also critical for creating a more inclusive world. For many centuries, we have experienced systemic oppression, discrimination, and violence all because of our skin color. There are deep scars within communities hindering their ability to thrive and achieve their full potential. Achieving racial equality means breaking down these barriers and ensuring that every individual, regardless of their race, has equal access to opportunities, rights, and justice. It requires us to confront and challenge the ingrained prejudices and structures that perpetuate inequality, and to actively work towards a future where every Black person is treated with dignity, respect, and equity. Another social justice issue that is important to me is LGBTQ+ rights. As a supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, I believe that everyone should have the right to love who they want to love and be their authentic selves without fear of discrimination or violence. LGBTQ+ individuals deserve the same rights and opportunities as everyone else, and I believe it is important to advocate for their rights and support their inclusion in all aspects of society. Additionally, gender equality is a social justice issue that is dear to my heart. Many females around the world continue to face gender-based discrimination and violence. Gender equality is not only a human right but also essential for achieving sustainable development and building a more peaceful world. I encourage others to join me in challenging stereotypes and discrimination based on gender, and promoting an inclusive society where all individuals can freely pursue their aspirations.

My mother is the most influential person in my life. Her strength, independence, sacrifices, and dedication to me while holding a fast-paced full-time position as a legal assistant. Watching her has shaped me into the person I am today. Growing up, I witnessed my mother juggle multiple responsibilities effortlessly. Despite facing various challenges, she always remained strong and resilient. Her unwavering determination to provide the best for our family has been a constant source of inspiration for me. One of the most admirable qualities my mother possesses is her independence. She has always believed in the importance of self-reliance and has instilled in me the value of independence. Her ability to handle any situation with grace and composure has taught me the importance of staying calm and collected in the face of adversity. My mother has made countless sacrifices for our family. She has put her own needs aside to ensure that I have everything we need to succeed. Her selflessness and willingness to put others before herself have shown me the true meaning of sacrifice and unconditional love. Despite her demanding full-time position, my mother has always made time for our family. Whether it was attending my school events, helping me with homework, or simply being there to listen, she has always been my biggest supporter. Her dedication to her job and her family has taught me the importance of balancing work and family life. My mother also taught me how to be resilient during tough time. On January 11, 2024, I was involved in a serious car accident. My wrist was sprained and I had a deep cut to my hand almost losing my thumb. On my way to the hospital, I asked my mom “is my season over”. She responded “well you may not be able to flip for the remainder of the season, you will return before the season is over”. On February 2, 2024, I returned to the place where I belonged…on the court next to my teammates. Although I have limitations, it felt good to cheer for my school again. The accident, which was not my fault, imposed a significant financial burden on my parents. From the expenses of the emergency room visits to ongoing costs of physical and occupational therapy, and the potential need for surgery as my wrist remains in severe pain, the financial strain has been tough. Throughout this challenging time, my mother has remained remarkably resilient, maintaining a positive outlook and appreciating both the blessings and challenges life brings. She strives to ensure that I do not feel like a burden on my parents due to this accident, demonstrating her unwavering support and love. For the these reasons, my mother is the most influential person in my life. Her strength, independence, sacrifices, and dedication to her full-time position have shaped me into the person I am today. I am grateful for all that she has done for our family and aspire to be as strong, independent, and dedicated as she is.

From a young age, I found joy in creating art, whether through painting, drawing, or sculpting. As I grew older, my passion for the arts deepened, and I began to see its potential to inspire, provoke thought, and evoke emotions in others. As a high school senior with a passion for creativity and visual communication, my academic and career objectives are centered around pursuing a career in graphic design. Graphic design is expressive and limitless; it is a way to combine my artistic abilities with my love for storytelling. I aim to develop a strong foundation in design principles, typography, color theory, and digital tools. I also plan to explore related fields such as branding, advertising, and user experience design to broaden my skills and knowledge. Throughout my academic journey, I have actively sought opportunities to sharpen my skills and gain real-world experience. For example, I have taken on freelance projects to gain experience. These experiences have not only helped me improve my design skills but have also given me a glimpse into the professional world of graphic design. In addition to my academic and career goals, my commitment to community is an important aspect of who I am. I believe in using my skills and talents to make a positive impact on the world around me. While I like volunteering with local organizations such as Hands-On Atlanta Meal Packing, I am looking for community organizations who need assistance with designing their logos, advertising, creating posters, etc. I am always eager to contribute in any way I can. I aim to use my art to increase awareness about important social and environmental issues. I believe that artists have a unique ability to shine a light on pressing issues and provoke meaningful conversations. Whether through a thought-provoking painting, a sculpture, etc., I hope to use my art as a tool for social change and advocacy. I believe that art has the power to stir up a wide range of emotions, such as joy, sadness, anger, worries, etc. By creating art that opens up these emotions, I hope to create a space for reflection, prompting viewers to consider their own thoughts, feelings, and experiences. In my vision of a better world, art plays a central role in fostering empathy, understanding, and connection among people from diverse backgrounds. I believe that art has the power to break down barriers and build bridges between individuals and communities. Through my art, I hope to contribute to this vision by creating work that promotes dialogue, fosters empathy, and encourages connection. I believe that art has the power to create a better world by sparking wonder, increasing awareness, and fostering empathy and understanding. Through my career in art, I hope to inspire others and contribute to a more compassionate, connected, and enlightened world. Art is not just a hobby or a future career for me; it is a primary part of who I am. Art is my soul's language, a way to express the beauty and complexity of life.

My experience with mental health has been a journey of self-discovery and growth. One of the most significant impacts of my mental health journey has been on my goals. As I navigated through periods of anxiety and depression, I learned the importance of setting realistic and manageable goals. I realized that my mental health is linked to my ability to achieve these goals, and I began to prioritize self-care and mindfulness in my goal-setting process. This shift in perspective has not only helped me achieve more meaningful goals but has also improved my overall well-being. My experience with mental health has also deeply impacted my relationships. I have learned to communicate more openly and honestly with others about my mental health struggles, which has strengthened my connections with friends and family.
