Bio

Hello! I am Ryann, I am a current Junior in high school and am looking to major in Theatre Education. I am an aspiring actor, and as much as I would love to go into acting, what I have discovered is that theatre teachers make us what we are, and the relationship between theatre teachers and their students is an amazing one. It is a bond unlike one I've ever had, and I want to do that for future actors.

    Dylan's Journey Memorial Scholarship
Ryann Sims. thesims.ryann@gmail.com Dylan's Journey Memorial Scholarship NF1 and ADHD I have had twelve leg surgeries. Yes that's right and here's why; I was diagnosed with NF1 as a baby. My mom noticed my cafe au lait spots and became curious. She learned that she would need to closely monitor my development and growth. At the young age of five, I broke my leg and we learned that I had a bone deformity in my left leg, a result that would lead to many leg surgeries. We also learned that I have ADHD, which would cause many struggles throughout my elementary years. Due to breaking my leg the day before kindergarten started, I came into school late, and I did not fit in with the others. I couldn’t process the way they taught there, and I did not have any friends, being the only child in a wheelchair, I could not play with the other children. My first surgery was putting in hardware to slow down the growth of my left leg. From then on, I had surgeries taking out one or two screws to help even out my legs, until freshman year when I had my final surgery. Through all those years, my surgery caused me to miss out on all kinds of fun. As a freshman I decided to join theatre with my older sister, she was an exceptional role model for me. Theatre helped me make many new friends, and really brought me out of my shell. I experienced my first musical in the ensemble, and began to see why my sister loved this art so much. My sister guided me and showed me the ropes of high school. My sister graduated and moved away for college. I was on my own. Now, nearing the end of my junior year, I can see that I am a new person, I am no longer as shy, or quiet as I once was, I no longer need surgeries. I want to pursue an education in theatre education or acting, although I have not yet decided where I want to attend college, but I will be attending in the fall of 2025. This scholarship would help me pay for wherever I plan to go. I want to go to college so I can properly learn life skills and find my path in life. My experience in theatre at Juan Diego Catholic High School taught me that the kindest people can be found in the most random places, and theatre has saved the lives of many. My director has made this year so amazing, and I want to do that for future aspiring actors. The difference I can make is showing future young minds how theatre can change a life, and I dream to inspire future generations of actors and actresses.
