Bold Generosity Matters Scholarship
My father is the most generous man I know. He acts as a well of guidance for my household and others. Of all his sayings, he frequently references a popular quote: "this too shall pass." This simple, yet powerful quote unfailingly sparks altruism. Surely, sharing this message's personal impact may give insight into my favorite ways to help.
African American/Black students, already underserved, disproportionately suffer amidst COVID-19's presence. "This too shall pass" is both a strengthening affirmation and a call to action. As Fullerton College's A2MEND Vice President, I promote this sentiment's actionability. We've initiated accessible Zoom spaces for students to connect, decompress, and study. It's important to demonstrate that turbulent periods end - a prompt, uplifting notion.
As an Associated Students Senator, I volunteer on the Student Equity and Achievement Committee. We involve students, faculty, and government officials to ensure all students have a fair opportunity to achieve. These efforts can be depleting. Referencing "this too shall pass" brings calmness during important campaigns. With patience, we've recently accomplished making Orange County bus rides free for students!
Glaucoma has recently taken most of my father’s vision. He no longer reads text messages, drives, or walks unfamiliar areas alone. Seeing my father - a man once proudly independent - struggle is heartbreaking. I respond by driving him, reading his messages, and guiding him through the once recognizable world. Despite obstacles, "this too shall pass" instills optimism during adversity.
I intend to perpetuate this quote's spirit after graduation. I study to write for television - an accessible medium that brings much needed comfort. If awarded the scholarship, I would use it to cover tuition at the school I transfer to. I intend to use storytelling to help others during rough seasons. Whatever their struggle, I hope to impart my father's words.
Bold Optimist Scholarship
Blue hair, bracelets, and brotherhood are things that I regularly depend on. Understandably, one may ask the following: what commonality do these words share? They are present in my sources of happiness. Maintaining a positive inner life is especially difficult in times like these. Fortunately, these three unlikely subjects anchor my being, especially in rough seasons.
Tyler the Creator, my favorite artist, recorded lyrics that have influenced me. "Tell these black kids they can be who they are; dye your hair blue, I'll do it too." This quote has empowered me. My dyed hair symbolizes freedom to live without limitations - a timely sentiment. In life's endeavors, my hair reflects encouragement for personal liberty to exist unapologetically.
Elijah, my stellar student athlete cousin, once gifted me a bracelet. Isolated by friends after choosing business school over the NFL, he attempted suicide. No one should face negativity for choosing the best decision for them. We now speak daily in a manner that invites vulnerable, safe honesty. The gifted bracelet I wear reminds me my voice matters in making life decisions.
I value uplifting others; such a belief grounds my identity. As Vice President of my school's A2MEND chapter, I exercise this value. I cherish creating opportunities for other students to volunteer for our community. Events like food drives and scheduled discourses benefit student and citizen wellness. I feel authentically rejuvenated when my efforts bolster these services.
I wish to continue this mindful theme through my studies. If awarded this scholarship, I will apply it to my school's tuition costs. I study to write for television, a universally unifying medium. I aim to use empathy through story to tell narratives like those of the people that influence me. I hope my stories spark happiness across households globally.
