I want to catch the attention of my audience from the start. I take lots of inspiration from art that personally intrigues me. The simplicity and unique details of traditional Japanese art inspire me deeply. No one art artist intrigues me, rather a collection or genre of works. The repetitive design creates an eye-catching piece that finds itself in my art. The stories that inspire the art are interpreted differently by artists. This is what I wish to achieve. I am passionate about making a lasting impression on people. Beautiful designs inspired by stories are something I use as guidance. Specifically, Japanese Folklore and its obscurity leaves a lasting impact on my design. The uncanny themes and surrealist design are something I strive to implement into my art. One artist who uses those themes very effectively is Utagawa Kuniyoshi. A recurring feature of his work is juxtaposition or contrast between the subjects. One piece, "The Sailor Tokuso and the Sea Monster" uses detailed contrast to inflict fear or anxiety in the audience. Kuniyashi illustrated an angry ocean, enveloping a Sailor and his ship. Behind the boat, a prominent black humanoid figure lurks from the water over the ship. While the art is centered in a specific space, parts of the design overtake the borders. This simple detail is something that appears in my art. In a way, this piece creates a distinct emotion in the audience. These pieces continue to envelop how I create and think about art. Creative flow is something that pushes me forward when designing. Without any real plan, ideas shape their way into my art as I continue. Creating strict outlines inhibits my creative process and puts my ideas in a box. I use art and creativity to express myself, as a therapy. Growing up as a transgender man, I had a very difficult time expressing myself accurately. I became complacent in many ways. Art creates a way for me to advocate for myself. Art is universal, transformative, and constantly evolving. My art is always changing, making new pieces as I change. However, I often find myself fearing for my future. I don't see myself as good enough to become the designer I want to be. If I cannot reach my audience, then I will never succeed. As the world evolves, much of what I want to create is recreated by artificial intelligence. I don't want to be replaced like many have been before me. Even if I cannot achieve my dreams of fashion and design, I want my art to at least change someone for the better. Growing up, I felt like I was constantly in the shadows of greatness. I was mediocre when compared to others and that is something that I continue to fear. But I cannot let these fears inhibit my ability to create. I will use these fears, emotions, and ideas to push me forward creatively. I love my art, but I am learning to love myself again. I only hope that what I make can do that for others.
