Throughout my high school experience, I have seen how much of an impact educators have on students. They inspire the youth by the way they teach. I genuinely believe the trajectory of each student's future lies in the hands of the educator they are given. In my personal experience, having an African American educator in my school has made my experience in school way more of a relief. Having someone that you can relate to and confide in has changed my high school experience tremendously.
My first time having an African American male educator did not come until my sophomore year of high school. I vividly remember the relief I got after receiving my first African American teacher. In terms of african american males my biology teacher represented just 2 out of more than 50 high school educators at my school. Seeing someone of the same race in a position of authority and respect not only empowered me but also inspired me to want the same. I felt a strong sense of guidance and mentorship from my teacher, helping me break every objective I faced whether it be school or life related. I know that having an African American mentor who was very educated made me want to attain the level in life where you start to make an impact on others.
I came to terms with my calling during my junior year. I know the subject that interests me most was finance; however, I noticed that not many African american people are in the environment of finance. To be able to teach finance at a very high level institute is a very important goal of mine. Looking at the demographics of the financial industry retrieved from https://www.zippia.com/finance-professional-jobs/demographics/, African Americans represent less than 10% of the jobs in finance while White people represent more than 70% of the jobs in finance. I liked that I got to recognize that not many people of my color are in that specific industry which is why I want to be a mentor to others studying this field. When teaching, I can give African American students the courage of knowing that there is someone like themselves in that specific industry.
In order to make my mark on the world, I want to empower the hundreds of students that feel discouraged when it comes to working in a field that their ethnicity is minimal in. A society full of empowered african american individuals would change this world in great ways. It would begin to boost the confidence of future african Americans and show them the possibilities in store.
