As someone who has been chronically ill for most of their childhood/early adult life, I feel called to help those who also fight for stability related to their health as I pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. As a means of thanking the many doctors/nurses/medical staff for consistently and selflessly restoring my health, I feel called to pay it forward. To provide some backstory on a few of my immediate family members, my mother is a recent triple-negative breast cancer survivor, my brother is a traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivor, and I, myself, being diagnosed with ADHD, Inattentive type at age 10, and having survived sepsis twice. I have personally experienced the lowest of lows regarding illnesses in my family.
My empathetic approach has demonstrated the ability to systematically form a connection with patients who feel that people might not understand what they're going through. I know, however, that I cannot do this alone. As a future nurse, I would more than appreciate any financial assistance to help me achieve my goal of being of service and giving back to others what medical workers have afforded members of my family and me. I work PRN at a long-term care facility as Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) while attending school to help make ends meet. Albeit a passion of mine to help others with their medical challenges, financial assistance would benefit considerably in helping offset costs such as tuition and fees.

As someone who has been chronically ill for most of their childhood/early adult life, I feel called to help those who also fight for stability related to their health as I pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. I have personally experienced the lowest of lows regarding illnesses in my family.
As a child, I remember my family loading up the car for weekly day trips out of town to visit and help care for my grandfather in his home, where he taught citizenship courses leading up to the day he left this earth. He was a person with paraplegia who was missing his left limb due to a childhood accident. Still, you'd never know it by listening to his consistently upbeat demeanor and genuine love for sports. Little did I know I had begun my career in healthcare as a little boy who had the pleasure of learning from his hero.
My empathetic approach has demonstrated the ability to systematically form a connection with patients who feel that people might not understand what they're going through. I know, however, that I cannot do this alone. I currently work PRN at a long-term care facility as Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) while attending school to help make ends meet. As a future nurse, I would more than appreciate any financial assistance to help me achieve my goal of being of service and giving back to others what medical workers have afforded members of my family and me.
Knowledge is power, and I will do my best to bestow my understanding and experiences with those around me. Although hurdles have been placed before me throughout the years, my story is not yet over. I greatly appreciate your time and consideration, and I hope that (whether chosen or not) I embody those characteristics of your beloved Kelly O., acting unselfishly while simultaneously demonstrating compassion and empathy in all she did. What an honor it must've been to know her.
As someone who has lived many years with a learning disability, I genuinely believe in the importance of visibility and hope that I am an example of what is possible when you remain dedicated and grateful. I believe in manifesting and speaking your dreams into existence: this is me putting the word into the universe that I will someday work in an oncology setting or within a critical care unit. Again, I greatly appreciate your time and consideration as I strive toward achieving my ultimate dream of becoming a Registered Nurse (BSN, RN). "As a nurse, I will help illuminate the darkness for those I help. My career and my life will have meaning and sacredness."

I recall my third-grade teacher being adamant about placing me in a "mentally retarded" class due to my inability to sit still and retain information. I thought getting out of class was fun at that age, but little did I realize it was my teacher’s attempt at not dealing with me, a child struggling to understand the world around them. At the age of eight, I remember thinking about what life would be like if I ran out in front of a car so that I would no longer be a burden to my teacher. I have fought chronic illnesses most of my childhood/early adult life, and I feel called to help those who also fight for stability related to their health as I pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
As a means of thanking the many doctors/nurses/medical staff for consistently and selflessly restoring my health, I feel called to pay it forward. My mother is a recent triple-negative breast cancer survivor, my brother is a traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivor, and I, myself, was diagnosed with depression, ADHD, Inattentive type at age ten and have survived sepsis twice. I have personally experienced the lowest of lows regarding illnesses in my family. Despite the lows, I'm grateful to have found mental health counseling at age 24, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which has been instrumental in helping me manage my everyday emotions (some of which I feel intensely).
By embracing what I was once told are "setbacks," I genuinely believe in visibility and hope that I exemplify what is possible when you believe in yourself and work with mental health professionals who help you see life beyond your struggles. Graduating from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing will be a culmination of personal sacrifice, commitment, and perseverance. I hope to someday work as a Registered Nurse in an acute care setting while giving back through volunteerism.
Empathy is my superpower. My empathetic approach has demonstrated the ability to systematically form a connection with patients who feel that people might not understand what they're going through. As a future nurse, I will be of service and give back to others what medical and mental health professionals have afforded me time and time again. I am living proof that my mental health struggles do not define me.
I have played sports for most of my life, and I especially love sand volleyball, racquetball, and hiking to cope with stress. Knowledge is power, and I will do my best to impart my understanding and experiences to those around me. Despite those hurdles, which have been placed before me throughout the years, I know my story is not yet over. I greatly appreciate your time and consideration, and I hope that (whether chosen or not) I embody, as a differently abled person, the ability to achieve your goals and educational aspirations when you have the right mindset.

Albeit a passion of mine to help others with their medical challenges, financial assistance would benefit considerably in helping offset costs such as tuition and fees. My background consists of mostly having worked in the legal sector as a legal assistant. From personal injury to eminent domain and environmental to intellectual property law, it wasn't until recently that I realized how much I loved reading the fine print, especially the benefits handbook (yeah, I'm "that guy"). My tenure working under industry-leading attorneys allowed me to refine my time management while remaining mindful of confidentiality.
Although baptism by fire was a frequent, sometimes inevitable occurrence amongst the support staff, being resourceful was not. I continuously count my blessings for my unwavering support system, which never ceases to help shine a light on my tenacity and the ability to remain personally adaptable to many situations as I fully embrace this next chapter of pursuing my true passion with confidence. I could not be more thrilled about my recent acceptance into the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center (Odessa, TX, location) Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. As someone who has lived many years with a learning disability, I genuinely believe in the importance of visibility and hope that I am an example of what is possible when you remain dedicated and grateful.
Despite those hurdles, which have been placed before me throughout the years, I know my story is not yet over. I hope to make Harvey and Geneva Mabry proud by returning to school once more as a thirty-four-year-old determined to turn their passion into a reality. Thank you for your time and consideration. Embracing what I was once told are "setbacks," I genuinely believe in visibility and hope that I exemplify what is possible when you're persistent while remaining dedicated and humble. Graduating from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing will be a culmination of personal sacrifice, commitment, and perseverance.
I foresee myself working in an acute care setting and giving back to my community through volunteerism. Promoting good health habits within the LGBTQ+ community (via social media and local partnerships) will undoubtedly boost morality as people learn and grow with other healthy individuals. Knowledge is power, and I will do my best to impart my understanding and experiences to those around me. After all, Grandma has always said, "If you have good health, you have everything."
Despite those hurdles, which have been placed before me throughout the years, I know I am still on this earth for a good reason, and my story is not yet over. I greatly appreciate your time, consideration, and any assistance you are willing to provide as I strive toward achieving my ultimate dream of becoming a Registered Nurse. "As a nurse, I will help illuminate the darkness for those I help. My career and my life will have meaning and sacredness.”

To provide some backstory on a few of my immediate family members, my mother is a recent triple-negative breast cancer survivor, my brother is a traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivor, and I, myself, being diagnosed with depression, ADHD, Inattentive type at age 10, and having survived sepsis twice.

I am still working on paying off approximately $20,000.00 in student loan debt from my first degree (Bachelor of Business Administration) in marketing from West Texas A&M University.
While I understand I will forever be indebted should I receive this amount, I desire to pay it forward in community service hours. I foresee myself working in an acute care setting and giving back to my community through volunteerism. As a Registered Nurse, I will partner with local non-profits to assist the underserved population. I was that kid who attended free community vaccination events, and my opportunity to pay it forward is just around the corner.

My mother is now cancer-free, and thriving, thanks to the healthcare professionals who helped care for her throughout that time of uncertainty. I was raised to do the right thing, always in all ways. Allowing my conscience and moral tenacity to guide my endeavors has never wronged me. As such, I intend to hold in high esteem the trust that has been placed in me, which I plan to demonstrate as a future nurse.
In closing, I understand that my journey as a student will extend far beyond that of the Health Sciences Center. As someone who has been chronically ill for most of their childhood/early adult life, I must thank many doctors/nurses/medical staff for constantly restoring my health. I am being called to pursue my passion of becoming a Registered Nurse. To provide some backstory on a few of my immediate family members, my mother is a triple-negative breast cancer survivor, my brother is a traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivor, and I, myself, being diagnosed with ADHD, Inattentive type, having survived sepsis twice. I understand, however, that I cannot do this alone. I am most grateful for the many medical professionals who have selflessly given of themselves to ensure my and my family's health, granting me a meaningful opportunity to pay it forward. As a future nurse, I would more than appreciate any financial assistance to help me achieve my goal of being of service to others. I work part-time as a CNA at a long-term care facility while attending school to help make ends meet. Although I realize it is a passion of mine to help others in a medical setting, I fully recognize that financial assistance would allow me to focus more on my studies, which will help offset the financial hardships I am currently faced with.
As a minority with a cognitive disability, I remember the classroom setting where I felt ashamed due to not learning as quickly as some of my peers. I have my mom to thank for advocating to see a specialist who helped me regain focus via prescription medication, which essentially "leveled the playing field." I genuinely believe in the importance of visibility and hope that I am setting an example for others who might feel as though they are alone on their journey. I hope my openness will demonstrate to other cognitively impaired minorities that anything is possible when you remain dedicated while advocating for yourself.
I am most humbled by this opportunity to share my story. I greatly appreciate your time, consideration, and any assistance you are willing to provide as I strive toward achieving my ultimate dream of becoming a Registered Nurse.

As someone who has been chronically ill for most of their childhood/early adult life (sepsis survivor x2), I have decided to pursue my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I have to thank many doctors/nurses/medical staff for constantly restoring my health, and I feel I am being called to pursue my passion of becoming a Registered Nurse. Growing up, I remember driving with my family to my grandpa's house (Pecos, TX) frequently to assist with daily living activities as he was a person with paraplegia missing his left limb. He taught citizenship classes until his last few days and is my hero/inspiration.
I am most grateful for my CPR training as I recently utilized my skillset (as a CNA) to assist a long-term care facility resident who experienced sudden cardiac arrest. Thanks to my training, my colleagues and I significantly saved the life of a well-known and beloved resident. To provide some backstory on a few of my immediate family members, my mother is a triple-negative breast cancer survivor, my brother is a traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivor, and I, myself, being diagnosed with ADHD Inattentive type, having survived sepsis twice. I have personally experienced the lowest of lows regarding illnesses in my family. I understand, however, that I cannot do this alone. As a future nurse, I would more than appreciate any financial assistance to help me achieve my goal of being of service and giving back to others what medical workers have already given me. I work part-time at a long-term care facility as a certified nurse aide (CNA) while attending school to help make ends meet. Although I realize it is a passion of mine to help others in a medical setting, I fully recognize that financial assistance would allow me to focus more on my studies, which will help offset the financial hardships I am currently faced with.
As a member of the Latino/ADHD communities, I truly believe in the importance of visibility and hope that I am setting an example of what is possible when you remain dedicated and grateful. I am most humbled by this opportunity to share my story. I greatly appreciate your time, consideration, and any assistance you are willing to provide as I strive toward achieving my ultimate dream of becoming a Registered Nurse.
