All teachers can make a long-lasting impact but very few choose to. In twelve years of school, I’ve only had a small handful of teachers who were able to make a small dent in my life. Yes, they did teach me what I needed to learn and yes, they did give me the resources to grow but none truly had an impact on me. That is, until Mrs. Baker.
Due to COVID-19, I had to spend my freshman year of high school online. I was afraid that without the typical school environment, I would fall behind and lose my drive for learning. In hopes to not lose that drive, I decided to take Web Design. It wasn’t a class I gave much thought to, just a filler class that will help me get my practical arts credit. As I looked over the modules and saw what I was getting myself into, I suddenly felt overwhelmed. I didn’t know the first thing about coding. I barely knew anything about fonts and word placements. I was going into this class essentially blind and for the first time in my life, I was genuinely afraid of school. This is where Mrs. Baker comes into play.
I began slow and started doing the assignments one by one. As I hit submit and turned in my work, within a few hours I would have a message from Mrs. Baker. She would always give reassuring messages if I did something wrong or compliment my work when I did well. Suddenly, I felt the need to always be pushing myself and making my work better than my last. I had that urge to learn and want to improve. Mrs. Baker encouraged me and wouldn’t neglect my ideas if they weren’t part of the curriculum. She would help and teach me things that I wouldn’t have learned in the class. In a matter of weeks, I could code radio buttons, headings, unordered lists, and so much more. Before I knew it, I was coding and designing whole functioning web pages.
As part of our final for the class, we were asked to make a website using Adobe Dreamweaver. We had never used this software in the class so the thought of learning another new skill was enticing. I had finished a final that Mrs. Baker estimated would take roughly two weeks in two days. I turned in my work and the response from Mrs. Baker changed my life. She said, “This is phenomenal work! Making a website of THIS level in such a short time is nothing short of EXTRAORDINARY! You have a gift and the work you have created this semester is incredible. I’m so happy to see how passionate you have gotten about coding and web design. Thank you for letting me be a part of this journey with you. You will move mountains, sweet girl!” I received a 120/100 on the final, the highest score anyone got in the class. My final is now used as an example for future classes.
I had never felt so proud of myself and my work, and I can’t thank Mrs. Baker enough for having this impact on me. She believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. Mrs. Baker gave me the push I needed to excel. Now I know what I want to do with my future. I want to major in Computer Science and enter the world of tech. I want to innovate and inspire other girls to be a part of this world. With Mrs. Baker’s help, I found my passion.
