Hi! My whole life I have dreamed of being a teacher after watching my mom fall in love with teaching. So far it has been so rewarding and I can’t wait to change the lives of my future students.

When reflecting on my education, I realized that because of my teachers I fell in love with reading. During this time, my dad was diagnosed with cancer so reading was my escape and it was all thanks to my wonderful teachers who played an important role in my reading instruction.
When I have a classroom in the future, I feel that there isn’t just one way that I will incorporate reading instruction into my classroom. There are so many different types of learners, so first my main goal would be to distinguish the level of reading each student is at so I can better instruct them. I would do this my seeing how many words students can read a minute. This would help me gauge how I can help the students moving forward.
Secondly, I will have a bookshelf full of books that are open for the students to borrow. Having a choice in what you read is something that I have always wished to have when growing up. This choice will hopefully give the students an appreciation for reading by reading something they are interested in.
Another thing I plan to do when incorporating reading instruction into my classroom is to do read alouds with the students. When I do this, I will ask them multiple recall questions that will help them grow their understanding of how to properly read and understand a book. Working as a group will allow my students to bounce off of each other and also grow comfort in saying their answers. Reading takes a lot of practice to understand fully so by doing this I will actively grow their knowledge.
Lastly, when students have a lot of free time reading will be the main focus. They will be able to do online reading games, interactive reading games, and free reading. Having a choice will grow their appreciation for reading, as well as grow their reading skills. This is because the more access they have to reading the better they will get.
These are just a few of the ways that I would like to incorporate reading instruction into my classroom. I feel it is better for the students to have a hands on approach rather than just being read to. It is so important to gauge the level the students are at so they can properly build on their reading knowledge. Especially after the effects that Covid-19 has had on the students education. I hope these strategies for the future will not only help my students to comprehend what they are reading, but also to grow a love for it as I did because of my teachers.
