Bio

My name is Reagan Kempson. I am a high school scholar who attends Westlake High School. At this moment I am a senior who is very eager to graduate high school. I am a magnet scholar at Westlake High School, focusing on math and science. For over 12 years, I've been a Girl Scout at the Hoosier Memorial United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Being in Girl Scouts allowed me to place myself in a community where I felt I was welcome. Growing up I would feel as if I wasn’t like everyone else or looked like everyone else, always feeling like I stood out. Girl Scouts then brought me out of my shell and allowed me to be in a space where I can grow as an African American girl in society. Now I am a public speaker and advocate for my school. As a young child, I always dreamed of being a doctor, thus inspiring my immense love for science and math, and will be starting my freshman year of college as a pre-med major. After college, my dream career is to be an athletic trainer.

Growing up in a small family I had a close relationship with my grandma. My grandma and I have been best friends since I was a little kid. One Christmas night my grandma and I were opening my gifts. This one specific Christmas I got dolls, crafting supplies, and play dough, and every child’s first instinct after opening their gifts is to play with them. I began playing with my ice cream play dough kit which at the time was one of the best gifts. As I’m making the ice cream sandwich I call my grandma into the room to try my ice cream sandwich. In my mind, she was just entertaining me by asking me what was in it and how I made it, but little did I know she didn’t know that it was play dough. After she asked her initial questions I said “try it”, and she put the whole piece of play dough in her mouth. Everyone was laughing and telling her that it wasn’t real and she screamed and said “I will never eat anything else you give me”. That night she wouldn’t play with me anymore.
