    Heal Our World Software Scholarship
Throughout my life, I have witnessed firsthand the power of technology and its potential to address societal challenges and drive positive change. As a computer science student, I believe I am applying what I've learned in a practical sense. I have been working on a project, LearnFlow, an AI-powered learning-accelerator. Too many people are misusing AI and using these technologies to cheat. I fully believe in using AI as a TOOL and not a crutch. This is an ongoing project that I am incredibly passionate about, in fact, sometimes my schoolwork suffers slightly because I want to devote so much time to this. To put it briefly, the tool automates some lower-level study-flow processes such as note set generation, flashcard generation, knowledge gap identification, and question set generation. I have experienced the struggles and obstacles that many students face when pursuing their education. It was through my own struggles that I recognized the need for tools that could help students overcome barriers and level the playing field. This realization led to the creation of LearnFlow. So far, LearnFlow has helped over 1,000 students increase the efficiency of their studying, reducing their study time by approximately 20% while maintaining or improving their grades. The positive impact that this tool has had on the lives of students fills me with immense joy and reinforces my belief in the power of technology. Currently, it is available through OpenAI's frontend, meaning it is locked behind a $20 paywall. I am committed to making LearnFlow freely available to all students, as I believe that access to education and learning tools should not be limited by financial constraints. To do this, I am using an open-source model (Llama 3) and fine-tuning it to do the various tasks Learnflow does. Then, I will host this model on my own website without a paywall. By leveraging AI and innovative software, I aim to create a more equitable and inclusive educational landscape, where every student has the opportunity to succeed and reach their full potential. The Heal Our World using Software Scholarship resonates deeply with my personal mission and the values that drive my work on LearnFlow. Like Shakil Dost, who inspired this scholarship, I have a passion for repairing things and using my skills to make a positive difference in the world. I believe that by developing innovative software solutions, we can address societal challenges, promote inclusivity, and contribute to the overall growth and resilience of communities. As a recipient of the Heal Our World using Software Scholarship, I would be able to continue my work on LearnFlow and pursue new projects that align with my passion for using technology to drive positive change. The financial support would allow me to dedicate more time and resources to the development of these initiatives, while also connecting me with a community of like-minded individuals who share my vision for a better world through software. In the face of adversity, I have learned that perseverance, innovation, and a commitment to making a difference can open doors to incredible opportunities. With the support of this scholarship, I am confident that I can continue to harness the power of software to heal our world, one student at a time, and contribute to the creation of a more equitable and inclusive future for all. The project is ongoing but will be accessible via: learnflowgpt.com!

As one of only two Hispanic kids in my grade, my identity was often a subject of stereotypes and prejudices, underscoring the reality that circumstances of birth can sometimes unjustly dictate the respect one is accorded. This made me acutely aware of the inherent dignity of all lives and inspired me to advocate for those who are often voiceless—especially the unborn. The crux of my pro-life stance is not solely grounded in a political or philosophical viewpoint but is rooted deeply in the nuances of my personal life. My mother, a tireless force of nature, worked three jobs to support me and my three siblings. Observing her unwavering dedication, despite the hurdles, reinforced the value of every life and underscored the potential every individual possesses to surmount challenges and contribute positively to the world. Additionally, my experiences with a chronic medical condition from childhood until my late teens have significantly shaped my perspective on life and its sanctity. Though the condition was inherited, it ceased to afflict me after puberty. This transition, a testament to the profound mysteries and potential of human life, further cemented my belief in protecting and cherishing life from conception to natural death. Going forward, I plan to use my platform as a computer scientist to advocate for the pro-life position and to promote the value and dignity of all human lives, especially the unborn. I envision developing software and platforms that can educate individuals about the scientific, moral, and philosophical underpinnings of the pro-life stance. More than merely being a programmer, I aspire to be an ambassador for life, leveraging technology to bridge gaps in understanding and foster respectful dialogues. Moreover, I am committed to volunteering and participating in activities that uphold the dignity of life. This could include supporting organizations that provide resources for expectant mothers, assisting in events that promote adoption, or initiating coding programs that cater to the underprivileged and differently-abled, demonstrating that every life, regardless of its circumstances, possesses inherent worth and potential. By valuing life from conception to natural death, I'm not only paying homage to the struggles of my past but also sowing seeds for a compassionate future—a future where every life is cherished, every voice is heard, and every individual, born or unborn, is treated with the dignity they inherently deserve. Through the Pro-Life Advocates Scholarship, I hope to move one step closer to this dream, continuing my advocacy, and bringing the dignity of all lives, especially the unborn, to the forefront of societal consciousness.

Besides facing the challenges of racial underrepresentation, my life was punctuated by economic struggles, which set me apart from my peers. My mother worked tirelessly at three jobs to provide for me and my siblings, a sight that painted vivid pictures of both struggle and perseverance in my young mind. This economic disparity and the glaring absence of my father necessitated my mother to transition into the role of both a guardian and parent. Her tireless effort to provide for us transformed my perspective of life and my role within it. I quickly learned the value of resilience, the importance of hard work, and the impact of education on our lives. This instilled in me an insatiable drive to change our circumstances, and the aspiration to give back to my family in the most profound way I could - through education. As I reflect upon my past and project into my future, I realize the imprint left by this unique upbringing on my goals. And it's with this hope that I look forward to a future where my dreams are realized and the cycle of hardship is broken, one line of code at a time.
    CEW IV Foundation Scholarship Program
As I navigate the road of higher education, my journey is defined not only by the pursuit of knowledge but also by the nuances of my cultural identity. I am Raul, a proud Hispanic individual, aspiring computer scientist, and the first in my family to attend college. I carry the hopes and dreams of my family on my shoulders, underpinned by a childhood characterized by both hardship and resilience. Growing up, I was a fish out of water, one of only two Mexican kids in a predominantly white, affluent community. The stark contrast of my socioeconomic background and ethnicity, coupled with my limited English, marked me as an outlier. These circumstances brought about a unique set of challenges that often felt insurmountable. However, I believe it is the amalgamation of these experiences that fueled my ambition and led me to where I stand today, on the precipice of earning a degree in Computer Science. The narrative of my journey mirrors that of countless BIPOC students navigating the higher education system, wherein our identities often place us at a disadvantage. The hurdles of racial and economic disparity hinder access to quality education, leading to a gap in degree attainment and underrepresentation in various advanced fields. In response to the prompt, I assert without hesitation that society needs to amend its approach to addressing the challenges faced by the disadvantaged. Not as an act of charity, but as a fundamental duty to foster equity and ensure everyone has an equal chance at success. Society often regards the challenges of disadvantaged individuals as personal deficiencies instead of acknowledging them as systemic failures. It’s easier to blame individuals for their circumstances rather than admit that our systems have been designed in a way that disadvantages certain groups of people. We need to address these systemic issues by providing more equitable opportunities in education, housing, and employment, and by challenging discriminatory attitudes and biases that further perpetuate these disparities. This shift would not only level the playing field but also enrich our communities and workplaces with diverse perspectives and ideas. In terms of education, we need to dismantle barriers that limit access to quality education for disadvantaged students. This could take the form of increased funding for public schools, more scholarships for BIPOC students, or mentorship programs that provide guidance and support. An investment in education is an investment in our future, and every student, regardless of their socioeconomic background or ethnicity, deserves access to quality education. By creating more opportunities for disadvantaged students, we can help close the attainment gap and encourage a more diverse representation in advanced fields. To echo the sentiment of the CEW IV Foundation, supporting underrepresented students in their pursuit of higher education is a crucial step towards creating a more equal society. Scholarships like these, not only provide financial aid but are a testament to the fact that ambition, coupled with opportunity, can transcend barriers and pave the way for success. In conclusion, the reimagining of societal attitudes and responses towards disadvantaged individuals is not just a necessity, but an imperative for a more equitable society. A society that acknowledges and addresses systemic issues, celebrates diversity, and champions equality. As an aspiring computer scientist and proud Hispanic individual, I am committed to utilizing my education to contribute to this vision, one line of code at a time.
