Bio

2020 brought me a perspective shifting brain tumor. What started as a misdiagnosed migraine syndrome, turned into a fight for answers. Despite. Knowing something wasn’t right, I went home researched brain anatomy and self-taught how to read MRI images. The next week I went back to the same neurologist and pointed to a mass sitting on my C1 nerve at the base of my brain. After confirming that there was in fact a mass in these images, the long journey to remove the benign tumor began. The surgery put me in a position to face my mortality and reflect on my life. What resulted was a clear focus. I am most proud of my ability to embrace adversity and come out better. Although I have had a long-held fascination with the brain and its mechanisms, it was the confidence that I came out of this experience with that brought about my decision to enroll at Penn State to finish my undergraduate degree with my sight set on a PhD in clinical psychology. These qualities of curiosity, figuring it out, and the confidence to commit carried me through my undergraduate program.

    Chronic Boss Scholarship
Living with an autoimmune disease like rheumatoid arthritis has undoubtedly shaped my life in profound ways, and while it presented its challenges, it has also allowed me to discover strengths and purposes I might not have otherwise realized. Being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at a young age was a life-altering experience. It was as if my body had betrayed me, and the realization that my functionality was limited by a condition I had no control over took a toll on my mental health. Due to my condition I had to endure an extensive neurosurgery where my C1 nerve was removed. The risk associated with the surgery left me in bad shape mentally. I had never experienced anxiety until my imperative surgery. One of the most significant challenges I faced was the emotional toll of chronic pain and physical limitations. Rheumatoid arthritis not only affected my mobility but also caused persistent discomfort. This constant battle with pain and fatigue led to a deep sense of frustration and, at times, depression. I found myself grappling with feelings of helplessness and a fear that I might never lead a fulfilling life. However, as time passed and I embarked on my journey to manage my condition, I began to transform my struggle into strength. It was during this challenging period that I discovered my passion for the brain, specifically how the brain affects mental health. I learned to read MRIs after my bout with neurosurgery. Through that I garnered a confidence. I never fully believed in my learning capabilities. It was through that confidence and learning that I realized that I wanted to not only understand my own emotional struggles but also help others navigate their own. My own experience with depression and the mental health challenges that accompanied my autoimmune disease became the driving force behind my pursuit of a clinical psychology degree. In many ways, my autoimmune disease served as a catalyst for my personal and academic growth. It taught me resilience, empathy, and the importance of mental health in overall well-being. It allowed me to connect with others who faced similar challenges, creating a sense of community and shared understanding. Through my journey, I have learned that adversity can be a powerful teacher, pushing us to uncover our strengths, pursue our passions, and find purpose in helping others who may be going through their own struggles. Today, I see my autoimmune disease not as a limitation but as an integral part of my identity—a source of strength that has shaped my path towards becoming a clinical psychologist. I am committed to using my experiences to connect with and support individuals facing their own battles with chronic illness and mental health issues. By turning my struggle into my purpose, I hope to empower others to find resilience and strength within themselves, just as I have done on my journey with rheumatoid arthritis.
    Online Learning Innovator Scholarship
As a student, I leverage several online platforms, tools, and resources to enhance my understanding of the subjects I'm studying, and each plays a unique role in my learning journey. Here are some of the key platforms I use and how they contribute to my academic growth: Moodle and Canvas: Both Moodle and Canvas are Learning Management Systems (LMS) that my educational institution utilizes. These platforms have been invaluable in helping me organize my classes, access course materials, and submit assignments. They provide a centralized hub where I can find course syllabi, lecture notes, and readings, making it easier to stay on top of my coursework. Additionally, they often feature discussion boards and collaborative tools that facilitate communication with professors and peers, fostering a sense of community within my courses. Zoom: Zoom has become an integral part of my academic experience, especially in the context of remote learning. It allows me to attend virtual lectures, participate in group discussions, and engage in real-time interactions with professors and fellow students. One of the most significant benefits of Zoom is its ability to foster mentorship relationships. Through one-on-one video meetings with professors and mentors, I can seek guidance, discuss research projects, and receive personalized feedback. This direct interaction has enriched my learning experience and provided valuable insights beyond what can be achieved in a traditional classroom setting. Grammarly: Grammarly is an indispensable writing assistant that I use to improve the quality of my written assignments and research papers. It not only helps with grammar and spelling but also offers suggestions for clarity, conciseness, and style. By integrating Grammarly into my writing process, I've learned to identify and correct common writing mistakes, which has enhanced the overall quality of my work. This tool has not only improved my writing skills but has also helped me convey my ideas more effectively, leading to better academic performance. In addition to these platforms and tools, I have also had the opportunity to engage in experiential learning as part of my academic journey. One notable experience is my upcoming presentation at the Society for Neuroscience conference. This presentation stems from my participation in remote undergraduate research, which I believe is a valuable form of experiential learning. Through this hands-on research experience, I've gained practical insights and applied my knowledge in real-world settings. Presenting a poster at the Society for Neuroscience conference allows me to share my experiential learning journey with a broader audience. It not only showcases my dedication to advancing my understanding of neuroscience but also highlights the adaptability and resilience required for remote undergraduate students. This opportunity is a testament to the power of experiential learning and its ability to bridge the gap between theory and practice. In summary, online platforms like Moodle, Canvas, Zoom, and Grammarly have been instrumental in supporting my academic pursuits by providing organization, communication, and writing assistance. Furthermore, my involvement in experiential learning opportunities, such as presenting at conferences, has allowed me to apply my knowledge in meaningful ways and share my experiences with the academic community. These resources and experiences have collectively enriched my learning journey and prepared me for future academic and professional endeavors.
    Mental Health Empowerment Scholarship
Mental health holds immense importance to me as a student for various reasons. Firstly, it is integral to my overall well-being and academic success. A sound mental state enhances my ability to focus, concentrate, and effectively manage stress, ultimately enabling me to perform better in my studies. Moreover, as a student, I am well aware of the prevalence of mental health challenges among my peers. I understand the profound impact these issues can have on individuals' lives, including their academic pursuits. This knowledge fuels my commitment to advocating for mental health in my community. In my role as a student, I advocate for mental health through several avenues. One of the most significant ways is by promoting open dialogue and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health. I actively engage in conversations with my peers, friends, and family about the importance of seeking help when needed and the value of mental health support. By sharing my own experiences and encouraging others to share theirs, I aim to create a supportive environment where individuals feel comfortable discussing their mental health concerns. Additionally, I participate in mental health awareness campaigns and events within my school community. Whether it's attending workshops, seminars, or joining student organizations focused on mental health advocacy, I strive to contribute to the ongoing conversation about mental well-being. These activities help raise awareness and provide resources for those in need, fostering a more inclusive and compassionate atmosphere within my academic environment. I also partner with a non-profit, Love is Louder, to amplify voices of kindness and destigmatize mental health struggles through media Looking ahead to my future as a clinical psychologist, my commitment to mental health advocacy remains unwavering. I envision my role as not only providing therapeutic support to individuals but also conducting research that contributes to our understanding of mental health and quality-of-life measures. Quality of life measures are essential in evaluating the effectiveness of mental health interventions and treatment outcomes. My research goals include developing and refining these measures to ensure they accurately capture the holistic well-being of individuals. I am particularly interested in researching the intersection of mental health, quality of life, and cultural diversity. I believe that cultural factors play a significant role in shaping one's perception of mental health and well-being. By conducting culturally sensitive research, I hope to bridge gaps in mental health care and ensure that interventions are tailored to meet the unique needs of diverse populations. This research will contribute to the broader field of psychology by advancing our knowledge of how mental health and quality of life are experienced and influenced by various cultural contexts. In conclusion, mental health is not only essential for my personal well-being as a student but also a passion and commitment that I intend to carry into my future career as a clinical psychologist. Advocating for mental health within my community, conducting research on quality of life measures, and addressing the impact of cultural diversity on mental health are integral aspects of my journey toward promoting mental well-being and helping individuals lead fulfilling lives.
    Disney Super Fan Scholarship
There's a particular brand of magic that only Disney can conjure up. For many, including me, Disney has been a cornerstone of our childhood, an ideal woven with dreams, hopes, and boundless imagination. If I were to choose one thing I adore most about Disney, it would be its timeless ability to evoke magic. During my younger years, my love for Disney was all about remembering the magic. Each Disney movie, each character, and each song encapsulated a world brimming with possibilities. The vibrant colors of Ariel's underwater kingdom, the vast savannah in 'The Lion King,' or the icy beauty of Elsa's palace – they all painted vibrant landscapes of dreams and adventures. As I eagerly awaited each new film, or joyfully sang along to timeless classics, it felt as though I was part of something larger, a grand expression of stories that resonated deep within. But as with all things, perspectives shift with time. Today, the magic of Disney has transformed for me. It’s no longer just about remembering the magic, it’s about knowing the magic as I watch it unfold through the wide-eyed wonder of my children. There’s an indescribable joy in witnessing them experience the same tales that once captivated my heart. Their laughter, their amazement, and their innocent musings transport me back, bridging the generational gap and making those moments all the more precious. Seeing my children lost in the enchantment of a Disney story, or watching them role-play their favorite characters, is like reliving my childhood, but with an added layer of profundity. It's an exquisite reminder that while times change, the essence of Disney's magic remains timeless. Every gasp of surprise, every twinkle in their eyes, and every animated retelling of a Disney tale reinforces the universality of its appeal. Furthermore, Disney has now become a medium of connection. Through it, I find common ground with my kids, sharing stories of how I reacted to the same tales when I was their age, or revealing hidden Easter eggs within movies. This bond, forged by shared experiences, lends depth to our relationship, allowing us to connect on a level that transcends age. In essence, Disney's magic has evolved for me. From a child lost in its spellbinding tales, I've transitioned to an adult, a spectator of sorts, who revels in watching the next generation embark on their own Disney adventures. This cyclical nature of wonder, where past memories and present experiences merge, is what makes Disney truly special. It’s a testament to its enduring charm, proving that no matter our age, Disney has a way of touching our hearts and kindling the flames of imagination. As I watch my children, I'm filled with anticipation for the day they might watch their kids, my grandchildren, experience the same Disney magic, much like Simba knows, completing the circle of life. Now, as an adult I know, that magic is real.

Returning to school is a transformative journey that brings opportunities for personal and professional growth. However, this endeavor is not without its challenges. In my own experience, I have faced and overcome numerous obstacles while pursuing my education. This essay explores the challenges I encountered as a mother, the loss of my father, the journey of being pregnant, and financial constraints. It also highlights the strategies and resilience that enabled me to overcome these hurdles and continue my educational pursuits. Balancing Motherhood and Education: One of the significant challenges I faced while returning to school was the responsibility of being a mother.
