Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Navigating the complexities of mental health has been a transformative journey that has deeply influenced my beliefs, relationships, and aspirations. Mental health is often stigmatized or misunderstood, but through personal experience, I have gained an understanding of its significance in shaping our lives. This journey has led me to develop a profound sense of empathy, strengthened my relationships, and inspired me to advocate for mental health awareness. My parents were both military so I’ve had to adjust to many environments that always felt overwhelming. Moving to different states, changing schools and just having to start all over brought great anxiety over me.
My beliefs about mental health have evolved significantly over time. Initially, like many, I may have underestimated the importance of mental well-being, viewing it as something secondary to physical health. However, as I encountered my own challenges, I realized that mental health is not just a peripheral aspect of life but a fundamental component that influences every other area. This realization reshaped my worldview, leading me to appreciate the intricate connection between the mind and body. I came to understand that mental health is not merely the absence of mental illness but the presence of well-being, resilience, and a sense of purpose.
This shift in belief also extended to how I view others. I learned that outward appearances can be deceiving, and that people often carry invisible burdens. This understanding has instilled in me a deep respect for the struggles of others, even when they are not immediately apparent. It has also reinforced my belief in the importance of compassion, patience, and non-judgmental support in all interactions.
My journey with mental health has had a profound impact on my relationships. I have become more attuned to the emotional needs of those around me, recognizing the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment. This has strengthened my connections with others, as I strive to be a source of comfort and understanding. I have also learned the value of vulnerability—both in myself and in others. By being open about my own experiences, I have found that it encourages others to share their struggles as well, fostering deeper and more authentic relationships.
Moreover, I have become more discerning about the relationships I maintain. I have come to understand that surrounding myself with supportive, understanding people is crucial for my own well-being. This has led me to distance myself from relationships that are toxic or draining, and instead invest in those that are mutually beneficial. I have learned that it is not selfish to prioritize my mental health in this way, but rather necessary for maintaining healthy, fulfilling relationships.
Perhaps most significantly, I believe that everyone should have access to the support and resources they need to maintain their mental well-being.
This has inspired me to pursue opportunities where I can make a positive impact—whether through writing, volunteering, or simply being a supportive presence in the lives of others. I have also become more mindful of the importance of balance in my own life, striving to pursue my goals while also prioritizing self-care. I have learned that success is not just about achieving external milestones, but also about maintaining inner peace and well-being.
In conclusion, my journey with mental health has been a catalyst for profound personal growth. It has reshaped my beliefs, deepened my relationships, and inspired my aspirations. I am committed to continuing this journey, both for my own well-being and to contribute to a more compassionate and understanding world. Through this process, I have come to see mental health not as a challenge to be overcome, but as a vital aspect of life that deserves attention, care, and respect.

Sola Family Scholarship
Over the years, I am most proud of my personal growth as well as development, because I was raised by a single parent. Being a military dependent came with constant changes and being the new kid was never an easy task but I learned to adapt over time. Most times It felt lonely and out of place but that all changed when my grandmother showed interest in coming to live with my mother and me. We were thrilled to finally have family near. Granny made sure to cook home-cooked meals and made all my basketball games faithfully. One day while at one of her appointments, we received the bad news that Granny had kidney failure and things were progressing fast. Eventually, things took a turn for the worst and it was the most gut-wrenching feeling that I have ever felt. In this time of deep grievance, I had to find ways to keep myself occupied.
Shortly after I decided to become a member of the Little Rock Kappa League. This mentorship program aids young men in grades 8-12th to discover leadership, achievement, and service in every field of human endeavors. It's motto is "Boys will be boys until someone teaches them to become men. It allows me to serve the community by doing toy drives, feeding the homeless, and rehabilitating homes for habitat. We attend monthly meetings to discuss financial strategies, college prep, and self-identity. Although these tools are available, one must maintain the required GPA of 2.75 to uphold membership.
In addition, I gravitated towards basketball and my love for the sport continued to heighten as I advanced from JV to varsity during 9th grade. Teamwork and determination is the key skill but you also have to have endurance and be aggressive. While maintaining honors, playing varsity basketball, and serving as a member of the Little Rock Kappa League, I decided to get a job. Just when I thought that I had found balance my mom moved me to public schooling junior year during basketball season. Devastation was at an all-time high and I had lost interest in everything.
Adjusting to a new school was a challenge that I wasn’t prepared for and I missed playing basketball. Everyone wasn’t friendly, I even experienced bullying. I managed to stay focused on my grades and work on basketball daily until I made the team. Going through this journey taught me that sky's the limit and I can accomplish all things if I just apply myself!
My career focus is to specialize in sports medicine and practice physical therapy. Winning this scholarship is important because it will allow me to advocate for the individual’s health concerns while providing a proper plan for treatment. With these resources treating patients' injuries with rehabilitation to increase mobility can boost morale. Receiving this award will lift financial hardship and position me closer to fulfilling my obligation to myself, my mom, my granny and all those who helped mold me into the young man I am today.

As I sat in silence, a lump in my throat began to form, my heartbeat was rapid and it became hard to breathe. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, exhale, are the words that I uttered, as I remembered reading a pamphlet describing this method to relax. I've waited my whole life for this moment and it's finally here. I'm a senior already! Reflecting on how I used to think graduating high school would take forever, it honestly happened rather fast. Over the years, I am most proud of my personal growth as well as development, because I was raised by a single parent. Being a military dependent came with constant changes and being the new kid was never an easy task but I learned to adapt over time. I often felt lonely and displaced but that all changed when my grandmother showed interest in coming to live with my mother and I. We were thrilled to finally have family near. Granny prepared our favorite home-cooked meals and made each of my games faithfully. One day while at her appointment, we received bad news that Granny had kidney failure and things were progressing fast. Devastation was at an all-time high and I had lost interest in everything. Adjusting to the new school was a challenge that I wasn’t prepared for. Everyone wasn’t friendly and I even experienced bullying. During that time, it felt like my biggest regret. I managed to stay focused on my grades and work on basketball daily. I attended tryouts at the new school and I made the team.
Receiving this award will lift financial hardship and position me closer to fulfilling my obligation to myself, my mom, my granny, and all those who helped mold me into the young man I am today. My mom has always been my greatest support and always seem to find time regardless of her busy schedule. For that I will always be grateful!

Eventually, things took a turn for the worst and it was the most gut-wrenching feeling that I have ever felt. Deeply grieving, I found new ways to keep myself occupied.
Shortly after, I became a member of the Little Rock Kappa League. This mentorship program aids young men in grades 8-12th to discover leadership, achievement, and service in every field of human endeavors. It’s motto is “Boys will be boys until someone teaches them to become men.” KL allows me to serve the community by hosting toy drives, feeding the homeless, and rehabilitating homes for habitat. We attend monthly meetings to discuss financial strategies, college prep, and self-identity. One must maintain a 2.75 GPA to uphold membership.
In addition, I gravitated towards basketball and my love for the sport continued to heighten as I advanced from JV to varsity during 9th grade. While maintaining a B average in AP courses (striving for an A), playing varsity basketball, and serving as a member of the Little Rock Kappa
League, I decided to get a job and after 7 months I received my first promotion. Just when I thought I had found balance my mom moved me to public schooling junior year during basketball season. I’ve waited my whole life for this moment, it's finally here. I'm a senior already! As I look back and reflect on how graduating high school would take forever, it honestly happened rather fast. So many times I said to myself, graduating 12th grade felt like a long time coming. Over the years, I am most proud of my personal growth as well as development, because I was raised by a single parent. Being a military dependent came with constant changes and being the new kid was never an easy task but I learned to adapt over time. One day while at one of her appointments, we received the bad news that Granny had kidney failure and things were progressing fast. Eventually, things took a turn for the worst and it was the most gut-wrenching feeling that I have ever felt. In this time of deep grievance, I had to find ways to keep myself occupied.

Teamwork and determination is the key but you also to sustain endurance and be aggressive. It was a challenge maintaining grades, playing varsity basketball, and serving as Vice President of the Little Rock Kappa League. I decided to get a job. Getting my first job was exciting at first, I didn’t know what to expect but I knew that it would teach me responsibility and would be a good way to earn money. My hard work paid off after 6 months when I received my first raise. Just when I thought that I had found balance my mom moved me to public schooling junior year during basketball season. Adjusting to the new school was a challenge that I wasn’t prepared. Everyone wasn’t friendly and I even experienced bullying. I managed to stay focused on my grades and come home and work on basketball. Tryouts were around the corner but everyone was convinced that I wouldn’t make it. That only drove me to be more determined. As the big day approached, I silenced the noise, played hard, and dominated. The following week announcements were posted and I made the varsity team. Going through this journey taught me that sky's the limit and I can accomplish all things if I just apply myself!
