My grandmother's pursuit of a career in nursing despite financial hardships and discrimination inspired me to value hard work and perseverance. Her legacy laid the foundation for my parents to instill in me the importance of education and pursuing STEM fields. This, in turn, led me to discover a passion for software by combining design and engineering, specifically focused on start-ups and health. I’m thankful to be in a college that develops our professional experience and surrounds me with motivated and like-minded individuals. As the only black female Muslim student in the honors college, this is a huge milestone for diversity in the field. With the offered resources, I developed two exciting projects: an online store and a chat system. But what has been most progressive is my involvement in RedLiners, a project with a primary focus on accessibility and medical technologies. The project involved creating products and service concepts for clients such as Al Sigl and Rochester Regional Health. I collaborated with industry experts to develop glasses that assist patients in improving their quality of life due to visual neglect; a condition where they fail to report, respond or orient to stimuli located in left contralesional space. Using the Python OpenCV package, I was able to generate red contours onto objects, making it easier for the patient to be aware of objects in their space when wearing the glasses. One of the biggest challenges was understanding the disease, which is not only rare but can't be explained by a fundamental sensory or visual problem. Throughout this project, I was able to broaden my perspective and design code that was more inclusive and accessible. My dream job is to continue this project and help develop innovative solutions that positively impact the lives of individuals with disabilities. A lot of inspired thinkers have these grand ideas of what they want to do but get into financial debt. We are a household of seven, and both of my parents must work full-time jobs to have my twin sister and I both attend college. They took out the last loan they could afford last semester, and now it’s up to me to make ends meet before August. It’s not only just about supporting my career goals, but the future careers of my siblings, with one studying data science, one getting into architectural engineering, and one planning to be a pharmacist; we each have aspirational intentions. Knowing that a lot of people in my family dropped out of college, I know how crucial it is to remain committed. When I think about the sacrifices my parents made for me, I want to make them proud and continue my education to achieve what they couldn’t. This scholarship would lower the burden on them and help me continue my time at RIT. A scholarship would save me hours of work and keep me more focused on my studies. I do not want my education to be limited simply because of my finances, and I can’t afford to have bad grades from overworking. This can help me focus on researching technology that can help tens of thousands, if not one day, millions of people.
