    Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
My mother has been the cornerstone of my life, guiding me steadfastly towards my aspirations in higher education. Her journey has been marked by immense strength and perseverance, especially through her battles with breast cancer, first diagnosed in 2019 and recurring in 2022. Despite the daunting challenges of chemotherapy, radiation treatments twice, immunotherapy that left her physically depleted, and depression coupled with anxiety, her spirit has remained unbroken, inspiring me every step of the way. As a retired military officer in a predominantly male field, my mother demonstrated what it means to be a resilient leader. Her career taught her to navigate and excel in challenging environments, a lesson she passed on to me with unwavering dedication. From her, I learned not only the essence of leadership but also the importance of being a good follower. Leadership, according to her, involves listening, empathy, and the ability to motivate and care for others. These principles have deeply influenced my own approach to life and my educational journey. Her fight, against cancer, mental health issues and the barriers of her professional military setting, illustrated her indomitable will. During her treatments, she faced each day with a bravery that seemed to defy the odds. Her determination in the face of such adversity has been a profound lesson in courage and tenacity. Observing her, I've learned to tackle my studies with a similar fortitude, knowing that no obstacle is too great when faced with determination and support. My mothers personal battles and professional achievements have ingrained in me with a deep sense of purpose and responsibility. She instilled in me the value of education as a tool for personal and societal change, motivating me to pursue higher education with a clear vision and purpose. Her life lessons have taught me that the path to success is often through consistent effort and resilience. Witnessing my mother's mental health struggles during her battle with recurrent breast cancer has profoundly shaped my career aspirations as a broadcast journalist. Her resilience and vulnerability have highlighted the critical importance of compassionate, accurate, and impactful storytelling in the media. Seeing her navigate the emotional toll of cancer treatments and the uncertainty of her prognosis has made me deeply aware of the human stories behind medical conditions. It has driven me to pursue a career in broadcast journalism where I can shine a light on health issues, advocate for mental health awareness, and amplify the voices of those often overlooked or misunderstood. My mom’s road have instilled in me a sense of empathy and a commitment to journalistic integrity. I want to create content that not only informs but also inspires and supports those facing similar battles. By sharing stories like my mother's, I hope to foster a more informed and compassionate society, using my platform to advocate for better mental health resources and support systems for individuals and families affected by illness. My mother's journey has fueled my passion for journalism with a purpose, driving me to use my skills to make a meaningful difference in the world. The values and lessons I have learned from my mother, ensures she remains my guiding light. Her legacy, defined by leadership and perseverance, fuels my ambition to excel academically and to make meaningful contributions to society, just as she has.

I am Piper Janét Renaud and it is true, everyone does face adversity in their lifetimes. The adversity I faced actually affected my mother. My mother, Geri DeShautelle-Renaud, has been the cornerstone of my life, guiding me steadfastly towards my aspirations in higher education. Her journey has been marked by immense strength and perseverance, especially through her battles with breast cancer, first diagnosed in 2019 and recurring in 2022. It won’t necessarily be physical strength but the type of emotional strength that will have you believing you are invincible and that you are a superhero of sorts. As I continue my educational journey, the values and lessons from my mother, Geri DeShautelle-Renaud, remain my guiding light. Her legacy, defined by leadership and perseverance, fuels my ambition to excel academically and to make meaningful contributions to society, just as she has.

I am Piper Janét Renaud and I am the daughter of Juan and Geri Renaud. My parents are both combat disabled veterans who have blessed me with a life that is full of giving, sharing and positivity. The lessons that I have learned from my parents makes me a better person that gives back, appreciates and is kind to others and shows love and empathy to those that need it. Participating in humanitarian acts and community service is not just about giving back, it's about fostering positive change, empathy, and support within communities. I am involved in several initiatives that aim to make a difference in the lives of others. These initiatives also make an impact in my life as well. One of my main focuses is supporting Feeding America, an organization dedicated to eradicating hunger across the nation. Through volunteering at local food banks and participating in fundraisers, I contribute to providing meals for families in need. This effort not only addresses immediate hunger but also addresses systemic issues related to food insecurity. I also had the privilege of participating in a mission trip with Alpha Kappa Alpha and Africare to Tanzania, where I engaged in various community development projects. From building rabbit hutches to providing healthcare assistance, this experience allowed me to witness firsthand the impact of collective efforts in uplifting communities facing adversity. My involvement in this trip instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility to continue supporting global initiatives for sustainable development. On a more local scale, I dedicate time to teaching young girls at my high school cheer clinics. These clinics not only promote physical activity and teamwork but also empower girls to build confidence and leadership skills. By mentoring these girls, I contribute to shaping the next generation of resilient and empowered individuals who can positively impact their communities. I have also participated in coat and clothing drives both in my community and within my high school. Donating time and resources to these drives ensures that individuals experiencing hardships have access to essential items, especially during colder months. These efforts not only provide tangible support but also foster a sense of solidarity and compassion within the community. I plan to continue giving back to my community through various engagement in these humanitarian acts. I aim to expand my involvement with Feeding America by organizing fundraisers and raising awareness about food insecurity issues. Additionally, I intend to participate in more mission trips to underserved regions globally, leveraging my skills and resources to contribute meaningfully to community development projects. I also aspire to expand the reach of my teaching at cheer clinics to reach a broader audience of young girls, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds. By providing mentorship, guidance, and opportunities for personal growth, I hope to inspire and empower more individuals to become agents of positive change in their communities. In conclusion, my ongoing commitment to humanitarian acts and community service reflects my values of empathy, compassion, and service to others. By continuing to engage in these endeavors, I strive to create a more loving, kind and compassionate world for everyone one step at a time.
