Bio

My name is Paris Fieldings and I am an 18-year-old senior at Enlightium Academy and rising freshman at North Carolina A&T University this fall. I am a golfer and have placed 2nd in the World Teen Championship 2020 and won the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls Golf Tour Masters 2022. I enjoy volunteering at my local church and at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia to clean-up and distribute food in my local community. Finally, I am also a level 6 pianist and have participated in the Guild Audition. Despite all of these activities I enjoy, my favorite is participating in the First Tee of Hampton Roads. I was a part of this program for six years and was an assistant coach for two years. By being an assistant coach, my desire of developing a mentorship program that would aid prospective students that need assistance or guidance in school has grown. This would help prepare students for college and their career after graduation. More specifically, I would like to mentor young athletes that play golf.

Some extracurricular activities that I participate in outside of golf are writing and sketching, but currently, my favorite activity is playing the piano. I remember when I participated in my first piano performance. My instructor stated that I had to learn a total of twenty Christmas songs from memory. At the time, I barely knew how to play Hot Cross Buns! Is it possible to memorize twenty piano songs before Christmas? Little did I know what I was truly capable of. Sometimes my teacher had group sessions at her house. I was embarrassed by my lack of talent and I rarely participated; however, I became inspired by the group’s passion and abilities. Being able to have fun and doing something they all loved were some of the many things I respected about the group. Inspired, I gained the courage to learn the twenty songs. During the recital, everything was going smoothly until I made a mistake on the final piece. Although I tensed up, I was determined to finish my performance on a strong note, I improvised and finished flawlessly. Looking back, this has taught me that I can do anything that I set my mind to.  After college, I plan to contribute to my community through a mentorship program. My interest in mentorship started when my mother asked if I was interested in teaching at the First Tee of Hampton Roads. I questioned if I would be able to teach effectively. Just because I was good at golf, does not mean I would be a good instructor. However, joining the program challenged me in a new way. Devising techniques teaching for the students was a struggle at first, but I grew to enjoy it. Inspired by this experience, my desire of developing a mentorship program that would aid prospective students has grown. In 2020-2021 a series of unfortunate events occurred like the pandemic and my parents’ divorce. As a result, my golf performance started to get worse. Negative thoughts destroyed my love for the game as I asked myself if I should continue to play. However, living in regret is much worse than living in discipline. I pushed through these difficulties and continued to be patient with myself. Because of my persistence, not only is my golf game much better, but my mindset is stronger too. I now believe that no challenge is a waste and that good things can come from difficulties. This is why I think having mentorship programs is essential. I believe that mentoring the youth is where I can make the most impact on my community. I plan to continue to maintain a high GPA throughout the year and play golf for my team. Not only have I learned that a college education can profoundly influence your future and allow you to earn a degree, but it teaches you how to be an independent person. As a student-athlete, I will use proper time management to be successful off and on the golf course. This way I can have a pleasant and successful time as a student-athlete.   The primary difference this scholarship will make is helping me avoid incurring student debt. It will pay for my housing, books, or other necessary expenses. The scholarship will decrease my student loans and allow me to complete my future educational and career goals. As a result, I can maximize my college experience through volunteering, studying, and improving as a student-athlete.
