My purpose in this life is to not only find happiness and contentment in any actions I take while I am here, but also help others to do so as well. My career goal is to be a counselor who owns their own practice that operates as a worker's collective. The practice will not only support our client's mental health but also serve the needs of the community. Mental health support and ensuring people's physical needs are met go hand in hand.

VonDerek Casteel Being There Counts Scholarship
During my teenage years, my focus on applying to college, choosing a major, and planning my departure from childhood was minimal, overshadowed by a persistent belief that I would not be on this earth for much longer. Engulfed in a decade-long struggle with depression, I found myself unable to envision a future beyond the cage of my melancholy. Despite encountering moments of joy, the weight of it all remained ever-present. It wasn't until I reached my junior year of college that I finally received the mental health care I desperately needed and deserved, allowing me to believe in the possibility of a brighter future. Even then, it took several years to believe in living a fulfilling and happy life in the present.
Today, I am on a journey to become a licensed professional counselor, driven by my desire to support others in their mental health journey and help them realize their dreams, just like I was able to. My ultimate ambition is to establish a community mental health center owned and operated by its employees. This worker's cooperative would offer a comprehensive range of services including individual and group counseling, career guidance, childcare facilities, and a nurturing garden space. It's a sanctuary where individuals cannot only access vital resources but also foster a sense of belonging and community.
There are two characteristics of the center I want to highlight. First, having a community center that has group therapy could be transformative and be a place of healing when a community is going through something tragic. The grief would have a physical space to be held. People may be less afraid to speak on it to each other when there is established space to do so. Secondly, I specifically want it to be a worker's cooperative to ensure that all employees feel comfortable giving feedback and can feel the confidence of being an owner where they work. It is important for employees to be happy in their place of work so that they can pass on that same energy to their clients.
Receiving this scholarship would be instrumental in actualizing my career dream. It would provide the financial stability necessary to continue my internship over the summer when federal loans are unavailable, enabling me to continue to work with my clients. Moreover, it would alleviate the burden of financial stress, allowing me to focus on my studies and professional development.
In reading about this scholarship opportunity, I couldn't help but notice the alignment of our values and aspirations. Prioritizing mental health within our communities is paramount, as it forms the bedrock upon which all other endeavors are built. I extend my sympathies for your loss and commend your dedication to channeling grief into meaningful action for causes close to your hearts
