Mental health issues have significantly shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. My family's history with mental health has deeply influenced my perspective. Growing up in a family where discussing feelings and emotions was frowned upon, we maintained a facade of perfection. This facade was a coping mechanism, a way to mask the turmoil that simmered beneath the surface. In high school, I started having severe panic attacks, but I didn’t know what they were. Suddenly, I would feel like I had a fever and couldn't focus on anything. My chest would tighten, I struggled to breathe, and my body would shake uncontrollably. Emotions were not a topic of discussion in my family, and I had no understanding of what a panic attack felt like or the warning signs of one. When people mentioned having panic attacks, I assumed they were being dramatic. Experiencing one firsthand shattered that misconception. I realized that panic attacks are beyond one's control, an overwhelming force that takes hold without warning. When I finally mustered the courage to ask my mom for help, she seemed to know exactly what I was experiencing. It was then that she shared her own struggles with anxiety and revealed that she was on medication for it. This was a revelation for me. I discovered that my grandmother also had anxiety and was on medication. Furthermore, I learned that my other grandmother suffered from depression and committed suicide before I was born. This left me questioning why no one had ever told me about this. Not to menton, I was twenty years old and had never even seen a picture of my grandmother who committed suicide. Was it because my parents were trying to protect me? Or was it part of the ingrained belief that discussing such matters was taboo? The way my family never discussed emotions or mental health significantly impacted my ability to open up to others. When people were vulnerable with me and shared intimate details of their lives, I felt uncomfortable. It was foreign to me that someone could openly talk about their emotions. However, my time in college has been transformative. Being away from my family's traditional norms allowed me to realize that my most meaningful relationships have developed through sharing my emotions and feelings. Joining the sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma, whose philanthropy is focused on mental health and well-being, has given me the opportunity to give back to a cause I feel deeply connected to. This involvement has been incredibly fulfilling and has furthered my commitment to mental health advocacy. In this supportive environment, I have found the courage to speak openly about my experiences and encourage others to do the same. Advocating for mental health through my sorority has not only been therapeutic for me but has also allowed me to make a tangible impact on my community. Additionally, art has played a crucial role in my mental health journey. During times of emotional turmoil, I found solace in art, using it as a way to express myself without words. This creative outlet has not only helped me cope but also sparked a passion for creative pursuits. It’s remarkable how a struggle with mental health has fostered such a deep love for the arts. Creating art allows me to externalize my internal struggles, to give shape and form to feelings that are often too complex to articulate. This process has been incredibly healing, providing me with a sense of peace and fulfillment. My experiences with mental health have profoundly influenced my career aspirations. As a junior at the University of Florida, majoring in marketing, I aim to pursue a career in the creative industry, focusing on marketing and advertising. I am determined to find a career that aligns with my values and allows me to leverage my creativity. I believe that my passion for the arts, coupled with my commitment to mental health advocacy, can drive meaningful change in the industry. I aspire to create campaigns that not only capture the audience's attention but also promote awareness and understanding of mental health issues. Reflecting on my journey, I am grateful for the challenges I have faced. Each struggle has taught me valuable lessons about resilience, empathy, and the importance of vulnerability. I have come to understand that true strength lies in acknowledging our weaknesses and seeking help when we need it. By breaking the silence around mental health, I hope to inspire others to do the same. In conclusion, my family's history with mental health and my personal experiences have profoundly shaped who I am today. They have influenced my beliefs, strengthened my relationships, and guided my career aspirations. I am committed to continuing my advocacy for mental health, both through my personal interactions and my professional endeavors. It is my hope that by sharing my story, I can help break the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage others to seek the support they need. Together, we can create a world where everyone feels empowered to speak openly about their mental health and receive the compassion and understanding they deserve.

My journey towards becoming an EMT began with a deeply personal and emotional experience from my childhood. When I was just six years old, my father had a near-death experience. I will never forget the sight of EMTs and paramedics rushing into our home, their faces focused and determined as they administered CPR to my dad. In the midst of the chaos, one EMT took a moment to kneel beside me and offer comfort. That small act of kindness and reassurance meant the world to my frightened six-year-old self. It was then that I realized how impactful first responders are, not only in their life saving abilities but also in their capacity to provide solace to families in their darkest hours. This experience planted a seed in me, a desire to be that calming and reassuring presence for others in their time of need. I want to save lives, but equally important to me is the chance to offer comfort and hope to families who are going through incredibly stressful and intense situations. During my senior year of high school, I earned my EMT certification, and from that moment, I knew this was my true passion. Fast forward three years, I am currently a student at the University of Florida, majoring in marketing. Although my chosen field of study does not directly relate to emergency medicine, my passion for this line of work runs deep. Volunteering as an EMT has given me a profound sense of connection to people and a way to serve my community that I find incredibly fulfilling. Last year, I joined the Gator Emergency Medical Response Unit, a volunteer organization that provides EMS services to the University of Florida community. Recently, I was honored to accept the position of assistant training coordinator, where I facilitate monthly and weekly training sessions for our 70 responders. This role has allowed me to grow even more committed to the mission of emergency medical services and has reinforced my dedication to supporting my community. The moments that first inspired me to become an EMT continue to drive me every day. I am deeply committed to this path and to making a positive impact on the lives of those I serve. Whether it's through saving a life or offering a comforting word, I am dedicated to being there for others, just as that EMT was there for me and my family.
