When I was ten years-old my younger sister was diagnosed with epilepsy. Within the blink of an eye my entire world was flipped upside down. My family dynamic was filled with fear and uncertainty for the future. Over the next five years we worked to support my sister as she went through medication after medication in hopes of avoiding surgery. By the time I hit high school I began to realize the fear and uncertainty that captivated my family could be supported through the use of education. Herein lies the beginning of my passion for science education. I spent the next years throughout my high school career working with my science teachers to research the brain and begin to understand the science behind epilepsy. Through this research I began to realize that my passion for science and neurology could take me into a future career. In 2019 I entered the University of South Dakota as a medical biology major in hopes of being accepted to medical school to become a pediatric neurologist.
During my time at the University of South Dakota I have been able to explore my biggest passion in life: learning. In my sophomore year I decided to double major in History and Medical Biology. By opening my curriculum to history I was able to better explore the humanity side of a science career. My historical background has allowed me to read and understand the scientists and researchers that have come before me. While working to bridge the gap between history and science I began to realize how impactful scientific findings could be on patients in need. As I read about how science has changed the lives of people all around the globe, I knew I had chosen the right career to strive for. I fell in love with becoming a doctor when I realized how much my possible career could mean to a future patient.
From the beginning of my educational career when I was just learning how to count, to present day when I study medical biology, my experiences with education have shaped me into who I am. By gaining an education I was given a world where I could be creative and curious. By gaining an education I was given a world where I could be wrong and have the opportunity to learn from my mistakes. By gaining an education I was given a world where I was supported by my teachers to strive for my hopes and dreams. As I get closer to the end of my undergraduate career, I am increasingly grateful for the important role education has played in my life. In an effort to avoid taking these experiences for granted I strive to always use my education to support others and assist them in finding the answers I once sought so desperately.
